to leave (neglected and uncared for); to leave (unharmed); to leave (something\/someone) behind; to cause to remain behind; to forsake, abandon; to bequeath to (someone); to sever ties with (someone)\u201d\u2014can feel the pathos of \u201cI left him there.\u201d\u00a0 When I mentioned this possibility to my own mother, she told her first born son that a mother would want her son to know why she abandoned him.<\/p>\n<p>The Elpenor version of the Septuagint had <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/katel.html#katelipe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03ad\u03bb\u03b9\u03c0\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, the third person singular form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03bb\u03b5\u03af\u03c0\u03c9, translated <em>she left<\/em>.\u00a0 The word translated <em>departed <\/em>was <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/aph.html#aphlqe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f00\u03c0\u1fc6\u03bb\u03b8\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, the third person singular form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03ad\u03c1\u03c7\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9.\u00a0 These do the least damage to a first person narrative while allowing the male religious mind to purr contentedly again.\u00a0 What becomes conspicuous by its absence from both versions of the Septuagint is any mention of \u0395\u03bb\u03ba\u03b1\u03bd\u1f70.<\/p>\n<p>From this perspective the insertion of <em>Elkanah <\/em>back into the Masoretic text is so patriarchal it feels like stormtroopers trampling on the narrative.\u00a0 I think I can hear <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Williams\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John William\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HfLRCrQmZbU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">theme<\/a> playing in the background.\u00a0 But the point is well taken.\u00a0 Hannah didn\u2019t leave Samuel in Shiloh apart from Elkanah.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\" width=\"319\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Masoretic Text<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" colspan=\"2\" width=\"319\">Septuagint<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"160\">1 Samuel 1:1-5 (Tanakh)<\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"160\">1 Samuel 1:1-5 (NET)<\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"160\">1 Reigns 1:1-5 (NETS)<\/td>\n<td width=\"160\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">1 Kings 1:1-5 (Elpenor English)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"160\">NOW THERE was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim, of the hill-country of Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.<\/td>\n<td width=\"160\">There was a man from Ramathaim Zophim, from the hill country of Ephraim. \u00a0His name was Elkanah. \u00a0He was the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.<\/td>\n<td width=\"160\">There was a man of Harmathaim Sipha from the hill country of Ephraim, and his name was Elkana son of Ieremeel son of Eliou son of Thoke, in Nasib Ephraim.<\/td>\n<td width=\"160\">There was a man of Armathaim Sipha, of mount Ephraim, and his name [was] Helkana, a son of Jeremeel the son of Elias the son of Thoke, in Nasib Ephraim.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"160\">And he had two wives: the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah;
