On Pentecost Peter continued his quotation from the prophet Joel (Acts 2:20 NET Table<\/a>):<\/p>\n

The sun will be changed to darkness and the moon to blood before the great and glorious day<\/a> of the Lord comes<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

He may have had Jesus\u2019 crucifixion in mind for \u1f41 \u1f25\u03bb\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2 \u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03c3\u03c4\u03c1\u03b1\u03c6\u1f75\u03c3\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9 \u03b5\u1f30\u03c2 \u03c3\u03ba\u1f79\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2 (The sun will be changed to darkness<\/em>).\u00a0 Now from noon until three,<\/em>[1]<\/sup><\/a> darkness<\/em> (\u03c3\u03ba\u1f79\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2) came over all the land<\/em>.[2]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Mark also recorded: Now<\/em>[3]<\/sup><\/a> when it was noon, darkness<\/em> (\u03c3\u03ba\u1f79\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2) came over the whole land until three<\/em>[4]<\/sup><\/a> in the afternoon<\/em>.[5]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Luke mentioned the sun as well as the darkness<\/em>\u00a0(Luke 23:44, 45a NET):<\/p>\n

It[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> was now[7]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> about noon, and darkness (\u03c3\u03ba\u1f79\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2)<\/em> came over the whole land until three[8]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> in the afternoon, because[9]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> the sun\u2019s light[10]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> failed.[11]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The English translations in the KJV are quite similar: The sun shall be turned into darkness<\/em>; And the sun was darkened<\/em>.\u00a0 But the Greek seems different (Table25<\/a> below).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

The Hebrew word \u05d5\u05b0\u05d4\u05b7\u05e0\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05e8\u05b8\u05bd\u05d0 is a form of the word I\u2019ve been tracking through the essays categorized under The Fear of the Lord<\/a>.\u00a0 Morfix<\/a> came up with: \u05e0\u05d5\u05b9\u05e8\u05b8\u05d0 \u201cterrible, terrifying, horrible, awful; (colloquial) very bad, insufferable; awe-inspiring, awesome (God).\u201d\u00a0 But the rabbis chose \u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03c6\u03b1\u03bd\u1fc6<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03c6\u03b1\u03bd\u03ae\u03c2<\/a>: \u201cnotable, distinguished, famous, splendid, glorious, remarkable; evident, visually manifest, conspicuous; renowned.\u201d\u00a0 The only other occurrence[12]<\/sup><\/a> of \u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03c6\u03b1\u03bd\u1fc6 was near the end of Malachi. \u00a0I\u2019ll consider the passage verse by verse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Morfix didn\u2019t recognize \u05d5\u05bc\u05e4\u05b4\u05e9\u05c1\u05b0\u05ea\u05bc\u05b6\u0596\u05dd, translated and grow up<\/em> in the Tanakh, but the rabbis chose \u03c3\u03ba\u03b9\u03c1\u03c4\u1f75\u03c3\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u03c3\u03ba\u03b9\u03c1\u03c4\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>: \u201cto jump, leap (for joy); to kick (i.e., fetus quickening)\u201d, translated leap <\/em>or bound <\/em>in the Septuagint.<\/p>\n

But the day of the Lord will come like a thief<\/em>,[15]<\/sup><\/a> Peter continued in his letter (2 Peter 3:10-13 NET):<\/p>\n
