Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet<\/em><\/strong>.[1]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 \u201cThat\u2019s me,\u201d I responded as I read that this time.\u00a0 The Greek word translated enemies <\/em>was \u1f10\u03c7\u03b8\u03c1\u03bf\u1f7b\u03c2<\/a> (a form of \u1f10\u03c7\u03b8\u03c1\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>). \u00a0For\u00a0if\u00a0while we\u00a0were\u00a0enemies <\/em>(\u1f10\u03c7\u03b8\u03c1\u03bf\u1f76<\/a>, another form of \u1f10\u03c7\u03b8\u03c1\u03cc\u03c2), Paul wrote believers in Rome,\u00a0we were\u00a0<\/em>reconciled\u00a0to\u00a0God through\u00a0the\u00a0death\u00a0of\u00a0his\u00a0Son,\u00a0how much\u00a0more, since we have been\u00a0reconciled, will we be\u00a0saved\u00a0by\u00a0his\u00a0life?<\/em>[2]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0But I\u2019d never thought of it this way before.<\/p>\n

I had vaguely assumed that making his enemies a footstool referenced Jesus as He treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty<\/em>.[3]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 As I looked at other quotations of Psalm 110:1 in the New Testament it made a little sense why I had thought that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

According to Strong\u2019s Concordance \u05d4\u05d3\u05dd (h\u0103d\u00f4m<\/em>) was \u201cFrom an unused root meaning to\u00a0stamp<\/em> upon.\u201d\u00a0 Paul alluded to Psalm 8:6 (1 Corinthians 15:24-28 NET; Table<\/a>):<\/p>\n

Then comes the end, when [Jesus]<\/em> hands over<\/a> the kingdom to God the Father, when he has brought to an end all rule and all authority and power. \u00a0For he must reign until[11]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> he has put[12]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> all his enemies under his feet. \u00a0The last enemy to be eliminated is death. \u00a0For he has put everything in subjection under his feet<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 But when it says \u201ceverything\u201d has been put in subjection, it is clear that this does not include the one who put everything in subjection to him. \u00a0And when all things are subjected to him, then the Son himself will be subjected to the one who subjected everything to him, so that God may be all in all.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Though Paul used \u1f51\u03c0\u1f78<\/a>\u00a0here both versions of the Septuagint had \u1f51\u03c0\u03bf\u03ba\u1f71\u03c4\u03c9<\/a>.\u00a0 The other differences are accounted for by switching from 2nd<\/sup> to 3rd<\/sup> person and from the genitive<\/a> to the accusative<\/a> case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Yet this time for some inexplicable reason as I read\u2014Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet<\/em><\/strong>\u2014the planet-sized<\/a> hassock of corpses evaporated back into my imagination as I recognized that Jesus\u2019 planet-sized\u00a0footstool <\/em>is made of living people, people like Mary.<\/p>\n

Now it was Mary<\/em>[14]<\/sup><\/a> who anointed the Lord with perfumed oil and wiped his feet dry with her hair<\/em>.[15]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0I imagine it was just as inexplicable to her that she, a sinner<\/em>, when she learned<\/em>[16]<\/sup><\/a> that Jesus was dining<\/em>[17]<\/sup><\/a> at the Pharisee\u2019s house<\/em>\u2026brought an alabaster jar of perfumed oil<\/em>;[18]<\/sup><\/a> weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears.\u00a0 She wiped them with her hair, kissed them, and anointed them with the perfumed oil<\/em>.[19]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Jesus explained the inexplicable: No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws<\/a> him…It is written in the prophets, \u2018And they will all be taught by<\/em>[20]<\/sup><\/a> God.\u2019\u00a0 Everyone<\/em>[21]<\/sup><\/a> who hears<\/em>[22]<\/sup><\/a> and learns from the Father comes to me<\/em>.[23]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0I had misunderstood this as a severe limitation to my whosoever-will-may-come<\/a> belief.\u00a0 But the Holy Spirit contrasted it to the difficulty those will<\/em>ful few had finding their own way through the rituals of old covenant religion.\u00a0 How<\/em>[24]<\/sup><\/a> narrow is the gate and difficult the way that leads to life<\/em>, Jesus summarized, and there are few who find it!<\/em>[25]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Mary<\/em>[26]<\/sup><\/a>\u2026sat<\/em>[27]<\/sup><\/a> at<\/em>[28]<\/sup><\/a> the Lord\u2019s<\/em>[29]<\/sup><\/a> feet and listened to what he said<\/em>.[30]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0And again,\u00a0Mary<\/em>[31]<\/sup><\/a> took three quarters of a pound of expensive aromatic oil from pure nard and anointed the feet of Jesus<\/em>[32]<\/sup><\/a> about a week before his crucifixion.<\/p>\n

<\/a>When Jesus appeared to Paul (a.k.a. Saul) as a blinding light<\/a> on the road to Damascus, He said, You are hurting <\/em>(\u03c3\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u1f79\u03bd, a form of \u03c3\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>) yourself by kicking against the goads<\/em>.[37]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Paul\u2019s religious mind fought so hard against that inexplicable drawing of God\u2014denying what he was taught, heard and learned from the Father so completely\u2014that the risen and ascended Lord Jesus was concerned about the harm he caused himself.\u00a0 And I, when I am lifted up from the earth<\/em>, Jesus had promised, will draw<\/a> all people to myself<\/em>,[38]<\/sup><\/a> even an angry jihadist<\/a> like Saul.<\/p>\n

This should not be forgotten though we may be more aware of what God\u2019s abundant grace bringing faith and love in Christ Jesus <\/em>made of him: for the one bringing forth in you both the desire and the effort<\/em>, Paul wrote from experience (Colossians 1:28, 29<\/a>), for the sake of his good pleasure \u2013 is God<\/em>.[39]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

I had begun to hear\u2014Father, forgive them<\/em>, for they don\u2019t know what they are doing<\/em>\u2014as something more than a limited and local prayer.\u00a0 I regard it, in fact, as the singularly relevant prayer of a salvation that does not depend on human desire or exertion, but on God who shows mercy<\/a><\/em>.[40]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But I was uncertain of God the Father’s answer to that prayer until that day I heard, Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 His enemies made into his footstool<\/em> was Jesus\u2019 joy (Hebrews 12:2b NET):<\/p>\n
