Less Than Sin, Part 2<\/a><\/em> to make tables of quotations that differed in the NET parallel Greek, Stephanus Textus Receptus or Byzantine Majority Text I learned that there is some question whether \u03c4\u03b7 \u03b1\u03bb\u03b7\u03b8\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1 \u03bc\u03b7 \u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03b8\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b1\u03b9 (KJV: <em>that ye should not obey the truth<\/em>) was original to Galatians 3:1 (<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/24\/is-sin-less-than-sin-part-2\/#_Table1\">Table<\/a>).\u00a0 I want to consider that possibility here.<\/p>\n<p>On the surface given my particular fetish it\u2019s a slam dunk.\u00a0 I hear <em>obey the truth<\/em> as \u201cobey the law.\u201d\u00a0 The law is clear (<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/06\/24\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-1\/#_Table1\">Table1<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/06\/24\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-1\/#_Table2\">Table2<\/a> below): <em>And in the eighth day the flesh of his<\/em> <em>foreskin <\/em>[i.e., of the new-born <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org\/vayikra-leviticus-chapter-12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">man-child<\/a>]<em> shall be circumcised<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/06\/24\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-1\/#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0But Paul wrote adult, presumably Gentile, believers in Galatia: <em>Listen!\u00a0 I, Paul, tell you that if you let yourselves be circumcised, Christ will be of no benefit to you at all!<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/06\/24\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-1\/#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a><em>\u00a0 <\/em>In English it is obvious that someone added <em>that ye should not obey the truth <\/em>to obfuscate Paul\u2019s actual point.\u00a0 In Greek it\u2019s not so obvious.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_calm\"><\/a>Had the translators chosen any other English words for <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pei.html#peiqesqai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03b8\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, the passive infinitive form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/dictionaries\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03c9\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03c9<\/a>, it wouldn\u2019t have triggered my works religion fetish (Galatians 3:1 KJV <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/24\/is-sin-less-than-sin-part-2\/#_Table1\">Table<\/a>)<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/24\/is-sin-less-than-sin-part-2\/#sdfootnote2sym\">that<\/a> ye should not <em>[be persuaded <\/em>of<em>, be convinced <\/em>of<em>, come to believe, believe, trust, follow, rely <\/em>on<em>]<\/em> the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/24\/is-sin-less-than-sin-part-2\/#sdfootnote3sym\">among you<\/a>?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Any of these translations would have persuaded me that <em>truth <\/em>would refer to Paul\u2019s teaching about Christ in his letter to the Galatians rather than to <em>law<\/em>.\u00a0 The only (or only other) occurrence of \u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b1\u03b9 in the New Testament was, <em>And if we put bits into the mouths of horses to get them to obey<\/em> (\u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b1\u03b9, a form of \u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03c9) <em>us, then we guide their entire bodies<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/06\/24\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-1\/#_ftn3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Here \u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b1\u03b9 was translated <em>to obey<\/em> in the NET and <em>may obey<\/em> in the KJV (<a href=\"#_Table3\">Table3<\/a> below).\u00a0 I wanted to focus on Paul\u2019s usage of other forms of \u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03c9 elsewhere, but realized that I had better consider <a href=\"https:\/\/biblehub.com\/greek\/3982.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">latter<\/a> was contrasted to <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/api.html#apistew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener words that include \u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03c9.\u00a0 At any other time it might have freaked me out to consider that God has given the Holy Spirit to those who <em>obey <\/em>Jesus.\u00a0 But I\u2019ve paused here because Gamaliel helped me wrap my head around what has troubled me.\u00a0 I\u2019ll get to that soon.\u00a0 Those who <em>obey<\/em> Jesus reminds me of what Peter said at Pentecost, <em>Repent, and each one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/13\/peters-first-gospel-proclamation\/#sdfootnote23sym\">your<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/13\/peters-first-gospel-proclamation\/#sdfootnote24sym\">sins<\/a>, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/06\/24\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-1\/#_ftn10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Peter didn\u2019t think the active imperative verb <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/meta.html#metanohsate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03bd\u03bf\u03ae\u03c3\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5<\/a> (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/dictionaries\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2\">\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) <em>without<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/06\/24\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-1\/#_ftn12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a><em> works<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/06\/24\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-1\/#_ftn15\"><sup>[15]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The NET definition of \u03b2\u03b1\u03c0\u03c4\u03af\u03b6\u03c9 includes the following slightly more complicated explanation:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Not to be confused with 911, bapto. \u00a0The clearest example that shows the meaning of baptizo is a text from the Greek poet and physician Nicander, who lived about 200 B.C. \u00a0It is a recipe for making pickles and is helpful because it uses both words. \u00a0Nicander says that in order to make a pickle, the vegetable should first be &#8216;dipped&#8217; (bapto) into boiling water and then &#8216;baptised&#8217; (baptizo) in the vinegar solution. \u00a0Both verbs concern the immersing of vegetables in a solution. \u00a0But the first is temporary. \u00a0The second, the act of baptising the vegetable, produces a permanent change. \u00a0When used in the New Testament, this word more often refers to our union and identification with Christ than to our water baptism. e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Mark+16:16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mr 16:16<\/a>. &#8216;He that believes and is baptised shall be saved&#8217;. \u00a0Christ is saying that mere intellectual assent is not enough. \u00a0There must be a union with him, a real change, like the vegetable to the pickle! (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblestudymagazine.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bible Study Magazine<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_Montgomery_Boice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">James Montgomery Boice<\/a>, May 1989).<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>So those who <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/13\/peters-first-gospel-proclamation\/#sdfootnote26sym\">accepted<\/a><\/em> [Peter\u2019s] <em>message<\/em>, Luke continued his narrative of Pentecost, <em>were baptized<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/eb.html#ebaptisqhsan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f10\u03b2\u03b1\u03c0\u03c4\u03af\u03c3\u03b8\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03b2\u03b1\u03c0\u03c4\u03af\u03b6\u03c9), <em>and <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/13\/peters-first-gospel-proclamation\/#sdfootnote27sym\">that<\/a> day about three thousand people were added<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/06\/24\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-1\/#_ftn16\"><sup>[16]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 So I assume these three thousand people were joined in life-changing union with Christ.\u00a0 I\u2019m uncertain whether Mr. Boice would have assumed that they had also been dipped in water.<\/p>\n<p>John the Baptist contrasted his ministry to that of Jesus as follows (Matthew 3:11-17 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI baptize <em>(\u03b2\u03b1\u03c0\u03c4\u03af\u03b6\u03c9)<\/em> you with water, for repentance <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/meta.html#metanoian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03ac\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/dictionaries\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03ac\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03b1\">\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03ac\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em>, but the one coming after me is more powerful than I am \u2013 I am not worthy to carry his sandals! \u00a0He will baptize <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/bap.html#baptisei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b2\u03b1\u03c0\u03c4\u03af\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u03b2\u03b1\u03c0\u03c4\u03af\u03b6\u03c9)<\/em> you with the Holy Spirit and fire.<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/06\/24\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-1\/#_ftn17\"><sup>[17]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> \u00a0His <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KjLCqahK2XY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">winnowing<\/a> fork is in his hand, and he will clean out his threshing floor and will gather his wheat into the storehouse, but the chaff he will burn up with inextinguishable fire!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Jesus came from Galilee to John to be baptized <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/bap.html#baptisqhnai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b2\u03b1\u03c0\u03c4\u03b9\u03c3\u03b8\u1fc6\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u03b2\u03b1\u03c0\u03c4\u03af\u03b6\u03c9)<\/em> by him in the Jordan River. \u00a0But John<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/06\/24\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-1\/#_ftn18\"><sup>[18]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> tried to prevent him, saying, \u201cI need to be baptized <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/bap.html#baptisqhnai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b2\u03b1\u03c0\u03c4\u03b9\u03c3\u03b8\u1fc6\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u03b2\u03b1\u03c0\u03c4\u03af\u03b6\u03c9)<\/em> by you, and yet you come to me?\u201d \u00a0So Jesus replied to him, \u201cLet it happen now, for it is right for us to fulfill all righteousness.\u201d \u00a0Then John yielded to him. \u00a0After<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/06\/24\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-1\/#_ftn19\"><sup>[19]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> Jesus was baptized <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/bap.html#baptisqeis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b2\u03b1\u03c0\u03c4\u03b9\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5\u1f76\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u03b2\u03b1\u03c0\u03c4\u03af\u03b6\u03c9)<\/em>, just as he was coming up out of the water, the heavens opened<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/06\/24\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-1\/#_ftn20\"><sup>[20]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him. \u00a0And a voice from heaven said, \u201cThis is my one dear Son; in him I take great delight.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Since I don\u2019t believe that this was Jesus\u2019 first encounter with the Holy Spirit (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Psalms+22:9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Psalm 22:9, 10<\/a>), I assume He went out of his way, much to John\u2019s consternation, to demonstrate a linkage between water baptism for repentance and the receiving of the Holy Spirit.\u00a0 It was not a rule: \u201cno one can receive the Holy Spirit apart from water baptism.\u201d\u00a0 <em>While Peter was still speaking<\/em> [to the Gentiles who had summoned him], <em>the Holy Spirit fell on all those who heard the message<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/06\/24\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-1\/#_ftn21\"><sup>[21]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0<em>Then Peter<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/06\/24\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-1\/#_ftn22\"><sup>[22]<\/sup><\/a><em> said<\/em> (Acts 10:46b-48a NET <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/22\/peter-and-cornelius\/#_Table9\">Table<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cNo one can withhold the water for these people to to have them baptized <em>(\u03b2\u03b1\u03c0\u03c4\u03b9\u03c3\u03b8\u1fc6\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9, another form of \u03b2\u03b1\u03c0\u03c4\u03af\u03b6\u03c9)<\/em> in the name of Jesus Christ.<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/06\/24\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-1\/#_ftn24\"><sup>[24]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Submitting to baptism is something a new believer can do to demonstrate faith and repentance, to begin to follow Jesus.\u00a0 <em>Let it happen now<\/em>, Jesus comforted John, <em>for it is right for us to fulfill all righteousness<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/06\/24\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-1\/#_ftn25\"><sup>[25]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Jesus was baptized in the muddy brown Jordan River rather than an over-sized bathtub or a small swimming pool.\u00a0 As He disappeared under the water and then rose again, glistening in the sunlight, He presented a beautiful image of Paul\u2019s teaching to believers in Rome (Romans 6:3, 4 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Or do you not know that as many as were baptized <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/eb.html#ebaptisqhmen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f10\u03b2\u03b1\u03c0\u03c4\u03af\u03c3\u03b8\u03b7\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03b2\u03b1\u03c0\u03c4\u03af\u03b6\u03c9)<\/em> into Christ Jesus were baptized <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/eb.html#ebaptisqhmen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f10\u03b2\u03b1\u03c0\u03c4\u03af\u03c3\u03b8\u03b7\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03b2\u03b1\u03c0\u03c4\u03af\u03b6\u03c9)<\/em> into his death?\u00a0 Therefore we have been buried with him through baptism <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/bap.html#baptismatos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b2\u03b1\u03c0\u03c4\u03af\u03c3\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/dictionaries\/greek-dictionary-3\/#_\u03b2\u03ac\u03c0\u03c4\u03b9\u03c3\u03bc\u03b1\">\u03b2\u03ac\u03c0\u03c4\u03b9\u03c3\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em> into death, in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too may live a new life.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Much as I like Mr. Boice\u2019s imagery, my initial investigations are yielding a negative result, since Jesus, Cornelius and (I assume) no believers in Rome were drowned in the waters of baptism.\u00a0 John the Baptist\/Matthew, Peter\/Luke and Paul have not demonstrated so technical a usage of forms of \u03b2\u03b1\u03c0\u03c4\u03af\u03b6\u03c9 versus forms of <a href=\"https:\/\/biblehub.com\/greek\/911.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b2\u03ac\u03c0\u03c4\u03c9<\/a> as is found in Nicander\u2019s pickle recipe thus far.\u00a0 I won\u2019t pursue an exhaustive search here, since I\u2019ve already interrupted an exhaustive search of forms of \u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03c9 to listen to Gamaliel.<\/p>\n<p>When the council and the <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Acts+5:27\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">high priest<\/a> heard Peter and the apostles say, <em>we are witnesses of these events, and so is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/06\/24\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-1\/#_ftn26\"><sup>[26]<\/sup><\/a> <em>they became furious and wanted<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/06\/24\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-1\/#_ftn27\"><sup>[27]<\/sup><\/a> <em>to execute them. \u00a0But a Pharisee whose name was Gamaliel, a teacher of the law who was respected by all the people, stood up in the council and ordered the<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/06\/24\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-1\/#_ftn28\"><sup>[28]<\/sup><\/a> <em>men<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/06\/24\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-1\/#_ftn29\"><sup>[29]<\/sup><\/a> <em>to be put outside for a short time<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/06\/24\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-1\/#_ftn30\"><sup>[30]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Gamaliel addressed the Council (Acts 5:35b-39 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cMen of Israel, pay close attention to what you are about to do to these men. \u00a0For some time ago Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody, and about<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/06\/24\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-1\/#_ftn31\"><sup>[31]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> four hundred men joined<em><a Judas the Galilean arose in the days of the census, and incited people<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/06\/24\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-1\/#_ftn33\"><sup>[33]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> to follow him in revolt. \u00a0He too was killed, and all who followed <em>(\u1f10\u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf, another form of \u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03c9; KJV: <\/em>obeyed<em>)<\/em> him were scattered. \u00a0So in this case I say to you, stay away from these men and leave them alone,<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/06\/24\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-1\/#_ftn34\"><sup>[34]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> because if this plan or this undertaking originates with people, it will come to nothing, but if it is from God, you will not be able to stop them,<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/06\/24\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-1\/#_ftn35\"><sup>[35]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> or you may even be found fighting against God.\u201d\u00a0 He convinced <em>(\u1f10\u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03c3\u03b8\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd, another form of \u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03c9)<\/em> them\u2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Given that <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epei.html#epeiqonto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epei.html#epeisqhsan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03c3\u03b8\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a> are both passive 3<sup>rd<\/sup> person plural forms of \u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03c9, the KJV translation\u2014<em>And to him they agreed<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/06\/24\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-1\/#_ftn36\"><sup>[36]<\/sup><\/a>\u2014is a more accurate translation of the Greek than the more active <em>He convinced them<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/06\/24\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-1\/#_ftn37\"><sup>[37]<\/sup><\/a> in the NET.\u00a0 Also \u1f10\u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03c3\u03b8\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd might have been translated <em>obeyed<\/em>, the same way \u1f10\u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf was in the KJV, since the council did not carry out its desire or counsel to execute the apostles.\u00a0 Gamaliel held no gun to their heads.\u00a0 Rather, they were persuaded by his history lesson.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_fruit\"><\/a>What stood out in sharp enough relief for me to finally perceive it this time was the fact that all who <em>followed <\/em>or <em>obeyed <\/em>Theudas did so in their own strength.\u00a0 Theudas was powerless to give them his spirit, much less the Holy Spirit of God.\u00a0 Likewise, all who <em>followed <\/em>or <em>obeyed <\/em>Judas the Galilean did so in their own strength.\u00a0 He was unable to fill them with a love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control that could sustain them.\u00a0 Theudas and Judas the Galilean left their followers to their own devices.\u00a0 After they were killed their followers were <em>dispersed <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dial.html#dialuw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03b5\u03bb\u03cd\u03b8\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>) and <em>scattered <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dias.html#diaskorpizw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03b5\u03c3\u03ba\u03bf\u03c1\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03b8\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Here I can distinguish the true Christ from the false.\u00a0 The true Christ fulfills the promise of the <em>Lord\u00a0<\/em>(<em>\u02bc\u0103d\u00f4n\u00e2y<\/em>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/dictionaries\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_\u02bc\u0103d\u00f4n\u00e2y\">\u05d0\u05b2\u05d3\u05b9\u05e0\u05b8\u05a3\u05d9<\/a>)\u00a0<em>God\u00a0<\/em>(<em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4vih<\/em>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/dictionaries\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_yeh\u00f4vih\">\u05d9\u05b1\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b4\u0594\u05d4<\/a>): <em>And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/06\/24\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-1\/#_ftn38\"><sup>[38]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And this, not by <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/1+Corinthians+15:56\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">obeying rules<\/a>: <em>For the law possesses a shadow of the good things to come but not the reality itself, and is therefore completely unable, by the same sacrifices offered continually, year after year, to perfect those who come to worship<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/06\/24\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-1\/#_ftn39\"><sup>[39]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Paul described it this way (Romans 7:4-6 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>So, my brothers and sisters, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you could be joined to another, to the one who was raised from the dead, to bear fruit to God. \u00a0For when we were in the flesh, the sinful desires, aroused by the law, were active in the members of our body to bear fruit for death. \u00a0But now we have been released from the law, because we have <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Romans+6:7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">died<\/a> to what controlled us, so that we may serve in the new life of the Spirit and not under the old written code.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a id=\"_tongues\"><\/a>It bears mentioning here that I have never spoken in tongues or performed a miraculous sign.\u00a0 I am about as <a href=\"http:\/\/shadowhunters.com\/about-shadowhunters\/shadowhunters-101\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mundane<\/a> a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Muggle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">muggle<\/a> as you will ever meet.\u00a0 And still by the continuous infusion of the fruit of Christ\u2019s Holy Spirit I am being <em>renewed in the spirit of<\/em> [my] <em>mind, and<\/em> [putting] <em>on the new man who has been created in God\u2019s image \u2013 in righteousness and holiness that comes from truth<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/06\/24\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-1\/#_ftn40\"><sup>[40]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Pope Francis made the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianpost.com\/news\/pope-francis-approves-change-to-the-lords-prayer-despite-opposition-its-deeply-problematic.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">news<\/a> recently approving a change to the English translation of the Lord&#8217;s Prayer.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not the first time I&#8217;ve heard this translation questioned, and I mostly frequent Protestant circles.\u00a0 The Lord knows He will not tempt me to sin, but I didn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>As I began to let go of the only way of righteousness I had ever known\u2014forcing myself to obey the rules, norms and standards of righteousness handed down to me by God, governments, parents and teachers\u2014to rely instead upon the <em>love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/08\/26\/atonement-part-4\/#_ftn22\">gentleness<\/a>, and self-control<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/06\/24\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-1\/#_ftn41\"><sup>[41]<\/sup><\/a> of his Holy Spirit, that <em>does no wrong to a neighbor<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/06\/24\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-1\/#_ftn42\"><sup>[42]<\/sup><\/a> and is therefore the fulfillment (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Romans+8:3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Romans 8:3, 4<\/a>) of God&#8217;s law, <em>the righteousness of God through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ for <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/11\/12\/atonement-part-11\/#_ftn43\">all<\/a> who believe<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/06\/24\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-1\/#_ftn43\"><sup>[43]<\/sup><\/a> I was scared.\u00a0 And unfortunately when I was going through the worst of it I didn&#8217;t pray the Lord&#8217;s prayer very often.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_loyalty\"><\/a>I thought it was a model prayer to be imitated rather than an actual prayer to be prayed.\u00a0 But now I pray daily, not just for myself but for all, from the Pope to the homeless man who blessed me at the stoplight for the last of my cash: \u201cand lead us&#8230;(pause a beat)&#8230; not into temptation but deliver us from the evil.\u201d\u00a0 Praying that daily (or more often) really helps when the Holy Spirit leads in a direction my religious mind doesn&#8217;t want to go.\u00a0 I sensed, especially, the love, kindness and gentleness of the Holy Spirit welling up within me before I let Him affect me, at least before I welcomed and appreciated his affect in me.\u00a0 I <a href=\"https:\/\/biblehub.com\/1_thessalonians\/5-19.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">quenched<\/a> the Spirit because I thought I was supposed to be tougher than that.\u00a0 <em>Against such things<\/em> [i.e., the fruit of the Spirit] <em>there is no law<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/06\/24\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-1\/#_ftn44\"><sup>[44]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If I make a mistake and head off in a direction contrary to the Spirit&#8217;s leading, <em>if while seeking to be justified in Christ<\/em> [I myself] <em>have also been found to be<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/06\/24\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-1\/#_ftn45\"><sup>[45]<\/sup><\/a> a sinner, well, the Lord&#8217;s prayer has that covered, too: \u201cForgive us our debts as we have <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Matthew+6:14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">forgiven<\/a> (or, as <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/07\/forgiveness\/#_Table1\">we forgive<\/a>) our debtors&#8230;for Yours (i.e., God&#8217;s, not mine) is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.\u00a0 I do believe You\u201d (see <a
