This is a continuation<\/a> of ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s\u00a0<\/em>(\u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4<\/a>) instruction to Moses: They<\/em>[1]<\/sup><\/a> are to eat those things by which atonement <\/em>(k\u00e2phar<\/em>, \u05db\u05e4\u05e8<\/a>; Septuagint<\/a>: \u1f21\u03b3\u03b9\u1f71\u03c3\u03b8\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd, a form of \u1f01\u03b3\u03b9\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>) was made to consecrate and to set them apart, but no one else may eat them, for they are holy<\/em>.[2]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The atonement of Aaron and his sons continued:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Next he brought Aaron\u2019s sons forward, and Moses put some of the blood on their right earlobes, on their right thumbs, and on the big toes of their right feet, and Moses splashed the rest of the blood against the altar\u2019s sides.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

I plan to reserve any further consideration of forms of \u1f01\u03b3\u03b9\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9 for another series of essays<\/a>.\u00a0 The ram of ordination<\/em> (NETS<\/a>: \u201cram of validation\u201d),\u00a0\u05d4\u05de\u05dc\u05d0\u05d9\u05dd (mill\u00fb\u02bc<\/em>), translated\u00a0\u03c4\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9\u1f7d\u03c3\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2 (a form of \u03c4\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u03af\u03c9\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2) in the Septuagint, is another matter.\u00a0\u00a0So if perfection<\/em> (\u03c4\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u1f77\u03c9\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2) had in fact been possible through the Levitical priesthood<\/em>, Jesus taught<\/a> his disciples, for on that basis the people received the law \u2013 what further need would there have been for another priest to arise, said to be in the order of Melchizedek and not in Aaron\u2019s order?<\/em>[3]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

If Aaron and his sons were \u201cvalidated\u201d by a ram of ordination<\/em>, how was the high priest<\/em> (\u1f00\u03c1\u03c7\u03b9\u03b5\u03c1\u1f73\u03b1<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03c1\u03c7\u03b9\u03b5\u03c1\u03b5\u03cd\u03c2<\/a>) of the new covenant <\/em>(\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03b8\u1f75\u03ba\u03b7\u03bd \u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bd\u1f75\u03bd<\/a>) perfected<\/em>?\u00a0 During his earthly life Christ offered both requests and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able<\/em>[4]<\/sup><\/a> to save him from death and he was heard because of his devotion <\/em>(\u03b5\u1f50\u03bb\u03b1\u03b2\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u03b5\u1f50\u03bb\u03ac\u03b2\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1<\/a>). \u00a0Although he was a son<\/a>, he learned obedience through the things he suffered. \u00a0And by being perfected<\/em> in this way, he became the source <\/em>(\u03b1\u1f34\u03c4\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) of eternal salvation to all who obey him, and he was designated <\/em>(\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c3\u03b1\u03b3\u03bf\u03c1\u03b5\u03c5\u03b8\u03b5\u1f76\u03c2, a form of \u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c3\u03b1\u03b3\u03bf\u03c1\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) by God as high priest<\/em> in the order of Melchizedek<\/em><\/strong>.[5]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

The Greek word translated perfected <\/em>was \u03c4\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9\u03c9\u03b8\u03b5\u1f76\u03c2 (a form of \u03c4\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>), the verb<\/a> from which the noun<\/a> \u03c4\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u1f77\u03c9\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2 was derived. \u00a0The Greek word translated suffered <\/em>was \u1f14\u03c0\u03b1\u03b8\u03b5\u03bd (a form of \u03c0\u03ac\u03c3\u03c7\u03c9<\/a>).\u00a0 Contrary to my customary<\/a> practice I\u2019ll begin the investigation of what Jesus suffered <\/em>with its negation \u1f14\u03c0\u03b1\u03b8\u03b5\u03bd \u03bf\u1f50\u03b4\u1f72\u03bd because it offers a concise vignette of the religious mind (Acts 28:3-6 NET):<\/p>\n

When Paul had gathered a[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> bundle of brushwood and was putting it on the fire, a viper came out[7]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> because of[8]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> the heat and fastened itself on his hand. \u00a0When the local people saw the creature hanging from Paul\u2019s hand, they said to one another, \u201cNo doubt this man is a murderer! \u00a0Although he has escaped from the sea, Justice herself has not allowed him to live!\u201d \u00a0However, Paul shook the creature off into the fire and suffered (\u1f14\u03c0\u03b1\u03b8\u03b5\u03bd, a form of \u03c0\u03ac\u03c3\u03c7\u03c9)<\/em> no (\u03bf\u1f50\u03b4\u1f72\u03bd, a form of \u03bf\u1f50\u03b4\u03b5\u03af\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> harm. \u00a0But they were expecting that he was going to swell up or suddenly drop dead. \u00a0So after they had waited a long time and had seen nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and said he was a god.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Admittedly, this was the pagan religious mind.\u00a0 In fact, sophisticated Greek pagans may have thought that these local people<\/em> (\u03b2\u1f71\u03c1\u03b2\u03b1\u03c1\u03bf\u03b9, a form of \u03b2\u03ac\u03c1\u03b2\u03b1\u03c1\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>; i.e., \u201cbarbarians\u201d) were beneath them.\u00a0 Still, Isaiah prophesied that Israel would share part of this same religious mind when it came to the Messiah: Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted<\/em>.[9]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The synoptic<\/a> Gospel narratives bear this out:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Those who passed by defamed him, shaking their heads and saying, \u201cYou who can destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself!\u00a0 If you are God\u2019s Son, come down from the cross!\u201d\u00a0 In the same way even[10]<\/sup><\/a> the chief priests \u2013 together with the experts in the law and elders \u2013 were mocking him: \u201cHe saved others, but he cannot save himself!\u00a0 He[11]<\/sup><\/a> is the king of Israel!\u00a0 If he comes down now from the cross, we will believe in[12]<\/sup><\/a> him![13]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 He trusts in God \u2013 let God, if he wants to, deliver him now because he said, \u2018I am God\u2019s Son\u2019!\u201d\u00a0 The robbers who were crucified with[14]<\/sup><\/a> him also spoke abusively to him.[15]<\/sup><\/a><\/td>\nThose who passed by defamed him, shaking their heads and saying, \u201cAha! You who can destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself and come down[16]<\/sup><\/a> from the cross!\u201d\u00a0 In the same way even[17]<\/sup><\/a> the chief priests \u2013 together with the experts in the law \u2013 were mocking him among themselves: \u201cHe saved others, but he cannot save himself!\u00a0 Let the Christ, the king of Israel,[18]<\/sup><\/a> come down from the cross now, that we may see and believe!\u201d[19]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Those who were crucified with[20]<\/sup><\/a> him also spoke abusively to him.<\/td>\nThe people also stood there watching, but the rulers[21]<\/sup><\/a> ridiculed him, saying, \u201cHe saved others.\u00a0 Let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, his chosen one!\u201d\u00a0 The soldiers also mocked[22]<\/sup><\/a> him, coming up and[23]<\/sup><\/a> offering him sour wine, and saying, \u201cIf you are the king of the Jews, save yourself!\u201d\u00a0 There was also an inscription[24]<\/sup><\/a> over him,[25]<\/sup><\/a> \u201cThis is[26]<\/sup><\/a> the king of the Jews.\u201d\u00a0 One of the criminals who was hanging there railed at him, saying, \u201cAren\u2019t[27]<\/sup><\/a> you the Christ?\u00a0 Save yourself and us!\u201d[28]<\/sup><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Jesus\u2019 disconcerting<\/a> answer\u2014How then would the scriptures that say it must happen this way be fulfilled?<\/em>[29]<\/sup><\/a>\u2014offered to his disciples was not repeated here.\u00a0 Even after his resurrection most in Israel were still too hardened (Romans 11:25-32<\/a>) to regard Jesus as ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> (Zechariah 12:7-10<\/a>), the Son of God (Romans 1:2-4<\/a>) or even the Messiah (Isaiah 53:7-12<\/a>).<\/p>\n

The bodies of those animals whose blood the high priest brings into the sanctuary as an offering for sin are burned outside the camp<\/a>. \u00a0Therefore, to sanctify the people by his own blood, Jesus also suffered<\/em> (\u1f14\u03c0\u03b1\u03b8\u03b5\u03bd, a form of \u03c0\u03ac\u03c3\u03c7\u03c9) outside the camp. \u00a0We must go out to him, then, outside the camp<\/a>, bearing the abuse<\/em> (\u1f40\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9\u03b4\u03b9\u03c3\u03bc\u1f78\u03bd, a form of \u1f40\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9\u03b4\u03b9\u03c3\u03bc\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>) he experienced. \u00a0For here we have no lasting city<\/em> (Hebrews 11:8-10<\/a>), but we seek the city that is to come. \u00a0Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, acknowledging his name. \u00a0And do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for God is pleased with such sacrifices<\/em>.[30]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Peter wrote (1 Peter 2:13-25; 3:13-22; 4:12-19 NET):<\/p>\n

Be subject[31]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> to every human institution<\/a> for the Lord\u2019s sake, whether to a king as supreme or to governors as those he commissions to punish[32]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> wrongdoers and praise those who do good. \u00a0For God wants you to silence the ignorance of foolish people by doing good. \u00a0Live as free people, not using your freedom as a pretext for evil, but as God\u2019s slaves. \u00a0Honor all people, love[33]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> the family of believers, fear God, honor the king.<\/p>\n

Slaves, be subject to your masters with all reverence, not only to those who are good and gentle, but also to those who are perverse. \u00a0For this finds God\u2019s favor, if because of conscience toward God someone endures hardships in suffering (\u03c0\u1f71\u03c3\u03c7\u03c9\u03bd, another form of \u03c0\u03ac\u03c3\u03c7\u03c9)<\/em> unjustly. \u00a0For what credit is it if you sin and are mistreated and endure it? \u00a0But if you do good and suffer (\u03c0\u1f71\u03c3\u03c7\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2, another form of \u03c0\u03ac\u03c3\u03c7\u03c9)<\/em> and so endure<\/a>, this finds favor with God. \u00a0For to this you were called, since Christ also suffered (\u1f14\u03c0\u03b1\u03b8\u03b5\u03bd, a form of \u03c0\u03ac\u03c3\u03c7\u03c9)<\/em> for you, leaving an example for you to follow<\/a> in his steps. \u00a0He committed no<\/em><\/strong> sin nor was deceit found in his mouth<\/em><\/strong>. \u00a0When he was maligned, he did not answer back; when he suffered (\u03c0\u1f71\u03c3\u03c7\u03c9\u03bd, another form of \u03c0\u03ac\u03c3\u03c7\u03c9)<\/em>, he threatened no retaliation, but committed himself to God who judges justly. \u00a0He himself bore our sins<\/em><\/strong> in his body on the tree, that we may cease from sinning<\/a> and live for righteousness<\/a>. \u00a0By <\/em><\/strong>his[34]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> wounds<\/em><\/strong> you were healed<\/em><\/strong>. \u00a0For you were going astray<\/em><\/strong>[35]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> like sheep<\/em><\/strong> but[36]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> now you have turned back to the shepherd and guardian of your souls\u2026<\/p>\n

For who is going to harm you if you are devoted[37]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> to what is good? \u00a0But in fact, if you happen to suffer (\u03c0\u1f71\u03c3\u03c7\u03bf\u03b9\u03c4\u03b5, another form of \u03c0\u03ac\u03c3\u03c7\u03c9)<\/em> for doing what is right, you are blessed. \u00a0But do not be terrified of them<\/em><\/strong> or be shaken<\/em><\/strong>.<\/em> \u00a0But set Christ[38]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> apart as Lord in your hearts and[39]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> always be ready to give an answer to anyone who asks about the hope you possess. \u00a0Yet[40]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> do it with courtesy and respect,[41]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> keeping a good conscience, so that those who slander your good conduct in Christ may be put to shame when they accuse[42]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> you. \u00a0For it is better to suffer (\u03c0\u1f71\u03c3\u03c7\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd, another form of \u03c0\u03ac\u03c3\u03c7\u03c9)<\/em> for doing good<\/a>, if God wills[43]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> it, than for doing evil.<\/p>\n

Because Christ also suffered (\u1f14\u03c0\u03b1\u03b8\u03b5\u03bd, a form of \u03c0\u03ac\u03c3\u03c7\u03c9)<\/em> once for sins, the just for the unjust<\/em>, to bring you[44]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> to God, by being put to death<\/a> in the flesh but by being made alive in the spirit<\/a>. \u00a0In it he went and preached to the spirits in prison, after they were disobedient long ago when[45]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> God patiently waited[46]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> in the days of Noah as an ark was being constructed. \u00a0In the ark a few,[47]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> that is eight souls, were delivered through water. \u00a0And this prefigured baptism, which now saves you[48]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> \u2013 not the washing off of physical dirt but the pledge of a good conscience to God \u2013 through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who went into heaven and is at the right hand of God with angels and authorities and powers subject to him\u2026<\/p>\n

Dear friends, do not be astonished that a trial by fire is occurring among you, as though something strange were happening to you. \u00a0But rejoice in the degree that you have shared in the sufferings (\u03c0\u03b1\u03b8\u1f75\u03bc\u03b1\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd, a form of \u03c0\u03ac\u03b8\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em> of Christ, so that when his glory is revealed you may also rejoice and be glad. \u00a0If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory, who is the Spirit of God<\/em><\/strong>, rests<\/em><\/strong> on you.[49]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> \u00a0But let none of you suffer (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c3\u03c7\u1f73\u03c4\u03c9, another form of \u03c0\u03ac\u03c3\u03c7\u03c9)<\/em> as a murderer or thief or criminal or as a troublemaker<\/a>.[50]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> \u00a0But if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but glorify God that you bear such a name.[51]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> \u00a0For it is time for judgment to begin, starting with the house of God. \u00a0And if it starts with us, what will be the fate of those who are disobedient to the gospel of God? \u00a0And if the righteous are barely saved<\/em><\/strong>, what will become of<\/strong><\/em> the ungodly and sinners?<\/em><\/strong> \u00a0So then let those who suffer (\u03c0\u1f71\u03c3\u03c7\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2, another form of \u03c0\u03ac\u03c3\u03c7\u03c9)<\/em> according to the will of God entrust their[52]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> souls to a faithful[53]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> Creator as they do good.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In a world populated by sinful people there is no shortage of injustices and indignities.\u00a0 Sinful people do not love their neighbors as themselves<\/a>. \u00a0Thankfully, most are petty injustices and petty indignities because most of us are petty people, seeking only to live out our lives in relative peace and security.\u00a0 Very few have the ambition to dominate (Matthew 20:25-28<\/a>) others on a grand scale, and even fewer are effectual enough as people to pull it off.<\/p>\n

When the One who calls us by his grace<\/a> is pleased to reveal his Son<\/a> in us, we trust in Jesus, are born from above<\/a>, children of God<\/a>, filled with and led<\/a> by his Holy Spirit (Numbers 11:29<\/a>). \u00a0Then God\u2019s own love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control strives<\/a> within us to curtail the petty injustices and indignities we inflict on others.\u00a0 How are we perfected?\u00a0 We greet others’ petty injustices and indignities with the love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control that wells up within us like a fountain of water springing up to eternal life<\/em>.[54]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 What if the injustice or indignity we face is not so petty?<\/p>\n

Think of him who endured such opposition against himself by sinners, so that you may not grow weary in your souls and give up<\/em>.[55]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Jesus hung naked<\/a> on a cross, obedient to death.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t have to.\u00a0 He could\u2019ve come down any time He wanted<\/a>, any time it got too much, any time He had had enough of sinners\u2019 abuse.\u00a0 How then would the scriptures that say it must happen this way be fulfilled? <\/em>He asked Peter<\/a> rhetorically. \u00a0And that response in word and deed (done in God<\/a><\/em>) is the living image of loving the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength<\/em>.[56]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Each of us who who believes has Scripture to fulfill by the grace of God (Galatians 2:16-21 NET):<\/p>\n

[W]<\/em>e know that no one is justified by the works of the law but by the faithfulness of Jesus Christ. \u00a0And we have come to believe in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by the faithfulness of Christ and not by the works of the law, because[57]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> by the works of the law no one will be justified. \u00a0But if while seeking to be justified in Christ we ourselves have also been found to be sinners, is Christ then one who encourages sin? \u00a0Absolutely not! \u00a0But if I build up again those things I once destroyed, I demonstrate[58]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> that I am one who breaks God\u2019s law. \u00a0For through the law I died to the law<\/a> so that I may live to God. \u00a0I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. \u00a0So the life I now live in the body, I live because of the faithfulness of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. \u00a0I do not set aside God\u2019s grace, because if righteousness could come through the law, then Christ died for nothing!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It bears mentioning in this #MeToo<\/a> moment that I have no interest in, or intention to, silence women or inhibit them from reporting crimes.\u00a0 I recall<\/a> being so deeply moved by Abel Ferrara’s<\/a> and Zo\u00eb Lund’s<\/a> fictional nun in Bad Lieutenant<\/a> because her confession<\/a> was so unexpected in such a dark tale.\u00a0 All political posturing<\/a> aside, it is important that teenage boys understand that pinning a young woman to a bed to grope her is assault not love (1 Corinthians 13:4-13<\/a>).<\/p>\n
