He will keep the feet of His holy ones<\/em>, Hannah\u2019s prayer continued, but the wicked shall be put to silence in darkness; for not by strength shall man prevail<\/em>.[1]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Only the third clause gets any corroboration from the Septuagint.\u00a0 I\u2019ll examine the first two clauses in detail using Morfix<\/a> online.<\/p>\n

Morfix translates contemporary Hebrew, not necessarily or exclusively biblical Hebrew, but it\u2019s the online source I\u2019ve found to begin to get a handle on Hebrew homographs<\/a>.\u00a0 I copied the Hebrew word from the Engish\/Hebrew Tanakh<\/a> on Chabad.org<\/a>. \u00a0If I got no result when I pasted it into Morfix I tried the same word (without vowel points) from the NET<\/a> parallel Hebrew.\u00a0 (I\u2019m assuming for the moment the failure has something to do with the way my copy\/paste function handles vowel points.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

There doesn\u2019t appear to be any way to derive granting his petition to him that prays<\/em> from Hebrew homographs of the Masoretic text.\u00a0 I note that He will keep the feet of His holy ones <\/em>might be considered a more general analog relative to the specificity of granting his petition to him that prays <\/em>to Hannah\u2019s own circumstance (1 Samuel 1:10-20<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Again, it doesn\u2019t seem possible to derive and he blesses the years of the righteous<\/em> from homographs of the Hebrew of the Masoretic text.\u00a0 I note that but the wicked shall be put to silence in darkness <\/em>is the logical inverse of and he blesses the years of the righteous<\/em>, contrasting the death of the wicked to the life of the righteous.\u00a0 Someone made a deliberate change, but whom?<\/p>\n

He lifts up the poor from the earth, and raises the needy from the dunghill; to seat him with the princes of the people, and causing them to inherit the throne of glory <\/em>(Table<\/a>): granting his petition to him that prays; and he blesses the years of the righteous, for by strength cannot man prevail <\/em>(Table<\/a>).[3]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This certainly directs my thoughts to Jesus, specifically his petition<\/em>: Father, forgive them, for they don\u2019t know what they are doing<\/em>.[4]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

The same verses from the Masoretic text, not so much: He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, He lifteth up the needy from the dung-hill, to make them sit with princes, and inherit the throne of glory; for the pillars of the earth are HaShem’S, and He hath set the world upon them <\/em>(Table<\/a>). He will keep the feet of His holy ones, but the wicked shall be put to silence in darkness; for not by strength shall man prevail <\/em>(Table<\/a>).[5]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

When I consider that the Masoretes\u2019 attempt \u201cto decipher the authentic word of God and eliminate the dissimilarities\u201d of the \u201cmany disparities of the Torah [that] emerged as countless scribes wrote numerous scrolls\u201d was guided by \u201ctheir ultimate goal\u2026to uphold the traditions of the Jewish people,\u201d[6]<\/sup><\/a> I think the Septuagint may be more original here.\u00a0 The translation\u2014but the wicked shall be put to silence in darkness<\/em>\u2014is somewhat clever.\u00a0 But it scarcely hides the Masoretes\u2019 profound wish that the wicked shall be cut off in darkness<\/em>,[7]<\/sup><\/a> if the wicked <\/em>are understood as those pesky believers who kept finding Jesus in the Hebrew Scriptures.\u00a0 As such, it provides a tacit acknowledgement that petition <\/em>was original here, a petition that was not being granted even as Hannah asserted that the Lord is granting his petition to him that prays<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Morfix wasn\u2019t much help for an understanding of \u05d9\u05b5\u05d7\u05b7\u05a3\u05ea\u05bc\u05d5\u05bc (shall be broken to pieces<\/em>).\u00a0 I copied and pasted the form \u05d7\u05b8\u05ea\u05b7\u05ea<\/a> from Strong\u2019s Concordance and Morfix came up with \u201c(literary) fear, terror.\u201d\u00a0 Strong\u2019s definition of \u05d7\u05b8\u05ea\u05b7\u05ea (ch\u00e2thath<\/em>) reads: \u201cA primitive root; properly to prostrate<\/em>; hence to break down<\/em>, either (literally) by violence, or (figuratively) by confusion and fear.\u201d\u00a0 And the NET reads: \u201c1) to go down, descend 1a) (Qal) 1a1) to go down, descend 1a2) to descend, descend into (chastisement) (fig.) 1b) (Niphal) to come down into, penetrate 1c) (Piel) to cause to descend, press down, stretch (a bow) 1d) (Hiphil) to bring down.\u201d<\/p>\n

Moses said: Behold, HaShem thy G-d hath set the land before thee; go up, take possession <\/em>(Hebrews 3:7-4:11<\/a>), as HaShem, the G-d of thy fathers, hath spoken unto thee; fear not, neither be dismayed<\/em>[10]<\/sup><\/a> (\u05ea\u05b5\u05bc\u05d7\u05b8\u05bd\u05ea).\u00a0 But the rabbis\u2019 chose \u03b4\u03b5\u03b9\u03bb\u03b9\u03ac\u03c3\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5<\/a> (a form of \u03b4\u03b5\u03b9\u03bb\u03b9\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>: to be afraid, fear, be fearful; to be timid, be cowardly) in this context rather than \u1f00\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5\u03bd\u1fc6<\/a> (a form of \u1f00\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5\u03bd\u03ae\u03c2<\/a>: weak, powerless; weak and easily defeated; sick, ill, unhealthy; physically weak, feeble, miserable; morally weak; weak in influence, without influence; structurally weak {e.g., weak stones unable to support}).<\/p>\n

As I meditate on the meaning of these words I can\u2019t help but recall Paul\u2019s letter to believers in Philippi (Philippians 2:5-11 NET):<\/p>\n

You should have the same attitude[11]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> toward one another that Christ Jesus had, who though he existed in the form of God did not regard equality with God as something to be grasped<\/a>, but[12]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> emptied himself by taking on the form of a slave, by looking like other men, and by sharing in human nature. \u00a0He humbled himself, by becoming obedient to the point of death\u2014even death on a cross! \u00a0As a result God highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow\u2014in heaven and on earth and under the earth\u2014and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

To an unbeliever this is a dreadful fate reserved for one\u2019s worst enemies.\u00a0 To a believer this is the wisdom and power<\/a> of God unto salvation<\/a> as He transfigures his adversary (\u1f00\u03bd\u03c4\u03af\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>), <\/em>one adversary at a time into his sons<\/a>.\u00a0 Again, Paul wrote to believers in Corinth (2 Corinthians 12:9, 10 NET):<\/p>\n

Frankly, David\u2019s words haven\u2019t helped me distinguish whether the Masoretes were discomforted by They that strive with HaShem shall be broken to pieces <\/em>and removed the Lord<\/em> [is] holy<\/em>, or whether the rabbis who translated The Lord will weaken his adversary<\/em> felt that the Lord<\/em> [is] holy <\/em>was needed as an editorial comment.\u00a0 Perhaps it\u2019s here to remind me what it\u2019s like when the Masoretic text and Septuagint are in agreement before I move on.\u00a0 Hannah\u2019s prayer continued in the Septuagint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

I lean toward the idea that these words were removed by the Masoretes.\u00a0 Translators have a different mission entirely: \u201cWe added a couple of cleverly edited verses from Jeremiah to make it appear that these concepts were prayed by a woman centuries earlier,\u201d is not really part of a translator\u2019s job description.\u00a0 The Masoretes\u2019 \u201cultimate goal\u2026to uphold the traditions of the Jewish people,\u201d \u201cto decipher the authentic word of God and eliminate the dissimilarities\u201d of the \u201cmany disparities of the Torah\u201d[17]<\/sup><\/a> seems more promising.\u00a0 Jeremiah continued:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

In Hannah\u2019s prayer the ones who boast to understand and know the Lord and to execute justice and righteousness in the midst of the land <\/em>were apparently descendants of Israel.\u00a0 In the reprise of these concepts in Jeremiah\u2019s prophecy it is more doubtful that they possessed the understanding and knowing that I am the Lord that exercise mercy, and judgment, and righteousness, upon the earth; for in these things is my pleasure, saith the Lord<\/em>.\u00a0 So if deleting one or the other was the order of the day, why not delete the instance in Jeremiah?<\/p>\n

Jeremiah\u2019s prophecy has come to pass.\u00a0 It is an indelible part of Israel\u2019s history.\u00a0 Hannah\u2019s prayer is not yet fulfilled, and won\u2019t be until descendants of Israel in Jerusalem say, Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!<\/em>[18]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m not sure how early \u201cto annoy, to irritate, to get someone’s goat\u201d became a colloquial meaning of \u05d3\u05b8\u05bc\u05e7\u05b7\u05e8, but it does help to explain the rabbis\u2019 choice \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03c9\u03c1\u03c7\u03ae\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf<\/a>: \u201cto mock; to dance in triumph over; to treat spitefully\u201d according to the Koine Greek Lexicon<\/a>.\u00a0 From \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03c9\u03c1\u03c7\u03ae\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf it\u2019s not too hard to see how English translators of the Elpenor Septuagint with a Christian bias chose they have mocked <\/em>while the BLB had the more Jewish interpretation: \u201cthey have danced triumphantly.\u201d\u00a0 As I wrote in another essay<\/a>: \u201cThe translators of the Septuagint couldn\u2019t imagine a scenario in which ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>(\u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4) could be pierced<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 At least this verse of the Septuagint was not a hoax<\/a> perpetrated by lying Christian apologists.[19]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

I\u2019ll offer one more insight from doing the study for this essay: The Hexapla<\/a> with six versions side by side doesn\u2019t seem to me like the most opportune moment to introduce a \u201cforged\u201d version of Hannah\u2019s prayer by manipulating two well known verses from Jeremiah (1 Corinthians 1:18-31<\/a>) and inserting them into the text of the Septuagint.\u00a0 I would assume then that this portion of Hannah\u2019s prayer predates Origen\u2019s<\/a> Hexapla.<\/p>\n
