In the Tanakh (Table3<\/a> below) \u05d7\u05b8\u05d3\u05b5\u0591\u05dc\u05bc\u05d5\u05bc<\/a> was translated have ceased<\/em>, or ceased <\/em>in the KJV.\u00a0 The translators of the NET understood \u05d7\u05d3\u05dc\u05d5<\/a> (ch\u00e2dal<\/em>) as no longer lack<\/em>, though the rabbis who translated the Septuagint (Table4<\/a> below) chose \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u1fc6\u03ba\u03b1\u03bd \u03b3\u1fc6\u03bd (have forsaken the land<\/em>).\u00a0 This variation of meaning was evident in the first occurrence of \u05d7\u05d3\u05dc\u05d5 (ch\u00e2dal<\/em>): So HaShem scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth; and they left off <\/em>(\u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05b7\u05bc\u05d7\u05b0\u05d3\u05b0\u05bc\u05dc\u0596\u05d5\u05bc) to build the city<\/em>.[1]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 They stopped building <\/em>in the NET (Table5<\/a> below) because few (or none) remained to continue. \u00a0The rabbis chose \u1f10\u03c0\u03b1\u03cd\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf<\/a> (Table6<\/a> below) the middle voice of \u03c0\u03b1\u03cd\u03c9<\/a> which can mean \u201cto stop doing (something)\u201d as well as \u201cto leave\u201d or \u201cto cease to exist.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the days of Shamgar the son of Anath, in the days of Jael, the highways were unoccupied<\/em> (\u05d7\u05b8\u05d3\u05b0\u05dc\u0596\u05d5\u05bc<\/a>), and the travellers walked through byways<\/em>.[2]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The KJV was identical here (Table7<\/a> below) while the NET had caravans disappeared<\/em> (ch\u00e2dal<\/em>, \u05d7\u05d3\u05dc\u05d5).\u00a0 The Tanakh<\/a> on chabad.org<\/a> rendered it caravans ceased<\/em>.\u00a0 All conjure an image of depopulation.\u00a0 The Greek word \u1f10\u03be\u03ad\u03bb\u03b9\u03c0\u03bf\u03bd<\/a> (Table8<\/a> below) was translated they deserted <\/em>the ways in one version of the Septuagint and kings were lacking<\/em> in another.<\/p>\n

The inhabitants of the villages ceased<\/em> (\u05d7\u05b8\u05d3\u05b0\u05dc\u05a7\u05d5\u05bc<\/a>), they ceased<\/em> (\u05d7\u05b8\u05d3\u05b5\u0591\u05dc\u05bc\u05d5\u05bc) in Israel, until that I Deborah arose, that I arose a mother in Israel<\/em>.[3]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 There is some question who ceased <\/em>or were scarce<\/em> (Table9<\/a> below) or was lacking<\/em> or failed <\/em>(Table10<\/a> below), but all seemed to be attempting a translation of \u05d7\u05d3\u05dc\u05d5 (ch\u00e2dal<\/em>).\u00a0 I wanted to consider at least one example where the clear intent was to stop something: And Samson said unto them, Though ye have done this, yet will I be avenged of you, and after that I will cease<\/em>.[4]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Samson promised to quit killing after he got revenge (Table11<\/a> below).<\/p>\n

Though the rabbis chose different Greek words\u2014\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u1fc6\u03ba\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, \u1f10\u03c0\u03b1\u03cd\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf<\/a>, \u1f10\u03be\u03ad\u03bb\u03b9\u03c0\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, \u1f10\u03be\u03ad\u03bb\u03b9\u03c0\u03b5\u03bd<\/a> and \u03ba\u03bf\u03c0\u03ac\u03c3<\/a>\u2014I\u2019m convinced, except for the BLB version of Judges 15:7 (Table12<\/a> below), that some form of \u05d7\u05b8\u05d3\u05b7\u05dc (ch\u00e2dal<\/em>) was the Hebrew word in question.\u00a0 Again<\/a>, the Tanakh and KJV have the most accurate translation as far as the range of meaning of the word is concerned, but Hannah probably meant something more like the hungry no longer lack <\/em>or the hungry have forsaken the land<\/em>.\u00a0 So the cautious translation\u2014ceased <\/em>or have ceased<\/em>\u2014is a tacit admission that the translators of the KJV and Tanakh had no more idea what Hannah actually meant than I do.<\/p>\n

I lacked the patience for this kind of ambiguity<\/a> when I searched the Bible for rules<\/a> to justify me and condemn you if we disagreed.\u00a0 Such ambiguity threatened the veracity as well as the harshness of my judgments.\u00a0 Studying to know<\/em>…the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom<\/em> [He] sent<\/em>[5]<\/sup><\/a> is another matter entirely. \u00a0Lessons on the limitations of the language that carry that knowledge are part of the process.\u00a0 I won\u2019t spend any more time here trying to crack the code of what Hannah actually meant.\u00a0 I\u2019m more interested in what she prayed next, something that has enjoyed more universal agreement among translators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

This was the first time the Hebrew word \u05d5\u05d9\u05e2\u05dc<\/a> (\u02bd\u00e2l\u00e2h<\/em>; Tanakh: bringeth up<\/em>) was used to mean resurrection<\/em>.\u00a0 It was translated \u1f00\u03bd\u03ac\u03b3\u03b5\u03b9<\/a> (a form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03ac\u03b3\u03c9<\/a>; brings up<\/em>) in the Septuagint (Table14<\/a> below).\u00a0 Now may the God of peace who by the blood of the eternal covenant brought back <\/em>(\u1f00\u03bd\u03b1\u03b3\u03b1\u03b3\u1f7c\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03ac\u03b3\u03c9) from the dead the great shepherd of the sheep, our Lord Jesus, equip you with every good thing<\/em>[6]<\/sup><\/a> to do his will, working in us<\/em>[7]<\/sup><\/a> what is pleasing before him through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever.<\/em>[8]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Amen<\/em>.[9]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Here \u05d5\u05b0\u05d4\u05b7\u05bd\u05e2\u05b2\u05dc\u05b5\u05d9\u05ea\u05b4\u05a5\u05d9 (come up<\/em>) was translated \u1f00\u03bd\u03ac\u03be\u03c9<\/a> (another form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03ac\u03b3\u03c9) and \u05d5\u05bc\u05d1\u05b0\u05d4\u05b7\u05bd\u05e2\u05b2\u05dc\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea\u05b4\u05a5\u05d9 (brought\u2026up<\/em>) was translated \u1f00\u03bd\u03b1\u03b3\u03b1\u03b3\u03b5\u1fd7\u03bd<\/a> (another form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03ac\u03b3\u03c9).\u00a0 I admit I have taken this resurrection<\/a> literally. \u00a0Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu<\/a> spoke January 27, 2010 at Auschwitz<\/a> in Poland, and said<\/a>:<\/p>\n

We, the Jewish nation, who lost a third of our people on Europe’s blood-soaked soil, have learned that the only guarantee for defending our people is a strong State of Israel and the army of Israel\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n

The Jewish people rose from ashes and destruction, from a terrible pain that can never be healed. Armed with the Jewish spirit, the justice of man, and the vision of the prophets, we sprouted new branches and grew deep roots. Dry bones became covered with flesh, a spirit filled them, and they lived and stood on their own feet.<\/em><\/p>\n

As Ezekiel prophesized:<\/em><\/p>\n

“Then He said unto me: These bones are the whole House of Israel. They say, ‘Our bones are dried up, our hope is gone; we are doomed.’ Prophecy [sic], therefore, and say to them: Thus said the Lord God: I am going to open your graves and lift you out of your graves, O My people, and bring you to the land of Israel.”<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Almost three weeks later an anonymous blogger wrote<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Israel came back from the dead in 1948.\u00a0 In spite of the obviousness of the situation, there are many who continue to deny this and look at this as either an accident of nature, or simply due to Israel\u2019s stubborness.\u00a0 However, in spite of the all the odds, Israel once again became a nation.\u00a0 Not only this, but since that time, the language of Hebrew (also dead as a language prior to that point), was resurrected.\u00a0 This is unheard of that dead languages are resurrected!<\/em><\/p>\n

Today, continuing against all odds, Israel exists.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It is the kind of activity Hannah credited to God:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The Hebrew word translated pillars <\/em>was \u05de\u05b0\u05e6\u05bb\u05a3\u05e7\u05b5\u05d9<\/a> (m\u00e2ts\u00fbq<\/em>).\u00a0 It only occurred one other time: The one crag rose up<\/em> (\u05de\u05b8\u05e6\u05a5\u05d5\u05bc\u05e7) on the north in front of Michmas, and the other on the south in front of Geba<\/em>.[10]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The rabbis translated this verse in the Septuagint without translating the modifier \u05de\u05b8\u05e6\u05a5\u05d5\u05bc\u05e7 (m\u00e2ts\u00fbq<\/em>).\u00a0 In the English translations of the Septuagint (Table26<\/a> below) the word was <\/em>was supplied just like \u05de\u05b8\u05e6\u05a5\u05d5\u05bc\u05e7 (m\u00e2ts\u00fbq<\/em>) was translated in the NET (Table25<\/a> below).\u00a0 But a crag or cliff face \u201cpillared up\u201d conjures a mental image not unlike an igneous rock formation called columnar jointing<\/a>.<\/p>\n

An entry titled \u201cThe Hexagon Pool<\/a>\u201d on Milestones Israel<\/a> online reads:<\/p>\n

A fact maybe not widely known is that many of the mountain and rock formations in Israel are volcanic.\u00a0 The result is beautiful sites such as the Hexagon Pool<\/a> which can be found in the Yehudiya Forest in northern Israel.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I can easily imagine Hannah describing columnar jointing as pillars of the earth<\/em>.\u00a0 The most apparent reason why the rabbis wouldn\u2019t translate it was deference to Greek knowledge of a spherical earth.\u00a0 Perhaps a world <\/em>(\u05ea\u05b5\u05bc\u05d1\u05b5\u05bd\u05dc<\/a>) placed on pillars sounded a little too much like a flat earth. \u00a0Though this strikes me as more a modern than an ancient concern, the Wikipedia article \u201cSpherical Earth<\/a>\u201d reads<\/a>:<\/p>\n

The Hebrew Bible imagined a three-part world, with the heavens (shamayim) above, Earth (eres) in the middle, and the underworld (sheol) below.[35<\/a>]<\/sup> After the 4th century BC this was gradually replaced by a Greek scientific cosmology of a spherical Earth surrounded by multiple concentric heavens<\/a>.[36<\/a>]<\/sup><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I still wanted to examine the scriptures.\u00a0 Since I couldn\u2019t pursue \u05de\u05b0\u05e6\u05bb\u05a3\u05e7\u05b5\u05d9, pillars<\/em>, any further I looked at \u05ea\u05b5\u05bc\u05d1\u05b5\u05bd\u05dc (t\u00eab\u00eal<\/em>), world<\/em>.\u00a0 And the channels of the sea appeared, the foundations<\/em> (\u05de\u05b9\u05e1\u05b0\u05d3\u05a3\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea) of the world<\/em> (\u05ea\u05b5\u05bc\u05d1\u05b5\u0591\u05dc) were laid bare by the rebuke of HaShem, at the blast of the breath of His nostrils<\/em>.[11]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The rabbis had no problem with this one: And the channels of the sea were seen, and the foundations<\/em> (\u03b8\u03b5\u03bc\u03ad\u03bb\u03b9\u03b1<\/a>) of the world<\/em> (\u03bf\u1f30\u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03b7\u03c2<\/a>) were discovered, at the rebuke of the Lord, at the blast of the breath of his anger<\/em>.[12]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0This is repeated with minor variations in Psalm 18:15 (Table29<\/a> and Table30<\/a> below).\u00a0 Granted, the rabbis may have perceived David\u2019s song<\/a> as less literal than Hannah\u2019s prayer.<\/p>\n

I began to investigate verses which contained both \u05de\u05b9\u05e1\u05b0\u05d3\u05a3\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea (foundations<\/em>) and \u05d0\u05b6\u05a8\u05e8\u05b6\u05e5\u0599<\/a> (earth<\/em>) as a proxy for pillars of the earth<\/em>.\u00a0 For a fire is kindled in My nostril, and burneth unto the depths of the nether-world, and devoureth the earth<\/em> (\u05d0\u05b6\u05a8\u05e8\u05b6\u05e5\u0599) with her produce, and setteth ablaze the foundations<\/em> (\u05de\u05bd\u05d5\u05b9\u05e1\u05b0\u05d3\u05b5\u05a5\u05d9) of the mountains<\/em>.[13]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The rabbis translated this practically verbatim: For a fire has been kindled out of my wrath, it shall burn to hell below; it shall devour the land<\/em> (\u03b3\u1fc6\u03bd<\/a>; NETS: earth<\/em>), and the fruits of it; it shall set on fire the foundations<\/em> (\u03b8\u03b5\u03bc\u03ad\u03bb\u03b9\u03b1<\/a>) of the mountains<\/em>.[14]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 As far as it goes it\u2019s a fairly good description of volcanism<\/a>, except for attributing volcanism to God\u2019s anger at Israel\u2019s sin and rebellion (Deuteronomy 32:21<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Then the earth<\/em> (\u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b8\u0594\u05e8\u05b6\u05e5) did shake and quake, the foundations<\/em> (\u05de\u05d5\u05b9\u05e1\u05b0\u05d3\u05a5\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea) of heaven did tremble; they were shaken, because He was wroth<\/em>.[15]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The rabbis render it: And the earth<\/em> (\u03b3\u1fc6<\/a>) was troubled and quaked, and the foundations<\/em> (\u03b8\u03b5\u03bc\u03ad\u03bb\u03b9\u03b1<\/a>) of heaven were confounded and torn asunder, because the Lord was wroth with them<\/em>.[16]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This theme of earthquakes and God\u2019s anger continued.<\/p>\n

Then the earth<\/em> (\u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b8\u0597\u05e8\u05b6\u05e5) shook and trembled; the foundations<\/em> (\u05d5\u05bc\u05de\u05bd\u05d5\u05b9\u05e1\u05b0\u05d3\u05b5\u05a3\u05d9) also of the hills moved and were shaken, because he was wroth<\/em>.[17]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The rabbis translated it: Then the earth<\/em> (\u03b3\u1fc6<\/a>) shook and quaked, and the foundations<\/em> (\u03b8\u03b5\u03bc\u03ad\u03bb\u03b9\u03b1<\/a>) of the mountains were disturbed, and were shaken, because God was angry with them<\/em>.[18]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

I saved the final two occurrences of \u05de\u05b9\u05e1\u05b0\u05d3\u05a3\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea (foundations<\/em>) and \u05d0\u05b6\u05a8\u05e8\u05b6\u05e5\u0599 (earth<\/em>) as a transition to considering the alternative that Masoretes added for the pillars of the earth are HaShem’S, and He hath set the world upon them <\/em>to Hannah\u2019s prayer.<\/p>\n

Thus saith the LORD; If heaven above can be measured, and the foundations<\/em> (\u05de\u05bd\u05d5\u05b9\u05e1\u05b0\u05d3\u05b5\u05d9) of the earth<\/em> (\u05d0\u05b6\u0596\u05e8\u05b6\u05e5) searched out beneath, I will also cast off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done, saith the LORD<\/em>.[21]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The Septuagint was significantly different.\u00a0 Though the sky should be raised to a [greater] height, saith the Lord, and though the ground<\/em> (\u1f14\u03b4\u03b1\u03c6\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) of the earth<\/em> (\u03b3\u1fc6\u03c2<\/a>) should be sunk [lower] beneath, yet I will not cast off the family of Israel, saith the Lord, for all that they have done<\/em>.[22]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

The first thing that leapt out at me was the possibility that \u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03ad\u03c9\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd<\/a> (Table46<\/a> below) was a copyist\u2019s jumble of \u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a> and \u03bc\u03ad\u03c4\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>.\u00a0 On the other hand, if one considers astronomy<\/a> and geophysics<\/a> as fulfilling the conditions specified in the Masoretic text to cast off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done<\/em>, the rabbis\u2019 translation in the Septuagint might become preferable to those who believe that God is faithful to Israel for the sake of his holy name<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Jacob \u201cFreudenthal\u2019s ultimate conclusion\u2026was that \u2018the translation of the so-called Septuagint bears no traces of the inroad of Greek philosophy into Jewish Hellenism.\u2019\u201d[23]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0If I wonder whether that might apply to Greek cosmology as well, and consider more seriously that the Masoretes\u2019 \u201cultimate goal was to uphold the traditions of the Jewish people,\u201d[24]<\/sup><\/a> my attention becomes focused on why they would add something to Hannah\u2019s prayer?\u00a0 My assumption would be for misdirection.\u00a0 They wanted my attention drawn away from the Savior\/Judge Hannah had praised up to that point and onto the Creator.\u00a0 So I fastened on inherit the throne of glory <\/em>because of its proximity, preceding the suspected addition.<\/p>\n

The Hebrew word translated throne <\/em>was \u05d5\u05b0\u05db\u05b4\u05e1\u05b5\u05bc\u05a5\u05d0<\/a> (kiss\u00ea\u02bc<\/a><\/em>) and glory <\/em>was \u05db\u05b8\u05d1\u0596\u05d5\u05b9\u05d3 (k\u00e2b\u00f4d<\/a><\/em>).\u00a0 I began with the most notable throne one might inherit, God\u2019s promise to David through the prophet Nathan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
