Paul wrote believers in Colossae (Colossians 2:16, 17 NET):<\/p>\n

do not let anyone judge you with respect to food or[1]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> drink, or in the matter of a feast, new moon,[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> or Sabbath days\u2014these are only the shadow of the things to come, but the reality is Christ![3]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Translating \u03c3\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b1<\/a> reality <\/em>has a nice philosophical ring that my mind likes, and it avoids any confusion that body of Christ<\/em> (\u03c3\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b1 \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 \u03a7\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6) referred to believers.\u00a0 Still, I think Paul was saying something much more visual: the body casting the shadow of the good things to come is Christ\u2019s, and any allusion to his death on the cross was completely intentional.<\/p>\n

The translators of the NASB caught the flavor of verse 16 as I understand it now: Therefore no one is to act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day<\/em>.[4]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Translating \u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03bd\u1f73\u03c4\u03c9<\/a> (a form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>)\u2014is to act as your judge\u2014<\/em>conveys Paul\u2019s (and the Holy Spirit\u2019s) intent that no one can condemn or absolve me in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day <\/em>but Christ alone.\u00a0 Consider Paul\u2019s attitude (1 Corinthians 4:4, 5 NET):<\/p>\n

For I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not acquitted because of this. \u00a0The one who judges (\u1f00\u03bd\u03b1\u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03bd\u03c9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03b1\u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> me is the Lord. \u00a0So then, do not judge (\u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03bd\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9)<\/em> anything before the time. \u00a0Wait until the Lord comes. \u00a0He will bring to light the hidden things of darkness and reveal the motives of hearts. \u00a0Then each will receive recognition from God.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Paul (and the Holy Spirit) hauled me in for questioning[5]<\/sup><\/a> when I thought they only meant no one <\/em>[may condemn me] in regard to food or drink <\/em>(1 Corinthians 10:24-33 NET):<\/p>\n

Do not seek your own good, but the good of the other person.[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> \u00a0Eat anything that is sold in the marketplace without questions of conscience, for the earth and its abundance are the Lord\u2019s. \u00a0If<\/a> an unbeliever invites you to dinner and you want to go, eat whatever is served without asking questions of conscience. \u00a0But if someone says to you, \u201cThis is from a sacrifice<\/a>,\u201d do not eat, because of the one who told you and because of conscience<\/a>\u2014 [Table<\/a>]<\/em> I do not mean yours but the other person\u2019s.<\/p>\n

For why is my freedom being judged (\u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03bd\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9)<\/em> by another\u2019s conscience? \u00a0If[7]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> I partake with thankfulness (\u03c7\u1f71\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>; KJV: <\/em>by grace)<\/em>, why am I blamed for the food that I give thanks for?<\/p>\n

So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God. \u00a0Do not give offense to Jews or Greeks or to the church of God, just as I also try to please everyone in all things. \u00a0I do not seek my own benefit,[8]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> but the benefit of many, so that they may be saved.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I actually intended to skip the next occurrence of \u05e9\u05c1\u05b8\u05d1\u05b7\u05ea\u0599 (Tanakh: rested<\/em>). \u00a0The rabbis who translated the Septuagint chose \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1f73\u03c0\u03b1\u03c5\u03c3\u03b5(\u03bd)<\/a> (a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03c0\u03b1\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) here and another form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03c0\u03b1\u03cd\u03c9 there.\u00a0 Since they made the connection, I won\u2019t ignore it.\u00a0 It occurred in the promise God made Himself after the flood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

I thought this anti-sabbath (\u05d9\u05b4\u05e9\u05c1\u05b0\u05d1\u05bc\u05bd\u05b9\u05ea\u05d5\u05bc negated) might be unnecessarily confusing.\u00a0 But \u201cI will not proceed hereafter to curse the earth because of the deeds of humans (\u03c4\u1f70 \u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03b1 \u03c4\u1ff6\u03bd \u1f00\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u1f7d\u03c0\u03c9\u03bd),\u201d was worth the price of admission.\u00a0 These deeds <\/em>(\u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03b1<\/a>, a form of \u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>) flow from the imagination of man<\/em> (\u1f00\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u1f7d\u03c0\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>, a form of \u1f04\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u03c9\u03c0\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>; NETS: humankind<\/em>) [which] is intently bent upon evil things from his youth<\/em>.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll pause here to acknowledge some additional words: \u05e9\u05c1\u05b7\u05d1\u05bc\u05b8\u05ea\u05a7\u05d5\u05b9\u05df (shabb\u00e2th\u00f4n<\/em>; Tanakh: solemn rest<\/em>) was translated \u1f00\u03bd\u1f71\u03c0\u03b1\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a> in the Septuagint.\u00a0 According to the Koine Greek Lexicon<\/a> online \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac\u03c0\u03b1\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2 and \u1f00\u03bd\u1f71\u03c0\u03b1\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2 are cognates<\/a>.\u00a0 Also, \u05e9\u05c1\u05b7\u05d1\u05bc\u05b7\u05ea (shabb\u00e2th<\/em>) was transliterated \u03c3\u1f71\u03b2\u03b2\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1<\/a> (a form of \u03c3\u03ac\u03b2\u03b2\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>).\u00a0 I puzzled over this transliteration, given the word order in the Septuagint, but it does seem to hold up two verses later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

As a native unbeliever I appreciate these empiricists who went out<\/em> to \u201cprove\u201d God\u2019s word.\u00a0 Of course if I were only a native unbeliever I probably wouldn\u2019t \u201cwaste\u201d my time on such \u201ccleverly concocted fables<\/a><\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 Since \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4<\/a> (ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>) had a completely different response I\u2019m compelled to reconsider my unbelief and, perhaps more importantly, highlight part of this story I had chosen to ignore.<\/p>\n

Sunday through Thursday Israel was under orders from Moses not to leave anything they gathered until the next morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

But \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4 (ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>) held his peace through this first round of empirical investigation.\u00a0 Of course, I can\u2019t say for certain that the people who angered Moses were empiricists doing empirical research, so I will call them unbelievers<\/em>, in the sense that they did not believe in the word of \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4 (ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>).\u00a0 I will distinguish the believers <\/em>from the unbelievers<\/em> in the only way believers in the word of \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4 (ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>) can be distinguished: believers<\/a> do what He says.\u00a0 As James wrote, Show me your faith without<\/a> works<\/a> and I will show you faith<\/a> by my works<\/em>.[10]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

The believers and unbelievers lived in two different realities: Only unbelievers had any sensual experience of the worms and rot the next morning.\u00a0 If they persisted in their unbelief they had five mornings of empirical evidence that the bread <\/em>which was kept over until morning on the Sabbath should not be eaten, despite their sensual observation that it did not rot, neither was there any worm therein<\/em>. \u00a0The believers on the other hand had six days of empirical evidence that the bread <\/em>was there to be gathered and eaten just as \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4 (ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>) promised through Moses, and every reason to trust Him<\/a> on the seventh morning.<\/p>\n
