{"id":1211,"date":"2012-08-31T21:07:56","date_gmt":"2012-08-31T15:07:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/?p=1211"},"modified":"2023-12-16T18:40:13","modified_gmt":"2023-12-17T00:40:13","slug":"davids-forgiveness-part-10","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/religiousmind.net\/?p=1211","title":{"rendered":"David&#8217;s Forgiveness, Part 10"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>David\u2019s friend <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/28\/davids-forgiveness-part-9\/\">Hushai<\/a> arrived in the city, just as Absalom was entering Jerusalem<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/31\/davids-forgiveness-part-10\/#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Absalom was suspicious of Hushai at first, <em>Do you call this loyalty <\/em>[See <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/31\/davids-forgiveness-part-10\/#_Addenduma\">Addendum<\/a> below] <em>to your friend?\u00a0 Why didn\u2019t you go with your friend?<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/31\/davids-forgiveness-part-10\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Hushai lied or told such a cleverly concealed truth that Absalom failed to unravel the riddle. \u00a0<em>No, I will be loyal to the one whom the Lord, these people, and all the men of Israel have chosen. Moreover, whom should I serve? \u00a0Should it not be his son? \u00a0Just as I served your father, so I will serve you<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/31\/davids-forgiveness-part-10\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And so Hushai was established as both a spy and false counselor.<\/p>\n<p>Absalom turned to Ahithophel for advice, <em>What should we do?<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/31\/davids-forgiveness-part-10\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a> <em>In those days Ahithophel\u2019s advice was considered as valuable as a prophetic revelation.\u00a0 Both David and Absalom highly regarded the advice of Ahithophel<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/31\/davids-forgiveness-part-10\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But when he learned that his trusted adviser had defected to Absalom, David had prayed, <em>Make the advice of Ahithophel foolish <\/em>(<em>s\u00e2kal<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lang\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?t=kjv&amp;strongs=h5528\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u05e1\u05b7\u05db\u05bc\u05b6\u05dc<\/a>)<em>, O Lord!<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/31\/davids-forgiveness-part-10\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Samuel defined the word <em>foolish <\/em>for Saul: <em>Then Samuel said to Saul, \u201cYou have made a foolish <\/em>(<em>s\u00e2kal<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h5528\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u05e0\u05b4\u05e1\u05b0\u05db\u05bc\u05b8\u0591\u05dc\u05b0\u05ea\u05bc\u05b8<\/a>) <em>choice! You have not obeyed the commandment that the Lord your God gave you. Had you done that, the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever!\u201d<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/31\/davids-forgiveness-part-10\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Ahithophel replied to Absalom, \u201cHave sex with your father\u2019s concubines whom he left to care for the palace.\u00a0 All Israel will hear that you have made yourself repulsive to your father.\u00a0 Then your followers will be motivated to support you.\u201d<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/31\/davids-forgiveness-part-10\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0I turned to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org\/jsource\/judaica\/ejud_0002_0005_0_04557.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jewish Virtual Library<\/a> online to see if I could gain some insight how David might have felt about these women.\u00a0 I still don\u2019t know if they were mistresses or chambermaids he bed a time or two.\u00a0 But I did find out something about Ahithophel\u2019s advice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo lie with a monarch&#8217;s concubine was tantamount to usurpation of the throne (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/2+Samuel+3:7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">II\u00a0Sam. 3:7<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/2+Samuel+16:21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">16:21\u201322<\/a>). For this reason Abner took Rizpah (II\u00a0Sam. 3:7). The same concept stands behind Ahitophel&#8217;s\u00a0advice to Absalom, to \u2018go into his father&#8217;s concubines\u2019 (16:21)\u2026\u201d<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/31\/davids-forgiveness-part-10\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 So Ahithophel\u2019s advice may or may not have been advantageous on the horizontal plane.\u00a0 Personally, I think it is sort of an open question how Absalom\u2019s followers might have responded.\u00a0 On the vertical plane, however, Ahithophel advised a usurper of the throne, one not anointed nor chosen by God, to do a foolish thing and disobey one of his commandments<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/31\/davids-forgiveness-part-10\/#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a> publicly as his first royal act.<\/p>\n<p><em>So they pitched a tent for Absalom on the roof, and Absalom had sex with his father\u2019s concubines in the sight of all Israel<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/31\/davids-forgiveness-part-10\/#sdfootnote11sym\" name=\"sdfootnote11anc\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The Jewish Virtual Library <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org\/jsource\/judaica\/ejud_0002_0005_0_04557.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">article<\/a> I quoted disagrees that this was a violation of God\u2019s law regarding a father\u2019s wife (a capital offence, by the way).\u00a0 \u201cNor does living with a man as his concubine create a kinship as an impediment to marriage between herself and any of the man&#8217;s relatives, or between the man and her relatives, as would be the case if she would be considered to be his wife (Rosh, Resp. no. 32:1;\u00a0<em>O\u1e93ar ha-Posekim<\/em>,\u00a0EH26, n. 3).\u201d<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/31\/davids-forgiveness-part-10\/#sdfootnote12sym\" name=\"sdfootnote12anc\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The problem I see with this analysis is that there is no legislation concerning concubines in the Bible.\u00a0 The only way to know what a concubine was and what rights or obligations she had was from foreign law.\u00a0 Both the Assyrian Code and the Code of Hammurapi are referenced as sources for determining the legal status of a concubine in the above mentioned article.<\/p>\n<p>God prophesied to David [See <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/31\/davids-forgiveness-part-10\/#_Addendumb\">Addendum<\/a> below], <em>I will take your wives<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lxx\/2sa\/12\/11\/t_bibles_279011\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Septuagint<\/a>:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/gu.html#gunaikas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b3\u03c5\u03bd\u03b1\u1fd6\u03ba\u03ac\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/gu.html#gunh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b3\u03c5\u03bd\u03ae<\/a>) <em>and hand them over to your companion.\u00a0 He will have sexual relations with your wives<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lxx\/2sa\/12\/11\/t_bibles_279011\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Septuagint<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/gu.html#gunaikwn2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b3\u03c5\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9\u03ba\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/gu.html#gunh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b3\u03c5\u03bd\u03ae<\/a>) <em>in broad daylight!\u00a0 Although you have acted in secret, I will do this thing before all Israel, and in broad daylight<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/31\/davids-forgiveness-part-10\/#sdfootnote13sym\" name=\"sdfootnote13anc\"><sup>13<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0I am using the Greek here simply because I recognize the Greek alphabet better than the Hebrew.\u00a0 (In other words, I don\u2019t know Greek a whole lot less than I don\u2019t know Hebrew.)\u00a0 Both \u03b3\u03c5\u03bd\u03b1\u1fd6\u03ba\u03ac\u03c2 and \u03b3\u03c5\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9\u03ba\u1ff6\u03bd are plural forms of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/gu.html#gunh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b3\u03c5\u03bd\u03ae<\/a>.\u00a0 Both instances are the same Hebrew word, too, according to the concordance.\u00a0 Both words can be translated <em>wives<\/em> or <em>women<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In Ephesians 5:28 (NET) \u03b3\u03c5\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03c2 was translated <em>wives<\/em>, <em>In the same way husbands ought<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/31\/davids-forgiveness-part-10\/#sdfootnote14sym\" name=\"sdfootnote14anc\"><sup>14<\/sup><\/a> <em>to love their wives<\/em> (\u03b3\u03c5\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03c2) <em>as their own bodies<\/em>.\u00a0 In Matthew 14:21 (NET) \u03b3\u03c5\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9\u03ba\u03c9\u03bd was translated <em>women<\/em>, <em>Not counting women <\/em>(\u03b3\u03c5\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9\u03ba\u03c9\u03bd) <em>and children, there were about five thousand men who ate<\/em>.\u00a0 I won\u2019t make an issue of whether 2 Samuel 12:11 should have been translated <em>wives<\/em> or <em>women<\/em>, because \u03b3\u03c5\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9\u03ba\u1f78\u03c2 in Leviticus 18:8 (NET) [See <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/31\/davids-forgiveness-part-10\/#_Addendumc\">Addendum<\/a> below] was translated <em>wife<\/em>, <em>You must not have sexual intercourse with your father\u2019s wife<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lxx\/lev\/18\/8\/t_bibles_108008\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Septuagint<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/gu.html#gunaikos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b3\u03c5\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9\u03ba\u1f78\u03c2<\/a>); <em>she is your father\u2019s nakedness<\/em>, and in Leviticus 20:11 (NET) [See <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/31\/davids-forgiveness-part-10\/#_Addendumd\">Addendum<\/a> below], <em>If a man has sexual intercourse with his father\u2019s wife<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lxx\/lev\/20\/11\/t_bibles_110011\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Septuagint<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/gu.html#gunaikos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b3\u03c5\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9\u03ba\u1f78\u03c2<\/a>), <em>he has exposed his father\u2019s nakedness.\u00a0 Both of them must be put to death; their blood guilt is on themselves<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Again, <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/gu.html#gunaikos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b3\u03c5\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9\u03ba\u1f78\u03c2<\/a> is a singular form of <em>gun\u0113<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/gu.html#gunh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b3\u03c5\u03bd\u03ae<\/a>), and the Hebrew word is also the same according to the concordance.\u00a0 In Matthew 19:10 (NET) [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/18\/immorality\/#_Table8\">Table<\/a>] \u03b3\u03c5\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf\u03c2 was translated <em>wife<\/em>, <em>The<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/31\/davids-forgiveness-part-10\/#sdfootnote15sym\" name=\"sdfootnote15anc\"><sup>15<\/sup><\/a> <em>disciples said to him, \u201cIf this is the case of a husband with a wife<\/em> (\u03b3\u03c5\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf\u03c2), <em>it is better not to marry!\u201d<\/em>\u00a0 In John 4:9 (NET) \u03b3\u03c5\u03bd\u03b7 and \u03b3\u03c5\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf\u03c2 were both translated <em>woman<\/em>, <em>So the Samaritan<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/31\/davids-forgiveness-part-10\/#sdfootnote16sym\" name=\"sdfootnote16anc\"><sup>16<\/sup><\/a> <em>woman<\/em> <\/em>(\u03b3\u03c5\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf\u03c2), <em>for water to drink?\u201d<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/31\/davids-forgiveness-part-10\/#sdfootnote18sym\" name=\"sdfootnote18anc\"><sup>18<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So whether 2 Samuel 12:11 should have been translated David\u2019s <em>wives<\/em> or <em>women<\/em> is immaterial, since the same word, both in Greek and Hebrew, was used in Leviticus 18:8 and 20:11.\u00a0 Since God was apparently satisfied when Absalom had sex with David\u2019s <em>concubines<\/em> that Nathan\u2019s prophesy about David\u2019s <em>wives<\/em> or <em>women<\/em> was fulfilled, and since the only other way to distinguish David\u2019s <em>concubines<\/em> from his <em>wives<\/em> or his <em>women<\/em> was by foreign law, I am going to assume that the category called <em>concubine<\/em> referred to a traditional practice that probably should not have been part of the thought of the kingdom of Israel.<\/p>\n<p>That being said, however, it seems very likely that what God called Saul\u2019s <em>wives<\/em> through Nathan the prophet were perceived by many in Israel as the concubines of David\u2019s father-in-law:<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/31\/davids-forgiveness-part-10\/#sdfootnote19sym\" name=\"sdfootnote19anc\"><sup>19<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>I gave you your master\u2019s house, and put your master\u2019s wives <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lxx\/2sa\/12\/8\/t_bibles_279008\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Septuagint<\/a>: \u03b3\u03c5\u03bd\u03b1\u1fd6\u03ba\u03ac\u03c2) <em>into your arms<\/em>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/31\/davids-forgiveness-part-10\/#sdfootnote20sym\" name=\"sdfootnote20anc\"><sup>20<\/sup><\/a> when Nathan confronted David on God\u2019s behalf.\u00a0 It puts some perspective on Absalom\u2019s willingness to fall in with Ahithophel\u2019s advice.\u00a0 He wanted his father\u2019s concubines just like his father got his father-in-law\u2019s concubines when David received the kingdom after Saul\u2019s death.\u00a0 It makes me wonder what Absalom <em>heard<\/em> of his father\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p>I assume Absalom was <em>told<\/em> all the stories about David.\u00a0 But what he <em>heard<\/em> seems to have been something less than the sum total of what he was <em>told<\/em>.\u00a0 He did not <em>hear<\/em> for instance that David was chosen (anointed) by God when Saul was rejected for his disobedience to God.\u00a0 Oh, perhaps he <em>heard<\/em> it in part.\u00a0 Maybe he assumed that David was, or should have been, rejected by God when he took Bathsheba and murdered Uriah, or if not then, perhaps when he failed to avenge Tamar, as Absalom himself had done.\u00a0 He certainly <em>heard<\/em> that Samuel used sacrifices to God as the cover to anoint David as king while Saul yet lived.\u00a0 He imitated that scene faithfully, minus of course the sanction of God or the presence of his prophet.\u00a0 He did not <em>hear<\/em> how his father David respected the Lord\u2019s chosen or anointed one even after he was rejected by God, or he would have behaved differently toward his father.\u00a0 In fact, if he had any faith whatsoever in God or his choice, Absalom would not have challenged David at all.<\/p>\n<p>The irony here was, though he was born a son of David, though he did everything he could to imitate David\u2019s career outwardly, Absalom proved to be a man after Saul\u2019s own heart:\u00a0 <em>So Saul feared David, because the Lord was with him but had departed from Saul<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/31\/davids-forgiveness-part-10\/#sdfootnote21sym\" name=\"sdfootnote21anc\"><sup>21<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And Absalom, like Saul before him, set himself to the task of finding a way to kill David.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a
