{"id":13682,"date":"2020-02-17T22:36:57","date_gmt":"2020-02-17T16:36:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/?p=13682"},"modified":"2026-06-01T10:12:32","modified_gmt":"2026-06-01T15:12:32","slug":"father-forgive-them-part-6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/religiousmind.net\/?p=13682","title":{"rendered":"Father, Forgive Them &#8211; Part 6"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Three things stand out to me (Luke 23:32-34a <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/07\/forgiveness\/#_Table11\">Table<\/a>; John 12:32, 33; Matthew 22:41-46):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Two other criminals were also led away to be executed with <em>[Jesus]<\/em>. \u00a0So when they <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/07\/forgiveness\/#sdfootnote35sym\">came<\/a> to the place that is called \u201cThe Skull,\u201d they crucified him there, along with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. \u00a0[But Jesus said, \u201cFather, forgive them, for they don\u2019t know what they are doing.\u201d]<\/p>\n<p>And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/02\/17\/father-forgive-them-part-6\/#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> all people to myself.\u201d \u00a0(Now <em>[Jesus]<\/em> said this to indicate clearly what kind of death he was going to die.)<\/p>\n<p>While the Pharisees were assembled, Jesus asked them a question: \u201cWhat do you think about the Christ? \u00a0Whose son is he?\u201d \u00a0They said, \u201cThe son of David.\u201d<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/02\/17\/father-forgive-them-part-6\/#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> \u00a0He said to them, \u201cHow then does David<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/02\/17\/father-forgive-them-part-6\/#_ftn3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> by the Spirit call him \u2018Lord,\u2019 saying, \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/12\/28\/father-forgive-them-part-5\/#_ftn4\">The<\/a> Lord said to my lord, \u201cSit at my right hand, until I put your enemies <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/12\/28\/father-forgive-them-part-5\/#_ftn5\">under<\/a> your feet\u201d\u2019 <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/12\/28\/father-forgive-them-part-5\/#_Table1\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>? \u00a0If David<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/02\/17\/father-forgive-them-part-6\/#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> then calls him \u2018Lord,\u2019 how can he be his son?\u201d \u00a0No one was able to answer him a word,<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/02\/17\/father-forgive-them-part-6\/#_ftn5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> and from that day on no one dared to question him any longer.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A fourth thing is like the other three: <em>And when he comes<\/em>, Jesus promised concerning the <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/John+16:7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Advocate<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/John+15:26\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Spirit of truth<\/a>, <em>he will prove the world wrong concerning sin and righteousness and judgment<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/02\/17\/father-forgive-them-part-6\/#_ftn6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So I have Jesus\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/James+5:16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">righteous<\/a> prayer from the cross, his promise to <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/07\/25\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-8\/#_draws\">draw<\/a> all to Himself, our Father\u2019s promise to put Jesus\u2019 enemies <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/12\/28\/father-forgive-them-part-5\/\">under<\/a> his feet and the promise that the Holy Spirit will prove wrong or <em>reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/02\/17\/father-forgive-them-part-6\/#_ftn7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This sketch outlines the work of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit for salvation, work which precedes my faith that (Romans 3:23-26 KJV):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/06\/jedidiah-part-3\/#_propitiation\">propitiation<\/a> through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; To <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/06\/jedidiah-part-3\/#sdfootnote13sym\">declare<\/a>, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/06\/jedidiah-part-3\/#_Table12\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It adequately explains why Paul didn\u2019t celebrate my faith as a worthy personal achievement: <em>For by grace you are saved through faith,<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/02\/17\/father-forgive-them-part-6\/#_ftn8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a> <em>and this<\/em> <em>is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God<\/em>. <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/02\/17\/father-forgive-them-part-6\/#_ftn9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_lazy\"><\/a>I\u2019m aware of the argument that <em>this <\/em>(\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c4\u03bf) cannot refer to <em>faith <\/em>(\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2) because <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/to.html#touto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c4\u03bf<\/a> is neuter and <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a> is feminine.\u00a0 I\u2019m not qualified to engage that argument so I\u2019ll defer to <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/site\/mattolliffe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matthew Olliffe<\/a>, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/au.thegospelcoalition.org\/article\/is-faith-the-gift-of-god-reading-ephesians-28-10-with-the-ancients\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Is \u2018Faith\u2019 the \u2018Gift of God\u2019? Reading Ephesians 2:8-10 with the Ancients<\/a>,\u201d from <a href=\"https:\/\/au.thegospelcoalition.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Gospel Coalition<\/a> online. \u00a0An alternative view is presented by <a href=\"https:\/\/moodyaudio.com\/person\/rene-lopez\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ren\u00e9 A. L\u00f3pez<\/a>, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dts.edu\/download\/publications\/bibliotheca\/BibSac-Lopez-IsFaithAGiftfromGodoraHumanExercise.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IS FAITH A GIFT FROM GOD OR A HUMAN EXERCISE?<\/a>,\u201d from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dts.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dallas Theological Seminary<\/a> online. \u00a0The only thing I feel qualified to comment on here was a rhetorical question: \u201cWho would accuse a beggar of working by holding out his hand to receive a dollar bill?\u00a0 No one!\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/02\/17\/father-forgive-them-part-6\/#_ftn10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I have disengaged from conversation with a person seeking <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/10\/11\/romans-part-47\/#_alms\">alms<\/a> by saying, \u201cI\u2019ll let you get back to work.\u201d\u00a0 The difference between us is that when I go to work my pay is guaranteed by law.\u00a0 No matter how many hours the person seeking alms spends in the heat, the cold or the wet, there is no guarantee but the grace of God.\u00a0 And more often than not I\u2019ve been blessed in his name by those dependent upon Him for their next meal.<\/p>\n<p>Whether the momentary faith that brings one into a relationship with Jesus Christ is ultimately \u201ca gift from God or a human exercise,\u201d faith (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) is an aspect of the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22, 23 NET <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/08\/26\/atonement-part-4\/#_Table4\">Table<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness <em>(\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2)<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/08\/26\/atonement-part-4\/#_ftn22\">gentleness<\/a>, and self-control.\u00a0 Against such things there is no law.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The believer seeks to rely on the Holy Spirit\u2019s <em>faithfulness<\/em>, as opposed to one\u2019s own, as soon as possible: <em>For all who are led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/02\/17\/father-forgive-them-part-6\/#_ftn11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 (Perhaps a new believer relies instinctively on the Holy Spirit\u2019s <em>faithfulness<\/em>, until the religious mind leads one astray.)\u00a0 Mr. L\u00f3pez didn\u2019t confine his objections to initial saving faith.\u00a0 He continued with some discussion of sanctification, quoting <a href=\"https:\/\/bible.org\/users\/gary-nebeker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gary Nebeker<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/02\/17\/father-forgive-them-part-6\/#_ftn12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cAn infused idea of faith engenders a less-than-balanced view of sanctification, i.e., victory in the spiritual life is viewed as a virtual guarantee.\u00a0 If God gives believers faith to live the Christian life, then the difficult aspects of progressive holiness commanded in Scripture tend to be softpedaled.\u201d<sup>66<\/sup><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>If faith is a gift, then many commands in Scripture that exhort, command, prompt, and warn believers to live obediently become superfluous because the ultimate end of infused faith guarantees the sanctification of believers without their involvement.\u00a0 Followed to its logical conclusion the gift-of-faith view lessens the urgency of putting forth effort to obey scriptural exhortations.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I may be more susceptible to a works religion than some, but \u201cputting forth effort to obey scriptural exhortations\u201d sounds to me like trying to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Philippians+3:9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">have my own righteousness derived<\/a><\/em>, if not <em>from the law<\/em>, from the exhortations, commands, prompts and warnings of the New Testament perceived as rules to be obeyed.\u00a0 That does not sound like <em>the one who practices the truth<\/em> [who] <em>comes to the light, so that it may be plainly evident that his deeds have been done in God<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/02\/17\/father-forgive-them-part-6\/#_ftn13\"><sup><sup>[13]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Nor does it sound like the one who has entered God\u2019s rest (Hebrews 4:10-13):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For the one who enters God\u2019s rest <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/katap.html#katapausin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac\u03c0\u03b1\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/katap.html#katapausis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac\u03c0\u03b1\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> has also rested <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/katep.html#katepause\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03ad\u03c0\u03b1\u03c5\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/katap.html#katapauw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03c0\u03b1\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> from his works, just as God did from his own works.\u00a0 Thus we must make every effort to enter that rest <em>(\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac\u03c0\u03b1\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd)<\/em>, so that no one may fall by following the same pattern of disobedience <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Numbers+13:1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Numbers 13-14<\/a>)<\/em>. \u00a0For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any double-edged sword, piercing even to the point of dividing soul<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/02\/17\/father-forgive-them-part-6\/#_ftn14\"><sup>[14]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> from spirit, and joints from marrow; it is able to judge the desires and thoughts of the heart. \u00a0And no creature is hidden from God, but everything is naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must render an account.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a id=\"_eager\"><\/a>It seems pertinent here to point out that <em>we must make every effort<\/em> (KJV: <em>Let us labour<\/em>) was <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sp.html#spoudaswmen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03a3\u03c0\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u03ac\u03c3\u03c9\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a> in Greek, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sp.html#spoudazw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03a3\u03c0\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>: \u201cto hasten, hurry, use speed, act with speed; to be zealous, eager, diligent; to be busy; to become mentally unsettled.\u201d\u00a0 <em>They <\/em>[e.g., <em><a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Galatians+2:6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">those who were influential<\/a><\/em>] <em>requested only that we remember the poor<\/em>, Paul wrote believers in Galatia, <em>the very thing I also was eager<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/es.html#espoudasa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f10\u03c3\u03c0\u03bf\u03cd\u03b4\u03b1\u03c3\u03b1<\/a>, another form of \u03c3\u03c0\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9) <em>to do<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/02\/17\/father-forgive-them-part-6\/#_ftn15\"><sup>[15]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I\u2019ll suggest that <em>being eager<\/em> to enter God\u2019s rest might be a better understanding than <em>effort <\/em>or <em>labour<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. L\u00f3pez\u2019s argument that \u201cthe ultimate end of infused faith guarantees the sanctification of believers without their involvement\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/02\/17\/father-forgive-them-part-6\/#_ftn16\"><sup>[16]<\/sup><\/a> seems like a diabolical <a href=\"https:\/\/www.logicallyfallacious.com\/tools\/lp\/Bo\/LogicalFallacies\/150\/Red-Herring\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">red herring<\/a> to me since my primary \u201cinvolvement\u201d in my sanctification was to take charge and try to accomplish it myself by <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/14\/davids-forgiveness-part-6\/\">obeying rules<\/a>.\u00a0 If he referred instead to Bible study, I can\u2019t say that any consideration of how faith is produced\u2014whether as an outright gift or by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Romans+10%3A17&amp;version=NKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">other<\/a> means of God\u2019s grace\u2014ever diminished my appetite for Bible study.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_appetite\"><\/a>My life divides into two parts: 1) From reciting the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/09\/you-must-be-gentle-part-3\/#_heaven\">sinner\u2019s prayer<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/23\/who-am-i-part-3\/\">atheism<\/a> (about 5 years of age to 17); and 2) <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/23\/who-am-i-part-3\/#_ask\">asking<\/a> to know the Lord if He was there to be known to the present (about 22 years of age to 66 currently).\u00a0 In <em>part one<\/em> of my life I had a distaste for the Bible, almost nothing could compel me to regular study.\u00a0 In <em>part two<\/em>, I\u2019ve had such a hunger that almost nothing could dissuade me from regular Bible study; nothing except, sadly, marriage and family.\u00a0 I was too busy then being promoted at work to my <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peter_principle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">level of incompetence<\/a> and at home trying to <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/1+Corinthians+7:33\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">please my wife<\/a>\u00a0(another \u201cpromotion\u201d to my level of incompetence).\u00a0 But I consider this <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/09\/you-must-be-gentle-part-3\/#_outside\">appetite<\/a>\u00a0for the Bible God\u2019s answer to my prayer rather than a personal achievement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf God gives believers faith to live the Christian life, then the difficult aspects of progressive holiness commanded in Scripture tend to be softpedaled.\u201d\u00a0 Which of the two regimes Jesus contrasted does this Gary Nebeker quote sound most like?<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"319\">Matthew 23:2-7 (NET)<\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"319\">Matthew 11:25b-30 (NET)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"319\">The experts in the law and the Pharisees sit on Moses\u2019<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/02\/17\/father-forgive-them-part-6\/#_ftn17\"><sup>[17]<\/sup><\/a> seat. \u00a0Therefore pay attention to what<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/02\/17\/father-forgive-them-part-6\/#_ftn18\"><sup>[18]<\/sup><\/a> they tell you<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/02\/17\/father-forgive-them-part-6\/#_ftn19\"><sup>[19]<\/sup><\/a> and do<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/02\/17\/father-forgive-them-part-6\/#_ftn20\"><sup>[20]<\/sup><\/a> it. \u00a0But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they teach. \u00a0They tie up<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/02\/17\/father-forgive-them-part-6\/#_ftn21\"><sup>[21]<\/sup><\/a> heavy loads, hard to carry, and put them on men\u2019s shoulders, but they<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/02\/17\/father-forgive-them-part-6\/#_ftn22\"><sup>[22]<\/sup><\/a> themselves are not willing even to lift a finger to move them. \u00a0They do all their deeds to be seen by people, for<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/02\/17\/father-forgive-them-part-6\/#_ftn23\"><sup>[23]<\/sup><\/a> they make their phylacteries wide and their tassels long.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/02\/17\/father-forgive-them-part-6\/#_ftn24\"><sup>[24]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0They love<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/02\/17\/father-forgive-them-part-6\/#_ftn25\"><sup>[25]<\/sup><\/a> the place of honor at banquets and the best seats in the synagogues and elaborate greetings in the marketplaces, and to have people call them \u2018Rabbi.\u2019<a
