Jesus prayed (John 17:12b NET Table<\/a>):<\/p>\n

Not one of them was lost except the one destined for destruction, so that the scripture could be fulfilled.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Greek word translated lost <\/em>was \u1f00\u03c0\u03ce\u03bb\u03b5\u03c4\u03bf<\/a> (a form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03bb\u03bb\u03c5\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>).\u00a0 The middle voice can mean, \u201cto be destroyed, ruined; to perish, die; to be lost\u201d according to the Koine Greek Lexicon<\/a> online.\u00a0 The Greek word translated destruction <\/em>(KJV: perdition<\/em>) was \u1f00\u03c0\u03c9\u03bb\u03b5\u03af\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> (a form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03ce\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1<\/a>).\u00a0 It can mean \u201cdestruction, ruin\u201d up to and including \u201cdamnation, perdition\u201d or it can mean \u201closs (of property)\u201d or \u201c(something) lost\u201d according to the Koine Greek Lexicon<\/a> online.<\/p>\n

I plan to track these words through the New Testament and the Septuagint but I\u2019ll expose my bias here before proceeding. \u00a0I will be viewing forms of \u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03bb\u03bb\u03c5\u03bc\u03b9 and \u1f00\u03c0\u03ce\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1 through a powerful lens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Verse 8 above may refer to previous verses.\u00a0 I included it here because it addressed what follows to transgressors<\/em>, rebels<\/em>, those that have gone astray<\/em>\u2014people like I was.\u00a0 According to commentators<\/a> a ravenous bird from the east<\/em> referred to Cyrus<\/a>.\u00a0 I\u2019m more focused on the resolve with which it is stated: My counsel<\/em> (\u05e2\u05b2\u05e6\u05b8\u05ea\u05b4\u05a3\u05d9<\/a>) shall stand<\/em> (Tanakh); all my counsel<\/em> (\u03b2\u03bf\u03c5\u03bb\u1f74<\/a>) shall stand<\/em> (Septuagint Elpenor).<\/p>\n

Paul picked up this theme\u2014according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to the counsel <\/em>(\u03b2\u03bf\u03c5\u03bb\u1f74\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03b2\u03bf\u03c5\u03bb\u1f74<\/a>) of his will<\/em>[1]<\/sup><\/a>\u2014and expounded on it for believers in Ephesus (Ephesians 1:3-12 NET):<\/p>\n

It may not have been what He wanted, wished or hoped for, but I believed that a stubborn child could thwart Jesus’ Father in heaven.\u00a0 Of course, my whole life has been designed to prove me wrong.\u00a0 As I made the tables<\/a> to compare the Greek of the NET with that of the Stephanus Textus Receptus and Byzantine Majority Text I noticed a word in all three I couldn\u2019t account for in the English translations of the NET or KJV: \u1f14\u03bc\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>.\u00a0 I attempted a translation including \u1f14\u03bc\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He is not willing before<\/a> your Father in heaven that one of these little ones be lost; or, it is not the will in the sight of<\/a> your Father in heaven that one of these little ones be lost.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

As the sense of it sunk in tears and sobs erupted from me: not on his watch, Jesus had said of his Father.\u00a0 I needed some time to recover.\u00a0 When I returned to the study, recognizing that my knowledge of Greek is rudimentary at best, I looked online for some help. \u00a0I found Adam Clarke\u2019s<\/a> commentary on Matthew 18:14<\/a> instead.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is not the will of your Father – If any soul be finally lost, it is not because God’s will or counsel was against its salvation, or that a proper provision had not been made for it; but that, though light came into the world, it preferred darkness to light, because of its attachment to its evil deeds.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

From an image of God the Father, standing at his full stature, declaring, \u201cnot on my watch,\u201d to all rebellious children everywhere who had believed in Jesus, then a few hours later to witness this other image of God, seated, washing his hands, saying, \u201cI am innocent of the blood of all people,\u201d (which I believe, by the way: He is innocent of the blood of all people) was more than I could take. \u00a0The emotional whiplash did me in.\u00a0 I was done studying for the day.<\/p>\n

After a night\u2019s sleep and a day\u2019s drive it occurred to me to check if anyone had translated \u1f14\u03bc\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5\u03bd into English.\u00a0 I found one example on BibleHub<\/a>: so it is not will in presence of your Father who is in the heavens, that one of these little ones may perish<\/em>. [15]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Another was apparently translated from Aramaic rather than Greek: Just so, it is not the will before your Father who is in Heaven that one of these little ones should perish<\/em>.[16]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

So I can trust the leading of the Holy Spirit as I study the Bible or I can trust Adam Clarke.\u00a0 And there is no need to reject Adam Clarke completely, just one sentence he wrote. \u00a0In fact, I need only reject that one sentence as the true meaning of Matthew 18:14.\u00a0 The Wikipedia entry<\/a> for Adam Clarke didn\u2019t mention Greek among his many languages. \u00a0He may have written this sentence without knowing that \u1f14\u03bc\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5\u03bd was actually in the Greek text.<\/p>\n

Have I gone too far interpreting the effect of \u1f14\u03bc\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5\u03bd in this word string as \u201cnot on his watch\u201d?\u00a0 I don\u2019t know.\u00a0 I know the force of conviction with which it came.\u00a0 If I\u2019m wrong I trust that the Holy Spirit will guide<\/em> [me] into<\/em>[17]<\/sup><\/a> all truth<\/em>.[18]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 He will glorify me, <\/em>Jesus promised, because he will receive<\/em>[19]<\/sup><\/a> from me what is mine and will tell it to you. \u00a0Everything that the Father has is mine; that is why I said the Spirit will receive<\/em>[20]<\/sup><\/a> from me what is mine and will tell it to you<\/em>.[21]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Jesus told the following story about a father\u2019s love and mercy (Luke 15:11-24 NET):<\/p>\n

Then Jesus said, \u201cA man had two sons. \u00a0The younger of them said to his father, \u2018Father, give me the share of the estate that will belong to me.\u2019 \u00a0So[22]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> he divided his assets between them. \u00a0After a few days, the younger son gathered together all[23]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> he had and left on a journey to a distant country, and there he squandered his wealth with a wild lifestyle. \u00a0Then after he had spent everything, a severe[24]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> famine took place in that country, and he began to be in need. \u00a0So he went and worked for one of the citizens of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. \u00a0He was longing to eat[25]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> the carob pods the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything. \u00a0But when he came to his senses he said,[26]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> \u2018How many of my father\u2019s hired workers have food enough to spare,[27]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> but here[28]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> I am dying (\u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03bb\u03bb\u03c5\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03bb\u03bb\u03c5\u03bc\u03b9)<\/em> from hunger! \u00a0I will get up and go to my father and say to him, \u201cFather, I have sinned against heaven and against you. \u00a0I[29]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me like one of your hired workers.\u201d\u2019 \u00a0So he got up and went to his[30]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> father. \u00a0But while he was still a long way from home his father saw him, and his heart went out to him; he ran and hugged his son and kissed him. \u00a0Then his son said to him, \u2018Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you; I[31]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> am no longer worthy to be called your son.\u2019 \u00a0But the father said to his slaves, \u2018Hurry![32]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> \u00a0Bring the best robe, and put it on him! \u00a0Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet! \u00a0Bring[33]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> the fattened calf and kill it! \u00a0Let us eat and celebrate, because this son of mine was dead, and is alive again\u2014he was lost (\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03c9\u03bb\u1f7c\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03bb\u03bb\u03c5\u03bc\u03b9)<\/em> and is found!\u2019 \u00a0So they began to celebrate.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Jesus described what our Father\u2019s will is<\/em> as follows (John 6:38-40 NET Table<\/a>):<\/p>\n

For I have come down from<\/a> heaven not to do my own will (\u03b8\u03ad\u03bb\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1)<\/em> but the will (\u03b8\u03ad\u03bb\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1)<\/em> of the one who sent me. \u00a0Now this is the<\/a> will (\u03b8\u03ad\u03bb\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1)<\/em> of the one who sent me\u2014that I should not lose (\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03ad\u03c3\u03c9, another form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03bb\u03bb\u03c5\u03bc\u03b9)<\/em> one person of every one he has given me, but raise them all up at the last day. \u00a0For<\/a> this is the will (\u03b8\u03ad\u03bb\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1)<\/em> of my Father<\/a>\u2014for everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him to have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Greek word translated looks on<\/em> was \u03b8\u03b5\u03c9\u03c1\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a> (a form of \u03b8\u03b5\u03c9\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>).\u00a0 The one who believes in me does not believe in me<\/em>, Jesus said, but<\/em>[34]<\/sup><\/a> in the one who sent me, and the one who sees<\/em> (\u03b8\u03b5\u03c9\u03c1\u1ff6\u03bd, a form of \u03b8\u03b5\u03c9\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9) me sees<\/em> (\u03b8\u03b5\u03c9\u03c1\u03b5\u1fd6, another form of \u03b8\u03b5\u03c9\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9) the one who sent me. \u00a0I have come as a light into the world, so that everyone who believes in me should not remain in darkness<\/em>.[35]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Given my bias I\u2019m prompted to ask: did Jesus, knowing our Father\u2019s will as he prayed to Him, angrily\u2014or calmly and dispassionately\u2014condemn Judas Iscariot to an eternity in the lake of fire, declaring him the son of perdition<\/a><\/em>?\u00a0 Or did the One who used \u1f40\u03bb\u03b9\u03b3\u03cc\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u03b9<\/a> like a pet name<\/a> for his followers call Judas \u201cthe son of loss\u201d[36]<\/sup><\/a> (Table14<\/a> below)?<\/p>\n

Jesus\u2019 story of the loving and merciful father continued (Luke 15:25-30 NET):<\/p>\n

\u201cNow his older son was in the field. \u00a0As he came and approached the house, he heard music and dancing. \u00a0So he called one of the slaves[37]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> and asked what[38]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> was happening. \u00a0The slave replied, \u2018Your brother has returned, and your father has killed the fattened calf because he got his son back safe and sound.\u2019 \u00a0But the older son became angry and refused to go in. \u00a0His[39]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> father came out and appealed to him, but he answered his[40]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> father, \u2018Look! \u00a0These many years I have worked like a slave for you, and I never disobeyed your commands. \u00a0Yet you never gave me even a goat so that I could celebrate with my friends! \u00a0But when this son of yours came back, who has devoured your assets with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf[41]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> for him!\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Is it possible that those who translated \u1f41 \u03c5\u1f31\u1f78\u03c2 \u03c4\u1fc6\u03c2 \u1f00\u03c0\u03c9\u03bb\u03b5\u03af\u03b1\u03c2 the son of perdition <\/em>were as disgruntled about our Father\u2019s mercy as the older son <\/em>in Jesus’ parable, or as enamored with their own desires and exertions<\/a>?[42]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n
