regarding this matter?<\/em> Paul continued.\u00a0 <em>For if Abraham was declared righteous<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ed.html#edikaiwqh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u1f7d\u03b8\u03b7<\/a>, \u00a0a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaiow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>) <em>by the works<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/er.html#ergwn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03c9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/er.html#ergon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>) <em>of the law,<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/26\/romans-part-18\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a> <em>he has something to boast about \u2013 but not before God.<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/26\/romans-part-18\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> <em> For what does the scripture say? \u201c<strong>Abraham believed <\/strong><\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epist.html#episteuse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c5\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pisteuw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) <strong><em>God<\/em><\/strong><em>, <strong>and it was credited <\/strong><\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/elo.html#elogisqh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u1f77\u03c3\u03b8\u03b7<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/lo.html#logizomai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03af\u03b6\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) <strong><em>to him as righteousness <\/em><\/strong>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaiosunhn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c3\u1f7b\u03bd\u03b7\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaiosunh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c3\u03cd\u03bd\u03b7<\/a>).\u201d<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/26\/romans-part-18\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But James asked, <em>Was not Abraham our father justified<\/em> (\u1f10\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u1f7d\u03b8\u03b7, a form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03cc\u03c9) <em>by works<\/em> (\u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03c9\u03bd, a form of \u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd) <em>when he offered Isaac his son on the altar?<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/26\/romans-part-18\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jesus said, <em>the gate is narrow and the way is difficult that leads to life<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/26\/romans-part-18\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The gateway between Paul and James here is certainly narrow, and I for one have had a difficult time finding my way.\u00a0 But there is a pathway between them.\u00a0 It is found in the letter to the Hebrews, <em>By faith<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03a0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) <em>Abraham, when he was tested<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pei.html#peirazomenos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03b1\u03b6\u1f79\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pei.html#peirazw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>), <em>offered up Isaac<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/26\/romans-part-18\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The writer of Hebrews explained, <em>He had received the promises, yet he was ready to offer up his only son. \u00a0God had told him, <\/em>\u201c<strong><em>Through Isaac descendants will carry on your name<\/em><\/strong>,\u201d <em>and he reasoned<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/lo.html#logisamenos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03b9\u03c3\u1f71\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03af\u03b6\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9) <em>that God could even raise him from the dead<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/26\/romans-part-18\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Abraham\u2019s faith changed his thoughts and made him willing to sacrifice his son.\u00a0 An angel stopped him before he completed the deed, by the (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>So I think the answer to James\u2019 question is that Abraham was justified by a faith that produced the willingness to offer up Isaac on the altar.\u00a0 And this accords better with his point as he continued:\u00a0<em>You see that his faith<\/em> (\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2) <em>was working together<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sunh.html#sunhrgei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u1f75\u03c1\u03b3\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/suner.html#sunergew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03b5\u03c1\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) <em>with his works<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/er.html#ergois\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03bf\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd) <em>and his faith<\/em> (\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2) <em>was perfected<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/et.html#eteleiwqh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c4\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9\u1f7d\u03b8\u03b7<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/tel.html#teleiow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>) <em>by works<\/em> (\u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03c9\u03bd, a form of \u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd). \u00a0<em>And the scripture was fulfilled<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epl.html#eplhrwqh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u1f7d\u03b8\u03b7<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/plh.html#plhrow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>) <em>that says,<\/em> \u201c<strong><em>Now Abraham believed <\/em><\/strong>(\u1f10\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c5\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd, a form of \u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9) <strong><em>God and it was counted <\/em><\/strong>(\u1f10\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u1f77\u03c3\u03b8\u03b7, a form of \u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03af\u03b6\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9) <strong><em>to him for righteousness <\/em><\/strong>(\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c3\u1f7b\u03bd\u03b7\u03bd, a form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c3\u03cd\u03bd\u03b7),\u201d <em>and he was called God\u2019s friend<\/em>. \u00a0<em>You <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/01\/26\/who-am-i-part-12\/#_ftn30\">see<\/a> that a person is justified<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaioutai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03cc\u03c9) by <em>works<\/em> (\u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03c9\u03bd, a form of \u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd) <em>and not by faith<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2) <em>alone<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/mo.html#monon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u1f79\u03bd\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/mo.html#monos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03cc\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/01\/26\/who-am-i-part-12\/#_Table14\">Table<\/a>].<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/26\/romans-part-18\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And <em>by faith alone<\/em> (\u03b5\u03ba \u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2 \u03bc\u03bf\u03bd\u03bf\u03bd) James meant a faith that does not produce works, or acts of obedience.\u00a0 It is by James\u2019 own definition a dead faith, <em>faith<\/em> (\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2) <em>without works<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/26\/romans-part-18\/#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a> (\u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03c9\u03bd, a form of \u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd) <em>is dead<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ne.html#nekra\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bd\u03b5\u03ba\u03c1\u1f71<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ne.html#nekros\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bd\u03b5\u03ba\u03c1\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>).<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/26\/romans-part-18\/#sdfootnote11sym\" name=\"sdfootnote11anc\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_communal\"><\/a>James concern was for the poor.\u00a0 <em>If<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/26\/romans-part-18\/#sdfootnote12sym\" name=\"sdfootnote12anc\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a> <em>a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacks daily food, and one of you says to them, \u201cGo in peace, keep warm and eat well,\u201d but you do not give them what the body needs, what good is it?<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/26\/romans-part-18\/#sdfootnote13sym\" name=\"sdfootnote13anc\"><sup>13<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0The Jerusalem church had a communal economy.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/26\/romans-part-18\/#sdfootnote14sym\" name=\"sdfootnote14anc\"><sup>14<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The temptation to favor the rich was almost overwhelming.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/26\/romans-part-18\/#sdfootnote15sym\" name=\"sdfootnote15anc\"><sup>15<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The poor brought more mouths to feed; the rich brought the wherewithal to feed them, potentially.\u00a0 It is not too hard to imagine that the work of faith James most longed for was that those with private wealth would turn it over to church control.\u00a0 It is unfortunate, or perhaps divinely appointed, that James chose Abraham as his illustration, since <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/04\/romans-part-21\/\">God restrained Abraham<\/a> from bringing his faith to completion, or perfection, in this particular case.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/26\/romans-part-18\/#sdfootnote16sym\" name=\"sdfootnote16anc\"><sup>16<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_real\"><\/a>God was satisfied with the demonstration of Abraham\u2019s willingness to obey Him.\u00a0 And I think that was Paul\u2019s point, <em>that Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/26\/romans-part-18\/#sdfootnote17sym\" name=\"sdfootnote17anc\"><sup>17<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 What Abraham did, the acts he performed, are written for any to read.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/26\/romans-part-18\/#sdfootnote18sym\" name=\"sdfootnote18anc\"><sup>18<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Some would not measure up to righteousness by the works of the law as any Pharisee of Paul\u2019s day would understand it.\u00a0 But credited righteousness is real righteousness, the righteousness of God, freely given and meant to be spent freely on the <em>good works<\/em> (\u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03bf\u03b9\u03c2, another form of \u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd) <em>that God prepared beforehand<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/proh.html#prohtoimase\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03b7\u03c4\u03bf\u1f77\u03bc\u03b1\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/proe.html#proetoimazw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03b5\u03c4\u03bf\u03b9\u03bc\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>) <em>so we may do<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/perip.html#peripathswmen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03c0\u03b1\u03c4\u1f75\u03c3\u03c9\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/perip.html#peripatew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03c0\u03b1\u03c4\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) <em>them<\/em>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/26\/romans-part-18\/#sdfootnote19sym\" name=\"sdfootnote19anc\"><sup>19<\/sup><\/a> or <em>walk in them<\/em>, or <em>live them<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>And James wasn\u2019t wrong.\u00a0 Giving money was the first symptom I recognized in me of faith and righteousness.\u00a0 Money can be counted.\u00a0 I could see that as I gave more money I never lacked for what I needed or for more to give.\u00a0 That kept me going when other things looked bleak, until I could see my way clear to trust God with more weighty things, like righteousness.<\/p>\n<p>Paul continued, <em>Now to the one who works<\/em> (\u1f10\u03c1\u03b3\u03b1\u03b6\u03bf\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u1ff3, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/er.html#ergazomai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c1\u03b3\u03ac\u03b6\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>), <em>his pay is not credited<\/em> (\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u1f77\u03b6\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9, another form of \u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03af\u03b6\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9) <em>due to grace<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ca.html#carin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c7\u1f71\u03c1\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ca.html#caris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) <em>but due to obligation<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/26\/romans-part-18\/#sdfootnote20sym\" name=\"sdfootnote20anc\"><sup>20<\/sup><\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/of.html#ofeilhma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f40\u03c6\u03b5\u03af\u03bb\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>). \u00a0<em>But to the one who does not Bible I believed this verse.\u00a0 And I took it for granted that I would give an account for my sins, why I committed them and what I had done to make amends for them, and what I had done to stop committing them.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t until I compared the Greek words \u03bb\u1f79\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd (<em>an account<\/em>, as in <em>give an<\/em> <em>account<\/em>) and what is called its \u201cmiddle voice\u201d \u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u1f77\u03c3\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9 (<em>count<\/em>, as in <em>the Lord will never count sin<\/em>) that it dawned on me what Paul was saying:\u00a0 My sins were off the table, not open to discussion.\u00a0 Great!\u00a0 Now what do I do with myself?<\/p>\n<p>It didn\u2019t take too long after that to realize that my life was actually about knowing God from my perspective, and the absent-minded, insignificant kindnesses that overflowed from the righteousness of God that had been credited to me from God\u2019s perspective, just like Jesus said (Matthew 25:31-46 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When the Son of Man comes in his glory and all the angels<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/26\/romans-part-18\/#sdfootnote26sym\" name=\"sdfootnote26anc\"><sup>26<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. \u00a0All the nations will be assembled<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/26\/romans-part-18\/#sdfootnote27sym\" name=\"sdfootnote27anc\"><sup>27<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>before him, and he will separate<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. \u00a0For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/21\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-5\/#_ftn12\">visited<\/a> me <em>[<a
