<\/a>I\u2019ll call this the mechanical translation, not to demean it.\u00a0 On the contrary, when I began this study I was pedantic enough to favor the mechanical translation over all others.\u00a0 This study has broadened my thinking some.\u00a0 Notice the translators of the NET didn\u2019t choose the mechanical translation good<\/em>.\u00a0 Their translation right <\/em>reveals an awareness of Paul\u2019s righteous<\/em>, even as it answers the question: what is good<\/em>?\u00a0 The answer right<\/em> alludes to the law: God\u2019s law is good; obey his law.<\/p>\n

The translators of the Septuagint chose \u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u1f79\u03bd<\/a> (a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>) for \u05d8\u05bd\u05d5\u05b9\u05d1<\/a> (\u1e6d\u00f4\u1e07<\/em>) in Genesis.\u00a0 This is the \u201cbeautiful good\u201d I\u2019ve considered before<\/a> in the New Testament.\u00a0 But they didn\u2019t choose the mechanical translation in Psalm 14:1b either.<\/p>\n

The rabbis who translated the Septuagint seem to have answered the same question: What is the beautiful good<\/em>?\u00a0 Their answer \u03c7\u03c1\u03b7\u03c3\u03c4\u03cc\u03c4\u03b7\u03c2<\/a> also reflects their attitude toward the law: \u201cgentleness, goodness, kindness, generosity, uprightness.\u201d<\/p>\n

Paul, I think, took this opportunity to answer a different question: Why is there none that doeth good<\/em>?\u00a0 There is no one righteous, not even one<\/em> (\u03bf\u1f50\u03ba \u1f14\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03bd \u03b4\u1f77\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2 \u03bf\u1f50\u03b4\u1f72 \u03b5\u1f37\u03c2).\u00a0 That answer makes this more of an allusion to, than a quotation of, Psalm 14:1b.<\/p>\n
