In another essay<\/a> I wrote, \u201cFrom now on I\u2019ll include the text of the KJV since differences might be very instructive.\u201d\u00a0 Here (Table1<\/a> below) I have that difference but it will take someone with more knowledge of Hebrew than I have to evaluate the relative merits of translating not <\/em>(\u02bcal<\/em>, \u05d0\u05b7\u05dc<\/a>) multiply <\/em>(r\u00e2b\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05ea\u05b7\u05bc\u05e8\u05b0\u05d1\u05bc\u059a\u05d5\u05bc<\/a>) no more<\/em>. \u00a0And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply<\/em> (r\u00e2b\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d5\u05e8\u05d1\u05d5), and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply<\/em> (r\u00e2b\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d9\u05e8\u05d1) in the earth<\/em>.[1]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Whatsoever goeth upon the belly, and whatsoever goeth upon all four, or whatsoever hath more<\/em> (r\u00e2b\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05de\u05e8\u05d1\u05d4; Tanakh: many<\/em>) feet among all creeping things that creep upon the earth, them ye shall not eat; for they are an abomination<\/em>.[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

To my ear the more <\/em>of more feet<\/em> is different conceptually from that of no more<\/em>, but I won\u2019t quibble about it.\u00a0 The difference in the translation of the Septuagint brings me some clarity.\u00a0 Rather than not multiply<\/em>, the rabbis chose (Table2<\/a> below) not <\/em>(\u03bc\u1f74<\/a>) boast <\/em>(\u03ba\u03b1\u03c5\u03c7\u1fb6\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a>).\u00a0 It occurs to me, since not boast <\/em>is so \u201con-the-nose<\/a>,\u201d that the translators thought not multiply<\/em> in Hebrew was too idiomatic for Greek.<\/p>\n

To throw up<\/em> is a common idiom in American English.\u00a0 But translating the words throw <\/em>and up <\/em>literally into another language won\u2019t necessarily conjure an image in the hearer\u2019s mind of someone kneeling before a toilet, vomiting into it.\u00a0 Perhaps the KJV translators thought not multiply<\/em> was too idiomatic for an English translation, too.\u00a0 The phrase no more<\/em>, while less \u201con-the-nose\u201d than not boast<\/em>, still retains some of the flavor of not multiply<\/em>.\u00a0 All of this attention to detail has me wondering if Hannah\u2019s words\u2014my mouth is enlarged over mine enemies<\/em>[3]<\/sup><\/a>\u2014should be understood as confession rather than as a model of rejoicing to be emulated.<\/p>\n

What really exercised me here (Table2<\/a> below) was and God prepares his own designs<\/em> (NETS: \u201cways\u201d).\u00a0 I was immediately reminded of, For we are his creative work, having been created in Christ Jesus for good works that God prepared beforehand so we can do them<\/em>.[4]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 At first blush the translation from Hebrew\u2014and by Him actions are weighed<\/em> (Tanakh, KJV)\u2014seemed completely different.\u00a0 I made a table of all occurrences of \u05e2\u05dc\u05dc\u05d5\u05ea<\/a> (\u02bd\u0103l\u0131\u0302yl\u00e2h<\/em>) in the Old Testament, the Hebrew word translated actions<\/em> (Tanakh, KJV), along with its Greek translation in the Septuagint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
