href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/18\/romans-part-17\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The NET translators chose <em>principle<\/em> for the first two occurrences of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/no.html#nomou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bd\u1f79\u03bc\u03bf\u03c5<\/a> (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/no.html#nomos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) in this passage to help the reader distinguish between the \u201claw of faith\u201d that excludes boasting and the <em>works of the law<\/em>, one\u2019s own efforts to keep God\u2019s law.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_alone\"><\/a>It is virtually impossible for me to quote the above passage without recalling James\u2019 letter, <em>a person is justified <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaioutai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaiow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>) <em>by works<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/er.html#ergwn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03c9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/er.html#ergon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>) href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/mo.html#monon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u1f79\u03bd\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/mo.html#monos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03cc\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>).<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/18\/romans-part-17\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0I\u2019ve often wondered if James intended to refute or correct Paul.\u00a0 But James didn\u2019t write enough that I can know his intent.\u00a0 So I content myself with attempting to understand the Holy Spirit\u2019s intent.\u00a0 He wrote quite a bit about this subject.<\/p>\n<p><em>Or is God the God of the Jews only?<\/em> Paul asked.\u00a0 <em>Is he not the God of the Gentiles too?<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/18\/romans-part-17\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a> <em>Yes, of the Gentiles too! \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/12\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-4\/#_ftn16\">Since<\/a> God is one, he will justify<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaiwsei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u1f7d\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaiow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>) <em>the circumcised by faith<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) <em>and the uncircumcised through faith <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/12\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-4\/#_Table26\">Table<\/a>].<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/18\/romans-part-17\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It seemed to me that the Holy Spirit\u2019s intent would of necessity be something that both Paul and James described truthfully and accurately.\u00a0 Paul continued to preach justification by and through faith, James stressed works and that one was not justified by faith alone (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/mo.html#monon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03bf\u03bd\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_defensive\"><\/a>I recalled a story when Peter saw, what he thought was, a ghost walking on the water.\u00a0 <em>Have courage!\u00a0 It is I.\u00a0 Do not be afraid<\/em>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/18\/romans-part-17\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a> Jesus said.\u00a0 <em>Peter said to him, \u201cLord, if it is you, order me to come to you on the water.\u201d<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/18\/romans-part-17\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0I had heard the story since childhood, but for some reason as I was striving to obey God\u2019s law in my own strength it struck me what a dumb thing that was to say.\u00a0 Why would anyone in his right mind set himself up for that kind of failure?\u00a0 And just as I asked the question, the answer was right in front of me.\u00a0 Peter believed that Jesus\u2019 command would come to pass.\u00a0 If Jesus ordered him to walk on water, he would walk on water.\u00a0 It was a wonderful insight.\u00a0 I could turn back to Exodus 20 and read The Ten Promises as opposed to the ten commandments I was trying so hard to obey on my own, not to mention all of Jesus\u2019 other commandments.<\/p>\n<p>I went off sure that I understood everything now, found out again that I didn\u2019t, and then came back to this story.\u00a0 <em>So<\/em> [Jesus] <em>said, \u201cCome.\u201d\u00a0 Peter got out of the boat, walked on the water, and came<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/18\/romans-part-17\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a> <em>toward Jesus<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/18\/romans-part-17\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Peter may have had that kind of faith, I thought, obviously I did not.\u00a0 But even Peter didn\u2019t fare all that well, <em>when he saw the strong wind he became afraid.\u00a0 And starting to sink, he cried out, \u201cLord, save me!\u201d<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/18\/romans-part-17\/#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0So Peter, just like me, got all excited about faith and then made a fool out of himself.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_hope\"><\/a>Jesus wouldn\u2019t let me get away with that for very long.\u00a0 I heard a sermon about this story, not a sermon browbeating me to have more faith and stop doubting, a good one.\u00a0 When the preacher read the text\u2014<em>Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, \u201cYou of little faith, why did you doubt?\u201d<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/18\/romans-part-17\/#sdfootnote11sym\" name=\"sdfootnote11anc\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a>\u2014this preacher&#8217;s attention wasn\u2019t focused on Peter\u2019s failure but on Jesus\u2019 immediate help.\u00a0 Then he said the most revolutionary, life-changing thing I had heard to date, \u201cJesus had the faith to stand on the water and hold Peter up as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The preacher kept talking but I didn\u2019t hear any more that day.\u00a0 The sermon wasn\u2019t over for me, however.\u00a0 It had only just begun.\u00a0 \u201cYou weren\u2019t making fun of Peter, were you?\u201d I prayed.\u00a0 Then Jesus\u2019 question\u2014<em> why did you doubt?<\/em>\u2014became a real question, my question\u2014Why do I doubt?\u2014and it deserved a real answer.\u00a0 I don\u2019t recall how long it took to get to the bottom of that question, but finally the answer was fairly simple and obvious.\u00a0 I doubted because I was depending on my faith.\u00a0 My faith was pretty good at changing what I thought, but not so good at changing what I did, much less having any effect on the world beyond my mind.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_alone\"><\/a>That sounded pretty much like James\u2019 <em>faith alone<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/mo.html#monon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03bf\u03bd\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>).\u00a0 <em>So also faith<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>), <em>if it does not have works<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/er.html#erga\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03b1<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/er.html#ergon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>), <em>is dead<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ne.html#nekra\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bd\u03b5\u03ba\u03c1\u1f71<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ne.html#nekros\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bd\u03b5\u03ba\u03c1\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>) <em>being by itself<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/12\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-4\/#_ftn17\">uphold<\/a><\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/is.html#istanomen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f31\u03c3\u03c4\u1f71\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/is.html#isthmi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f35\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/is.html#istanw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f31\u03c3\u03c4\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>) [See <a by itself alone.\u00a0 My efforts to obey the law, my <em>works<\/em>\u00a0<em>of the law<\/em>, by my dead faith were meaningless.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_baseline\"><\/a>I danced around that conclusion for a long time because my religious mind had me convinced that if I acknowledged its truth I would be condemned, rather than that I would have learned something extremely valuable.\u00a0 <a id=\"_condemnation\"><\/a>It is no idle word that Paul proclaimed, <em>There is therefore now no condemnation <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/katak.html#katakrima\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>) <em>for those who are in <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/20\/psalm-22-part-5\/#_ftn27\">Christ Jesus<\/a><\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/18\/romans-part-17\/#sdfootnote14sym\" name=\"sdfootnote14anc\"><sup>14<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I want to call this the absolute baseline of faith in Jesus Christ.\u00a0 Apart from this faith no one can be honest enough to learn anything from the Lord or the Bible.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_faith\"><\/a>So if I can\u2019t depend on my faith, whose faith can I depend on?\u00a0 I hope the answer is obvious.\u00a0 I want to depend on Jesus\u2019 faith.\u00a0 He has the faith to stand on the water and hold Peter up as well.\u00a0 How can I have Jesus\u2019 faith?\u00a0 <em>But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness<\/em> (<a
