{"id":1244,"date":"2012-09-16T22:47:45","date_gmt":"2012-09-16T16:47:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/?p=1244"},"modified":"2023-12-28T12:18:16","modified_gmt":"2023-12-28T18:18:16","slug":"davids-forgiveness-part-11","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/religiousmind.net\/?p=1244","title":{"rendered":"David&#8217;s Forgiveness, Part 11"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Now the Lord had decided to frustrate the sound advice of Ahithophel, so that the Lord could bring disaster on Absalom<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/16\/davids-forgiveness-part-11\/#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I want to keep this in mind as I continue, just in case the NET translators are right to have translated the Hebrew word <em>sound advice<\/em> here, the same word they translated twice earlier in the same verse as simply <em>advice<\/em> (See <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/16\/davids-forgiveness-part-11\/#_Addenduma\">Addendum<\/a> below).<\/p>\n<p><em>Ahithophel said to Absalom, \u201cLet me pick out twelve thousand men.\u00a0 Then I will go and pursue David this very night.\u201d<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/16\/davids-forgiveness-part-11\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I will concede that to pursue David immediately was probably the wisest course of action on the horizontal plane (if one had decided without possibility of repentance to pursue the Lord\u2019s chosen or anointed one).\u00a0 <em>When I catch up with him he will be exhausted and worn out<\/em>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/16\/davids-forgiveness-part-11\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> Ahithophel continued.\u00a0 That was true, and probably would have given Ahithophel a 50-50 chance of defeating David and his men, if God died suddenly overnight.\u00a0 It seems to me, however, that the answer to <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/28\/davids-forgiveness-part-9\/\">David\u2019s prayer<\/a> is clear in the foolishness of the rest of Ahithophel\u2019s advice.<\/p>\n<p><em>I will rout him, and the entire army that is with him will flee<\/em>, Ahithophel continued, spewing nothing but bravado.\u00a0 <em>I will kill only the king and will bring the entire army back to you<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/16\/davids-forgiveness-part-11\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Did he know David at all? or the loyalty he inspired in his men?<\/p>\n<p>David once made an idle comment in the hearing of some of his men, <em>How I wish someone would give me some water to drink from the cistern in Bethlehem near the gate!<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/16\/davids-forgiveness-part-11\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The Philistines were garrisoned in Bethlehem at the time.\u00a0 So three of David\u2019s<em> elite warriors broke through the Philistine forces and drew some water from the cistern in Bethlehem near the gate. They carried it back to David<\/em>\u2026<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/16\/davids-forgiveness-part-11\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 A lesser commander might have thanked them, rewarded them handsomely, toasted them and drank the water.\u00a0 David <em>poured it out as a drink offering to the Lord and said, \u201cO Lord, I will not do this!\u00a0 It is equivalent to the blood of the men who risked their lives by going.\u201d<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/16\/davids-forgiveness-part-11\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>In exchange for the life of the man you are seeking<\/em>, Ahithophel continued, <em>you will get back everyone.\u00a0 The entire army will return unharmed<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/16\/davids-forgiveness-part-11\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Was he serious?<\/p>\n<p><em>These are the names of David\u2019s warriors: Josheb-Basshebeth, a Tahkemonite\u2026killed eight hundred men with his spear in one battle<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/16\/davids-forgiveness-part-11\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>Eleazar son of Dodo, the son of Ahohi\u2026was one of the three warriors who were with David when they defied the Philistines who were assembled there for battle.\u00a0 When the men of Israel retreated, he stood his ground and fought the Philistines until his hand grew so tired that it seemed stuck to his sword. The Lord gave a great victory on that day.\u00a0 When the army returned to him, the only thing left to do was to plunder the corpses<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/16\/davids-forgiveness-part-11\/#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>When the Philistines assembled at Lehi, where there happened to be an area of a field that was full of lentils, the army retreated before the Philistines. \u00a0But [Shammah son of Agee the Hararite] made a stand in the middle of that area.\u00a0 He defended it and defeated the Philistines; the Lord gave them a great victory<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/16\/davids-forgiveness-part-11\/#sdfootnote11sym\" name=\"sdfootnote11anc\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I doubt that these three warriors were with David when he fled from Absalom, but they were the commanders who trained other younger warriors to fight for David.\u00a0 <em>When David assembled the army that was with him.\u00a0 He appointed leaders of thousands and leaders of hundreds<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/16\/davids-forgiveness-part-11\/#sdfootnote12sym\" name=\"sdfootnote12anc\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 He divided that army into thirds under the commands of Joab, Joab\u2019s brother Abishai son of Zeruiah, and Ittai the Gittite.\u00a0 He planned to go out to battle with them, but his warriors said, <em>You should not do this!\u00a0 For if we should have to make a rapid retreat, they won\u2019t be too concerned about us.\u00a0 Even if half of us should die, they won\u2019t be too concerned about us.\u00a0 But you are like ten thousand of us!\u00a0 So it is better if you remain in the city for support<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/16\/davids-forgiveness-part-11\/#sdfootnote13sym\" name=\"sdfootnote13anc\"><sup>13<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But Absalom was young and Ahithophel\u2019s advice <em>seemed like a good idea to Absalom and to all the leaders of Israel<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/16\/davids-forgiveness-part-11\/#sdfootnote14sym\" name=\"sdfootnote14anc\"><sup>14<\/sup><\/a> who had sided with him.\u00a0 Still, Absalom sought out the advice of Hushai the Arkite, David\u2019s friend.\u00a0 <em>Ahithophel\u2019s advice is not sound this time<\/em>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/16\/davids-forgiveness-part-11\/#sdfootnote15sym\" name=\"sdfootnote15anc\"><sup>15<\/sup><\/a> Hushai said.\u00a0 Hushai not only knew David, he had Absalom pegged as well.\u00a0 Besides that it seems that he realized that Ahithophel was so frightened for his own welfare, so adamant to make sure that David\u2019s death was done right and by his own hand, that he had not taken the hopes, fears, desires or ego of the young prince fully into account.<\/p>\n<p><em>You know your father and his men<\/em>, Hushai reminded Absalom, <em>they are soldiers and are as dangerous as a bear out in the wild that has been robbed of her cubs<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/16\/davids-forgiveness-part-11\/#sdfootnote16sym\" name=\"sdfootnote16anc\"><sup>16<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 That was true.\u00a0 <em>Your father is an experienced soldier; he will not stay overnight with the army. \u00a0At this very moment he is hiding out in one of the caves or in some other similar place<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/16\/davids-forgiveness-part-11\/#sdfootnote17sym\" name=\"sdfootnote17anc\"><sup>17<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 That was a lie, but a plausible lie.\u00a0 More than that it elicited memories of the bedtime stories Absalom and his brothers begged to hear their father tell, about hiding from King Saul in the cave (See <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/16\/davids-forgiveness-part-11\/#_Addendumb\">Addendum<\/a> below).<\/p>\n<p><em>If it should turn out that he attacks our troops first<\/em>, Hushai continued, <em>whoever hears about it will say, \u201cAbsalom\u2019s army has been slaughtered!\u201d <\/em>\u00a0<em>If that happens even the bravest soldier \u2013 one who is lion-hearted \u2013 will virtually melt away.\u00a0 For all Israel knows that your father is a warrior and that those who are with him are brave<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/16\/davids-forgiveness-part-11\/#sdfootnote18sym\" name=\"sdfootnote18anc\"><sup>18<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0After turning Absalom into a barefoot boy listening raptly to his father\u2019s brave exploits, and rekindling his boyish faith that \u201cno one is tougher than my Dad,\u201d Hushai alarmed him with a plausible scenario.<\/p>\n<p><em>My advice therefore is this<\/em>, Hushai continued.\u00a0 <em>Let all Israel from Dan to Beer Sheba \u2013 in number like the sand by the sea! \u2013 be mustered to you, and you lead them personally into battle<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/16\/davids-forgiveness-part-11\/#sdfootnote19sym\" name=\"sdfootnote19anc\"><sup>19<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Absalom didn\u2019t want to be a frightened boy in awe of his father.\u00a0 He wanted to be a leader of men like his father.\u00a0 Why did King Saul fear his father?\u00a0 Was it not that he heard the women sing, <em>Saul has struck down his thousands, <\/em><em>but David his tens of thousands<\/em>?<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/16\/davids-forgiveness-part-11\/#sdfootnote20sym\" name=\"sdfootnote20anc\"><sup>20<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Who is this Ahithophel who would rob Absalom of his glory?\u00a0 Surely Ahithophel with twelve thousand men was no match for Absalom\u2019s father, the mighty David.\u00a0 But Absalom himself at the head of an army <em>in number like the sand by the sea<\/em>, that would be a different story.<\/p>\n<p>When Hushai knew he had the young prince in the palm of his hand he <a and drag it down to the valley, so that not a single pebble will be left there!<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/16\/davids-forgiveness-part-11\/#sdfootnote21sym\" name=\"sdfootnote21anc\"><sup>21<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Then Absalom and all the men of Israel said, \u201cThe advice of Hushai the Arkite sounds better than the advice of Ahithophel.\u201d<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\"
