and burn the whole ram on the altar. \u00a0It is a burnt offering (\u02bd\u00f4l\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05e2\u05dc\u05d4; Septuagint<\/a>: \u1f41\u03bb\u03bf\u03ba\u03b1\u1f7b\u03c4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1) to the Lord, a soothing aroma; it is an offering made by fire to the Lord.<\/td>\nbut the entrails and the legs he washed with water, and Moses offered the whole ram up in smoke on the altar \u2013 it was a burnt offering (\u02bd\u00f4l\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05e2\u05dc\u05d4; Septuagint<\/a>: \u1f41\u03bb\u03bf\u03ba\u03b1\u1f7b\u03c4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1) for a soothing aroma, a gift (\u02bcishsh\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d0\u05e9\u05d4<\/a>) to the Lord, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

The burnt offering<\/em> ram was eaten by no one.\u00a0 This led me to a discussion between Jesus and one of the experts in the law <\/em>(\u03b3\u03c1\u03b1\u03bc\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u1f73\u03c9\u03bd, a form of \u03b3\u03c1\u03b1\u03bc\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c2<\/a>) on the relative merits of burnt offerings<\/em> (\u1f41\u03bb\u03bf\u03ba\u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u03c9\u03bc\u1f71\u03c4\u03c9\u03bd, a form of \u1f41\u03bb\u03bf\u03ba\u03b1\u03cd\u03c4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1).\u00a0 Before turning to that I want to survey what the New Testament writers had to say about these experts<\/em>.<\/p>\n

When wise men from the East alarmed Herod with news that a King of the Jews had been born, Herod turned to the chief priests and experts in the law<\/em> (\u03b3\u03c1\u03b1\u03bc\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c2, another form of \u03b3\u03c1\u03b1\u03bc\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c2) and asked them where the Christ was to be born<\/em>.[3]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0The \u03b3\u03c1\u03b1\u03bc\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c2 turned to the writing of the prophet Micah (Matthew 2:5, 6 NET):<\/p>\n

\u201cIn Bethlehem of Judea,\u201d they said, \u201cfor it is written this way by the prophet: \u2018And<\/em><\/strong> you, Bethlehem,<\/strong> in the land of Judah, are in no way least among the rulers of Judah, for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel<\/strong>.<\/em>\u2019\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The \u03b3\u03c1\u03b1\u03bc\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c2 updated the geography from \u03bf\u1f36\u03ba\u03bf\u03c2 \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 \u0395\u03c6\u03c1\u03b1\u03b8\u03b1 (\u201chouse of Ephratha\u201d) to \u03b3\u1fc6 \u1f38\u03bf\u1f7b\u03b4\u03b1 (in the land of Judah<\/em>).\u00a0 Where the Hebrew and its Greek translation affirmed that Bethelem was little <\/em>or \u201cvery few\u201d (\u1f40\u03bb\u03b9\u03b3\u03bf\u03c3\u03c4\u1f78\u03c2<\/a>), they denied it: \u03bf\u1f50\u03b4\u03b1\u03bc\u1ff6\u03c2<\/a> \u1f10\u03bb\u03b1\u03c7\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7<\/a> (in no way least<\/em>).\u00a0 Where the Hebrew and its Greek translation compared Bethlehem to \u03c7\u03b9\u03bb\u03b9\u1f71\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a> \u0399\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u03b1<\/a> (thousands of Judah<\/em>), they compared it to \u1f21\u03b3\u03b5\u03bc\u1f79\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>\u00a0\u1f38\u03bf\u1f7b\u03b4\u03b1 (rulers of Judah<\/em>).\u00a0 The \u03b3\u03c1\u03b1\u03bc\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c2 left out that this ruler would come forth unto<\/em> (or, \u201cfor\u201d) ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>(\u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4<\/a>) and that his goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting<\/em>.<\/p>\n

They did recognize that this ruler would shepherd <\/em>(\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03bc\u03b1\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6, a form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03bc\u03b1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>) the people: He will assume his post and shepherd<\/em>[4]<\/sup><\/a> (r\u00e2\u02bd\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d5\u05e8\u05e2\u05d4<\/a>; Septuagint<\/a>: \u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03bc\u03b1\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6, a form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03bc\u03b1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9) the people by the Lord\u2019s<\/em> (ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4) strength<\/em>\u2026[5]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This ruler <\/em>who will shepherd <\/em>or feed <\/em>the people is none other than ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>(Micah 4:6, 7 Tanakh):<\/p>\n

Most references[8]<\/sup><\/a> to the experts in the law portray them in opposition to Jesus and the Gospel.\u00a0 For I tell you<\/em>, Jesus said, unless your righteousness goes beyond that of the experts in the law<\/em> (\u03b3\u03c1\u03b1\u03bc\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u1f73\u03c9\u03bd, a form of \u03b3\u03c1\u03b1\u03bc\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c2) and the Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven<\/em>.[9]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0When they heard Jesus\u2019 prophetic parable (Luke 20:9-19<\/a>) about the vineyard that was taken from the former tenants to be given to others,\u00a0the experts in the law<\/em> (\u03b3\u03c1\u03b1\u03bc\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c2, another form of \u03b3\u03c1\u03b1\u03bc\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c2) and the chief priests wanted to arrest him that very hour, because they realized he had told this parable against them. \u00a0But they were afraid of the people<\/em>.[10]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

What follows is one of a precious few references[11]<\/sup><\/a> to one of the experts in the law<\/em> (\u03b3\u03c1\u03b1\u03bc\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u1f73\u03c9\u03bd, a form of \u03b3\u03c1\u03b1\u03bc\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c2) who was not in direct opposition to Jesus or the Gospel.\u00a0 There are so many differences between the NET parallel Greek text and the Stephanus Textus Receptus and Byzantine Majority Text that I\u2019ll present it in tabular form, breaking the table to compare and contrast the Greek texts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

I noticed that the expert in the law<\/em> used \u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u1f73\u03c3\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2 (a form of \u03c3\u03cd\u03bd\u03b5\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) rather than \u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03bd\u03bf\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2 (a form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03ac\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03b1).\u00a0 I don\u2019t know why. \u00a0But I can track both words through the New Testament.<\/p>\n

If I exclude the quotations which agree with the Septuagint (See Table1<\/a> below), I notice a preference in Paul\u2019s writing for forms of \u03c3\u03cd\u03bd\u03b5\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2 when describing the mind <\/em>or understanding <\/em>of the new human, while forms of \u03b4\u03b9\u03ac\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03b1 described that of the old human.\u00a0 Luke seemed to follow that convention as well, though Peter and John don\u2019t appear to recognize any such connotations.\u00a0 Peter\u2019s association<\/a> with Mark\u2019s Gospel narrative and the fact that he demonstrated no preference for forms of \u03c3\u03cd\u03bd\u03b5\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2 lead me to believe that the law expert\u2019s usage is original, though I can\u2019t exclude editorial commentary by Mark.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m hard-pressed to imagine that this law expert had a grasp of the old and new human, but Matthew identified him further as a Pharisee<\/a>.\u00a0 It makes me wonder if Pharisees already had similar connotations in mind, forms of \u03c3\u03cd\u03bd\u03b5\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2 for righteous Jews, forms of \u03b4\u03b9\u03ac\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03b1 for Gentile sinners<\/a>.\u00a0 Luke may have picked up on this through his association with Paul.\u00a0 But what does it say about Jesus?<\/p>\n

Admittedly, the simplest conclusion is that He quoted the Septuagint, but I haven\u2019t noticed such slavish devotion before<\/a>.\u00a0 By sticking with \u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03b1\u03c2 He may have been communicating to this Pharisee and law expert the impossibility of loving God with a proud, ignorant, stranger, enemy mind full of desires of the flesh and alienated from the life of God.\u00a0 That certainly reinforces<\/a> his dictum: You must all be born from above<\/em>.[32]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

I have no clue whether Jesus as a man carried this much foreknowledge around with Him.\u00a0 I have no doubt the Holy Spirit does (Isaiah 46:9, 10<\/a>), and knew verbatim what He would inspire Luke and Paul to write.\u00a0 Jesus was led by the Spirit like no one I have ever known.\u00a0 Be that as it may, He didn\u2019t question, or quarrel with, the law expert\u2019s use of \u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u1f73\u03c3\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
