Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you don\u2019t understand these things? <\/em>Jesus said to Nicodemus. \u00a0I tell you the solemn truth, we speak about what we know and testify about what we have seen, but you people do not accept our testimony. \u00a0If I have told you people about earthly things and you don\u2019t believe, how will you believe if I tell you about heavenly things?<\/em>[1]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve hinted<\/a> at how Jesus\u2019 teaching informs my understanding of the Old Testament.\u00a0 Here I intend to get explicit about these earthly things<\/em>.\u00a0 Though I will do my best to make these essays interesting, the very repetitiveness of the subject matter may seem like A Monotonous Cycle<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

Here is the general introduction (Genesis 1:26-30 Tanakh):<\/p>\n

And G-d (<\/em>\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05dd<\/a>)<\/em> said: ‘Let us make man (<\/em>\u02bc\u00e2d\u00e2m, \u05d0\u05d3\u05dd<\/a>)<\/em> in our image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth’. \u00a0And G-d (<\/em>\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05dd)<\/em> created man (<\/em>\u02bc\u00e2d\u00e2m, \u05d4\u05d0\u05d3\u05dd)<\/em> in His own image, in the image of G-d (<\/em>\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05dd)<\/em> created He him; male and female created He them. \u00a0And G-d (<\/em>\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05dd)<\/em> blessed them; and G-d (<\/em>\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05dd)<\/em> said unto them: ‘Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that creepeth upon the earth’ [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/p>\n

And G-d (<\/em>\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05dd)<\/em> said: ‘Behold, I have given you every herb yielding seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed–to you it shall be for food; and to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is a living soul, I have given every green herb for food’ And it was so.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Here is a more detailed account of the involvement of\u00a0ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h\u00a0\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym<\/em>, corresponding to the Word <\/em>(\u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) in the opening chapter<\/a> of John\u2019s Gospel narrative (Genesis 2:4-9 Tanakh):<\/p>\n

These are the generations of the heaven and of the earth when they were created, in the day that HaShem (<\/em>ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4<\/a>)<\/em> G-d (<\/em>\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05dd)<\/em> made earth and heaven. \u00a0No shrub of the field was yet in the earth, and no herb of the field had yet sprung up; for HaShem (<\/em>ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4)<\/em> G-d (<\/em>\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05dd)<\/em> had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man (<\/em>\u02bc\u00e2d\u00e2m, \u05d5\u05d0\u05d3\u05dd)<\/em> to till the ground; but there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.\u00a0 Then HaShem (<\/em>ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4)<\/em> G-d (<\/em>\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05dd)<\/em> formed man (<\/em>\u02bc\u00e2d\u00e2m, \u05d4\u05d0\u05d3\u05dd)<\/em> of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man (<\/em>\u02bc\u00e2d\u00e2m, \u05d4\u05d0\u05d3\u05dd)<\/em> became a living soul.<\/p>\n

And HaShem (<\/em>ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4)<\/em> G-d (<\/em>\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05dd)<\/em> planted a garden eastward, in Eden; and there He put the man (<\/em>\u02bc\u00e2d\u00e2m, \u05d4\u05d0\u05d3\u05dd)<\/em> whom He had formed. \u00a0And out of the ground made HaShem (<\/em>ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4)<\/em> G-d (<\/em>\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05dd)<\/em> to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Hebrew word translated good <\/em>was \u05d8\u05d5\u05d1<\/a> (\u1e6d\u00f4b<\/em>).\u00a0 The light <\/em>was \u05d8\u05d5\u05d1<\/a> (\u1e6d\u00f4b<\/em>).\u00a0 The dry land<\/em> amidst the gathering together of the waters<\/em> was \u05d8\u05d5\u05d1<\/a> (\u1e6d\u00f4b<\/em>).\u00a0 The grass <\/em>the earth brought forth<\/em>\u2026 herb yielding seed after its kind, and tree bearing fruit, wherein is the seed thereof, after its kind<\/em>[2]<\/sup><\/a> was \u05d8\u05d5\u05d1<\/a> (\u1e6d\u00f4b<\/em>).\u00a0 The lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night<\/em>[3]<\/sup><\/a> were \u05d8\u05d5\u05d1<\/a> (\u1e6d\u00f4b<\/em>).\u00a0 The great sea-monsters, and every living creature that creepeth, wherewith the waters swarmed, after its kind, and every winged fowl after its kind<\/em>[4]<\/sup><\/a> were \u05d8\u05d5\u05d1<\/a> (\u1e6d\u00f4b<\/em>).\u00a0 The beast of the earth after its kind, and the cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the ground after its kind<\/em>[5]<\/sup><\/a> were \u05d8\u05d5\u05d1<\/a> (\u1e6d\u00f4b<\/em>).\u00a0 In fact, every thing that He<\/em> [\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym<\/em>, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05dd] had made<\/em>[6]<\/sup><\/a> was \u05d8\u05d5\u05d1<\/a> (\u1e6d\u00f4b<\/em>).<\/p>\n

The Hebrew word translated evil<\/em> was \u05d5\u05e8\u05e2<\/a> (r\u00e2\u02bd\u00e2h<\/em>) and this is its first occurrence.\u00a0 In other words, \u05d5\u05e8\u05e2 (r\u00e2\u02bd\u00e2h<\/em>) is as yet unknown.\u00a0 The story continued (Genesis 2:15-17 Tanakh):<\/p>\n

And HaShem (<\/em>ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4)<\/em> G-d (<\/em>\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05dd)<\/em> took the man (<\/em>\u02bc\u00e2d\u00e2m, \u05d4\u05d0\u05d3\u05dd)<\/em>, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. \u00a0And HaShem (<\/em>ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4)<\/em> G-d (<\/em>\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05dd)<\/em> commanded the man (<\/em>\u02bc\u00e2d\u00e2m, \u05d4\u05d0\u05d3\u05dd)<\/em>, saying: ‘Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat [Table<\/a>]<\/em>; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it; for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die’ [Table<\/a>]<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Thus the one and only law was given.\u00a0 Paul, after he was born from above<\/a><\/em> and led<\/a> <\/em>by the Holy Spirit, wrote to others like<\/a> him in Rome: For no one is declared righteous before him by the works of the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin<\/em>.[7]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 As David had prayed: Hear my prayer, O LORD <\/em>(ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4), give ear to my supplications: in thy faithfulness answer me, and in thy righteousness <\/em>[Table<\/a>]. \u00a0And enter not into judgment with thy servant: for in thy sight shall no man living be justified <\/em>[Table<\/a>].[8]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The story continued (Genesis 2:18-3:5 Tanakh):<\/p>\n

And HaShem (<\/em>ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4)<\/em> G-d (<\/em>\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05dd)<\/em> said: ‘It is not good (<\/em>\u1e6d\u00f4b, \u05d8\u05d5\u05d1)<\/em> that the man (<\/em>\u02bc\u00e2d\u00e2m, \u05d4\u05d0\u05d3\u05dd)<\/em> should be alone; I will make him a help meet for him.’ \u00a0And out of the ground HaShem (<\/em>ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4)<\/em> G-d (<\/em>\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05dd)<\/em> formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto the man (<\/em>\u02bc\u00e2d\u00e2m, \u05d4\u05d0\u05d3\u05dd)<\/em> to see what he would call them; and whatsoever the man (<\/em>\u02bc\u00e2d\u00e2m, \u05d4\u05d0\u05d3\u05dd)<\/em> would call every living creature, that was to be the name thereof. \u00a0And the man (<\/em>\u02bc\u00e2d\u00e2m, \u05d4\u05d0\u05d3\u05dd)<\/em> gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam (<\/em>\u02bc\u00e2d\u00e2m, \u05d5\u05dc\u05d0\u05d3\u05dd)<\/em> there was not found a help meet for him.<\/p>\n

And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat; and she gave also unto her husband with her, and he did eat. \u00a0And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig-leaves together, and made themselves girdles [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0And they heard the voice of HaShem (<\/em>ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4)<\/em> G-d (<\/em>\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05dd)<\/em> walking in the garden toward the cool of the day; and the man (<\/em>\u02bc\u00e2d\u00e2m, \u05d4\u05d0\u05d3\u05dd)<\/em> and his wife hid themselves from the presence of HaShem (<\/em>ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4)<\/em> G-d (<\/em>\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05dd)<\/em> amongst the trees of the garden.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So they learned the meaning of \u05d5\u05e8\u05e2 (r\u00e2\u02bd\u00e2h<\/em>): to mistrust ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>so as to disregard his word.\u00a0 And He afflicted thee, and suffered thee to hunger<\/em>, Moses told Israel, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that He might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every thing that proceedeth out of the mouth of HaShem<\/em> (ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4) doth man live<\/em>.[9]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 So then, just as sin entered the world through one man<\/em>\u2026[10]<\/sup><\/a> Paul wrote.<\/p>\n

To conclude with the moral of this story, I\u2019ve made a table interspersing Jesus\u2019 teaching to Nicodemus with Paul\u2019s teaching on the first and last Adam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
Jesus<\/a> answered, \u201cI tell you the solemn truth, unless a person is born of water and spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.<\/p>\n
