Jesus fed about five thousand men<\/em> (Not counting women and children<\/em>)1<\/sup><\/a> with five barley loaves and two fish<\/em>.2<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0After they gathered <\/em>the leftovers and filled twelve baskets<\/em>,3<\/sup><\/a> they began to say to one another, \u201cThis is certainly<\/em> the Prophet<\/em> who is to come into the world<\/em>.\u201d4<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This was a reference to Moses\u2019 prophesy, The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you \u2013 from your fellow Israelites; you must listen to him<\/em>.5<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Immediately Jesus<\/em>6<\/sup><\/a> made the<\/em>7<\/sup><\/a> disciples get into the boat and go ahead of him to the other side <\/em>(\u03c0\u03ad\u03c1\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>),8<\/sup><\/a> while he dispersed the crowds.<\/em>9<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Then Jesus, because he knew they were going to come and seize him by force to make him<\/a> king, withdrew again up the mountainside alone<\/em>.10<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0<\/em>Once Jesus finished praying he walked across the water, apparently intending to pass his disciples by.\u00a0 But they saw him, thought he was a ghost, and were afraid.\u00a0 So Jesus got into the boat with them (Mark 6:45-51<\/a>).<\/p>\n

The next day the crowds followed him across the lake.\u00a0 \u201cRabbi, when did you get here?\u201d<\/em> they asked.\u00a0 \u201cI tell you the solemn truth<\/em>,\u201d Jesus said, \u201cyou are looking for me not because you saw miraculous signs, but because you ate all the loaves of bread you wanted. \u00a0Do not work<\/em> (\u1f10\u03c1\u03b3\u1f71\u03b6\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03c1\u03b3\u03ac\u03b6\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) for the food that disappears, but for the food that remains to eternal life \u2013 the food which the Son of Man will give to you.\u00a0 For God the Father has put his seal of approval on him.\u201d<\/em>11<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

They asked, \u201cWhat must we do<\/a><\/em> (\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) to accomplish<\/em> (\u1f10\u03c1\u03b3\u03b1\u03b6\u1f7d\u03bc\u03b5\u03b8\u03b1<\/a>, another form of \u1f10\u03c1\u03b3\u03ac\u03b6\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9) the deeds<\/em> (\u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03b1<\/a>, a form of \u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>) God requires?\u201d<\/em>\u00a0 Jesus<\/a> replied, \u201cThis is the deed<\/em> (\u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd) God requires \u2013 to believe<\/a><\/em> (\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u1f7b\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) in the one whom he sent.\u201d<\/em>12<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <\/em>After a free lunch these same people called Jesus the prophesied prophet like Moses.\u00a0 They were ready to make him king.\u00a0 But when asked to believe in him, what He said about Himself? what He said about us? that we should think and do these things?\u2014then the duplicity Jesus saw in them was revealed for all to see.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen what miraculous sign will you perform <\/em>(\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03ad\u03c9), so that we may see <\/em>(\u1f34\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03b5\u1f34\u03b4\u03c9<\/a>) it and believe <\/em>(\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u1f7b\u03c3\u03c9\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd, another form of \u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9) you?\u201d<\/em> they said.\u00a0 \u201cWhat will you do<\/em> (\u1f10\u03c1\u03b3\u1f71\u03b6\u1fc3<\/a>, another form of \u1f10\u03c1\u03b3\u03ac\u03b6\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9)?\u201d<\/em>13<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Obviously, feeding five thousand plus people with fives loaves and two fish wasn\u2019t enough.\u00a0 They required better proof than one free lunch if faith was on the table here.\u00a0 \u201cOur ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, just as it is written<\/em>, \u2018He gave them bread <\/em><\/strong>(\u1f04\u03c1\u03c4\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f04\u03c1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) from heaven to eat<\/em><\/strong>.\u2019\u201d14<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 In other words, give us unlimited free lunches and we might have something to talk about.<\/p>\n

According to a note<\/a> in the NET the people quoted Psalm 78:24 to Jesus.\u00a0 It\u2019s not a great quotation, more like a paraphrase, but here is the relevant portion of the Psalm, a Psalm of Asaph, one of David\u2019s musicians<\/a> (Psalm 78:18-32 NET).<\/p>\n

They willfully challenged God by asking for food to satisfy their appetite. \u00a0They insulted God, saying, \u201cIs God really able to give us food in the wilderness? \u00a0Yes, he struck a rock and water flowed out, streams gushed forth.\u00a0 But can he also give us food?\u00a0 Will he provide meat for his people?\u201d \u00a0When the Lord heard this, he was furious.\u00a0 A fire broke out against Jacob, and his anger flared up against Israel, because they did not have faith in God, and did not trust his ability to deliver them. \u00a0He gave a command to the clouds above, and opened the doors in the sky. \u00a0He rained down manna for them to eat; he gave them the grain (Septuagint<\/a>:\u00a0\u1f04\u03c1\u03c4\u03bf\u03bd, a form of \u1f04\u03c1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2)<\/em> of heaven. \u00a0Man ate the food of the mighty ones.\u00a0 He sent them more than enough to eat. \u00a0He brought the east wind through the sky, and by his strength led forth the south wind. \u00a0He rained down meat on them like dust, birds as numerous as the sand on the seashores. \u00a0He caused them to fall right in the middle of their camp, all around their homes. \u00a0They ate until they were stuffed; he gave them what they desired. \u00a0They were not yet filled up, their food was still in their mouths, when the anger of God flared up against them.\u00a0 He killed some of the strongest of them; he brought the young men of Israel to their knees. \u00a0Despite all this, they continued to sin, and did not trust him to do amazing things.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cI tell you the solemn truth<\/em>,\u201d Jesus answered, \u201cit is not Moses<\/a> who has given you the bread <\/em>(\u1f04\u03c1\u03c4\u03bf\u03bd, a form of \u1f04\u03c1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2) from heaven, but my Father is giving you the true bread <\/em>(\u1f04\u03c1\u03c4\u03bf\u03bd, a form of \u1f04\u03c1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2) from heaven <\/em>[Table<\/a>]. \u00a0For the bread <\/em>(\u1f04\u03c1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2) of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.\u201d \u00a0\u201cSir, give us this bread <\/em>(\u1f04\u03c1\u03c4\u03bf\u03bd, a form of \u1f04\u03c1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2) all the time!\u201d<\/em>15<\/sup><\/a> they said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am the bread <\/em>(\u1f04\u03c1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2) of life<\/em>,\u201d16<\/sup><\/a> Jesus said.\u00a0 This wasn\u2019t a difficult figure of speech.\u00a0 It came from Moses, Remember the whole way by which he has brought you these forty years through the desert so that he might, by humbling you, test you to see if you have it within you to keep his commandments or not. \u00a0So he humbled you by making you hungry and then feeding you with unfamiliar manna.\u00a0 He did this to teach you that humankind cannot live by bread <\/em>(Septuagint<\/a>:\u00a0\u1f04\u03c1\u03c4\u1ff3, another form of \u1f04\u03c1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2) alone, but also by everything that comes from the Lord\u2019s mouth<\/em>.17<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cThe one who comes to me<\/a> will never go hungry,<\/em> Jesus continued, and the one who believes <\/em>(\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u1f7b\u03c9\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9) in me will never be thirsty<\/a> <\/em>[Table]<\/a>. \u00a0But I told you that you have seen me and still do not believe<\/em> (\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u1f7b\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5, a form of \u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9). \u00a0Everyone whom the Father gives<\/em> (\u03b4\u1f77\u03b4\u03c9\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>) me will come to me<\/a>, and the one who comes to me I will never send away. \u00a0For I have come down from<\/a> heaven not to do my own will <\/em>(\u03b8\u03ad\u03bb\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>) but the will<\/em> (\u03b8\u03ad\u03bb\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1) of the one who sent me. \u00a0Now this is the<\/a> will<\/em> (\u03b8\u03ad\u03bb\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1) of the one who sent me \u2013 that I should not lose one person of every one he has given <\/em>(\u03b4\u1f73\u03b4\u03c9\u03ba\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, another form of\u00a0\u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9)\u00a0me, but raise them all up at the last day. \u00a0For<\/a> this is the will<\/em> (\u03b8\u03ad\u03bb\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1) of my Father<\/a> \u2013 for everyone who looks <\/em>(\u03b8\u03b5\u03c9\u03c1\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03b8\u03b5\u03c9\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) on the Son and believes<\/em> (\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u1f7b\u03c9\u03bd, another form of \u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9) in him to have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day\u201d<\/em>18<\/sup><\/a> [Table<\/a>].<\/p>\n

In my imagination I can see one person in that crowd nudge the fellow next to him and ask, \u201cSo, uh, does that mean he\u2019s serving lunch, or not?\u201d\u00a0 The actual text reads, Then the Jews who were hostile to Jesus began complaining about him because he said, \u201cI am the bread <\/em>(\u1f04\u03c1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2) that came down from heaven.\u201d<\/em>19<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

When Jesus\u2019 disciples asked Him, \u201cWho is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?\u201d\u00a0 He<\/em>20<\/sup><\/a> called a child, had him stand among them, and said, \u201cI tell you the truth, unless you turn around and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven! \u00a0Whoever then humbles<\/a><\/em>21<\/sup><\/a> himself like this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.\u201d<\/em>22<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Then Jesus warned those who would become stumbling blocks<\/em> (\u03c3\u03ba\u03b1\u03bd\u03b4\u1f71\u03bb\u03c9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c3\u03ba\u03ac\u03bd\u03b4\u03b1\u03bb\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>) to one of these little ones who believe <\/em>(\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c5\u1f79\u03bd\u03c4\u03c9\u03bd, another form of \u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9) in me <\/em>[Table<\/a>].23<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But after that He affirmed his own faithfulness to the will of God with a story about a shepherd (Matthew 18:12-14 NET).<\/p>\n

If someone owns a hundred sheep and one of them goes astray, will he not leave<\/a> the ninety-nine<\/a> on the mountains and<\/a> go look for the one that went astray? \u00a0And if he finds it, I tell you the truth, he will rejoice more over it than over the ninety-nine<\/a> that did not go astray. \u00a0In the same way, your Father in heaven is not willing (\u03b8\u03ad\u03bb\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1)<\/em> that one<\/a> of these little ones be lost [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

John began his Gospel account with this: [Jesus, the Word who was in the beginning with God, who was God]24<\/sup><\/a> was in the world, and the world was created by him, but the world did not recognize him. \u00a0He came to what was his own, but his own people did not receive him. \u00a0But to all who have received him \u2013 those who believe<\/em> (\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u1f7b\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd, another form of \u00a0\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9) in his name \u2013 he has given the right to become God\u2019s children \u2013 children not born by human parents or by human desire<\/em> (\u03b8\u03b5\u03bb\u1f75\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2, a form of \u03b8\u03ad\u03bb\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1) or a husband\u2019s decision<\/em> (\u03b8\u03b5\u03bb\u1f75\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2, a form of \u03b8\u03ad\u03bb\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1), but by God<\/em>.25<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Addendum:<\/strong> January 31, 2021
\nAs I made the tables for Psalm 78:18-32 it really struck home that neither miraculous signs nor punishment opened unregenerate eyes to see the kingdom of God: \u201cI tell you the solemn truth<\/em>,\u201d Jesus told Nicodemus, \u201cunless a person is born from above, he cannot see the kingdom of God\u201d<\/em>26<\/sup><\/a> [Table<\/a>]. \u00a0Was Jesus the only one who sang this psalm and understood that?\u00a0 Did all the others, with religious minds, blame their ancestors for being unregenerate human beings and resolve to do better in their own unregenerate strength (e.g., the weakness<\/em><\/a> of their flesh)?<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n
