The Greek word (Table2<\/a> below) translated they left<\/em> in the NETS was \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03ad\u03bb\u03b9\u03c0\u03bf\u03bd<\/a> in the BLB version of the Septuagint, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03bb\u03b5\u03af\u03c0\u03c9<\/a>.\u00a0 Likewise the word translated departed <\/em>was \u1f00\u03c0\u1fc6\u03bb\u03b8\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03ad\u03c1\u03c7\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>.\u00a0 Both are third person plural forms, but both are also first person singular forms.\u00a0 In other words the BLB version of the Septuagint might have been translated: \u201cAnd I left him there before the Lord and departed to Harmathaim.\u201d<\/p>\n

Was this Hannah\u2019s first person narrative originally, dutifully copied by a loving son?<\/p>\n

The thought causes the male religious mind to fizz and sputter. \u00a0But even a man considering the Koine Greek Lexicon\u2019s<\/a> definition of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03bb\u03b5\u03af\u03c0\u03c9\u2014\u201cto leave (in a certain state after something has happened); to leave (neglected and uncared for); to leave (unharmed); to leave (something\/someone) behind; to cause to remain behind; to forsake, abandon; to bequeath to (someone); to sever ties with (someone)\u201d\u2014can feel the pathos of \u201cI left him there.\u201d\u00a0 When I mentioned this possibility to my own mother, she told her first born son that a mother would want her son to know why she abandoned him.<\/p>\n

The Elpenor version of the Septuagint had \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03ad\u03bb\u03b9\u03c0\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, the third person singular form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03bb\u03b5\u03af\u03c0\u03c9, translated she left<\/em>.\u00a0 The word translated departed <\/em>was \u1f00\u03c0\u1fc6\u03bb\u03b8\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, the third person singular form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03ad\u03c1\u03c7\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9.\u00a0 These do the least damage to a first person narrative while allowing the male religious mind to purr contentedly again.\u00a0 What becomes conspicuous by its absence from both versions of the Septuagint is any mention of \u0395\u03bb\u03ba\u03b1\u03bd\u1f70.<\/p>\n

From this perspective the insertion of Elkanah <\/em>back into the Masoretic text is so patriarchal it feels like stormtroopers trampling on the narrative.\u00a0 I think I can hear John William\u2019s<\/a> theme<\/a> playing in the background.\u00a0 But the point is well taken.\u00a0 Hannah didn\u2019t leave Samuel in Shiloh apart from Elkanah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

It intrigues me that this authoritative assessment\u2014inspired by God<\/a><\/em>\u2014of Elkanah\u2019s love for Hannah might also be her firsthand account.\u00a0 Be that as it may Samuel was Elkanah\u2019s Joseph<\/a>, the firstborn son (Genesis 30:22-24<\/a>) of a beloved wife<\/a>.\u00a0 And Hannah had vowed to give Samuel to the Lord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Neither my Greek nor Hebrew is sufficient to guess whether the Septuagint was more original or a somewhat agnostic rendering of the original Hebrew.\u00a0 In either case, Elkanah prayed to, and trusted, the Lord to establish what came out of Hannah\u2019s mouth, perhaps, as His own word\u2014and it was so.<\/p>\n

Who are these people?\u00a0 Most in Israel were caught up in a monotonous cycle<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

I wonder if Elkanah and Hannah were on Jesus\u2019 mind when He said, Enter<\/em>[1]<\/sup><\/a> through the narrow gate, because the gate is wide and the way is spacious that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. \u00a0How<\/a> narrow is the gate and difficult the way that leads to life, and there are few who find it!<\/em>[2]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking of this destruction <\/em>(\u1f00\u03c0\u03ce\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03ce\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1<\/a>) as a destruction of corruption<\/a>\u2014\u201ccompletely severed<\/em> \u2013 cut off <\/em>(entirely) from <\/em>what could <\/em>or should <\/em>have been\u201d[3]<\/sup><\/a>\u2014rather than \u201can eternal sojourn in a lake of fire.\u201d[4]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 All in Israel could <\/em>or should <\/em>have been like Elkanah and Hannah but for their rejection of God as their king.<\/p>\n

Perhaps Hannah\u2019s prayer was an ecstatic expression of the Holy Spirit.\u00a0 But I would like to think that she along with the Holy Spirit uncovered and rehearsed these words as she nursed, bathed, dressed and dandled the infant Samuel.\u00a0 I would like to think that the words she prayed were the very words<\/a> that empowered her to leave him there before the Lord<\/em>, that she has revealed to us the strength by which He established His word<\/em>\u2014that is to say, fulfilled her vow.\u00a0 For I know whom I have believed<\/em>, Paul wrote to Timothy, and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him against that Day<\/em>.[5]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n
