<\/a>The words \u1f00\u03c6\u1f79\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03bc\u03b1 and \u1f00\u03c6\u03b1\u1f77\u03c1\u03b5\u03bc\u03b1 (wave offering<\/em>) in the Septuagint were not used in the New Testament, nor were any forms of \u1f41\u03bb\u03bf\u03ba\u03b1\u03cd\u03c4\u03c9\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2 (burnt offering<\/em>) or \u03ba\u1f71\u03c1\u03c0\u03c9\u03bc\u1f71 (NET: offering made by fire<\/em>, gift<\/em>).\u00a0 I\u2019ve already considered all of the occurrences of \u1f41\u03bb\u03bf\u03ba\u03b1\u1f7b\u03c4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1.[3]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 So I\u2019ll continue with \u03c4\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u1f77\u03c9\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2 (Hebrews 7:11 NET):<\/p>\n

So if perfection (\u03c4\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u1f77\u03c9\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2)<\/em> had in fact been possible through the Levitical priesthood \u2013 for on that basis[4]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> the people received the law[5]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> \u2013 what further need would there have been for another priest to arise, said to be in the order of Melchizedek and not in Aaron\u2019s order?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I\u2019ll back up here a bit to consider Melchizedek (Hebrews 6:17-20 NET):<\/p>\n

God wanted to demonstrate more clearly to the heirs of the promise<\/a> that his purpose was unchangeable, and so he intervened with an oath, so that we who have found refuge in him may find strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us through two unchangeable things, since it is impossible for God[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> to lie. \u00a0We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, sure and steadfast, which reaches inside behind the curtain, where Jesus our forerunner entered on our behalf, since he became a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Jesus<\/em>\u2026became <\/em>(\u03b3\u03b5\u03bd\u1f79\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2, a form of \u03b3\u03af\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek<\/em>.\u00a0 This alludes to Psalm 110:4, contrasted in the table below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Now this<\/em> Melchizedek<\/em><\/strong>, the writer of Hebrews explained, king of Salem<\/em><\/strong>, priest of the most high God<\/em><\/strong>, met Abraham <\/em><\/strong>(Genesis 14:17-24<\/a>) as he was returning from defeating the kings<\/em><\/strong> and<\/em> blessed him<\/em><\/strong>. \u00a0To him also<\/em> Abraham apportioned a tithe of everything<\/em><\/strong>. \u00a0His name first means king of righteousness, then king of Salem<\/strong>, that is, king of peace. \u00a0Without father, without mother, without genealogy, he has neither beginning of days nor end of life but is like the son of God, and he remains a priest for all time<\/em>. [7]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

The Jewish Encyclopedia<\/a> (1906) entry on Melchizedek<\/a> read:<\/p>\n

The story is neither an invention nor the product of a copyist’s error, as Cheyne (“Encyc. Bibl.”) thinks, but rests upon ancient Jerusalemic tradition (as Josephus, “B. J.” vi. 10, affirms; comp. Gunkel, “Genesis,” 1901, p. 261), “Zedek” being an ancient name of Jerusalem…The city’s first king, accordingly, was known either as “Adoni Zedek” (Josh. x. 1 <\/em>et seq. ; comp. Judges i. 5-7, where “Adonizedek” is the correct reading) or as “Malkizedek.”\u00a0 The fact that he united the royal with the priestly dignity, like all ancient (heathen) kings, made him a welcome type to the composer of the triumphal song (Ps. cx.).<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Adoni-Zedek<\/a> was one of the five kings Joshua killed (Joshua 10:22-27<\/a>).\u00a0 The writer of Hebrews, however, who I think wrote down what Jesus taught<\/a> his disciples after his resurrection, highlighted\u00a0a change in the law <\/em>based on \u03b4\u1f7b\u03bd\u03b1\u03bc\u03b9\u03bd \u03b6\u03c9\u1fc6\u03c2 \u1f00\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03bb\u1f7b\u03c4\u03bf\u03c5, the power of an indestructible life<\/em> (Hebrews 7:12-17 NET):<\/p>\n

For when the priesthood changes, a change in the law must come as well. \u00a0Yet the one these things are spoken about belongs to a different tribe, and no one from that tribe has ever officiated at the altar. \u00a0For it is clear that our Lord is descended from Judah, yet Moses[8]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> said nothing about priests[9]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> in connection with that tribe. \u00a0And this is even clearer if another priest arises in the likeness of Melchizedek, who has become a priest not by a legal regulation about physical[10]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> descent but by the power of an indestructible (\u1f00\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03bb\u1f7b\u03c4\u03bf\u03c5, a form of \u1f00\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac\u03bb\u03c5\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> life. \u00a0For here is the testimony about him: \u201cYou are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The verb translated here is the testimony<\/em> was \u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03c5\u03c1\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9 (a form of \u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03c5\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) in the NET parallel Greek<\/a> text and NA28<\/sup><\/a>.\u00a0 In the Stephanus Textus Receptus<\/a> and Byzantine Majority Text<\/a> it was \u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03c5\u03c1\u03b5\u03b9 (KJV: he testifieth<\/em>).\u00a0 The only difference between them is that the former<\/a> is passive while the latter is active.\u00a0 This exercise reminded me that God testifies through David’s<\/a> psalm whether the verb is active or passive.<\/p>\n

In 1906 Isidore Singer<\/a> and Kaufmann Kohler<\/a> claimed that Adoni-Bezek (Judges 1:5-7<\/a>) was actually Adoni-Zedek or Melchizedek.\u00a0 So whether Melchizedek was a line of king-priests or some otherworldy being, his reputation for an indestructible life <\/em>was what the Holy Spirit keyed on.\u00a0 And though the philosophical bent of my mind usually groans and rolls its metaphorical eyes when confronted with prefigures and types, I have to acknowledge the unsettling oddity if Israel was obliged to kill the king of righteousness and peace more than once (the second time he died in captivity in Jerusalem<\/a>) during their conquest of Canaan.<\/p>\n

The writer of Hebrews continued with Jesus\u2019 actual point (Hebrews 7:18, 19 NET):<\/p>\n

On the one hand a former command is set aside because it is weak<\/a> and useless, for the law made nothing perfect (\u1f10\u03c4\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u1f77\u03c9\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd, a form of \u03c4\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em>. \u00a0On the other hand a better hope is introduced, through which we draw near to God.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The KJV reads: For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did<\/em>\u2026\u00a0 It is almost unique<\/a> among English translations.\u00a0 Paul described this better hope<\/em> as the love of God…poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us <\/em>(Romans 5:1-5 NET):<\/p>\n

Therefore, since we have been declared righteous by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in the hope of God\u2019s glory. \u00a0Not only this, but we also rejoice in sufferings<\/a> (\u03b8\u03bb\u1f77\u03c8\u03b5\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd, a form of \u03b8\u03bb\u03af\u03c8\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em>, knowing that suffering (\u03b8\u03bb\u1fd6\u03c8\u03b9\u03c2)<\/em> produces endurance<\/a>, and endurance, character, and character, hope. \u00a0And hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And the others who became priests were numerous, because death prevented them from continuing in office, but he holds his priesthood permanently since he lives forever. \u00a0So he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them. \u00a0For it[14]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> is indeed fitting for us to have such a high priest: holy, innocent, undefiled, separate from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. \u00a0He has no need to do every day what those priests do, to offer sacrifices first for their own sins and then for the sins of the people, since he did this in offering himself once for all. \u00a0For the law appoints as high priests men subject to weakness, but the word of solemn affirmation that came after the law appoints a son made perfect (\u03c4\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9\u03c9\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03bd, another form of \u03c4\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9\u03cc\u03c9) <\/em>forever.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
