href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_yeh\u00f4v\u00e2h\">y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>fearful pronouncement:\u00a0<em>I punish\u00a0<\/em>(<em>p\u00e2qad<\/em>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_p\u00e2qad\">\u05e4\u05e7\u05d3<\/a>)\u00a0<em>the sons, grandsons, and great-grandsons for the sin of the fathers who reject me<\/em>\u2026<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/02\/08\/fear-deuteronomy-part-13\/#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 By way of review, I didn\u2019t find anything about the Hebrew word itself that would compel anyone to translate \u05e4\u05e7\u05d3 (<em>p\u00e2qad<\/em>) <em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/09\/fear-deuteronomy-part-9\/#_punish\">I punish<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 While I don\u2019t have any particular quarrel with calling the <em>plague <\/em>of <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Exodus+32:35\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Exodus 32:35<\/a> a punishment, I\u2019m not convinced it justifies translating <em>p\u00e2qad I punish<\/em> (\u05e4\u05e7\u05d3\u05d9) and <em>I will indeed punish<\/em> (\u05d5\u05e4\u05e7\u05d3\u05ea\u05d9) beyond this limited context.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/02\/08\/fear-deuteronomy-part-13\/#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After a kind of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/09\/fear-deuteronomy-part-9\/#_experiment\">thought experiment<\/a> I concluded that the translation of \u05e4\u05e7\u05d3 (<em>p\u00e2qad<\/em>) as <em>I punish<\/em> in <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Deuteronomy+5:9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Deuteronomy 5:9<\/a> was a perpetuation of an erroneous <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/09\/fear-deuteronomy-part-9\/#_notion\">popular notion<\/a> of religious minds that was clearly corrected in <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Ezekiel+18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ezekiel 18<\/a>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/02\/08\/fear-deuteronomy-part-13\/#_ftn3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0\u00a0Though the fixation on punishment in <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Leviticus+18:25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leviticus 18:25<\/a> is difficult for me to <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/12\/30\/fear-deuteronomy-part-11\/\">unravel<\/a>, it hasn\u2019t really dissuaded me from the idea that <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/25\/fear-deuteronomy-part-10\/#_visitation\">visits iniquity<\/a> itself upon descendants to consign all <em>to <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/12\/30\/fear-deuteronomy-part-11\/#_disobedience\">disobedience<\/a> so that he may show mercy to them all<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/02\/08\/fear-deuteronomy-part-13\/#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here I\u2019ll focus on the first occurrence of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_\u02bd\u00e2v\u00f4n\">\u02bd\u00e2v\u00f4n<\/a> <\/em>in to testify and he is a witness (he either [<em>\u02bc\u00f4<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_\u02bc\u00f4\">\u05d0\u05d5<\/a>] saw or [<em>\u02bc\u00f4<\/em>, \u05d0\u05d5] knew what had happened) and he does not make it known, then he will bear (<em>n\u00e2\u015b\u00e2\u02bc<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_n\u00e2\u015b\u00e2\u02bc\">\u05d5\u05e0\u05e9\u05c1\u05d0<\/a>) his punishment for iniquity (<em>\u02bd\u00e2v\u00f4n<\/em>, \u05e2\u05d5\u05e0\u05d5).<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>I\u2019ve written about this in another <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/07\/08\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-6\/#_error\">essay<\/a> so I had intended to point that out here and move on.\u00a0 But with the NET online open to <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Leviticus+5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leviticus 5<\/a> and the Hebrew text open in the right column I clicked on \u05d0\u05d5 at the beginning of verse 2 (Hebrew reads right to left).\u00a0 The occurrences of \u05d0\u05d5 lit up down the right column in Hebrew and their translations lit up down the left column in the English text of the NET.\u00a0 The highlighted instances of \u05d0\u05d5 seemed to bind the verses together.\u00a0 How did I decide that verse 1 could stand apart from the others?\u00a0 It was the only verse with <em>then he will bear his punishment for iniquity<\/em> (Tanakh: <em>then he shall bear his iniquity<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>It piqued my interest enough to study deeper so I looked at \u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd became \u201che will assume his guilt\u201d (Elpenor: <em>he shall bear his iniquity<\/em>).\u00a0 Was it just another way of saying he <em>is rabbis\u2019 attempt to accommodate both a technical meaning\u2014one is guilty of violation whether one perceives it or not\u2014and the more expansive meaning\u2014the whole impact knowledge of that guilt has on the one who receives it (or <em>bears <\/em>it)\u2014simultaneously, though I might not have seen any of it in English translation apart from this study.<\/p>\n<p>So where do I stand?<\/p>\n<p>The brothers\u2019 imprisonment for three days and Simeon\u2019s (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Genesis+42:24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Genesis 42:24<\/a>) longer incarceration certainly qualify as <em>punishment<\/em>.\u00a0 That punishment, however, came from Joseph, a ruler in Egypt, not God.\u00a0 I\u2019m not insensitive to the question, who but God could orchestrate such a circumstance in real life?\u00a0 And I wonder if Joseph\u2019s brothers would ever have recognized their guilt or borne their iniquity apart from this <em>distress<\/em>?\u00a0 So I can accept that a part of bearing one\u2019s iniquity is accepting the punishment meted out by human authorities, pay the fine, do the time up to and including forfeiting one\u2019s freedom or life.\u00a0 Paul wrote (Romans 13:1-7 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. \u00a0For there is no authority except America from the late fifties through the early seventies, taught that government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/who-coined-government-of-the-people-by-the-people-for-the-people\/2017\/03\/31\/12fc465a-0fd5-11e7-aa57-2ca1b05c41b8_story.html?noredirect=on&amp;utm_term=.19a8be43369c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">of, by and for the people<\/a> was predicated on limiting the power of <em>authorities <\/em>over the people.\u00a0 The dictatorships of the twentieth century were considered anachronistic aberrations not counter trends to the relatively ineffective governance of a free society.\u00a0 So this <em>proclamation <\/em>sounds fascist to me, though the law\u2014<em>he shall bear his iniquity<\/em>\u2014would uphold it as I am currently understanding the law.\u00a0 What the laws do not record is what might become of the man who in good conscience could not <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/28\/ezra-and-divorce\/#_divorce\">divorce<\/a> his foreign wife, suffered the loss of his property and wandered in exile from Israel.<\/p>\n<p>The religious mind wants to believe that such a man is forever doomed.\u00a0 But the religious mind is itself barely a step removed from atheism.\u00a0 It may well call someone or something <em>god<\/em>, but believes wholeheartedly that it&#8217;s\u00a0<em>god <\/em>functions only through it&#8217;s systems of control, systems which must be maintained at all costs (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/John+11:45\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John 11:45-50<\/a>).\u00a0 It is unwilling to believe that a man wandering from <em>the faith<\/em>, so to speak, of his native religious system\u2014like Abram (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Genesis+12:1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Genesis 12:1-25:11<\/a>), Isaac (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Genesis+26:1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Genesis 26:1-27:46<\/a>) or Jacob (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Genesis+28:1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Genesis 28:1-35:29<\/a>) for example (even Hagar [<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Genesis+21:1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Genesis 21:1-21<\/a>])\u2014could possibly encounter a true and living God full of mercy and grace for those who seek Him.\u00a0 And it has no conception of what might become of a foreign-born wife impacted by his mercy and grace.<\/p>\n<p>And here my religious mind is screaming: How could anyone be expected to <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/03\/davids-forgiveness-part-3\/#_program\">figure all this out<\/a>?!\u00a0 Frankly, those who have <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Acts+2:38\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">received Jesus<\/a> are not required to understand.\u00a0 We are required (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Romans+8:12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Romans 8:12-17<\/a>) to <em>live by the Spirit and <\/em>[we]<em> will not carry out the desires of the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/15\/introduction\/\">flesh<\/a><\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/02\/08\/fear-deuteronomy-part-13\/#_ftn13\"><sup>[13]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 For <em>the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace,
