target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>) <em>by faith<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>), <em>we have peace<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/eir.html#eirhnhn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b5\u1f30\u03c1\u1f75\u03bd\u03b7\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/eir.html#eirhnh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b5\u1f30\u03c1\u03ae\u03bd\u03b7<\/a>) <em>with God through our Lord Jesus Christ<\/em>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/06\/romans-part-22\/#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> Paul continued.\u00a0 Jesus said, <em>When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his possessions are safe<\/em> (\u1f10\u03bd \u03b5\u1f30\u03c1\u1f75\u03bd\u1fc3; literally, &#8220;in peace&#8221;).<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/06\/romans-part-22\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I take that to mean that one aspect of \u03b5\u1f30\u03c1\u1f75\u03bd\u03b7\u03bd\u00a0with God is <em>security<\/em> or <em>safety<\/em>.\u00a0 The word also meant the typical cessation of hostilities.\u00a0 Jesus described a king going to battle, realizing he will not succeed, <em>he will send a representative while the other is still a long way off and ask for terms of peace<\/em> (\u03b5\u1f30\u03c1\u1f75\u03bd\u03b7\u03bd, a form of \u03b5\u1f30\u03c1\u03ae\u03bd\u03b7).<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/06\/romans-part-22\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But Jesus took great pains to warn his followers what peace with God was not (Luke 12:51-53 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Do you think I have come to bring peace <em>(\u03b5\u1f30\u03c1\u1f75\u03bd\u03b7\u03bd, a form of \u03b5\u1f30\u03c1\u03ae\u03bd\u03b7)<\/em> on earth?\u00a0 No, I tell you, but rather division! \u00a0For from now on there will be five in one household divided, three against two and two against three. \u00a0They will be divided, father against<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/06\/romans-part-22\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a><\/em> son and son against father, mother against daughter<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/06\/romans-part-22\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a><\/em> and daughter against mother,<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/06\/romans-part-22\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a><\/em> mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/06\/romans-part-22\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a id=\"_hate\"><\/a><em>Do not think that I have come to bring peace<\/em> (\u03b5\u1f30\u03c1\u1f75\u03bd\u03b7\u03bd, a form of \u03b5\u1f30\u03c1\u03ae\u03bd\u03b7) <em>to the earth, <\/em>Jesus said.<em> I have not come to bring peace<\/em> (\u03b5\u1f30\u03c1\u1f75\u03bd\u03b7\u03bd, a form of \u03b5\u1f30\u03c1\u03ae\u03bd\u03b7) <em>but a sword.\u00a0 For I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law, and a man\u2019s enemies will be the members of his household<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/06\/romans-part-22\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It is hard to imagine anything more divisive than Jesus\u2019 exclusive claim, <em>I am the way, and the truth, and the life<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/06\/romans-part-22\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 He did not say to those of the East, I know the way.\u00a0 He did not say to those of the West, I know the truth.\u00a0 He did not say to Israel, I know the life.\u00a0 He said, <em>I am the way, and the truth, and the life.\u00a0 No one comes to the Father except through me<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/06\/romans-part-22\/#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jesus was not a good man.\u00a0 He was clearly insane or He was Yahweh come in human flesh just as He claimed: <em>I tell you the solemn truth, before Abraham came into existence, I am!<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/06\/romans-part-22\/#sdfootnote11sym\" name=\"sdfootnote11anc\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 He continued as recorded by Matthew to give his followers instruction in light of the division He had come to bring to families: <em>Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.\u00a0 And whoever does not <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/01\/the-will-of-god-jesus-part-3\/\">take up his cross and follow me<\/a> is not worthy of me.\u00a0 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life because of me will find it<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/06\/romans-part-22\/#sdfootnote12sym\" name=\"sdfootnote12anc\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>I have told you these things<\/em>, Jesus comforted his followers, <em>so that in me you may have peace<\/em> (\u03b5\u1f30\u03c1\u1f75\u03bd\u03b7\u03bd, a form of \u03b5\u1f30\u03c1\u03ae\u03bd\u03b7).\u00a0 <em>In the world you have trouble and suffering<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ql.html#qliyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u03bb\u1fd6\u03c8\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ql.html#qliyis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u03bb\u03af\u03c8\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>), <em>but take courage \u2013 I have conquered <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ne.html#nenikhka\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bd\u03b5\u03bd\u1f77\u03ba\u03b7\u03ba\u03b1<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ni.html#nikaw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bd\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>) <em>the world<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/06\/romans-part-22\/#sdfootnote13sym\" name=\"sdfootnote13anc\"><sup>13<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Peace is an aspect of the fruit of the Spirit, flowing from God through his Spirit to each and every believer.\u00a0 <em>But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace<\/em> (\u03b5\u1f30\u03c1\u03ae\u03bd\u03b7), <em>patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/04\/18\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-6\/#_ftn4\">gentleness<\/a>, and self-control.\u00a0 Against such things there is no law<\/em> [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/04\/18\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-6\/#_Table29\">Table<\/a>].<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/06\/romans-part-22\/#sdfootnote14sym\" name=\"sdfootnote14anc\"><sup>14<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Therefore, since we have been declared righteous by faith<\/em>, Paul wrote the Romans, <em>we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have also obtained access by<\/em> <em>faith <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) <em>into this grace<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ca.html#carin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c7\u1f71\u03c1\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/do.html#doxa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03cc\u03be\u03b1<\/a>).<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/06\/romans-part-22\/#sdfootnote15sym\" name=\"sdfootnote15anc\"><sup>15<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Boasting<\/em> or <em>glorying<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kau.html#kauchsis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03cd\u03c7\u03b7\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) in ourselves <em>is excluded<\/em>\u2026<em>by the principle of faith<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/06\/romans-part-22\/#sdfootnote16sym\" name=\"sdfootnote16anc\"><sup>16<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It is through Christ that believers have <em>obtained access by<\/em> <em>faith into this grace<\/em> <em>in which we stand<\/em>; namely, the righteousness of God [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/11\/12\/atonement-part-11\/#_Table11\">Table<\/a>]<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/06\/romans-part-22\/#sdfootnote17sym\" name=\"sdfootnote17anc\"><sup>17<\/sup><\/a> by the fruit of his Spirit. \u00a0So believers <em>boast<\/em> or <em>rejoice<\/em> <em>in the hope of God\u2019s glory<\/em>.\u00a0 This is the <em>glory<\/em> which was withheld from God when people <em>did not glorify<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ed.html#edoxasan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03b4\u1f79\u03be\u03b1\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/do.html#doxazw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03bf\u03be\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>) <em>him as God or give him <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/25\/romans-part-2\/#sdfootnote4sym\">thanks<\/a><\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/06\/romans-part-22\/#sdfootnote18sym\" name=\"sdfootnote18anc\"><sup>18<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And believers <em>rejoice in hope<\/em> because they do not yet see the fullness of this glory in themselves, not merely that they do not praise themselves, nor that they praise God with mere words, but that they glorify Him with lives that are reflections of his gift of righteousness by the fruit of his Spirit.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_punishment\"><\/a>This <em>grace in which we stand<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/es.html#esthkamen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f11\u03c3\u03c4\u1f75\u03ba\u03b1\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/is.html#isthmi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f35\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>) was difficult for me to comprehend.\u00a0 It is the same word as <em>uphold<\/em> in the answer to Paul\u2019s question, <em>Do we then nullify the law through faith?\u00a0 Absolutely not!\u00a0 Instead <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/12\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-4\/#_ftn17\">we uphold<\/a> <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/is.html#istanomen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f31\u03c3\u03c4\u1f71\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/is.html#istanw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f31\u03c3\u03c4\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>) <em>the law<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/06\/romans-part-22\/#sdfootnote19sym\" name=\"sdfootnote19anc\"><sup>19<\/sup><\/a> [<strong>Addendum March 7, 2024<\/strong>: According to the Koine Greek Lexicon online, <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/is.html#istanomen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f31\u03c3\u03c4\u1f71\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a> is a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/is.html#istanw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f31\u03c3\u03c4\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>.]\u00a0 The King James <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kingjamesbibleonline.org\/Romans-3-31\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">translation<\/a> had it, <em>we establish the law<\/em>.\u00a0 I had trouble squaring grace and establishing the law because I thought establishing the law meant an evenhanded application of the punishments for sin listed in Leviticus 20, for instance.\u00a0 I thought the law could not or would not be established or upheld until those punishments were implemented on the whole planet, whether by believers or by Christ Himself I was never quite certain.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_police\"><\/a>I was Abin Cooper from <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kevin_Smith\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kevin Smith\u2019s<\/a> \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Red_State_%282011_film%29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Red State<\/a>\u201d (played brilliantly by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michael_Parks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Parks<\/a>, by the way) in spirit if not in action (my \u201cfaith\u201d was completely devoid of works, thankfully, in this particular case).\u00a0 Long before Kevin Smith penned \u201cRed State\u201d the Lord used <a href=\"http:\/\/4umi.com\/nietzsche\/zarathustra\/27\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nietzsche\u2019s<\/a> hot wind to unmask me.\u00a0 \u201cAnd again, there are those who hold it a virtue to say: \u2018Virtue is necessary\u2019: but fundamentally they believe only that the police are necessary.\u201d<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/06\/romans-part-22\/#sdfootnote20sym\" name=\"sdfootnote20anc\"><sup>20<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I argued for a time that Nietzsche had not aptly described me, but lost that argument in the end.\u00a0 \u201cSometimes when you lose, you win.\u201d<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/06\/romans-part-22\/#sdfootnote21sym\" name=\"sdfootnote21anc\"><sup>21<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Once I acknowledged that I didn\u2019t know what it meant to <em>uphold<\/em> or <em>establish<\/em> the law, I began to learn.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_doer\"><\/a>We who <em>through <\/em>Jesus Christ<em> have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand<\/em> do not glorify God or uphold his law by seeking to punish evildoers, but by demonstrating the love that <em>is the fulfillment of the law<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/06\/romans-part-22\/#sdfootnote22sym\" name=\"sdfootnote22anc\"><sup>22<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but I do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. \u00a0And if I have prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith so that <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/02\/08\/who-am-i-part-13\/#_ftn5\">I can remove<\/a> mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/02\/08\/who-am-i-part-13\/#_Table3\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/26\/romans-part-3\/#sdfootnote9sym\">If<\/a> I give away everything I own, and if I give over my body in order to <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/26\/romans-part-3\/#sdfootnote10sym\">boast<\/a>, but do not have love, I receive no benefit <em>[<a
