The fulfillment of Nathan\u2019s prophesy<\/a>\u2014This is what the Lord says: \u2018I am about to bring disaster on you from inside your own household!\u00a0 Right before your eyes I will take your wives and hand them over to your companion.\u00a0 He will have sexual relations with your wives in broad daylight!<\/em>1<\/sup><\/a>\u2014was dependent on David\u2019s love and mercy for his sons, particularly Absalom.\u00a0 The fulfillment of this promise then was dependent on David\u2019s righteousness<\/em> in a word, on his being a man after God\u2019s own heart.\u00a0 And I use the word dependent<\/em> advisedly.\u00a0 I don\u2019t mean that God would have been unable to fulfill his promise if David, by punishing Amnon or executing Absalom, for instance, had actively attempted to thwart Him. \u00a0I mean simply that the Scripture presents me with a fact, David through love and mercy aided and abetted God in bringing disaster<\/em> on himself.<\/p>\n

And I am more convinced than ever that this particular concatenation of events cannot be construed as punishment for sin so much as the personal consequence of forgiveness.\u00a0 God knew David would behave this way.\u00a0 And, frankly, punishment for sin is more straightforward, less convoluted.\u00a0 When David inquired of the Lord<\/em> about a three year famine, the answer was simple, It is because of Saul and his bloodstained family, because he murdered the Gibeonites<\/em>.2<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Exactly when Saul murdered the Gibeonites is not obvious, unless they were among the victims killed at Nob by Doeg the Edomite.3<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Joshua swore an oath to<\/em> [the Gibeonites] in the name of the Lord God of Israel<\/em>,4<\/sup><\/a> and God honored that oath, one of mercy and compassion,5<\/sup><\/a> centuries later.\u00a0 David asked the Gibeonites, What can I do for you, and how can I make amends so that you will bless the Lord\u2019s inheritance?<\/em>6<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The Gibeonites demanded seven of Saul\u2019s male descendants<\/a>.\u00a0 The seven were executed and that year\u2019s harvest was apparently a good one<\/a>.\u00a0 Though this sounds strange to contemporary ears it was fully in keeping with the promise of the law: I, the Lord, your God, am a jealous God, responding to the transgression of fathers by dealing with children to the third and fourth generations of those who reject me..<\/em>.7<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 To paraphrase Paul a bit, Tell me, you who desire to be under the law, do you not hear the law?<\/em>8<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

I am persuaded, though I can\u2019t reconcile all the details, that the events I called \u201cDavid\u2019s personal karma from the hand of Jesus<\/a>,\u201d have something to do with God prevailing when he is judged,9<\/sup><\/a> and this has something to do with all things working together for good for those who love God,10<\/sup><\/a> and making sins as white as snow.11<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But does that mean that the believer in Jesus should expect a forgiven life something like David\u2019s, not in specific detail but general contour?\u00a0 Or has the Lord Jesus\u2019 sacrifice taken care of all that once for all?\u00a0 I have gone back and forth on this question many times.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Surely I hoped that trusting Jesus would lead to a life relatively free of suffering, that I would be healthy, wealthy and wise, so to speak.\u00a0 I realize now that hope was essentially Asaph\u2019s description of the lifestyle of the proud and wicked, when he envied those who are proud, as<\/em> [he] observed the prosperity of the wicked<\/em>12<\/sup><\/a> (See Addendum<\/a> below).<\/p>\n

For they suffer no pain; their bodies are strong and well-fed. \u00a0They are immune to the trouble common to men; they do not suffer as other men do. \u00a0Arrogance is their necklace, and violence their clothing. \u00a0Their prosperity causes them to do wrong; their thoughts are sinful. \u00a0They mock and say evil things; they proudly threaten violence. \u00a0They speak as if they rule in heaven, and lay claim to the earth. \u00a0Therefore they have more than enough food to eat, and even suck up the water of the sea.\u00a0 They say, \u201cHow does God know what we do?\u00a0 Is the sovereign one aware of what goes on?\u201d \u00a0Take a good look!\u00a0 This is what the wicked are like, those who always have it so easy and get richer and richer.13<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Paul didn\u2019t require ever increasing prosperity from the Lord as a basis for his faith: I have learned to be content in any circumstance. \u00a0I<\/em>14<\/sup><\/a> have experienced times of need and times of abundance. In any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of contentment, whether I go satisfied or hungry, have plenty or nothing. \u00a0I am able to do all things through the one<\/em>15<\/sup><\/a> who strengthens me<\/em>.16<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I recognize that this last verse is used to mean all sorts of things out of context but as I look at the Greek it seems to be saying something more like \u201cin all I am able in this that strengthens me.\u201d\u00a0 The ability is to be content<\/em> (\u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03ac\u03c1\u03ba\u03b7\u03c2<\/a>) in this case, and that<\/em> which strengthened Paul to that ability were the times of need <\/em>(\u03c4\u03b1\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c3\u03b8\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03c4\u03b1\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>) and times of abundance (\u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c3\u03b5\u03cd\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c3\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) he learned (\u1f14\u03bc\u03b1\u03b8\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03bc\u03b1\u03bd\u03b8\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>) from.<\/p>\n

<\/a>This is not to say that Paul didn\u2019t learn this contentment from Christ.\u00a0 Apart from Christ one is just as likely to learn a different lesson from need.\u00a0 \u201cIf I have to lie, steal, cheat or kill, as God is my witness, I\u2019ll never be hungry again,\u201d Scarlett O\u2019Hara<\/a> vowed dramatically before the intermission of the film Gone with the Wind<\/a>.\u00a0 When I was young and single after my first divorce I quit my job to study despite my Pastor\u2019s counsel that he couldn\u2019t see why anyone would give up a good job.\u00a0 Now that I\u2019m about the age he was when he said it, with two children in college, I relocated to keep my job (and my health insurance) despite the fact that I was cared for through all the years I had no permanent employment.\u00a0 So am I faithless or prudent?<\/p>\n

Let me add this as well.\u00a0 Before I moved my ex-wife called to say that she, our daughter and son, and her mother would prefer my presence over my money.\u00a0 In fact, her mother stated frankly that paying a child\u2019s college tuition is wrong; children should pay for it themselves.\u00a0 Still, I promised our children local college.\u00a0 So, am I behaving like Jephthah<\/a>, keeping my own word?\u00a0 I think these are the kinds of things Asaph meant when he wrote, I concluded, \u201cSurely in vain I have kept my motives pure and maintained a pure lifestyle.\u00a0 I suffer all day long, and am punished every morning.\u201d<\/em>17<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

The word translated punished<\/em> (t\u00f4\u1e35\u0113\u1e25\u00e2<\/em>, \u05d5\u05ea\u05d5\u05db\u05d7\u05ea\u05d9<\/a>) was more commonly translated rebuke(s)<\/em> or reproof<\/em> in the NET.\u00a0 It was translated argument(s)<\/em> in Job and Hosea.\u00a0 It was not translated in Psalm 39:11 (See Addendum<\/a> below) in the NET but was translated rebukes<\/em> in the NKJV: When with rebukes<\/em> (t\u00f4\u1e35\u0113\u1e25\u00e2<\/em>, \u05d1\u05ea\u05d5\u05db\u05d7\u05d5\u05ea) You correct<\/em> (y\u0101sar<\/em>, \u05d9\u05e1\u05e8\u05ea<\/a>) man for iniquity, You make his beauty melt away like a moth; Surely every man is vapor<\/em>.18<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It is not too hard to imagine beauty melting away as punishment.\u00a0 But from my perspective waiting for punishment wastes the short time one has to know God here and now.\u00a0 There is rebuke, reproof and argument in abundance for anyone who actively studies the Bible to know Him.<\/p>\n

Wisdom personified speaks in the Proverbs: If only you will respond to my rebuke, then I will pour out my thoughts to you and I will make my words known to you<\/em>.19<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But there are consequences for rejecting Wisdom: However, because I called but you refused to listen, because I stretched out my hand but no one paid attention, because you neglected all my advice, and did not comply with my rebuke, so I myself will laugh when disaster strikes you<\/em>\u202620<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Then they will call to me<\/em>, Wisdom continued, but I will not answer; they will diligently seek me, but they will not find me.\u00a0 Because they hated moral knowledge, and did not choose to fear the Lord, they did not comply with my advice, they spurned all my rebuke.\u00a0 Therefore they will eat from the fruit of their way, and they will be stuffed full of their own counsel.\u00a0 For the waywardness of the simpletons will kill them, and the careless ease of fools will destroy them<\/em> (See Addendum<\/a> below).21<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And despite what Asaph thought when his feet almost slipped<\/em>,22<\/sup><\/a> Wisdom concluded: But the one who listens to me will live in security, and will be at ease from the dread of harm<\/em>.23<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

The Proverbs have much more to say about rebuke<\/em> (translated punished<\/em> in Psalm 73:14 NET): My child, do not despise discipline from the Lord, and do not loathe his rebuke<\/em>.24<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 For the commandments are like a lamp, instruction is like a light, and rebukes of discipline are like the road leading to life<\/em>\u202625<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The one who heeds instruction is on the way to life, but the one who rejects rebuke goes astray<\/em>.26<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The one who loves discipline loves knowledge, but the one who hates reproof is stupid<\/em>.27<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The one who neglects discipline ends up in poverty and shame, but the one who accepts reproof is honored<\/em>.28<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 A fool rejects his father\u2019s discipline, but whoever heeds reproof shows good sense<\/em>.29<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The person who hears the reproof that leads to life is at home among the wise<\/em>.30<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The one who refuses correction despises himself, but whoever hears reproof acquires understanding<\/em>.31<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

There are warnings in Proverbs against rejecting rebuke<\/em> or reproof<\/em>: Severe discipline is for the one who abandons the way; the one who hates reproof will die <\/em>(See Addendum<\/a> below).32<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The one who stiffens his neck after numerous rebukes will suddenly be destroyed without remedy <\/em>(See Addendum<\/a> below).33<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This latter warning is similar to what ultimately comforted Asaph (Psalm 73:15-20a NET):<\/p>\n

If I had publicized these thoughts, I would have betrayed your loyal followers. \u00a0When I tried to make sense of this, it was troubling to me. \u00a0Then I entered the precincts of God\u2019s temple, and understood the destiny of the wicked. \u00a0Surely you put them in slippery places; you bring them down to ruin. \u00a0How desolate they become in a mere moment!\u00a0 Terrifying judgments make their demise complete! \u00a0They are like a dream after one wakes up.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Obviously I find it difficult to be comforted by this, but I wasn\u2019t socialized in Old Testament times.\u00a0 Exterminating the wicked inhabitants of the promised land and ruthlessly rooting out the sinner in their midst were major themes of Israel\u2019s socialization.\u00a0 Forgiveness of sin and sinners is the major theme of mine.\u00a0 It is Jesus who announced and demanded this age of forgiveness, and Jesus who expounded eternal punishment in a lake of fire or the outer darkness for rejecting it.\u00a0 The economy, if you will, has changed dramatically, making it much easier to forgive others.\u00a0 No matter how offended I am or how begrudgingly I cling to my grudge, it is no match for eternal punishment, and I forgive from my heart so that<\/em> [my] Father in heaven will also forgive<\/em> [me my] sins<\/em>.34<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

So I can assume that my life, trusting Jesus, will be filled with rebuke and security, reproof and ease from the dread of harm.\u00a0 And if I look back and examine my life since I trusted in Him I do find that it has been filled with rebuke and security, reproof and ease from the dread of harm.\u00a0 But still, I doubt sometimes and think if I only believed, I mean truly believed in Jesus, then that charmed existence I imagined before all of this began might be mine.\u00a0 Oh, yeah, well, you know, like Asaph described the proud and the wicked.<\/p>\n

The Greek word \u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03ac\u03c9 can mean \u201cto laugh at, mock, jeer\u201d or \u201cto laugh approvingly at (something).\u201d\u00a0 The Greek word \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03c7\u03b1\u03af\u03c1\u03c9 can mean \u201cto exult with malicious joy\u201d or \u201cto rejoice, to exult over.\u201d\u00a0 The choice will be determined by what the hearer believes about Jesus, the wisdom of God<\/em>.\u00a0 I\u2019m hearing the death and resurrection motif<\/a> again.<\/p>\n
