The next form of \u1f01\u03b3\u03b9\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9 I want to consider is found in Jesus\u2019 prayer to his Father: Set them apart<\/em> (\u1f01\u03b3\u03af\u03b1\u03c3\u03bf\u03bd, a form of \u1f01\u03b3\u03b9\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>) in the truth; your word is truth<\/em>.[1]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But I\u2019m making a slow pilgrimage through his prayer because I believe I can know<\/a> his holiness <\/em>here.\u00a0 Jesus prayed (John 17:7, 8 NET):<\/p>\n

<\/a>Now they understand that everything you have given me comes from you, because I have given them the words you have given me.\u00a0 They accepted them and really understand that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Greek words translated understand <\/em>were \u1f14\u03b3\u03bd\u03c9\u03ba\u03b1\u03bd and \u1f14\u03b3\u03bd\u03c9\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd respectively, forms of \u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9<\/a>.\u00a0 None of the rulers of this age understood<\/em> (\u1f14\u03b3\u03bd\u03c9\u03ba\u03b5\u03bd, another form of \u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9) [the wisdom of God<\/a><\/em>], Paul wrote believers in Corinth. \u00a0If they had known<\/em> (\u1f14\u03b3\u03bd\u03c9\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd, a form of \u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9) it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory<\/em>.[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Paul may have meant that\u2014if they had understood<\/em>\u2014the demonic rulers (\u1f00\u03c1\u03c7\u03cc\u03bd\u03c4\u03c9\u03bd, a form of \u1f04\u03c1\u03c7\u03c9\u03bd<\/a>) or their human followers<\/a> would not have crucified <\/em>Jesus so that the scriptures that say it must happen this way<\/em>[3]<\/sup><\/a> would have failed,[4]<\/sup><\/a> rather than that these rulers would have embraced Jesus as Lord (ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/a><\/em>) and Christ (m\u00e2sh\u0131\u0302yach<\/a><\/em>). \u00a0Still I think there is much to be gained by contrasting the disciples understand<\/em>ing to its negation.\u00a0 Righteous Father<\/em>, Jesus prayed, even if the world does not know<\/em> (\u1f14\u03b3\u03bd\u03c9, another form of \u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9) you, I know<\/em> (\u1f14\u03b3\u03bd\u03c9\u03bd, another form of \u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9) you, and these men know <\/em>(\u1f14\u03b3\u03bd\u03c9\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd, a form of \u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9) that you sent me<\/em>.[5]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard <\/em>[Jesus\u2019] parables, they realized <\/em>(\u1f14\u03b3\u03bd\u03c9\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd, a form of \u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9) that he was speaking about them<\/em>.[6]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But\u00a0they didn\u2019t understand that the Father had sent Jesus.\u00a0 Now they wanted to arrest him (but they feared the crowd), because they realized<\/em> (\u1f14\u03b3\u03bd\u03c9\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd, a form of \u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9) that he told this parable against them.\u00a0 So they left him and went away<\/em>.[7]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Then the experts in the law and the chief priests wanted to arrest him that very hour, because they realized<\/em> (\u1f14\u03b3\u03bd\u03c9\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd, a form of \u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9) he had told this parable against them.\u00a0 But they were afraid of the people<\/em>.[8]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

John recorded the suspicion of some of the residents of Jerusalem<\/em>, who in a sense forced their rulers\u2019 hand to prove that they did not secretly regard Jesus as the Christ: Then some of the residents of Jerusalem began to say, \u201cIsn\u2019t this the man they are trying to kill? \u00a0Yet here he is, speaking publicly, and they are saying nothing to him.\u00a0 Do the ruling authorities really know <\/em>(\u1f14\u03b3\u03bd\u03c9\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd, a form of \u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9) that this man is the Christ?<\/em>[9]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

The following table contrasts those who did not understand that the Father sent Jesus and those who did:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

(They did not understand [\u1f14\u03b3\u03bd\u03c9\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd, a form of \u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9] that he was telling them about his Father.)<\/td>\nThey will do[12]<\/sup><\/a> these things because they have not known (\u1f14\u03b3\u03bd\u03c9\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd, a form of \u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9) the Father or me.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
<\/td>\nBut I have told you these things so that when their[13]<\/sup><\/a> time comes, you will remember that I told you about them.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

<\/a>Jesus explained why his disciples\u2019 understanding differed from that of most in Israel: I have given them the words you have given me<\/em>.\u00a0 Even this may become clearer with contrast (Matthew 13:10-17 NET Table<\/a>):<\/p>\n

Then the disciples came to [Jesus]<\/em> and said,[14]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> \u201cWhy do you speak to them in parables?\u201d \u00a0He replied, \u201cYou have been given the opportunity to know (\u03b3\u03bd\u1ff6\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9, another form of \u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9)<\/em> the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but they have not. \u00a0For whoever has will be given more, and will have an abundance. \u00a0But whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him. \u00a0For this reason I speak to them in parables: Although they see they do not see, and although they hear they do not hear nor do they understand<\/a> (\u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03af\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd, a form of \u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>). \u00a0<\/em>And concerning<\/a> them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled that says:<\/p>\n

\u2018You will listen carefully yet will never understand <\/em><\/strong>(\u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u1fc6\u03c4\u03b5, another form of \u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9)<\/em>, you will look closely yet will never comprehend. \u00a0For the heart of this people has become dull; they are hard of hearing, and they have shut their eyes, so that they would not see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand <\/em><\/strong>(\u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u1ff6\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd, another form of \u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9)<\/em> with their hearts and turn, and I would heal<\/a> them.\u2019<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cBut your eyes are blessed because they see, and your ears because they hear.[15]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> \u00a0For I tell you the truth, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see but did not see[16]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Jesus\u2019 disciples were not only given <\/em>the words Jesus\u2019 Father gave to Him: They accepted them and really understand that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me<\/em>.\u00a0 The Greek word translated accepted <\/em>was \u1f14\u03bb\u03b1\u03b2\u03bf\u03bd (a form of \u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>).\u00a0 John had described Jesus as follows (John 1:10-13 NET):<\/p>\n

He was in the world, and the world was created by him, but the world did not recognize (\u1f14\u03b3\u03bd\u03c9, another form of \u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9)<\/em> him.\u00a0 He came to what was his own, but his own people did not receive (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ad\u03bb\u03b1\u03b2\u03bf\u03bd, a form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> him.\u00a0 But to all who have received (\u1f14\u03bb\u03b1\u03b2\u03bf\u03bd, a form of \u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9)<\/em> him \u2013 those who believe in his name \u2013 he has given the right to become God\u2019s children \u2013 children not born by human parents or by human desire or a husband\u2019s decision, but by God.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

John also recorded Jesus\u2019 description of his own death and resurrection (John 10:17, 18 NET):<\/p>\n

This is why the Father loves me \u2013 because I lay down my life, so that I may take (\u03bb\u03ac\u03b2\u03c9<\/a>, another form of \u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9)<\/em> it back again. \u00a0No one takes it away from me, but I lay it down of my own free will. \u00a0I have the authority to lay it down, and I have the authority to take (\u03bb\u03b1\u03b2\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9)<\/em> it back again. \u00a0This commandment I received (\u1f14\u03bb\u03b1\u03b2\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9)<\/em> from my Father.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>Though accepted <\/em>and received <\/em>may sound passive[17]<\/sup><\/a> in English, I think this translation is a matter of politeness.\u00a0 All three Greek forms of \u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9 above (\u03bb\u03ac\u03b2\u03c9, \u03bb\u03b1\u03b2\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd and \u1f14\u03bb\u03b1\u03b2\u03bf\u03bd) are active verbs: So they took<\/em> (\u1f14\u03bb\u03b1\u03b2\u03bf\u03bd, a form of \u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9) branches of palm trees<\/em>;[18]<\/sup><\/a> they took<\/em> (\u1f14\u03bb\u03b1\u03b2\u03bf\u03bd, a form of \u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9) his clothes and made four shares<\/em>[19]<\/sup><\/a> and they took<\/em> (\u1f14\u03bb\u03b1\u03b2\u03bf\u03bd, a form of \u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9) Jesus\u2019 body and wrapped it, with the aromatic spices<\/em>.[20]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Jesus\u2019 disciples took the words (\u03c1\u03ae\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1<\/a>, a form of \u1fe5\u1fc6\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>) He gave them and kept (\u03c4\u03b5\u03c4\u03ae\u03c1\u03b7\u03ba\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) them: and they have kept thy word <\/em>(\u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>).[21]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I feel justified equating the words <\/em>(\u03c1\u03ae\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1) they took with the word <\/em>(\u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd) they kept<\/a> because Jesus also prayed: I have given them your word<\/em> (\u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd, a form of \u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03c2).[22]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

I found two passive forms of \u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9 in the New Testament for contrast.\u00a0 The first is admittedly subtle (1 Timothy 4:1-5 NET):<\/p>\n

Now the Spirit explicitly says that in the later times some will desert the faith and occupy themselves with deceiving spirits and demonic teachings, influenced by the hypocrisy of liars whose consciences are seared. \u00a0They will prohibit marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received[23]<\/sup><\/a> (\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03ac\u03bb\u03b7\u03bc\u03c8\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>)<\/em> with thanksgiving by those who believe and know[24]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> the truth. \u00a0For every creation of God is good and no food [literally, <\/em>nothing]<\/em> is to be rejected if it is received (\u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u03b1\u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9)<\/em> with thanksgiving. \u00a0For it is sanctified by God\u2019s word and by prayer.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The translations of the noun \u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03ac\u03bb\u03b7\u03bc\u03c8\u03b9\u03bd to be received<\/em> and the passive verb \u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u03b1\u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03bd is received<\/em> confused me some, not that I have a better translation of \u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03ac\u03bb\u03b7\u03bc\u03c8\u03b9\u03bd to offer.\u00a0 Perhaps the passiveness with which this food is received<\/em> is clarified by Paul\u2019s teaching to believers in Corinth (1 Corinthians 10:25-29a NET).<\/p>\n

Eat anything that is sold in the marketplace without questions of conscience, for the earth and its abundance are the Lord\u2019s. \u00a0If[25]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> an unbeliever invites you to dinner and you want to go, eat whatever is served without asking questions of conscience. \u00a0But if someone says to you, \u201cThis is from a sacrifice,\u201d[26]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> do not eat, because of the one who told you and because of conscience \u2013[27]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> I do not mean yours but the other person\u2019s.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The second example is more explicit, contrasting a passive form \u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u03b1\u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2 directly with an active form \u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u03ac\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Jesus\u2019 disciples actively took the words He gave them as they were, words from the Father, and really understand<\/em>, Jesus prayed, that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me<\/em>.\u00a0 I admit I\u2019ve wasted too much time wondering what esoteric words <\/em>the Father knew and gave to Jesus and Jesus knew and gave to his disciples, blind to the fact that they are Jesus\u2019 understanding, given by the Holy Spirit, while studying the Hebrew scriptures. \u00a0These words <\/em>are what Jesus learned as He increased in<\/em>[31]<\/sup><\/a> wisdom and in stature, and in favor with God and with people<\/em>.[32]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And his understanding of these words<\/em>, are recorded in the Gospel narratives of the New Testament.<\/p>\n
