of the garden of Eden the cherubim, and the flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way to the tree of life.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>John wrote in the <em>revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must happen very soon.\u00a0 He made it clear by sending his angel to his servant John, who then testified to everything that he saw<\/em><a NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Then the angel showed me the river<em><a crystal \u2013 pouring out from the throne of God and of the Lamb, flowing down the middle of the city\u2019s main street. \u00a0On each side<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/03\/18\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-2\/#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> of the river is the tree of life producing twelve kinds of fruit, yielding<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/03\/18\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-2\/#_ftn5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> its fruit every<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/03\/18\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-2\/#_ftn6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> month of the year. \u00a0Its leaves are for the healing of the nations.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a id=\"_life\"><\/a>Placing <em>the cherubim and the flaming sword<\/em> to <em>keep <\/em>(<em>sh\u00e2mar<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_sh\u00e2mar\">\u05dc\u05e9\u05de\u05e8<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lxx\/gen\/3\/24\/t_bibles_3024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Septuagint<\/a>: \u03c6\u03c5\u03bb\u03ac\u03c3\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03c6\u03c5\u03bb\u03ac\u03c3\u03c3\u03c9\">\u03c6\u03c5\u03bb\u03ac\u03c3\u03c3\u03c9<\/a>) <em>the way to the tree of life<\/em> from Adam and Eve was never about withholding life from humanity.\u00a0 Though Adam and Eve <em>knew <\/em>(<em>y<sup>e<\/sup>da\u02bd<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_yeda\u02bd\">\u05d5\u05d9\u05d3\u05e2\u05d5<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lxx\/gen\/3\/7\/t_bibles_3007\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Septuagint<\/a>: \u1f14\u03b3\u03bd\u03c9\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9\">\u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9<\/a>) <em>that they were naked<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/03\/18\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-2\/#_ftn7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a> <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> <em>\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym <\/em>knew what it meant when <em>sin entered the world through one man<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/03\/18\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-2\/#_ftn8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <a id=\"_religious\"><\/a>Consider Jesus\u2019 teaching (John 8:31, 32 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Then Jesus said to those Judeans who had believed him, \u201cIf you continue to follow my teaching, you are really my disciples and you will know the truth, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/John+17:17\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">truth<\/a> will set you <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/John+8:34\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">free<\/a>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a id=\"_born\"><\/a>Jesus addressed <em>those Judeans<\/em> (KJV: <em>Jews<\/em>) <em>who had believed him<\/em>, arguably the best of the best.\u00a0 Though they were hardened they were among the most spiritually cultivated (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Romans+9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Romans 9-11<\/a>) people to have walked the earth to that time, and they had begun to believe Jesus, and Jesus told them <em>to continue to follow<\/em> his <em>teaching <\/em>(\u03bc\u03b5\u03af\u03bd\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5 \u1f10\u03bd \u03c4\u1ff7 \u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u1ff3 \u03c4\u1ff7 \u1f10\u03bc\u1ff7).\u00a0 Now hear with faith how He described these most spiritually cultivated people who had believed Him (John 8:44 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>You people are from your father<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/03\/18\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-2\/#_ftn9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/Blogs\/The-Jewish-Problem---From-anti-Judaism-to-anti-Semitism\/Jewish-Problem-Sources-the-gospels-You-are-of-your-father-the-devil-375836\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the devil<\/a>, and you want to do what your father desires.\u00a0 He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/03\/18\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-2\/#_ftn10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> uphold the truth, because there is no truth in him. \u00a0Whenever he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of lies.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Spiritually cultivated they were and they had begun to believe Jesus but they were not yet <em><a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/John+3:7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">born from above<\/a><\/em>, not yet <em>led by the <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/John+7:39\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Spirit of God<\/a><\/em>, not yet <em>the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicculture.org\/culture\/library\/view.cfm?recnum=7434\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sons of God<\/a><\/em>: <em>For all who are led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/03\/18\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-2\/#_ftn11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 No one born of Adam, whether confessing some sin or not, wants to hear, <em>you people are from your father the devil<\/em>, or <em>you want<\/em> (\u03b8\u03ad\u03bb\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03b8\u03ad\u03bb\u03c9\">\u03b8\u03ad\u03bb\u03c9<\/a>) <em>to do what your father desires<\/em> (\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u03af\u03b1\u03c2, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u03af\u03b1\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u03af\u03b1<\/a>).\u00a0 But I\u2019ll consider the story of <em>Abel<\/em>, <em>a keeper of sheep<\/em> and his elder brother <em>Cain<\/em>, <em>a tiller of the ground<\/em> in this light (Genesis 4:2b-5 Tanakh).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto HaShem <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/03\/davids-forgiveness-part-3\/#_Table39\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. \u00a0And HaShem had respect unto Abel and to his offering <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/03\/davids-forgiveness-part-3\/#_Table41\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>; but unto Cain and to his offering He had not respect. \u00a0And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/03\/davids-forgiveness-part-3\/#_Table43\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It seems that Cain got the bright idea to bring <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>an offering.\u00a0 His little brother Abel just tagged along.\u00a0 Each brought the fruit of his labor.\u00a0 Who does <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>think he is, discriminating this way between them?\u00a0 After all, it\u2019s the thought that counts!<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/03\/18\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-2\/#_ftn12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0That, by the way, was not my thought.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, I wrote it.\u00a0 Yes, I heard the thought in my mind.\u00a0 But by faith I no longer recognize such thoughts as <em>me <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Galatians+2:20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Galatians 2:20, 21<\/a>) or <em>mine<\/em>.\u00a0 I recognize\u2014again, by faith in the word of God\u2014that there is something in me\u2014call it what you will, sin in the flesh, the old man\u2014something that hates <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, everything He says, everything He does.\u00a0 He can do nothing right.\u00a0 Paul described this phenomenon in his letter to believers in Rome (Romans 7:21-25 NET <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/08\/26\/atonement-part-4\/#_Table7\">Table1<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/08\/26\/atonement-part-4\/#_Table6\">Table2<\/a>).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>So, I find the law that when I want to do good <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/12\/22\/my-reasons-and-my-reason-part-6\/#_beautiful\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03cc\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03cc\u03c2\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em>, evil <em>(\u03ba\u03b1\u03ba\u1f78\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03ba\u03b1\u03ba\u03cc\u03c2\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03ba\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> is present with me. \u00a0For I delight in the law of God in my inner being <em>(\u1f04\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u03c9\u03c0\u03bf\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f04\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u03c9\u03c0\u03bf\u03c2\">\u1f04\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u03c9\u03c0\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em>. \u00a0But I see a different law in my members waging war against the law of my mind and making me <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/08\/26\/atonement-part-4\/#_ftn33\">captive to<\/a> the law of sin that is in my members. \u00a0Wretched man <em>(\u1f04\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u03c9\u03c0\u03bf\u03c2)<\/em> that I am! \u00a0Who will rescue me from this body of death? \u00a0Thanks<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/03\/18\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-2\/#_ftn13\"><sup>[13]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! \u00a0So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>Then the Lord<\/em> (<em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4) <em>said to Cain, \u201cWhy are you angry, and why is your expression downcast?<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/03\/18\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-2\/#_ftn14\"><sup>[14]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0I\u2019ve approached the next verse <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/03\/davids-forgiveness-part-3\/#_crouching\">incidentally<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/06\/10\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-7\/#_transition\">tangentially<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/03\/22\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-11\/#_crouching\">judgmentally<\/a> and, curiously enough in retrospect, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/11\/22\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-3\/#_lawfully\">lawfully<\/a> in other essays.\u00a0 Here, I wanted to approach it rule<\/em>\u2014was so uncertain.\u00a0 It makes sense to me that knowing good and evil makes each of us individually <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/06\/10\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-7\/#_transition\">responsible<\/a> for choosing good, but <em>mayest rule<\/em> and especially <em>can rule<\/em> imply the <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Romans+7:18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ability<\/a> to do so as well. \u00a0Struggling with this I perused the <a href=\"https:\/\/biblehub.com\/commentaries\/genesis\/4-7.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">commentaries<\/a>.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alexander_Maclaren\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexander MacLaren<\/a> pointed out the similarity here to what <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>had <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Genesis+3:16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> to Eve after she had led Adam astray (<a the latter part of <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s <\/em>word to Eve as a rule for women to obey.\u00a0 I haven\u2019t heard the latter part of his word to Cain abstracted that way. \u00a0\u00a0The translations divide here along party lines: those who have accepted Jesus as the Christ hear <em>responsibility <\/em>(<em>must subdue<\/em>, <em>should rule<\/em>), those who <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jewfaq.org\/search.shtml?Keywords=salvation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">have not<\/a> hear a promise of <em>ability <\/em>(<em>mayest rule<\/em>, <em>can target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Charles Ellicott<\/a> offered a similar interpretation in his <a href=\"https:\/\/biblehub.com\/commentaries\/genesis\/4-7.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">commentary<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cAt present thou art vexed and envious because thy younger brother is rich and prosperous, while thy tillage yields thee but scanty returns. \u00a0Do well, and the Divine blessing will rest on thee, and thou wilt recover thy rights of primogeniture, and thy brother will look up to thee in loving obedience.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I can\u2019t assume that Abel was \u201crich and prosperous\u201d while Cain\u2019s \u201ctillage yields\u2026but scanty returns,\u201d or that <em>yeh\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>was concerned with Cain\u2019s \u201crights of primogeniture\u201d from what is written in the text.\u00a0 I\u2019ve assumed that <em>HaShem had respect unto Abel and to his offering<\/em> because <em>yeh\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>foreknew that a Passover <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Exodus+12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lamb<\/a> would become important to his people rather than a Passover kumquat.\u00a0 (No, I have no idea what kind of produce Cain offered Him.) \u00a0But if I consider now that the referent of <em>his <\/em>and <em>him <\/em>was <em>sin<\/em> rather than <em>Abel<\/em>, I get a different picture.<\/p>\n<p>The rabbis understood \u05e8\u05d1\u05e5 (<em>r\u00e2bats<\/em>) as an imperative <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/hs.html#hsucazw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f21\u03c3\u03cd\u03c7\u03b1\u03c3\u03bf\u03bd<\/a> (<em>Be still<\/em>) directed to Cain rather than as a description of sin <em>lying<\/em> or <em>crouching<\/em>. \u00a0Had Cain believed <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s<\/em> command to <em>be still<\/em>, he would have realized <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s <\/em>promise\u2014<em>you will rule<\/em> (NETS), <em>thou shalt rule<\/em> (Elpenor) over sin\u2014without equivocation.\u00a0 I called this \u201c<em>yeh\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>at his most aloof,\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/03\/18\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-2\/#_ftn19\"><sup>[19]<\/sup><\/a> relative to the time and attention He lavishes on me.\u00a0 (The philosophical bent of my mind still longs for a thousand page discourse where <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> sits down with Cain and explains his understanding of sin, righteousness and redemption.)\u00a0 <em>Be still<\/em> as <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s<\/em> command to Cain reminds me of Peter (Matthew 14:28 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Peter said to <em>[Jesus]<\/em>, \u201cLord, if it is you, order me to come to you on the water.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Here is an example of what I meant by the spiritual cultivation of Israel.\u00a0 Peter wasn\u2019t a priest, a scribe or a religious professional of any sort.\u00a0 He was a fisherman.\u00a0 But he believed that if Jesus the <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Matthew+16:16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Christ<\/a> ordered or commanded him to come to Him on the water it would be so.\u00a0 But this is probably too facile an explanation.\u00a0 Peter\u2019s lack of religious sophistication may have enhanced his spiritual cultivation.\u00a0 Of his more religiously sophisticated (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Philippians+3:5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Philippians 3:5-7<\/a>) brethren, Paul wrote (Romans 10:2, 3; 9:31, 32 NET <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/01\/13\/romans-part-91\/#_Table15\">Table<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2026I can testify that <em>[<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Romans+10:1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">my fellow Israelites<\/a><em>]<\/em> are zealous for God, but their zeal is not in line with the truth <em>(\u1f10\u03c0\u03af\u03b3\u03bd\u03c9\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f10\u03c0\u03af\u03b3\u03bd\u03c9\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03af\u03b3\u03bd\u03c9\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em>. \u00a0For ignoring the righteousness that comes from God, and seeking instead to establish their own righteousness, they did not submit to God\u2019s righteousness.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2026<\/em>Israel even though pursuing a law of righteousness did not attain it.<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/03\/18\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-2\/#_ftn20\"><sup>[20]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> \u00a0Why not?\u00a0 Because they pursued it not by faith but (as if it were possible) by works.<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/03\/18\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-2\/#_ftn21\"><sup>[21]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0<\/em> They <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/01\/13\/romans-part-91\/#_ftn45\">stumbled<\/a> over the stumbling stone\u2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>In my zeal for God<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/03\/18\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-2\/#_ftn22\"><sup>[22]<\/sup><\/a> Paul wrote of his own <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Acts+22:3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">religious sophistication<\/a>, <em>I persecuted the church<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/03\/18\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-2\/#_ftn23\"><sup>[23]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I wondered if <em>be still<\/em> here had any relationship to, <em>Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/03\/18\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-2\/#_ftn24\"><sup>[24]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But the Hebrew word translated <em>Be still<\/em> there was <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_r\u00e2ph\u00e2h\">\u05d4\u05e8\u05e4\u05d5<\/a> (<em>r\u00e2ph\u00e2h<\/em>), translated \u03c3\u03c7\u03bf\u03bb\u03ac\u03c3\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5 (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-3\/#_\u03c3\u03c7\u03bf\u03bb\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9\">\u03c3\u03c7\u03bf\u03bb\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>) in the Septuagint.\u00a0 As I contemplated the definition of \u03c3\u03c7\u03bf\u03bb\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9 in the Greek Lexicon online I was lifted out of the weeds, so to speak, fussing over the meaning of word strings in the Bible, and into that <em><a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/John+17:3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">eternal life<\/a><\/em> of knowing <em>the only true God, and Jesus Christ<\/em>. \u00a0The definition of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sc.html#scolazw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c3\u03c7\u03bf\u03bb\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a> reads:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>to devote oneself; to have leisure; to devote, have spare time, be at leisure, take a vacation; to take it easy; to have time to be busy with one&#8217;s interests apart from work; to take time to devote to study<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This accurately describes the life I\u2019ve <em>received <\/em>from Him, <em>received <\/em>in that same active sense that Jesus\u2019 disciples <em><a for, request, demand (something); to claim (as entitlement); to appeal to someone for guidance<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Back again in the weeds, the rabbis who translated the Septuagint offered no Greek counterpart for \u05dc\u05e4\u05ea\u05d7 (<em>pethach<\/em>; translated <em>at the door<\/em>, <em>at the entrance <\/em>[Tanakh]<em>, at the door <\/em>[NET]).\u00a0 Why would they ignore \u05dc\u05e4\u05ea\u05d7 (<em>pethach<\/em>) before Jesus was revealed to Israel?\u00a0 Why would Masoretes add it afterward?\u00a0 Frankly, I can\u2019t imagine any plausible scenarios at the moment.\u00a0 So as far as understanding what <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>said to Cain, I\u2019m more uncertain now than when I began this study. \u00a0I have, however, encountered many provocative ideas ripe for further study.\u00a0 And <em>what <\/em>He said hardly mattered to the narrative.\u00a0 Cain ignored it (Genesis 4:8 Tanakh).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>And Cain spoke unto Abel his brother. \u00a0And it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.<em><a <\/em>[his] <em>father the devil<\/em>, and wanted <em>to do what<\/em> [his] <em>father desires<\/em>.\u00a0 As <em>Jesus said to those Judeans who had believed him<\/em>\u2026[the devil] <em>was a murderer from the beginning, and does not uphold the truth <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f00\u03bb\u03ae\u03b8\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1\">\u1f00\u03bb\u03b7\u03b8\u03b5\u03af\u1fb3<\/a>)<em>, because there spirit.\u00a0 Do not be amazed that I said to you,<\/em> <em>\u2018You must all be born from <a Jesus for a place in heaven I comforted myself and fell asleep many nights planning the perfect murders of my neighbor and his entire family.\u00a0 My plan was never quite perfect.\u00a0 I feared I would be caught.\u00a0 Then people would misunderstand and call me names like \u201cmurderer\u201d when I was the hapless victim balancing the scales of justice.\u00a0 So I never murdered my neighbor or his entire family.<\/p>\n<p>My fear\u2014that I would be caught and my motives would be misunderstood\u2014was not <em>the righteousness of God<\/em>\u2026<em>revealed in the gospel<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/03\/18\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-2\/#_ftn30\"><sup>[30]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It was not the love that <em>does no wrong to a neighbor<\/em>, not the love that <em>is the fulfillment of the law<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/03\/18\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-2\/#_ftn31\"><sup>[31]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0It was not the love that is the fruit of his Spirit (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Galatians+5:22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Galatians 5:22, 23<\/a>).\u00a0 Not murdering my neighbor and his entire family was indisputably better than murdering them would have been.\u00a0 And clearly, it was possible for me to avoid committing murder apart from the righteousness of God.\u00a0 But imagine standing face to face with Jesus and offering Him the fact that I did not murder my neighbor and his entire family as a righteousness of my own <em><a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Philippians+3:9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">derived from the law<\/a><\/em> after having rejected the gift He offered, the gift of God Himself (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Acts+2:36\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Acts 2:36-41<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>It is inevitable, I suppose, that a reader wonders what my neighbor did to me: It was nothing in particular.\u00a0 He was a year younger than I and didn\u2019t treat me with the deference I felt I deserved.\u00a0 And he got away with it.\u00a0 My god failed to punish him for his sin.\u00a0 This was not a singularly low point in my childhood, certainly not a turning point.\u00a0 My darkness deepened into my teens until <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Psalms+14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">atheism<\/a> became my only \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/23\/who-am-i-part-3\/#_rational\">rational<\/a>\u201d choice.<\/p>\n<p>This kind of self-awareness might crush the spirit in any other form of life.\u00a0 In this <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/John+4:14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">eternal life<\/a> of <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s <\/em>Holy Spirit it encouraged me to stay the course when I had begun to waver.\u00a0 <a id=\"_justice\"><\/a>I had begun to judge some as undeserving of \u201cmy persistent prayer for <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/29\/justice-and-mercy\/\">justice<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0 At least I had confessed in prayer that I was embarrassed to bring them before the Lord again.\u00a0 But now in the light of his <em><a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/1+Timothy+1:16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">utmost patience<\/a> <\/em>and mercy toward the boy who consoled himself with murder, I pray with renewed vigor:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a id=\"_love\"><\/a><em>My persistent prayer for justice (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Luke+18:1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Luke 18:1-8<\/a>) is for the mercy on which everything depends, for <\/em>it does not depend on <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Philippians+2:13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">human<\/a> desire or exertion, but on <em>[You] <\/em>who shows <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/22\/religious-and-righteous-prayer\/#sdfootnote13sym\">mercy<\/a>.<em><a
