rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bb\u03c0\u03af\u03c2<\/a>) <em>Abraham believed<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epist.html#episteuse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c5\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pisteuw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) <em>in hope<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/elp.html#elpidi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bb\u03c0\u1f77\u03b4\u03b9<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/elp.html#elpis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bb\u03c0\u03af\u03c2<\/a>),<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/04\/romans-part-21\/#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> Paul continued.\u00a0 At ninety-nine-years old Abraham had plenty of empirical proof that his wife Sarah could not have a child.\u00a0 He had no reason to hope in any natural sense of the word (i.e., <em>against hope<\/em>).\u00a0 But Paul had this to say about <em>hope<\/em> in the next chapter (Romans 5:3, 4 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Not only this, but we also rejoice in sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/upom.html#upomonhn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f51\u03c0\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bd\u1f74\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/upom.html#upomonh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f51\u03c0\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bd\u03ae<\/a>), <\/em>and endurance <em>(\u1f51\u03c0\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bd\u1f74),<\/em> character, and character, hope <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/elp.html#elpida\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bb\u03c0\u1f77\u03b4\u03b1<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/elp.html#elpis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bb\u03c0\u03af\u03c2<\/a>). \u00a0<\/em>And hope <em>(\u1f10\u03bb\u03c0\u1f76\u03c2)<\/em> does not disappoint, because the love <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/agap.html#agaph\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>) <\/em>of God has been poured out in our hearts through the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/category\/introduction\/holy-spirit\/\">Holy Spirit<\/a> who was given to us.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Now <em>suffering<\/em> in and of itself does not necessarily produce <em>endurance<\/em> in a person, and <em>endurance<\/em> in and of itself does not necessarily produce godly <em>character<\/em>.\u00a0 The reason <em>suffering<\/em> produces <em>endurance<\/em> and <em>endurance<\/em>, godly <em>character<\/em> and godly <em>character<\/em>, <em>hope<\/em> is God\u2019s <em>love<\/em> poured out in the heart of a man or woman.\u00a0 This is the love that <em>bears all things,<\/em> <em>believes <\/em>(<a href=\"pisteuei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u1f7b\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pisteuw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) <em>all things, hopes<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/elp.html#elpizei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bb\u03c0\u1f77\u03b6\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/elp.html#elpizw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bb\u03c0\u03af\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>) <em>all things,<\/em> <em>endures <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/upom.html#upomenei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f51\u03c0\u03bf\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/upom.html#upomenw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f51\u03c0\u03bf\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>) <em>all things<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/04\/romans-part-21\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And so Abraham believed in God <em>in hope<\/em>, rather than believing <em>in hope<\/em> itself.\u00a0 This is clearer in verse 21, <em>He was fully convinced that what God promised<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/eph.html#ephggeltai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u1f75\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epag.html#epaggellw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03ad\u03bb\u03bb\u03c9<\/a>) <em>he was also able to do <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/poi.html#poihsai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u1fc6\u03c3\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/poi.html#poiew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>).<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/04\/romans-part-21\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The result for Abraham of believing God in hope against hope was <em>that he became<\/em> <strong><em>the<\/em> <em>father of many nations<\/em><\/strong> <em>according to the pronouncement,<\/em> \u201c<strong><em>so will your descendants be<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/04\/romans-part-21\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 What follows is a special revelation: <em>Without being weak in faith <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>)<em>, he <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/07\/davids-forgiveness-part-4\/#sdfootnote7sym\">considered<\/a> his own body as <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/07\/davids-forgiveness-part-4\/#sdfootnote8sym\">dead<\/a> (because he was about one hundred years old) and the deadness of Sarah\u2019s womb <\/em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/07\/davids-forgiveness-part-4\/#_Table7\">Table<\/a>]<em>. \u00a0He did not waver in unbelief<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/api.html#apistia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) <em>about the promise<\/em>\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epag.html#epaggelian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epag.html#epaggelia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) <em>of God but was strengthened<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ene.html#enedunamwqh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bd\u03b5\u03b4\u03c5\u03bd\u03b1\u03bc\u1f7d\u03b8\u03b7<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/end.html#endunamow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bd\u03b4\u03c5\u03bd\u03b1\u03bc\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>) <em>in faith<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>), <em>giving glory to God<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/04\/romans-part-21\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>From the time God confirmed that Abraham would have a son by Sarah in Genesis 17:19-22 until Isaac was born in Genesis 21:1-5 there is nothing in the narrative that helps me see that this<em> faith <\/em>Paul revealed in Romans 4:19 and 20 was <em>working together with <\/em>Abraham\u2019s<em> works<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/04\/romans-part-21\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 In fact, I\u2019m not even able to imagine what <em>works<\/em> Abraham could have done to indicate that <em>he was fully convinced that what God promised he was also able to do<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/04\/romans-part-21\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a> in reference to Sarah having a son.<\/p>\n<p>This particular aspect of Abraham\u2019s faith is a good object lesson for Paul\u2019s declaration to the Corinthians: <em>So then, do not judge anything before the time.\u00a0 Wait until the Lord comes.\u00a0 He will bring to light the hidden things of darkness and reveal the motives of hearts.\u00a0 Then each will receive recognition from God<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/04\/romans-part-21\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Apart from the Lord\u2019s revelation of Abraham\u2019s heart through Paul I would not know this particular aspect of Abraham\u2019s faith from reading Genesis alone.\u00a0 There is, however, a story where I can see the outworking of Abraham\u2019s credited righteousness, and his faith working together with his works, as James highlighted in his letter.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/04\/romans-part-21\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 In the letter to the Hebrews more of Abraham\u2019s heart was revealed (Hebrews 11:17-19 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>By faith <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03a0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> Abraham, when he was tested <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pei.html#peirazomenos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03b1\u03b6\u1f79\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pei.html#peirazw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>), <\/em>offered up Isaac.\u00a0 He had received the promises <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epag.html#epaggelias\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epag.html#epaggelia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03af\u03b1<\/a>),<\/em> yet he was ready to offer up his only son. \u00a0God had told him, \u201c<strong><em>Through Isaac descendants will carry on your name<\/em><\/strong>,\u201d and he reasoned <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/lo.html#logisamenos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03b9\u03c3\u1f71\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/lo.html#logizomai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03af\u03b6\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) <\/em>that God could even raise him from the dead, and in a sense he received him back from there.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>God said to Abraham, <em>Take your son \u2013 your only son, whom you love, Isaac \u2013 and go to the land of Moriah!\u00a0 Offer him up there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains which I will indicate to you<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/04\/romans-part-21\/#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The first <em>work<\/em> I see working together with Abraham\u2019s revealed faith that God could even raise Isaac from the dead is more Zen than Hebrew, a <em>not-work<\/em>, if you will.\u00a0 There are no <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_C._Scott\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">George C. Scott<\/a> histrionics from the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Huston\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Huston<\/a> film <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Bible:_In_the_Beginning...\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Bible<\/a>, an aesthetic choice presumably to make Abraham more believable to unbelievers.\u00a0 <em>Early in the morning Abraham got up and saddled his donkey.\u00a0 He took two of his young servants with him, along with his son Isaac.\u00a0 When he had cut the wood for the burnt offering, he started out for the place God had spoken to him about<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/04\/romans-part-21\/#sdfootnote11sym\" name=\"sdfootnote11anc\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The next <em>work<\/em> I see working together with Abraham\u2019s revealed faith that God could even raise Isaac from the dead is Abraham\u2019s answer to Isaac\u2019s question, where is the lamb?\u00a0 <em>\u201cGod will provide for himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son,\u201d Abraham replied.\u00a0 The two of them continued on together<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/04\/romans-part-21\/#sdfootnote12sym\" name=\"sdfootnote12anc\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And the final <em>work<\/em> is that mentioned by James (Genesis 22:9, 10 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When they came to the place God had told him about, Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood on it.\u00a0 Next he tied up his son Isaac and placed him on the altar on top of the wood. \u00a0Then Abraham reached out his hand, took the knife, and prepared to slaughter his son.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>But the Lord\u2019s angel called to him from heaven\u2026\u201cDo not harm the boy!&#8230;Do not do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God because you did not withhold your son, your only son, from me<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/04\/romans-part-21\/#sdfootnote13sym\" name=\"sdfootnote13anc\"><sup>13<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Then Abraham\u2019s prophetic word to Isaac was fulfilled.\u00a0 <em>Abraham looked up and saw behind him a ram caught in the bushes by its horns.\u00a0 So he went over and got the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/04\/romans-part-21\/#sdfootnote14sym\" name=\"sdfootnote14anc\"><sup>14<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Abraham <em>was fully convinced that what God promised<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/eph.html#ephggeltai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u1f75\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epag.html#epaggellw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03ad\u03bb\u03bb\u03c9<\/a>) <em>he was also able to do<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/poi.html#poihsai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u1fc6\u03c3\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/poi.html#poiew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>), Paul wrote the Romans. \u00a0<em>So indeed it was credited<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/elo.html#elogisqh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u1f77\u03c3\u03b8\u03b7<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/lo.html#logizomai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03af\u03b6\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) <em>to Abraham as righteousness<\/em> (\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c3\u1f7b\u03bd\u03b7\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaiosunh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c3\u03cd\u03bd\u03b7<\/a>).<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/04\/romans-part-21\/#sdfootnote15sym\" name=\"sdfootnote15anc\"><sup>15<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Paul\u2019s interest was not merely historical, <em>the statement<strong> it was credited <\/strong><\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/elo.html#elogisqh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u1f77\u03c3\u03b8\u03b7<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/lo.html#logizomai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03af\u03b6\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) <strong><em>to him<\/em><\/strong> <em>was not written only for Abraham\u2019s sake, but also for our sake, to whom it
