Forgiveness, Part 12"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Before David\u2019s men <em>marched out to\u2026fight against Israel\u2026in the forest of Ephraim<\/em>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/19\/davids-forgiveness-part-12\/#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> <em>The king gave this order to Joab, Abishai, and Ittai: \u201cFor my sake deal gently with the young man Absalom.\u201d Now the entire army was listening when the king gave all the leaders this order concerning Absalom<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/19\/davids-forgiveness-part-12\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Absalom and the army of Israel were defeated.\u00a0 Twenty thousand died; <em>the forest consumed more soldiers than the sword devoured that day<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/19\/davids-forgiveness-part-12\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Absalom\u2019s head was caught in the branches of a tree as his mule ran off without him.<\/p>\n<p>One of David\u2019s warriors reported this to Joab.\u00a0 <em>What!\u00a0 You saw this?<\/em>\u00a0 Joab responded incredulously.\u00a0 <em>Why didn\u2019t you strike him down right on the spot?\u00a0 I would have given you ten pieces of silver and a commemorative belt!<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/19\/davids-forgiveness-part-12\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0The warrior responded that he wouldn\u2019t disobey the King\u2019s order for a thousand pieces of silver.\u00a0 Perhaps Abishai or Ittai would have obeyed David\u2019s order.\u00a0 But Joab was the one who risked everything to bring Absalom back from exile.\u00a0 There was never any guarantee that David would respond good-naturedly to Joab\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/22\/davids-forgiveness-part-8\/\">lying actress<\/a>.\u00a0 It was <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/28\/davids-forgiveness-part-9\/\">Joab\u2019s barley<\/a> that Absalom burned.\u00a0 And it was Joab who put everything on the line again to get Absalom back in David\u2019s favor, from where Absalom <em>won the loyalty of the citizens of Israel<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/19\/davids-forgiveness-part-12\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a> and rebelled against his father.\u00a0 Joab had had enough (2 Samuel 18:14b-16 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>He took three spears in his hand and thrust them into the middle of Absalom while he was still alive in the middle of the oak tree. \u00a0Then ten soldiers who were Joab\u2019s armor bearers struck Absalom and finished him off.\u00a0 Then Joab blew the trumpet and the army turned back from chasing Israel, for Joab had called for the army to halt.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I can\u2019t tell if Absalom, retreating on his mule, outran his royal bodyguard or if all fifty men had already died or deserted him.\u00a0 But Absalom was alone and helpless when he faced Joab. \u00a0Later, when David was exhausted in battle with the Philistines and Ishbi-Benob would have killed him, <em>Abishai the son of Zeruiah came to David\u2019s aid, striking the Philistine down and killing him<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/19\/davids-forgiveness-part-12\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Abishai\u2019s loyalty was unwavering despite the fact that David publicly rebuked him on two occasions for his desire to kill Shimei.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/19\/davids-forgiveness-part-12\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Ever since David killed Goliath in single combat he inspired loyalty and even love<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/19\/davids-forgiveness-part-12\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a> in other fighting men, beginning with Saul\u2019s son Jonathan.\u00a0 And considering Jonathan\u2019s bravery in battle<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/19\/davids-forgiveness-part-12\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a> it seems almost providential that Goliath was left alive for David to fight and win a reputation.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/19\/davids-forgiveness-part-12\/#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Two runners brought news of the victory of David\u2019s warriors over Israel.\u00a0 David\u2019s first concern was for Absalom, <em>How is the young man Absalom?<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/19\/davids-forgiveness-part-12\/#sdfootnote11sym\" name=\"sdfootnote11anc\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The first runner didn\u2019t know.\u00a0 The second replied, <em>\u201cMay the enemies of my lord the king and all who have plotted against you be like that young man!\u201d \u00a0The king then became very upset.\u00a0 He went up to the upper room over the gate and wept.\u00a0 As he went he said, \u201cMy son, Absalom!\u00a0 My son, my son, Absalom!\u00a0 If only I could have died in your place!\u00a0 Absalom, my son, my son!\u201d<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/19\/davids-forgiveness-part-12\/#sdfootnote12sym\" name=\"sdfootnote12anc\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>So the victory of that day was turned to mourning as far as all the people were concerned.\u00a0 For the people heard on that day, \u201cThe king is grieved over his son.\u201d \u00a0That day the people stole away to go to the city the way people who are embarrassed steal away in fleeing from battle.<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/19\/davids-forgiveness-part-12\/#sdfootnote13sym\" name=\"sdfootnote13anc\"><sup>13<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Joab complained to David, <em>Today you have embarrassed all your servants who have saved your life this day, as well as the lives of your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your concubines. \u00a0You seem to love your enemies and hate your friends!<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/19\/davids-forgiveness-part-12\/#sdfootnote14sym\" name=\"sdfootnote14anc\"><sup>14<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0This wasn\u2019t quite accurate.\u00a0 David loved a son who became his enemy.\u00a0 He was still quite lethal to most of his enemies. \u00a0But I can\u2019t help but wonder what impact this story of the man after God\u2019s own heart had on one twelve-year-old boy, the true son of David who would build a house for the Lord\u2019s name.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/19\/davids-forgiveness-part-12\/#sdfootnote15sym\" name=\"sdfootnote15anc\"><sup>15<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Is this where he understood his Father\u2019s will (Matthew 5:43-45 NET)?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cYou have heard that it was said, \u2018<strong>Love your neighbor<\/strong>\u2019 and \u2018hate your <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/09\/30\/fear-deuteronomy-part-14\/#_ftn25\">enemy<\/a>.\u2019 \u00a0But I say to you, love your enemy and pray for <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/09\/30\/fear-deuteronomy-part-14\/#_ftn26\">those<\/a> who persecute you <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/09\/30\/fear-deuteronomy-part-14\/#_Table36\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>, so that you may be like your Father in <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/08\/13\/father-son-and-holy-spirit-part-3\/#_ftn8\">heaven<\/a>, since he causes the sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/08\/13\/father-son-and-holy-spirit-part-3\/#_Table39\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Is this where He understood that He, unlike David, could die in our place?<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_mnemonic\"><\/a>Though I called the Old Testament a <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/10\/jedidiah-part-4\/#_mnemonic\">mnemonic device<\/a> for the Lord Jesus, I\u2019m not sure how I feel about it.\u00a0 Yes, before He was born as Jesus I believe He placed these cues in Scripture for Himself.\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure that they triggered actual (electrical or chemical) memories so much as the faith to accept that He was the One who spoke to Moses, <em>I tell you the solemn truth, before Abraham came into existence, I am!<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/19\/davids-forgiveness-part-12\/#sdfootnote16sym\" name=\"sdfootnote16anc\"><sup>16<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Could God implant actual memories into the boy Jesus?\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Would that be cheating?\u00a0 I don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n<p>When David returned to Jerusalem he <em>took the ten concubines he had left to care for the palace and placed them under confinement<\/em> (<em>mi\u0161mere\u1e6f<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h4931\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05de\u05e9\u05de\u05e8\u05ea<\/a>).\u00a0 <em>Though he provided for their needs, he did not have sexual relations with them.\u00a0 They remained in confinement<\/em> (<em>\u1e63\u0101rar<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h6887\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05e6\u05e8\u05e8\u05d5\u05ea<\/a>) <em>until the day they died, living out the rest of their lives as widows<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/19\/davids-forgiveness-part-12\/#sdfootnote17sym\" name=\"sdfootnote17anc\"><sup>17<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Translating these two different Hebrew words as <em>confinement<\/em> (See <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/19\/davids-forgiveness-part-12\/#_Addendum\">Addendum<\/a> below) carries a kind of objective truth, but misses the nuance.<\/p>\n<p>King Saul had eighty-five priests and their families killed when he found out that Ahimelech, one of the priests, gave David bread to eat and Goliath\u2019s sword.\u00a0 Abiathar, Ahimelech\u2019s son, escaped to tell David, who said, <em>Stay with me.\u00a0 Don\u2019t be afraid!&#8230;You are secure<\/em> (<em>mi\u0161mere\u1e6f<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h4931\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05de\u05e9\u05de\u05e8\u05ea<\/a>) <em>with me<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/19\/davids-forgiveness-part-12\/#sdfootnote18sym\" name=\"sdfootnote18anc\"><sup>18<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This same Hebrew word was used for the protection lavished on the <em>perfect<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/19\/davids-forgiveness-part-12\/#sdfootnote19sym\" name=\"sdfootnote19anc\"><sup>19<\/sup><\/a> Passover lamb, <em>You must care<\/em> (<em>mi\u0161mere\u1e6f<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h4931\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05dc\u05de\u05e9\u05de\u05e8\u05ea<\/a>) <em>for it until the fourteenth day of this month..<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/19\/davids-forgiveness-part-12\/#sdfootnote20sym\" name=\"sdfootnote20anc\"><sup>20<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It was also used of the food prepared on Friday and <em>kept<\/em> (<em>mi\u0161mere\u1e6f<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h4931\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05dc\u05de\u05e9\u05de\u05e8\u05ea<\/a>) <em>until morning<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/19\/davids-forgiveness-part-12\/#sdfootnote21sym\" name=\"sdfootnote21anc\"><sup>21<\/sup><\/a> for eating on the Sabbath.\u00a0 So the first <em>confinement<\/em> of David\u2019s concubines was protection from execution, whether for treason or adultery, the more customary penalty for <em>cohabiting<\/em> with kings.<\/p>\n<p><em>I am terribly troubled<\/em> (<em>\u1e63\u0101rar<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h6887\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05e6\u05e8<\/a>)! Saul replied to Samuel\u2019s question, <em>Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up? <\/em>\u00a0The specific <em>trouble<\/em> Saul mentioned was that the<em> Philistines are fighting against me and God has turned away from me.<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/19\/davids-forgiveness-part-12\/#sdfootnote22sym\" name=\"sdfootnote22anc\"><sup>22<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0<em>I grieve<\/em> (<em>\u1e63\u0101rar<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h6887\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05e6\u05e8<\/a>) <em>over you, my brother Jonathan!<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/19\/davids-forgiveness-part-12\/#sdfootnote23sym\" name=\"sdfootnote23anc\"><sup>23<\/sup><\/a> David lamented after his friend\u2019s death in battle against the Philistines.\u00a0 So the second <em>confinement<\/em> is cognizant of the women\u2019s distress, neither married nor free to be married.<\/p>\n<p>I began the discussion of David\u2019s sin with a defensive invitation to imagine David as a <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/02\/jedidiah-part-2\/\">contemporary political figure<\/a> rather than a religious icon in a religious story.\u00a0 I was a bit embarrassed about God\u2019s forgiveness in this context.\u00a0 But now, after studying \u201cDavid\u2019s personal karma from the hand of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/17\/who-am-i-part-2\/#_Jesus\">Jesus<\/a>,\u201d and witnessing David\u2019s faithfulness throughout, I am no longer embarrassed.\u00a0 God will prevail for forgiving David if judged by me.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/19\/davids-forgiveness-part-12\/#sdfootnote24sym\" name=\"sdfootnote24anc\"><sup>24<\/sup><\/a> Have I made that case for the reader?<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s another matter entirely.\u00a0 The gulf between reading about someone knowing God and knowing God oneself might be unbridgeable.\u00a0 The best advice I received from <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/J._I._Packer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">J.I. Packer<\/a> in his book <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Knowing_God\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Knowing God<\/a><\/em> was to put his book down and pick up the Bible instead. And I pass that advice on to any readers of this blog.\u00a0 Stop reading this silly blog and begin to write your own.\u00a0 Mine is full of the idiosyncrasies of my personal struggle with sin and ignorance and unbelief.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll keep writing because I\u2019ll keep studying to know God.\u00a0 Writing keeps me honest about what I know and what I don\u2019t know, what I think, what I believe.\u00a0 And I need this record to help me remember where I\u2019ve been.\u00a0 The discipline of writing for a reader keeps me somewhat focused, more than my wandering mind apart from that
