This is a continuation<\/a> of ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s\u00a0<\/em>(\u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4<\/a>) instruction to Moses: They<\/em>[1]<\/sup><\/a> are to eat those things by which atonement <\/em>(k\u00e2phar<\/em>, \u05db\u05e4\u05e8<\/a>; Septuagint<\/a>: \u1f21\u03b3\u03b9\u1f71\u03c3\u03b8\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd, a form of \u1f01\u03b3\u03b9\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>) was made to consecrate and to set them apart, but no one else may eat them, for they are holy<\/em>.[2]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The atonement of Aaron and his sons continued with the breast of the second ram<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Though \u03c4\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9\u1f7d\u03c3\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2, the translation of \u05d4\u05de\u05dc\u05d0\u05d9\u05dd (mill\u00fb\u02bc<\/em>) in the Septuagint, doesn’t occur in the New Testament, I\u2019ve already considered its root \u03c4\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u1f77\u03c9\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2 in two essays.[3]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The Greek word \u1f10\u03c0\u1f77\u03b8\u03b5\u03bc\u03b1 is another<\/a>, used to translate \u05ea\u05e0\u05d5\u05e4\u05d4 (te<\/sup>n\u00fbph\u00e2h<\/em>) in the Septuagint, that does not occur in the New Testament.\u00a0 But we have come finally to those things<\/em> Aaron and his sons are to eat <\/em>that no one else may eat <\/em>(Exodus 29:27, 28 NET):<\/p>\n

I still plan to reserve any further study of forms of \u1f01\u03b3\u03b9\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9 for another series of essays<\/a>.\u00a0 The Greek words \u1f00\u03c6\u1f79\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03bc\u03b1, another translation of \u05d4\u05ea\u05e0\u05d5\u05e4\u05d4 (te<\/sup>n\u00fbph\u00e2h<\/em>), \u1f00\u03c6\u03b1\u03b9\u03c1\u1f73\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2 (a form of \u1f00\u03c6\u03b1\u1f77\u03c1\u03b5\u03bc\u03b1), a translation of \u05d4\u05ea\u05e8\u05d5\u05de\u05d4 (te<\/sup>r\u00fbm\u00e2h<\/em>) and \u1f00\u03c6\u03b1\u1f77\u03c1\u03b5\u03bc\u03b1 were not used in the New Testament.\u00a0 But the word translated peace offerings <\/em>above was \u05e9\u05dc\u05de\u05d9\u05d4\u05dd<\/a> (shelem<\/em>) in Hebrew.\u00a0 It was translated \u03c4\u1ff6\u03bd \u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u1f71\u03c4\u03c9\u03bd<\/a> \u03c4\u1ff6\u03bd \u03c3\u03c9\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u1f77\u03c9\u03bd (a form<\/a> of \u03c3\u03c9\u03c4\u03ae\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>[4]<\/sup><\/a>) in the Septuagint, which was translated back into English<\/a> as \u201cthe victims of deliverance.\u201d\u00a0 This was a fairly rich vein to mine.<\/p>\n

Luke wrote in his Gospel narrative (Luke 2:25-32 NET):<\/p>\n

Now there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon who was righteous and devout,\u00a0looking for the restoration of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. \u00a0It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen[5]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> the Lord\u2019s Christ. \u00a0So Simeon, directed by the Spirit, came into the temple courts, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what was customary according to the law, Simeon took him in his[6]<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>arms and blessed God, saying, \u201cNow, according to your word, Sovereign Lord, permit your servant to depart in peace. \u00a0For my eyes have seen your salvation (\u03c3\u03c9\u03c4\u1f75\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf\u03bd)<\/em> that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples: a light, for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So Simeon, led by the Holy Spirit, declared Jesus the Sovereign Lord\u2019s salvation<\/em>, his peace offering<\/em>, his victim of deliverance.\u00a0 Again, I turn to Luke\u2019s Gospel narrative (Luke 3:1-6 NET):<\/p>\n

In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was tetrarch[7]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> of Galilee, and his brother Philip was tetrarch of the region of Iturea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias was tetrarch of Abilene, during the high priesthood[8]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the[9]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> son of Zechariah in the wilderness. \u00a0He went into all the region around the Jordan River, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. \u00a0As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet,[10]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> \u201cThe voice of one shouting in the wilderness:<\/em><\/strong> \u2018Prepare the way for the Lord, make<\/em><\/strong> his paths straight<\/strong>. \u00a0Every valley will be filled,<\/strong><\/em> and every mountain and hill will be brought low, and the crooked will be made straight, and the rough ways will be made smooth,<\/em><\/strong> and all humanity will see the salvation <\/strong>(\u03c3\u03c9\u03c4\u1f75\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf\u03bd)<\/em> of God.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Luke indirectly (John 1:29-34<\/a>) ascribed a prophecy about ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>to Jesus.\u00a0 Here is the scripture he quoted from the Tanakh and KJV:\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

The first thing I noticed is that there is no mention of the salvation of God <\/em>in translations made from contemporary Hebrew<\/a>.\u00a0 So I compared Luke\u2019s Greek to the Septuagint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Here are both clauses: \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76 \u1f40\u03c6\u03b8\u1f75\u03c3\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9 \u1f21 \u03b4\u1f79\u03be\u03b1 \u03ba\u03c5\u03c1\u1f77\u03bf\u03c5 (NETS: \u201cThen the glory of the Lord shall appear\u201d), \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76 \u1f44\u03c8\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9 \u03c0\u1fb6\u03c3\u03b1 \u03c3\u1f70\u03c1\u03be \u03c4\u1f78 \u03c3\u03c9\u03c4\u1f75\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf\u03bd \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 \u03b8\u03b5\u03bf\u1fe6 (NETS: \u201cand all flesh shall see the salvation of God\u201d).\u00a0 Luke only quoted the latter. \u00a0I am less concerned that he ended his quotation before \u1f45\u03c4\u03b9 \u03ba\u1f7b\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2 \u1f10\u03bb\u1f71\u03bb\u03b7\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd (NETS: \u201cbecause the Lord has spoken\u201d[11]<\/sup><\/a>).\u00a0 Luke also substituted \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 (his<\/em>) for \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 \u03b8\u03b5\u03bf\u1fe6 \u1f21\u03bc\u1ff6\u03bd (for our God<\/em>) and \u1f41\u03b4\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2 \u03bb\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2 (ways will be made smooth<\/em>) for \u03c0\u03b5\u03b4\u1f77\u03b1 (places plain<\/em>).<\/p>\n

I compared Isaiah 40:3-5 from the BLB version of the Septuagint with the Elpenor version (Table1<\/a> below).\u00a0 The only difference was \u1f41\u03b4\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2 \u03bb\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2 rather than \u03c0\u03b5\u03b4\u1f77\u03b1.\u00a0 That alleviated my initial concern<\/a> somewhat.\u00a0 If believers had changed \u03c0\u03b5\u03b4\u1f77\u03b1 to \u1f41\u03b4\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2 \u03bb\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2 to conform better to Luke\u2019s quotation, why didn\u2019t they go all out and change \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 \u03b8\u03b5\u03bf\u1fe6 \u1f21\u03bc\u1ff6\u03bd to \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 and drop \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76 \u1f40\u03c6\u03b8\u1f75\u03c3\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9 \u1f21 \u03b4\u1f79\u03be\u03b1 \u03ba\u03c5\u03c1\u1f77\u03bf\u03c5 all together?\u00a0 These may be two distinct versions of the Septuagint.\u00a0 So why not imagine a third version that conforms even better to Luke\u2019s quotation?<\/p>\n

Frankly, without having a third version in hand for comparison I don\u2019t want the complication.\u00a0 Paul called Jesus \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 \u03bc\u03b5\u03b3\u1f71\u03bb\u03bf\u03c5 \u03b8\u03b5\u03bf\u1fe6 (our great God<\/a><\/em>) in an ostensibly private letter to Titus.\u00a0 I could see Luke\u2019s substitution of \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 for \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 \u03b8\u03b5\u03bf\u1fe6 \u1f21\u03bc\u1ff6\u03bd as a courtesy to believing Jews.\u00a0 The word \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 (his<\/em>) referring back to ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>did not change the meaning at all, but it was a softer touch than calling Jesus our God<\/em>.\u00a0 And Luke may have dropped \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76 \u1f40\u03c6\u03b8\u1f75\u03c3\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9 \u1f21 \u03b4\u1f79\u03be\u03b1 \u03ba\u03c5\u03c1\u1f77\u03bf\u03c5 (NETS: \u201cThen the glory of the Lord shall appear\u201d) at the Holy Spirit\u2019s behest.\u00a0 Jesus\u2019 first advent was by no means the full revelation of his glory as ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> come in human flesh (Malachi 3:1-7a Tanakh).\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n
