Forgiveness, Part 8"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When I studied the Bible looking for rules to obey I was the project, and I was in charge of my reform efforts.\u00a0 I determined which rules to obey and which didn\u2019t apply to me.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t necessarily see it that way at the time.\u00a0 I thought I was doing it all for God\u2019s sake.\u00a0 But when I began to study the Bible to know Him, and Jesus Christ whom He sent,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/22\/davids-forgiveness-part-8\/#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> I was distracted.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t stay so focused on myself.\u00a0 Oh, I\u2019m still the project.\u00a0 But now I\u2019m God\u2019s project and He is in charge of the reform effort.\u00a0 Here is a case in point.<\/p>\n<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/16\/davids-forgiveness-part-7\/\">last essay<\/a> I began to consider whether I could believe that David exercised some form of <em>Do not judge so that you will not be judged<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/22\/davids-forgiveness-part-8\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a> with his son when he suspected something amiss in Absalom\u2019s request regarding Amnon.\u00a0 I wondered if the Lord regarded that as something after his own heart.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/22\/davids-forgiveness-part-8\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> But the more I thought about it, the more I disliked the idea.\u00a0 In my resistance to it I was unmasked.\u00a0 The main reason I don\u2019t want to believe that David exercised some form of <em>Do not judge so that you will not be judged <\/em>with Absalom was that it didn\u2019t work.\u00a0 Absalom killed Amnon anyway.\u00a0 And I know the rest of the story.\u00a0 It didn\u2019t even work in the long run on Absalom.\u00a0 It didn\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/27\/davids-forgiveness-part-2\/\">deliver the goods<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t want to be <em>like<\/em> [my] <em>Father in <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/08\/13\/father-son-and-holy-spirit-part-3\/#_ftn8\">heaven<\/a><\/em>, [who] <em>causes the sun to rise on <strong>the evil<\/strong> and the good, and sends rain on the righteous <strong>and the unrighteous<\/strong><\/em>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/22\/davids-forgiveness-part-8\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a> not really, not if it doesn\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/11\/jedidiah-part-5\/\">work out<\/a>.\u00a0 And I want to see it work out.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to walk by faith on something like this.\u00a0 And, frankly, I didn\u2019t know that about myself when I began the previous essay.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how to change that about myself now.<\/p>\n<p>I know that I used to object to not judging others because those \u201cothers\u201d would think they were putting something over on me, that I didn\u2019t know what they were really thinking.\u00a0 They would think I was stupid, and I\u2019d, you know, come off like a dolt.\u00a0 I probably still feel that way somewhere inside, considering the way I analyzed David\u2019s actions or inactions.\u00a0 I just can\u2019t muster whatever it would take to use that as an objection anymore.<\/p>\n<p>Whether Absalom thought he was right to kill Amnon or not, once the deed was done he <em>fled and went to King Talmai son of Ammihud of Geshur<\/em>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/22\/davids-forgiveness-part-8\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a> his mother Maacah\u2019s father.\u00a0 David grieved for another firstborn son, his actual firstborn, Amnon born to Ahinoam the Jezreelite.\u00a0 Absalom was banished to Geshur for three years.\u00a0 David <em>longed to go to Absalom, for he had since been consoled over the death of Amnon<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/22\/davids-forgiveness-part-8\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This longing was certainly something dear to God\u2019s heart.\u00a0 [Addendum 3\/12\/2021: In the Septuagint this is described as the easing of a longing against Absalom.]\u00a0 <em>Ephraim is my firstborn son<\/em>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/22\/davids-forgiveness-part-8\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a> God spoke through Jeremiah.\u00a0 This is the name used by the prophets to personify the northern kingdom of Israel that rebelled against Solomon\u2019s son Rehoboam.\u00a0 <em>Ephraim has attached himself to idols; Do not go near him!<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/22\/davids-forgiveness-part-8\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a> The Lord had a lot to say about Ephraim.<\/p>\n<p><em>I know Ephraim all too well; the evil of Israel is not hidden from me.\u00a0 For you have engaged in prostitution <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lxx\/hos\/5\/3\/t_bibles_867003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Septuagint<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/exep.html#exeporneuse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03be\u03b5\u03c0\u1f79\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03c5\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ekp.html#ekporneuw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03ba\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>)<em>, O Ephraim; Israel has defiled itself. \u00a0Their wicked deeds do not allow them to return to their God; because a spirit of idolatry<\/em>\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lxx\/hos\/5\/4\/t_bibles_867004\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Septuagint<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/por.html#porneias\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>) controls<em> their heart, and they do not acknowledge the Lord<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/22\/davids-forgiveness-part-8\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0<em>Within sixty-five years Ephraim will no longer exist as a nation<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/22\/davids-forgiveness-part-8\/#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0<em>Ephraim will be ruined in the day of judgment!<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/22\/davids-forgiveness-part-8\/#sdfootnote11sym\" name=\"sdfootnote11anc\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>Ephraim will be oppressed, crushed under judgment, because he was determined to pursue worthless idols.<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/22\/davids-forgiveness-part-8\/#sdfootnote12sym\" name=\"sdfootnote12anc\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Whenever I want to heal Israel, <\/em>the Lord continued, <em>the sin of Ephraim is revealed, and the evil deeds of Samaria <\/em>[the capital of the northern kingdom] <em>are exposed.\u00a0 For they do what is wrong; thieves break into houses, and gangs rob people out in the streets. \u00a0They do not realize that I remember all of their wicked deeds.\u00a0 Their evil deeds have now surrounded them; their sinful deeds are always before me<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/22\/davids-forgiveness-part-8\/#sdfootnote13sym\" name=\"sdfootnote13anc\"><sup>13<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>Although Ephraim has built many altars for sin offerings, these have become altars for sinning! \u00a0I spelled out my law for him in great detail, but they regard it as something totally unknown to them!<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/22\/davids-forgiveness-part-8\/#sdfootnote14sym\" name=\"sdfootnote14anc\"><sup>14<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I can\u2019t imagine a parent who can\u2019t hear God\u2019s hurt and yearning,<em> it was I who led Ephraim, I took them by the arm; but they did not acknowledge that I had healed them<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/22\/davids-forgiveness-part-8\/#sdfootnote15sym\" name=\"sdfootnote15anc\"><sup>15<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>How can I give you up, O Ephraim?\u00a0 How can I surrender you, O Israel?\u2026I have had a change of heart!\u00a0 All my tender compassions are aroused!<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/22\/davids-forgiveness-part-8\/#sdfootnote16sym\" name=\"sdfootnote16anc\"><sup>16<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Just as Jonadab couldn\u2019t bear to see Amnon\u2019s longing without offering him advice to ensnare Tamar,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/22\/davids-forgiveness-part-8\/#sdfootnote17sym\" name=\"sdfootnote17anc\"><sup>17<\/sup><\/a> Joab was so moved by David\u2019s longing for Absalom he hired an actress.\u00a0 <em>Pretend to be in mourning<\/em>, Joab instructed her, <em>and put on garments for mourning.\u00a0 Don\u2019t anoint yourself with oil. Instead, act like a woman who has been mourning for the dead for some time. \u00a0Go to the king and speak to him in the following fashion<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/22\/davids-forgiveness-part-8\/#sdfootnote18sym\" name=\"sdfootnote18anc\"><sup>18<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The actress claimed to be a widow who had two sons.\u00a0 They got into a fight out in the field where no one could separate them.\u00a0 One killed the other.\u00a0 <em>Now the entire family has risen up against your servant, saying, \u201cTurn over the one who struck down his brother, so that we can execute him and avenge the death of his brother whom he killed.\u201d<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/22\/davids-forgiveness-part-8\/#sdfootnote19sym\" name=\"sdfootnote19anc\"><sup>19<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0There would be no one then to carry on the name of her husband.\u00a0 <em>Go to your home<\/em>, David said.\u00a0 <em>I will give instructions concerning your situation<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/22\/davids-forgiveness-part-8\/#sdfootnote20sym\" name=\"sdfootnote20anc\"><sup>20<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The actress wasn\u2019t satisfied with his answer.\u00a0 She pressed him further, and David said, <em>Bring to me whoever speaks to you, and he won\u2019t bother you again!<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/22\/davids-forgiveness-part-8\/#sdfootnote21sym\" name=\"sdfootnote21anc\"><sup>21<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Still, the actress wasn\u2019t satisfied, <em>In that case, let the king invoke the name of the Lord your God so that the avenger of blood may not kill!<\/em> She wanted David to swear an oath.\u00a0 So David said, <em>As surely as the Lord lives, not a single hair of your son\u2019s head will fall to the ground<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/22\/davids-forgiveness-part-8\/#sdfootnote22sym\" name=\"sdfootnote22anc\"><sup>22<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Then she blamed David for Absalom\u2019s exile (2 Samuel 14:13-17 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Why have you devised something like this against God\u2019s people?\u00a0 When the king speaks in this fashion, he makes himself guilty, for the king has not brought back the one he has banished. \u00a0Certainly we must die, and are like water spilled on the ground that cannot be gathered up again.\u00a0 But God does not take away life; instead he devises ways for the banished to be restored. \u00a0I have now come to speak with my lord the king about this matter, because the people have made me fearful.\u00a0 But your servant said, \u201cI will speak to the king!\u00a0 Perhaps the king will do what his female servant asks. \u00a0Yes!\u00a0 The king may listen and deliver his female servant from the hand of the man who seeks to remove both me and my son from the inheritance God has given us!\u201d \u00a0So your servant said, \u201cMay the word of my lord the king be my security, for my lord the king is like the angel of God when it comes to deciding between right and wrong! \u00a0May the Lord your God be with you!\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Joab schemed with the actress to trap and trick David as Nathan had done.\u00a0 Nathan was sent by God so that David would acknowledge and repent of his sin.\u00a0 The actress was sent by Joab so that David would follow his longing for Absalom to its logical conclusion.\u00a0 <em>Did Joab put you up to all of this?<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/22\/davids-forgiveness-part-8\/#sdfootnote23sym\" name=\"sdfootnote23anc\"><sup>23<\/sup><\/a> David asked the actress.\u00a0 When he learned the truth he wasn\u2019t angry with Joab or the actress.\u00a0 He said to Joab, <em>All right!\u00a0 I will do this thing!\u00a0 Go and bring back the young man Absalom!<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/22\/davids-forgiveness-part-8\/#sdfootnote24sym\" name=\"sdfootnote24anc\"><sup>24<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Again, though David may appear foolish, he was a man after God\u2019s own heart.\u00a0 He had an uncanny ability to see through all the commandments, laws, crimes and punishments to God\u2019s loyal love and great compassion.\u00a0 A thousand years or so before Jesus spoke the parable, David demonstrated that he was not like the <em>evil slave<\/em> who was forgiven a great debt by his Lord but would not forgive his fellow slave a lesser debt.\u00a0 <em>I <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/category\/introduction\/forgiveness\/\">forgave<\/a> you all that debt because you begged me! \u00a0Should you not have <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/07\/forgiveness\/\">shown mercy<\/a> to your fellow slave, just as <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/07\/forgiveness\/#sdfootnote18sym\">I<\/a> showed it to you?<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/22\/davids-forgiveness-part-8\/#sdfootnote25sym\" name=\"sdfootnote25anc\"><sup>25<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Addendum:<\/strong> March 13, 2021<br \/>\nTables comparing <a
