\u201cOne more thing you should know about me,\u201d I wrote in another essay<\/a>: \u201cI usually appreciate God\u2019s deceptiveness <\/em>(the NIV<\/a> translates it shrewdness<\/em>, if you prefer) first, before I recognize his reliability, trustworthiness and loyalty.\u00a0 So I assume that I am far more perverse <\/em>(NIV, crooked <\/em>[now, devious<\/em>]), than I am blameless<\/em>, innocent <\/em>or faithful<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 As I revisited this essay to make tables for 2 Samuel 22:26, 27 it occurred to me that this is no longer true.<\/p>\n

In the Tanakh (and KJV) \u05d7\u05e1\u05d9\u05d3<\/a> (ch\u00e2s\u0131\u0302yd<\/em>) was translated merciful <\/em>(Table1<\/a>) rather than loyal<\/em>.\u00a0 Daily infusions of God\u2019s own love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness<\/a>, and self-control<\/em>[1]<\/sup><\/a> have rendered me more merciful<\/a> <\/em> than perverse<\/em>.\u00a0 Consequently, I view God as more merciful <\/em>than deceptive <\/em>these days.\u00a0 Paul described a similar transformation in his own life for believers in Galatia (Galatians 2:20 NET):<\/p>\n

I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.\u00a0 So the life I now live in the body, I live because of the faithfulness of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

He prayed the same transformation for believers in Ephesus (Ephesians 3:16, 17a NET):<\/p>\n

I pray that according to the wealth[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> of his glory [<\/em>the Father<\/a>,[3]<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named] <\/em>will grant[4]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inner person, that Christ will dwell in your hearts through faith…<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I noticed something comparing the English translations of 2 Samuel (Reigns, Kings) 2:26, 27 from the Septuagint (Table2<\/a> and Table3<\/a>) to those of the Masoretic text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

The English translations from the Masoretic text seem to imply that God changes his behavior toward me depending upon my response to Him.\u00a0 If I achieve the rank of crooked <\/em>(Tanakh) or perverse <\/em>(NET), God dost show<\/em> Himself subtle <\/em>(Tanakh) or prove to be deceptive<\/em> (NET).\u00a0 If I strive to be pure <\/em>(Tanakh) or blameless <\/em>(NET), He dost show myself<\/em> (KJV<\/a>: thyself<\/em>) pure <\/em>or prove to be reliable<\/em>.\u00a0 If I make myself upright <\/em>or innocent<\/em>, He dost show<\/em> Himself upright <\/em>or prove to be trustworthy<\/em>.\u00a0 If I become merciful<\/em> or faithful<\/em>, He dost show<\/em> Himself merciful <\/em>or prove to be loyal<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The translations from the Greek Septuagint (especially the NETS, \u201cyou will be deemed\u2026\u201d), however, called this into question and forced me to dig deeper.\u00a0 With the exception of the adjective \u1f10\u03ba\u03bb\u03b5\u03ba\u03c4\u1f78\u03c2<\/a>, the verbs\u2014\u1f41\u03c3\u03b9\u03c9\u03b8\u1f75\u03c3\u1fc3<\/a>, \u03c4\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9\u03c9\u03b8\u1f75\u03c3\u1fc3<\/a>[5]<\/sup><\/a> and \u03c3\u03c4\u03c1\u03b5\u03b2\u03bb\u03c9\u03b8\u1f75\u03c3\u1fc3<\/a>\u2014applied to God by the rabbis who translated the Septuagint were all passive.\u00a0 In other words, my perception\u2014not God\u2014changes as He has his way with me. \u00a0There is a caveat.<\/p>\n

In a similar verse (Table3<\/a> below) Psalm 18:26 (18:27, 17:27) the rabbis chose the active \u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03c3\u03c4\u03c1\u1f73\u03c8\u03b5\u03b9\u03c2<\/a> for \u05ea\u05ea\u05e4\u05ea\u05dc<\/a> (p\u00e2thal<\/em>) rather than the passive \u03c3\u03c4\u03c1\u03b5\u03b2\u03bb\u03c9\u03b8\u1f75\u03c3\u1fc3 (the Hebrew word \u05ea\u05ea\u05e4\u05dc [p\u00e2thal<\/em>] was slightly different).\u00a0 Here are the words in tabular form:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

In other words, with the froward <\/em>(Tanakh), perverse <\/em>(NET\/English Elpenor) or \u201ccrooked\u201d (NETS) God is more actively froward <\/em>(Tanakh) or deceptive <\/em>(NET), wilt shew frowardness<\/em> (English Elpenor) or \u201cwill pervert\u201d (1 Kings 22:19-23<\/a>; 1 Timothy 4:1-5<\/a>).\u00a0 His mercy toward me is ever astonishing<\/a>.\u00a0 At my most crooked <\/em>or perverse <\/em>I mistook God\u2019s mercy for his nonexistence<\/a>.\u00a0 He remained pure, reliable, upright, trustworthy, merciful and loyal despite my religious mind\u2019s inability to perceive it at that time.<\/p>\n

Before I get too carried away with the English translation merciful<\/em>, however, I want to study the Greek translation some.\u00a0 The Hebrew word \u05d7\u05e1\u05d9\u05d3 (ch\u00e2s\u0131\u0302yd<\/em>) translated merciful <\/em>in the Tanakh and KJV was translated \u1f41\u03c3\u1f77\u03bf\u03c5<\/a> (a form of \u1f45\u03c3\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) in the Septuagint rather than \u1f10\u03bb\u03b5\u03ae\u03bc\u03c9\u03bd<\/a> (Hebrews 2:17 NET):<\/p>\n

Therefore [Jesus<\/a>]<\/em> had to be made like his brothers and sisters in every respect, so that he could become a merciful (\u1f10\u03bb\u03b5\u03ae\u03bc\u03c9\u03bd<\/a>)<\/em> and faithful high priest in things relating to God, to make atonement for the sins of the people.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Peter quoted David\u2019s psalm about Jesus<\/a>, you will not leave my soul in Hades<\/a>, nor permit your Holy One to experience decay<\/em>.[6]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Paul quoted part of the same psalm: You will not permit your Holy One to experience decay<\/em>.[7]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Here in both quotes \u1f45\u03c3\u03b9\u03bf\u03bd<\/a> (another form of \u1f45\u03c3\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2) was translated Holy One<\/em>.<\/p>\n

<\/a>The Greek word \u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03c6\u03b8\u03bf\u03c1\u1f71\u03bd<\/a> translated decay <\/em>above was itself a translation of the Hebrew word \u05e9\u05d7\u05ea. \u00a0But it was translated (Table4<\/a> below) corruption <\/em>(Tanakh) or the Pit<\/em> (NET).\u00a0 A table contrasting these Hebrew homographs<\/a> follows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

The only difference between them is the vowel points<\/a>.\u00a0 Whether Peter and Paul misquoted the psalm to make it prophesy Jesus\u2019 resurrection<\/a>, or the Masoretes<\/a> manipulated the vowel points to make it less obvious so as to defend their people from Christian interpretation will remain a matter of faith.\u00a0 Admittedly, the rabbis who translated the Septuagint chose \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03c3\u03c4\u03c1\u1f73\u03c8\u03b1\u03b9<\/a> for \u05e9\u05d7\u05ea in Genesis 13:10 rather than \u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03c6\u03b8\u03bf\u03c1\u1f71\u03bd.\u00a0 But they didn\u2019t choose any form of \u0392\u03cc\u03b8\u03c5\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> (Matthew 12:11<\/a>) or \u03c6\u03c1\u03ad\u03b1\u03c1<\/a> (Revelation 9:1<\/a>) for either occurrence.<\/p>\n

Moses identified Levi\u2019s holy one, whom Thou didst prove at Massah, with whom Thou didst strive at the waters of Meribah<\/em>.[8]<\/sup><\/a> Again, the Hebrew word translated holy <\/em>was \u05d7\u05e1\u05d9\u05d3\u05da (ch\u00e2s\u0131\u0302yd<\/em>) which was translated \u1f41\u03c3\u1f77\u1ff3<\/a> (another form of \u1f45\u03c3\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2) in the Septuagint.\u00a0 To Paul Levi\u2019s holy one<\/em> (\u03c4\u1ff7 \u1f00\u03bd\u03b4\u03c1\u1f76 \u03c4\u1ff7 \u1f41\u03c3\u1f77\u1ff3 in the Septuagint<\/a>; literally, holy man<\/em>) was Christ<\/a> <\/em> (1 Corinthians 10:1-4 NET Table<\/a>):<\/p>\n

A plural form of \u1f45\u03c3\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2 (Table19<\/a> below) was translated holy <\/em>(NET) or mercies <\/em>(KJV) in Paul\u2019s exhortation in the synagogue at Pisidian Antioch<\/a> (Acts 13:34 NET):<\/p>\n

But regarding the fact that he has raised Jesus from the dead, never again to be in a state of decay, God has spoken in this way: \u2018I will give you the holy<\/em><\/strong> (\u1f45\u03c3\u03b9\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em> and trustworthy promises made to David<\/em><\/strong>.\u2019[9]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The last was a quote from the prophet Isaiah (Table8<\/a> below): I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David<\/em>.[10]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The Hebrew word \u05d7\u05b7\u05e1\u05b0\u05d3\u05b5\u05a5\u05d9<\/a> (ch\u00eas\u00ead<\/em>) was translated mercies <\/em>on chabad.org<\/a> as well.\u00a0 The Greek translation \u1f45\u03c3\u03b9\u03b1 was also rendered mercies <\/em>in the Elpenor English translation of the Septuagint, but sacred things<\/em> in the NETS (Table9<\/a> below).<\/p>\n

Who will not fear you,<\/em>[11]<\/sup><\/a> O Lord, and glorify<\/em>[12]<\/sup><\/a> your name, because you alone are holy<\/em>[13]<\/sup><\/a> (\u1f45\u03c3\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2), those who conquered the beast sang.\u00a0 All nations will come and worship before you for your righteous acts <\/em>(seven final plagues<\/a><\/em>, seven angels holding the seven trumpets<\/a><\/em>, the scroll and its seven seals<\/a><\/em>) have been revealed<\/em>.[14]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 John\u2019s vision continued: Now I heard the angel of the waters saying: \u201cYou are just<\/em>[15]<\/sup><\/a> \u2013 the one who is and who was, the Holy One<\/em>[16]<\/sup><\/a> (\u1f45\u03c3\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2) \u2013 because you have passed these judgments, because they poured out the blood of your saints and prophets, so you have given<\/em>[17]<\/sup><\/a> them blood to drink. \u00a0They<\/em>[18]<\/sup><\/a> got what they deserved!\u201d<\/em>[19]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Without reverting to my old ways<\/a>\u2014considering justice and mercy as opposites\u2014it seemed only fair to mention these contexts for \u1f45\u03c3\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2.\u00a0 The varied translations of \u1f45\u03c3\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2 seem to confirm my understanding of a category<\/a> called \u201cjustice-mercy.\u201d\u00a0 Though I struggle to describe this category in words or diagrams it becomes much clearer\u2014along with faithfulness and love\u2014in the person of Jesus the Christ.<\/p>\n

He will keep the feet of His holy ones<\/em>,[20]<\/sup><\/a> Hannah prayed.\u00a0 I planned to quote this as an example of \u05d7\u05e1\u05d9\u05d3\u05d5] \u05d7\u05e1\u05d9\u05d3\u05d9\u05d5] (ch\u00e2s\u0131\u0302yd<\/em>) [contrast chabad.org<\/a>] translated \u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u1f77\u03bf\u03c5<\/a> (a form of \u03b4\u03af\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) in the Septuagint.\u00a0 Comparing the Greek of the Septuagint to the Masoretic text proved more problematic than that.\u00a0 The English translations follow:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Admittedly, I wondered at first how the rabbis who translated the Septuagint got granting his petition to him that prays<\/em> from but the wicked shall be put to silence in darkness<\/em>.\u00a0 Still I lamented that this woman of ancient Israel understood something I required almost a lifetime to learn: not by strength <\/em>(NET: one\u2019s own strength<\/em>) shall man prevail<\/em>.\u00a0 The more I meditated though, the more sense it made to me that Hannah would have prayed what she acknowledged to Eli (1 Samuel 1:26-28 Tanakh):<\/p>\n

And she said: ‘Oh, my lord, as thy soul liveth, my lord, I am the woman that stood by thee here, praying unto HaShem.\u00a0 For this child I prayed; and HaShem hath granted me my petition which I asked of Him; therefore I also have lent him to HaShem; as long as he liveth he is lent to HaShem.’\u00a0 And he worshipped HaShem there.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Then I began to wonder why the Masoretes changed granting his petition to him that prays<\/em> to but the wicked shall be put to silence in darkness<\/em>.\u00a0 No contrast with the wicked is required to understand that the righteous do not prevail by their own strength.\u00a0 I began to consider Hannah\u2019s prayer of dedication in its entirety, but that must wait for another essay.<\/p>\n

To conclude this essay, I won\u2019t gainsay merciful <\/em>as a translation of \u05d7\u05e1\u05d9\u05d3 (ch\u00e2s\u0131\u0302yd<\/em>), but it was translated holy <\/em>more often, indicating the Messiah.\u00a0 Tables comparing Psalm 18:25, 26<\/a>; 16:10<\/a>; Deuternomy 33:8<\/a>; Isaiah 55:3<\/a>; 1 Samuel 2:9<\/a> and 1:26-28<\/a> in the Tanakh and NET, and tables comparing Psalm 18:25 (17:26)<\/a>; 18:26 (17:27)<\/a>; 16:10 (15:10)<\/a>; Deuteronomy 33:8<\/a>; Isaiah 55:3<\/a>; 1 Samuel (Reigns, Kings) 2:9<\/a>; 1:26<\/a>; 1:27<\/a> and 1:28<\/a> in the Septuagint (BLB and Elpenor) follow.\u00a0 Following those are tables comparing Ephesians 3:14<\/a>; 3:16<\/a>; Acts 13:35<\/a>; 13:34<\/a>; Revelation 15:4<\/a> and 16:5, 6<\/a> in the NET and KJV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n
