For the promise to Abraham or to his descendants <\/em>[See Addendum<\/a> below] that he would inherit the world<\/em>1<\/sup><\/a> was not fulfilled through the law<\/em>,2<\/sup><\/a> Paul continued.\u00a0 In one sense this was absurdly obvious.\u00a0 God\u2019s law didn\u2019t even exist yet.\u00a0 The law that came four hundred thirty years later<\/em>, Paul wrote the Galatians about the promise to Abraham, does not cancel a covenant previously ratified by God,<\/em>3<\/sup><\/a> so as to invalidate the promise<\/em>.4<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But there is another sense to consider (Genesis 16:1, 2 NET).<\/p>\n

Now Sarai, Abram\u2019s wife, had not given birth to any children, but she had an Egyptian servant named Hagar. \u00a0So Sarai said to Abram, \u201cSince the Lord has prevented me from having children, have sexual relations with my servant.\u00a0 Perhaps I can have a family by her.\u201d\u00a0 Abram did what Sarai told him.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>I don\u2019t intend to guess at Sarai\u2019s motives, but she was acting according to law.\u00a0 It may have been a legal requirement according to the Nuzi tablets<\/a>.5<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 In the law of Hammurabi<\/a> 144:\u00a0 \u201cIf a man take a wife and this woman give her husband a maid-servant, and she bear him children, but this man wishes to take another wife, this shall not be permitted to him; he shall not take a second wife.\u201d6<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 There is some question of the dating of Hammurabi relative to Abram, but if Sarai predated Hammurabi\u2019s law it seems evident that she was aware of that which became his law. [Addendum<\/strong> 1\/15\/2025: See Exploration 6<\/em><\/a>]<\/p>\n

Sarai complained to Abram when Hagar became pregnant and despised her, You have brought this wrong on me!\u00a0 I allowed my servant to have sexual relations with you, but when she realized that she was pregnant, she despised me.\u00a0 May the Lord judge between you and me!<\/em>7<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0This complaint makes a bit more sense in light of Hammurabi\u2019s law<\/a> 146: \u201cIf a man take a wife and she give this man a maid-servant as wife and she bear him children, and then this maid assume equality with the wife: because she has borne him children her master shall not sell her for money, but he may keep her as a slave, reckoning her among the maid-servants.\u201d8<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It also illuminates the sagacity of Abram\u2019s decision not to exert authority over Sarai\u2019s slave, Since your servant is under your authority, do to her whatever you think best<\/em>.9<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Sarai treated Hagar harshly.\u00a0 Hagar ran away.\u00a0 Then the Lord\u2019s angel counseled her (Genesis 16:9-12 NET):<\/p>\n

Return to your mistress and submit to her authority. \u00a0I will greatly multiply your descendants\u2026so that they will be too numerous to count\u2026You are now pregnant and are about to give birth to a son.\u00a0 You are to name him Ishmael,10<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>for the Lord has heard your painful groans. \u00a0He will be a wild donkey of a man.\u00a0 He will be hostile to everyone, and everyone will be hostile to him.\u00a0 He will live away from his brothers.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Abram seemed perfectly content to accept Ishmael as the heir God promised, the son born to him by the law of Hammurabi (or the law that preceded the law of Hammurabi).\u00a0 When Abram was ninety-nine-years-old God changed his name to Abraham, meaning \u201cfather of a multitude.\u201d\u00a0 As for your wife<\/em>, He said, you must no longer call her Sarai; Sarah will be her name. \u00a0I will bless her and will give you a son through her.\u00a0 I will bless her and she will become a mother of nations.\u00a0 Kings of countries will come from her!<\/em>11<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Then Abraham bowed down with his face to the ground<\/em>,12<\/sup><\/a> but he laughed at God.\u00a0 Sarah was ninety-years-old.\u00a0 O that Ishmael might live before you!<\/em>13<\/sup><\/a> he said.\u00a0 God said (Genesis 17:19-21 NET):<\/p>\n

No, Sarah your wife is going to bear you a son, and you will name him Isaac [<\/em>he laughs]<\/em>.\u00a0 I will confirm my covenant with him as a perpetual covenant for his descendants after him. \u00a0As for Ishmael, I have heard you.\u00a0 I will indeed bless him, make him fruitful, and give him a multitude of descendants.\u00a0 He will become the father of twelve princes; I will make him into a great nation. \u00a0But I will establish my covenant with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you at this set time next year.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This was the context Paul considered as he wrote, For the promise to Abraham or to his descendants that he would inherit the world was not fulfilled through the law<\/em> (\u03bd\u1f79\u03bc\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>, a form of \u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>), not the Nuzi tablets nor the law code of Hammurabi, but through the righteousness<\/em> (\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c3\u1f7b\u03bd\u03b7\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c3\u03cd\u03bd\u03b7<\/a>) that comes by faith<\/em> (\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>),14<\/sup><\/a> God\u2019s credited righteousness.\u00a0 I have missed this many times before but \u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2 (faith<\/em>) at the end of Romans 4:13 (NET) is the same as \u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2 (faithfulness<\/em>) in Romans 3:26 (NET).\u00a0 It was God\u2019s faithfulness<\/em> that made the difference, not Abraham\u2019s faith<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

This was also to demonstrate<\/a> his righteousness in the present time, so that he would be just and the justifier of the one who lives because of Jesus\u2019 faithfulness (\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2).<\/td>\nFor the promise to Abraham or to his descendants that he would inherit the world was not fulfilled through the law, but through the righteousness that comes by faith (\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2).<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

The Lord had full confidence in his own credited righteousness to change Abraham, I have chosen him so that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just<\/em>.15<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 While Abraham\u2019s own faith at the time still relied on his initial strategy to preserve his life by claiming his beautiful wife was his sister, Because I thought, \u201cSurely no one fears God in this place.\u00a0 They will kill me because of my wife.\u201d<\/em>16<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 When God made me wander from my father\u2019s house, I told her, \u201cThis is what you can do to show your loyalty to me: Every place we go, say about me, \u2018He is my brother.\u2019\u201d<\/em>17<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

For if they become heirs by the law<\/em> (\u03bd\u1f79\u03bc\u03bf\u03c5, a form of \u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2), Paul continued, by their own efforts to keep laws, faith<\/em> (\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2) is empty<\/em> (\u03ba\u03b5\u03ba\u1f73\u03bd\u03c9\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03b5\u03bd\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>) and the promise<\/em> (\u1f10\u03c0\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) is nullified<\/em> (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1f75\u03c1\u03b3\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03c1\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>).18<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0It was the boy David who defeated Goliath19<\/sup><\/a> by the power of God.\u00a0 God would not allow Gideon to go to battle with 32,000 soldiers: You have too many men for me to hand Midian over to you.\u00a0 Israel might brag, \u201cOur own strength has delivered us.\u201d<\/em>20<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 God chose what is low and despised in the world<\/a>, what is regarded as nothing, to set aside <\/em>(\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03c1\u03b3\u1f75\u03c3\u1fc3<\/a>, another form of\u00a0\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03c1\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9) what is regarded as something, so that no one can boast in his<\/a> presence<\/em>,21<\/sup><\/a> Paul wrote the Corinthians.<\/p>\n

<\/a>For the law brings wrath<\/em>, Paul continued in Romans, because where there is no law there is no transgression either<\/em>.22<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 God didn\u2019t punish Abraham for pretending that Sarah was his sister.\u00a0 There was no law against that.\u00a0 On the contrary, the Lord struck Pharaoh and his household with severe diseases because of Sarai, Abram\u2019s wife<\/em>.23<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0God threatened Abimelech in a dream before he had the opportunity to take her, You are as good as dead because of the woman you have taken, for she is someone else\u2019s wife<\/em>.24<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Abraham made out like a pimp<\/a>: and<\/em> [Pharaoh] did treat Abram well on account of her.\u00a0 Abram received sheep and cattle, male donkeys, male servants, female servants, female donkeys, and camels<\/em>.25<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And, Abimelech gave sheep, cattle, and male and female servants to Abraham.\u00a0 He also gave his wife Sarah back to him. \u00a0Then Abimelech said, \u201cLook, my land is before you; live wherever you please.\u201d \u00a0To Sarah he said, \u201cLook, I have given a thousand pieces of silver to your \u2018brother.\u2019 \u00a0This is compensation for you so that you will stand vindicated before all who are with you.\u201d<\/em>26<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Obviously in these instances with Pharaoh and Abimelech none of this was due to Abraham\u2019s righteousness or his faith, but rather God\u2019s faithfulness to Abraham (Romans 4:16, 17 NET).<\/p>\n

For this reason it is by faith (\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2, a form of \u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2)<\/em> so that it may be by grace (\u03c7\u1f71\u03c1\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>),<\/em> with the result that the promise (\u1f10\u03c0\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03c0\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03af\u03b1)<\/em> may be certain to all the descendants \u2013 not only to those who are under the law (\u03bd\u1f79\u03bc\u03bf\u03c5, a form of \u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2),<\/em> but also to those who have the faith (\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2, a form of \u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2)<\/em> of Abraham, who is the father of us all (as it is written, \u201cI have made you the father of many nations<\/strong>\u201d [See Addendum<\/a> below]<\/em>). \u00a0He is our father in the presence of God whom he believed (\u1f10\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c5\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em>\u2013 the God who makes the dead alive and summons the things that do not yet exist as though they already do.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Perhaps Paul said all of this more succinctly in his letter to the young preacher Timothy, I know whom I have believed <\/em>(\u03c0\u03b5\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c5\u03ba\u03b1<\/a>, another form of \u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9) and am persuaded<\/em> (\u03c0\u1f73\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c3\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03c9<\/a>) that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day<\/em>.27<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The emphasis is on Him who is believed rather than the faith of the believer.<\/p>\n
