{"id":113,"date":"2012-05-13T21:24:03","date_gmt":"2012-05-13T15:24:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/?p=113"},"modified":"2023-05-09T08:31:28","modified_gmt":"2023-05-09T13:31:28","slug":"a-monotonous-cycle-part-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/religiousmind.net\/?p=113","title":{"rendered":"A Monotonous Cycle, Part 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When the people settled in the promised land of Israel, they were remarkably free of governmental control.\u00a0 They were responsible to God and his laws, corporately and individually.\u00a0 There was a priestly governance of sorts in place, responsible for the sacrificial system of atonement and thanksgiving and some health matters.\u00a0 But there was little or no civil government, no king or bureaucracy.\u00a0 This is the time of the Judges, leaders raised up by God for specific purposes.\u00a0 And it is a time that is summed up in the second chapter of the book of <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/Judges+2:11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Judges<\/a><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/13\/a-monotonous-cycle-part-1\/#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> under the heading <em>A Monotonous Cycle<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Israel forgot God and worshipped the gods of the nations around them.\u00a0 Then God handed them over to be ruled and exploited by the kings of the nations around <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/Judges+2:14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">them<\/a>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/13\/a-monotonous-cycle-part-1\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Eventually the oppressed people cried out to God for aid.\u00a0 God took pity on them and raised up a leader, or Judge, whose exploits in battle and civil administration were <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/Judges+2:18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blessed<\/a> with success.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/13\/a-monotonous-cycle-part-1\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This monotonous cycle was a vicious circle (Judges 2:19 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When a leader died, the next generation would again act more wickedly than the previous one. \u00a0They would follow after other gods, worshiping them and bowing down to them. \u00a0They did not give up their practices or their stubborn ways.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>God granted Israel\u2019s request for a king, but instructed Samuel to warn them how a king would treat them.\u00a0 He would conscript their sons and daughters into his army and household service.\u00a0 He would confiscate their best land and vineyards to give to his favorite servants.\u00a0 He would demand a tenth of all they owned and could accumulate year after year for his own use.\u00a0 In other words, their king would treat them more or less like the foreign kings treated them when they were punished by God\u2014all the time, without respite.\u00a0 More than that, when they complained to God because of their king\u2019s oppression, God would not answer.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/13\/a-monotonous-cycle-part-1\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But the people refused to heed Samuel\u2019s warning. \u00a0Instead they said, \u201cNo! There will be a king over us! \u00a0We will be like all the other nations. \u00a0Our king will judge us and lead us and fight our battles.\u201d<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/13\/a-monotonous-cycle-part-1\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Four or so generations later the people complained to Rehoboam after Solomon\u2019s death (1 Kings 12:4 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Your father made us work too hard. \u00a0Now if you lighten the demands he made and don\u2019t make us work as hard, we will serve you.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So Solomon, the third king of Israel, the richest and wisest king not only of Israel but of his generation, according to the Bible, became the fulfillment of God\u2019s unheeded warning to Israel about kings, this same <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/2+Samuel+12:24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Solomon who was named Jedidiah<\/a><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/13\/a-monotonous-cycle-part-1\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a>\u2014<em>loved by the Lord<\/em>\u2014by God himself.\u00a0 In that light then, it doesn\u2019t seem so strange that Solomon\u2019s wealth was both the fulfillment of God\u2019s promise and a direct disobedience to God\u2019s law.\u00a0 After all, the idea that wealth can be simultaneously a blessing and a curse is not completely foreign to me.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Addendum:<\/strong> March 12, 2020<br \/>\nTables comparing <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/13\/a-monotonous-cycle-part-1\/#_Table1\">Judges 2:19<\/a>;
