(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ql.html#qliyesi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u03bb\u1f77\u03c8\u03b5\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ql.html#qliyis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u03bb\u03af\u03c8\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>),<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/07\/romans-part-23\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a> Paul continued.\u00a0 I\u2019ve already written about the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/21\/paul-in-corinth\/\">feedback loop<\/a> that fosters this apparent masochism in believers and won\u2019t do so again. \u00a0The word translated <em>sufferings<\/em> in Romans 5:3 (NET) above was translated <em>affliction<\/em> in 2 Corinthians 1:8 (NET): <em>For we do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, regarding the affliction <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ql.html#qliyews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u03bb\u1f77\u03c8\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ql.html#qliyis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u03bb\u03af\u03c8\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) <em>that happened <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/12\/pauls-religious-mind\/#sdfootnote33sym\">to us<\/a> in the province of Asia, that we were burdened excessively, beyond our strength, so that we despaired even of living <\/em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/09\/08\/atonement-part-5\/#_Table4\">Table<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know when Paul\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ql.html#qliyews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u03bb\u1f77\u03c8\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ql.html#qliyis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u03bb\u03af\u03c8\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) began, perhaps as early as his first visit to Ephesus.\u00a0 After he left Corinth he made his way there and <em>went into the synagogue and addressed<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/07\/romans-part-23\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> <em>the Jews<\/em>.\u00a0 <em>When they asked him to stay longer,<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/07\/romans-part-23\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a> <em>he would not consent, but<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/07\/romans-part-23\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a> <em>and<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/07\/romans-part-23\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a> <em>added<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/07\/romans-part-23\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a><em>, \u201cI<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/07\/romans-part-23\/#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a> <em>will come back to you again if God wills.\u201d\u00a0 Then<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/07\/romans-part-23\/#sdfootnote11sym\" name=\"sdfootnote11anc\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a> <em>he set sail from Ephesus\u2026<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/07\/romans-part-23\/#sdfootnote12sym\" name=\"sdfootnote12anc\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Paul greeted the church in Jerusalem briefly and went home to Antioch.\u00a0 Perhaps he was simply tired and needed a rest.\u00a0 But for Paul who wrote\u2014<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/04\/saul-and-barnabas-part-3\/#_ftn12\">I could wish<\/a> that I myself were accursed \u2013 cut off from Christ \u2013 for the sake of my people, my fellow countrymen<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/07\/romans-part-23\/#sdfootnote13sym\" name=\"sdfootnote13anc\"><sup>13<\/sup><\/a>\u2014to turn his back on his fellow countrymen when they were eager to hear him again seems like something more troubling than exhaustion.<\/p>\n<p>Admittedly, I have little to go on, but the message of Paul\u2019s letter to the Romans steers me toward the dilemma of the <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/por.html#pornoi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f79\u03c1\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9<\/a> (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/por.html#pornos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03cc\u03c1\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) and the Pharisees.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prostitution_in_ancient_Greece#Male_prostitution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c0\u1f79\u03c1\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9<\/a> were men who <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sacred_prostitution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">served<\/a> a pagan god, a <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/1+Corinthians+10:20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">demon<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prostitution_in_ancient_Rome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sexually<\/a>, the vilest of the vile from a Pharisee\u2019s point of view.\u00a0 Yet the \u03c0\u1f79\u03c1\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u00a0were granted faith and repentance in Corinth<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/07\/romans-part-23\/#sdfootnote14sym\" name=\"sdfootnote14anc\"><sup>14<\/sup><\/a> while so many Pharisees were not.\u00a0 Jesus said it (Matthew 21:28-32 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWhat do you think?\u00a0 A man had two sons.\u00a0 He went to the first and said, \u2018Son, go and work in the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/13\/the-will-of-god-jesus-part-1\/#sdfootnote11sym\">vineyard<\/a> today <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/13\/the-will-of-god-jesus-part-1\/#_Table33\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.\u2019 \u00a0The boy answered, \u2018I will not.\u2019\u00a0 But later he had a change of heart <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/meta.html#metamelhqeis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03bc\u03b5\u03bb\u03b7\u03b8\u03b5\u1f76\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/meta.html#metamelomai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03bc\u03ad\u03bb\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) <\/em>and went. \u00a0The father <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/13\/the-will-of-god-jesus-part-1\/#sdfootnote12sym\">went<\/a> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/13\/the-will-of-god-jesus-part-1\/#sdfootnote13sym\">other<\/a> son and said the same thing. \u00a0This boy answered, \u2018I will, sir,\u2019 but did not go. \u00a0Which of the two did his father\u2019s will?\u201d\u00a0 They said,<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/07\/romans-part-23\/#sdfootnote15sym\" name=\"sdfootnote15anc\"><sup>15<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>\u201cThe first.\u201d \u00a0Jesus said to them, \u201cI tell you the truth, tax collectors and prostitutes <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/por.html#pornai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c0\u1f79\u03c1\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/por.html#pornh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c0\u03cc\u03c1\u03bd\u03b7<\/a>) <\/em>will go ahead of you into the kingdom of God! <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/13\/the-will-of-god-jesus-part-1\/#_Table34\">Table<\/a>]<\/em> \u00a0For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epist.html#episteusate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u1f7b\u03c3\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pisteuw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>him. \u00a0But the tax collectors and prostitutes <em>(\u03c0\u1f79\u03c1\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9<em>, a form of <\/em><\/em><em>\u03c0\u03cc\u03c1\u03bd\u03b7)<\/em> did believe <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epist.html#episteusan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c5\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pisteuw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em>. \u00a0\u00a0Although you saw <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/id.html#idontes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f30\u03b4\u1f79\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/eid.html#eidw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b5\u1f34\u03b4\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>this, you did <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/01\/21\/christianity-part-7\/#sdfootnote36sym\">not<\/a> later change your minds <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/mete.html#metemelhqhte\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5\u03bc\u03b5\u03bb\u1f75\u03b8\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/meta.html#metamelomai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03bc\u03ad\u03bb\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>)<\/em> and believe <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pisteusai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u1fe6\u03c3\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pisteuw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> him\u201d <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/01\/21\/christianity-part-7\/#_Table10\">Table<\/a>].<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But I think experiencing it was difficult for Paul.\u00a0 Rather than being flippant with the Jews at Ephesus, or using \u201cGod\u2019s will\u201d as an excuse, I suspect that Paul was sincerely concerned that God may not will that he return to Ephesus or anywhere else, that Paul <em><a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/2+Corinthians+1:8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">despaired even of living<\/a><\/em> the only life he had known since his encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus.\u00a0 Of course, I can be wrong about this.\u00a0 The affliction happened to <em>us<\/em> (plural) in the province of Asia, <em>we<\/em> were burdened excessively, and <em>we <\/em>despaired even of living.\u00a0 Paul seemed to be alone that first Sabbath day in Ephesus.\u00a0 If his affliction came later, then it is more difficult to pin down.\u00a0 Luke didn\u2019t mention it in Acts.<\/p>\n<p>Paul\u2019s affliction may have continued for a long time. \u00a0He may have referred to it (and its relation to his previous letter to the Corinthians) in Macedonia after returning home for an unspecified amount of time, strengthening the disciples in Galatia and Phyrgia, and then spending two years at Ephesus (2 Corinthians 7:5, 6 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For even when we came into Macedonia, our body had no rest at all, but we were troubled <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ql.html#qlibomenoi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b8\u03bb\u03b9\u03b2\u1f79\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ql.html#qlibw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b8\u03bb\u03af\u03b2\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>in every way \u2013 struggles from the outside, fears from within. \u00a0But God, who encourages the downhearted, encouraged us by the arrival of Titus.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Far from being debilitating this affliction in the province of Asia was a very productive period for Paul (Acts 19:11, 12 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>God was performing extraordinary miracles by Paul\u2019s hands, so that when even handkerchiefs or aprons that had touched his body were brought to the sick, their diseases left them and the evil spirits went out of them.<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/07\/romans-part-23\/#sdfootnote16sym\" name=\"sdfootnote16anc\"><sup>16<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Though this seems counterintuitive, the sense of it becomes more apparent when I heed Paul\u2019s own assessment of his affliction (2 Corinthians 1:9 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Indeed we felt as if the sentence of death had been passed against us, so that we would not trust in ourselves but in God who raises the dead.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Jesus said to Paul, <em>My grace is enough for you, for <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/12\/15\/hannahs-prayer-part-5\/#_ftn13\">my<\/a> power <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/12\/15\/hannahs-prayer-part-5\/#_ftn14\">is made perfect<\/a> in weakness<\/em>.\u00a0 And Paul concluded, <em>So then, I will boast most gladly about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may reside in me. \u00a0Therefore I am content with weaknesses, with insults, with troubles, with persecutions <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/12\/15\/hannahs-prayer-part-5\/#_ftn15\">and<\/a> difficulties for the sake of Christ, for whenever I am weak, then I am strong<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/07\/romans-part-23\/#sdfootnote17sym\" name=\"sdfootnote17anc\"><sup>17<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_sufferings\"><\/a>Paul probably wrote his letter to the Romans during his two year stay at Ephesus in the province of Asia.\u00a0 And I assume that <em>weaknesses, insults, troubles, persecutions and difficulties<\/em> along with <em>struggles from the outside<\/em>, and <em>fears from within<\/em> is what he meant by \u03b8\u03bb\u03af\u03c8\u03b9\u03c2: <em>we also rejoice in sufferings <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ql.html#qliyesi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u03bb\u1f77\u03c8\u03b5\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ql.html#qliyis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u03bb\u03af\u03c8\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>), <em>knowing that suffering<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ql.html#qliyis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u03bb\u1fd6\u03c8\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) <em>produces endurance, and endurance, character, and character, hope<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/07\/romans-part-23\/#sdfootnote18sym\" name=\"sdfootnote18anc\"><sup>18<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The word translated <em>knowing<\/em> above is <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/eid.html#eidotes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b5\u1f30\u03b4\u1f79\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2<\/a> (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/eid.html#eidw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b5\u1f34\u03b4\u03c9<\/a>), <em>to see<\/em>.\u00a0 Paul was an eyewitness to this transformation of suffering into endurance into character into hope.\u00a0 But <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/04\/romans-part-21\/\">again<\/a>, there is nothing intrinsic to <em>suffering<\/em>\u00a0that in and of itself produces <em>endurance<\/em>.\u00a0 Jesus spoke about the <em>person who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy. \u00a0But he has no root <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ri.html#rizan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c1\u1f77\u03b6\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ri.html#riza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1fe5\u03af\u03b6\u03b1<\/a>)<em> in himself and does not endure; when trouble <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ql.html#qliyews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u03bb\u1f77\u03c8\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ql.html#qliyis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u03bb\u03af\u03c8\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) <em>or persecution comes because of the word, immediately he falls away<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/07\/romans-part-23\/#sdfootnote19sym\" name=\"sdfootnote19anc\"><sup>19<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Though the phrase <em>he has no root in himself <\/em>might lead one to the conclusion that the solution is to have deep roots in oneself, the
