O Lord, hear my prayer!<\/em> David wrote.\u00a0 Pay attention to my plea for help!\u00a0 Because of your faithfulness and justice<\/em> (Septuagint<\/a>: \u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c3\u03cd\u03bd\u03b7<\/a>), answer me! \u00a0Do not sit in judgment <\/em>(Septuagint<\/a>: \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) on your servant, for no one alive is innocent <\/em>(Septuagint<\/a>: \u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03c9\u03b8\u03ae\u03c3\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>) before you<\/em> [Table<\/a>].1<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 David\u2019s prayer is a good starting place for this part of Romans.<\/p>\n

Now we know that whatever the law says<\/em>, Paul continued, it says to those who are under<\/em> the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world may be held accountable to God<\/em>.2<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

I planned to hurry to the next verse, assuming that I knew what this one was saying.\u00a0 I thought under the law<\/em> would be \u03c5\u03c0\u03bf<\/a> \u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bd<\/a> in Greek.\u00a0 When I decided not to be so lazy and checked, I discovered I was wrong.\u00a0 It is \u03b5\u03bd<\/a> \u03c4\u03c9<\/a> \u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03c9<\/a>, in the law<\/em>.\u00a0 It may not be a major difference.\u00a0 But it is more like \u03b5\u03bd \u03c1\u03c9\u03bc\u03b7<\/a>, in Rome<\/em>,3<\/sup><\/a> \u03b5\u03bd \u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u03c9<\/a>, in the gospel<\/em> (literally, in it<\/em>),4<\/sup><\/a> \u03b5\u03bd \u03c3\u03b1\u03c1\u03ba\u03b9<\/a>, in the flesh<\/em>,5<\/sup><\/a> \u03b5\u03bd \u03c4\u03c9 \u03bd\u03c5\u03bd<\/a> \u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03c1\u03c9<\/a>, in the present time<\/em>,6<\/sup><\/a> \u03b5\u03bd \u03b7<\/a> \u03b5\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03ba\u03b1\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, in which we stand<\/em>,7<\/sup><\/a> \u03b5\u03bd \u03c7\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03c9<\/a> \u03b9\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>, in Christ Jesus<\/em>,8<\/sup><\/a> \u03b5\u03bd \u03c0\u03bd\u03b5\u03c5\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9<\/a> \u03b1\u03b3\u03b9\u03c9<\/a>, in the Holy Spirit<\/em>,9<\/sup><\/a> \u03b5\u03bd \u03b4\u03c5\u03bd\u03b1\u03bc\u03b5\u03b9<\/a> \u03c0\u03bd\u03b5\u03c5\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, in the power of the Spirit<\/em>,10<\/sup><\/a> rather than \u03c5\u03c0\u03bf \u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bd, under law<\/em>.11<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Likewise I assumed that being held accountable<\/em> had something to do with \u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, an account<\/em>,12<\/sup><\/a> to explain<\/em>,13<\/sup><\/a> but I was wrong again.\u00a0 The word translated held accountable<\/em> is \u03c5\u03c0\u03bf\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, a compound word made up of \u1f51\u03c0\u03cc<\/a> (under<\/em>) and \u03b4\u03af\u03ba\u03b7<\/a>.\u00a0 This compound word only occurs once in the New Testament.\u00a0 But in Acts \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b7\u03bd<\/a> (a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03b4\u03af\u03ba\u03b7<\/a>) is a sentence of condemnation<\/em>,14<\/sup><\/a> and \u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b7 is translated as the pagan deity Justice<\/em> (NET) or vengeance<\/em> (KJV).15<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Paul wrote the Thessalonians, With flaming fire he will mete out punishment <\/em>(\u03b5\u03ba\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b7\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03ba\u03b4\u03af\u03ba\u03b7\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) on those who do not know God<\/em> and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus <\/em>[See Addendum<\/a> below].16<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0They will undergo<\/em> (\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b7\u03bd) the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his strength <\/em>[See Addendum<\/a> below]\u202617<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Jude wrote, You also know that the angels who did not keep within their proper domain but abandoned their own place of residence, he has kept in eternal chains in utter darkness, locked up for the judgment of the great Day. \u00a0So also Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighboring towns, since they indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire in a way similar to these angels, are now displayed as an example by suffering the punishment<\/em> (\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b7\u03bd) of eternal fire<\/em>.18<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

In that light it seems to me that the translation held accountable<\/em> for \u03c5\u03c0\u03bf\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf\u03c2 (under<\/em> \u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b7\u03bd) might understate the case a bit.\u00a0 <\/a>Since I brought up Jude and Sodom, it seems only fair to bring up Ezekiel.\u00a0 In the end I am not trying merely to learn the meaning of Greek words, but to know God (Ezekiel 16:44-48 NET).<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Observe \u2013 everyone who quotes proverbs will quote this proverb about you: \u201cLike mother, like daughter.\u201d \u00a0You are the daughter of your mother, who detested her husband and her sons, and you are the sister of your sisters who detested their husbands and their sons.\u00a0 Your mother was a Hittite and your father an Amorite. \u00a0Your older sister was Samaria, who lived north of you with her daughters, and your younger sister, who lived south of you, was Sodom with her daughters. \u00a0Have you not copied their behavior and practiced their abominable deeds?\u00a0 In a short time you became even more depraved in all your conduct than they were! \u00a0As surely as I live, declares the sovereign Lord, your sister Sodom and her daughters never behaved as wickedly as you and your daughters have behaved.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This was addressed to the people of Judah, the southern kingdom of Israel that remained loyal to Solomon\u2019s<\/a> son Rehoboam.\u00a0 One might miss in Jude\u2019s emphasis on Sodom and Gomorrah that there was a time when God considered Judah more depraved<\/em> than Sodom (Ezekiel 16:49-52 NET).<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018See here \u2013 this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters had majesty, abundance of food, and enjoyed carefree ease, but they did not help the poor and needy. \u00a0They were haughty and practiced abominable deeds before me.\u00a0 Therefore when I saw it I removed them. \u00a0Samaria has not committed half the sins you have; you have done more abominable deeds than they did.\u00a0 You have made your sisters appear righteous (Hebrew: \u05d5\u05b7\u05ea\u05bc\u05b0\u05e6\u05b7\u05d3\u05bc\u05b0\u05e7\u05b4\u05d9\u0599<\/a>; Septuagint: \u1f10\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u1f77\u03c9\u03c3\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>with all the abominable things you have done. \u00a0So now, bear your disgrace, because you have given your sisters reason to justify their behavior.\u00a0 Because the sins you have committed were more abominable than those of your sisters; they have become more righteous (Hebrew: \u05ea\u05bc\u05b4\u05e6\u05b0\u05d3\u05bc\u05b7\u05a3\u05e7\u05b0\u05e0\u05b8\u05d4<\/a>; Septuagint: \u1f10\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u1f77\u03c9\u03c3\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> than you. Again, Jude mentioned Sodom\u2019s abominable deeds but not that there was a time when God said that Judah had done more abominable deeds<\/em> than Sodom or Samaria, the northern kingdom of Israel that rebelled against Rehoboam.\u00a0 And Jude did not mention God\u2019s promised restoration (Ezekiel 16:53-58 NET).<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018I will restore their fortunes, the fortunes of Sodom and her daughters, and the fortunes of Samaria and her daughters (along with your fortunes among them) [See Table<\/a> below]<\/em>, so that you may bear your disgrace and be ashamed of all you have done in consoling them. \u00a0As for your sisters, Sodom and her daughters will be restored to their former status, Samaria and her daughters will be restored to their former status, and you and your daughters will be restored to your former status. \u00a0In your days of majesty, was not Sodom your sister a byword in your mouth [See Table<\/a> below]<\/em>, before your evil was exposed?\u00a0 Now you have become an object of scorn to the daughters of Aram and all those around her and to the daughters of the Philistines \u2013 those all around you who despise you. \u00a0You must bear your punishment for your obscene conduct and your abominable practices, declares the Lord.\u2019\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

For no one is declared righteous <\/em>(\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03c9\u03b8\u1f75\u03c3\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9, a form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03cc\u03c9) before him<\/em> by the works of the law<\/em>, Paul continued, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin. \u00a0But now apart from the law the righteousness of God (which is attested by the law and the prophets) has been disclosed \u2013 namely, the righteousness of God through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ for all<\/a> who believe<\/em> [Table<\/a>].19<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n
