As I continue to focus on the Sabbath (because it has so much material to access) I\u2019ve arrived at the first statement of the ten commandments in Exodus.\u00a0 So here is the shadow of the good things to come<\/em> of the Sabbath in its most definitive form.\u00a0 This section begins, And G-d spoke all these words, saying<\/em>:[1]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Do these translations effectively convey the truth that, The Sabbath was made for people, not<\/a> people for the Sabbath<\/em>[2]<\/sup><\/a>?\u00a0 This isn\u2019t a question I\u2019ll explore necessarily in this essay.\u00a0 It is a safeguard, along with Jesus\u2019 more general key to the Old Testament\u2014Do not be amazed that I said to you, \u2018You must all be born from above\u2019<\/em>,[3]<\/sup><\/a> that I might not be waylaid<\/a> by shadows while studying the law.<\/p>\n

I will note a new Hebrew word \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b8\u0596\u05e0\u05b7\u05d7<\/a> (n\u00fbach<\/em>) here: In this reprise of Genesis 2:2\u2014and rested on the seventh day<\/em>\u2014\u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b4\u05e9\u05c1\u05b0\u05d1\u05bc\u05b9\u05ea\u0599<\/a> (sh\u00e2bath<\/em>) has been replaced by \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b8\u0596\u05e0\u05b7\u05d7 (n\u00fbach<\/em>).\u00a0 And the ark rested<\/em> (n\u00fbach<\/em>, \u05d5\u05b7\u05ea\u05bc\u05b8\u05a4\u05e0\u05b7\u05d7<\/a>) in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat<\/em>.[4]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The rabbis returned to \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1f73\u03c0\u03b1\u03c5\u03c3\u03b5(\u03bd)<\/a> (a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03c0\u03b1\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) in the ten commandments: The Lord rested <\/em>on the seventh day; He did not \u201csabbatize<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0 When Noah\u2019s ark rested<\/em>, however, the rabbis chose \u1f10\u03ba\u1f71\u03b8\u03b9\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a> (a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03b8\u03af\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Another item of note: In the Masoretic text HaShem blessed the sabbath<\/em> (shabb\u00e2th<\/em>, \u05d4\u05b7\u05e9\u05bc\u05c1\u05b7\u05d1\u05bc\u05b8\u0596\u05ea<\/a>) day<\/em>.\u00a0 In the Septuagint the Lord blessed the seventh<\/em> (\u1f11\u03b2\u03b4\u1f79\u03bc\u03b7\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f15\u03b2\u03b4\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) day<\/em>.\u00a0 Since the Hebrew construction in Genesis 2:3 was identical except that \u05d4\u05b7\u05e9\u05bc\u05c1\u05b0\u05d1\u05b4\u05d9\u05e2\u05b4\u0594\u05d9<\/a> (she<\/sup>b\u0131\u0302y\u02bd\u0131\u0302y<\/em>) was replaced by \u05d4\u05b7\u05e9\u05bc\u05c1\u05b7\u05d1\u05bc\u05b8\u0596\u05ea (shabb\u00e2th<\/em>), it may seem that the Septuagint is the more original here. \u00a0The problem with that is Exodus 20:8 was also identical construction but the word was \u05d4\u05b7\u05e9\u05bc\u05c1\u05b7\u05d1\u05bc\u05b8\u059c\u05ea (shabb\u00e2th<\/em>), translated \u03c3\u03b1\u03b2\u03b2\u1f71\u03c4\u03c9\u03bd<\/a> (a form of \u03c3\u03ac\u03b2\u03b2\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>) in the Septuagint.\u00a0 I\u2019ll call it a toss-up<\/a>.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Consequently a Sabbath rest<\/em> (\u03c3\u03b1\u03b2\u03b2\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9\u03c3\u03bc\u1f78\u03c2<\/a>) remains for the people of God.\u00a0 For the one who enters God\u2019s rest<\/em> (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1f71\u03c0\u03b1\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac\u03c0\u03b1\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) has also rested<\/em> (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1f73\u03c0\u03b1\u03c5\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03c0\u03b1\u03cd\u03c9) from his works<\/em> (\u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03c9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>), just as God did from his own works<\/em>.[5]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

This is the advantage of studying the Sabbath<\/a>.\u00a0 The good things to come<\/a><\/em> of the Sabbath are stated as explicitly as its shadow in the law.\u00a0 I\u2019ll back up and take a run at this (Hebrews 4:1, 2 NET):<\/p>\n

Therefore we must be wary that, while the promise of entering his rest (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1f71\u03c0\u03b1\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac\u03c0\u03b1\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2)<\/em> remains open, none of you may seem to have come short of it. \u00a0For we had good news proclaimed (\u03b5\u1f50\u03b7\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03b9\u03c3\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03b5\u1f50\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03af\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>; KJV: <\/em>gospel preached)<\/em> to us just as they did. \u00a0But the message they heard did them no good, since they did not join in with[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> those who heard it in faith.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>The Greek word translated we must be wary<\/em> was \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03b7\u03b8\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a> (a form of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>), fear <\/em>in all its connotations of fearing <\/em>the Lord.\u00a0 The Greek word \u03c3\u03c5\u03b3\u03ba\u03b5\u03ba\u03c1\u03b1\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> (a form of \u03c3\u03c5\u03b3\u03ba\u03b5\u03c1\u03ac\u03bd\u03bd\u03c5\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>) is singular and was translated being mixed with <\/em>in the KJV: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it<\/em>.\u00a0 In other words, they didn\u2019t believe it.\u00a0 In the NET, however, \u03c3\u03c5\u03b3\u03ba\u03b5\u03ba\u03b5\u03c1\u03b1\u03c3\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2<\/a> (another form of \u03c3\u03c5\u03b3\u03ba\u03b5\u03c1\u03ac\u03bd\u03bd\u03c5\u03bc\u03b9) is plural and was translated as if it referred to the people rather than the message.\u00a0 So the message they heard did them no good, since they <\/em>didn\u2019t go to church.\u00a0 I\u2019m not so sure that \u03c3\u03c5\u03b3\u03ba\u03b5\u03ba\u03b5\u03c1\u03b1\u03c3\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2 was original here.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll back up a bit further (Hebrews 3:14-19 NET):<\/p>\n

For we have become partners with Christ, if in fact we hold our initial confidence firm until the end. \u00a0As it says, \u201cOh, that today you would listen as he speaks! \u00a0Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.\u201d \u00a0For which ones heard and rebelled? \u00a0Was it not all who came out of Egypt under Moses\u2019[7]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> leadership? \u00a0And against whom was God provoked for forty years? \u00a0Was it not those who sinned, whose dead bodies fell in the wilderness? \u00a0And to whom did he swear they would never enter into his rest (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1f71\u03c0\u03b1\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac\u03c0\u03b1\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2)<\/em>, except those who were disobedient (\u1f00\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03b8\u1f75\u03c3\u03b1\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03b8\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>; KJV: <\/em>believed not)<\/em>? \u00a0So we see that they could not enter because of unbelief (\u1f00\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03af\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

After establishing a causal relationship between \u1f00\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03af\u03b1<\/a> and \u1f00\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03b8\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>\u2014unbelief causes disobedience\u2014I don\u2019t see the author of Hebrews or the Holy Spirit muddying the waters with \u03c3\u03c5\u03b3\u03ba\u03b5\u03ba\u03b5\u03c1\u03b1\u03c3\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know what documents or reasons the Nestle-Aland<\/a> editors employed, but on the face of it crediting disobedience to a lack of church attendance sounds like a later alteration to the Greek text.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll continue from where I left off (Hebrews 4:3-8 NET):<\/p>\n

For we who have believed enter that rest (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1f71\u03c0\u03b1\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac\u03c0\u03b1\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2)<\/em>, as he has said, \u201cAs I swore in my anger, \u2018They will never enter my rest (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1f71\u03c0\u03b1\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac\u03c0\u03b1\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2)<\/em>!\u2019\u201d[8]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> \u00a0And yet God\u2019s works were accomplished from the foundation of the world. \u00a0For he has spoken somewhere about the seventh day in this way: \u201cAnd God rested (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1f73\u03c0\u03b1\u03c5\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03c0\u03b1\u03cd\u03c9)<\/em> on the seventh day from all his works,\u201d but to repeat the text cited earlier: \u201cThey will never enter my rest (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1f71\u03c0\u03b1\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac\u03c0\u03b1\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2)<\/em>!\u201d \u00a0Therefore it remains for some to enter it, yet those to whom it was previously proclaimed (\u03b5\u1f50\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03b9\u03c3\u03b8\u1f73\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u03b5\u1f50\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03af\u03b6\u03c9)<\/em> did not enter because of disobedience (\u1f00\u03c0\u03b5\u1f77\u03b8\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1<\/a>; KJV: <\/em>unbelief)<\/em>. \u00a0So God again ordains a certain day, \u201cToday,\u201d speaking through David[9]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> after so long a time, as in the words quoted before,[10]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> \u201cOh, that today you would listen as he speaks! \u00a0Do not harden your hearts.\u201d \u00a0For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken afterward about another day.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>For if Jesus had given them rest<\/em>, we read in the KJV, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day<\/em>.[11]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This is certainly the safer translation in the sense that the translators exerted the least interpretation over the Greek text.\u00a0 The only safer step I can imagine would have been to transliterate \u1f38\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c2 Iesous<\/em>. \u00a0Jesus and Joshua are \u1f38\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c2 in Greek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

It seems fairly obvious to translate \u1f38\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c2 Joshua <\/em>in Exodus 17:10.\u00a0 But what about Hebrews 4:8?\u00a0 God <\/em>was added by the NET translators.\u00a0 The KJV translators derived he <\/em>from \u1f10\u03bb\u1f71\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, the 3rd<\/sup> person singular form of the verb \u03bb\u03b1\u03bb\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Personally, I have no difficulty these days believing that He who was born into this world as \u1f38\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c2 rested on the seventh day from all his works<\/em> of creation, swore in<\/em> [his] anger, \u2018They will never enter my rest\u2019<\/em> in the time of Moses, did not grant the rest He was concerned with in the time of Joshua and promised another day of rest through his prophet David.\u00a0 But would I have understood that this particular passage referred to Joshua\u2019s conquest of Canaan if the NET translators (like most modern translators<\/a>) hadn\u2019t translated \u1f38\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c2 Joshua <\/em>and distinguished him from the one speaking in Psalm 95?\u00a0 I don\u2019t know, probably not until I began to study this deeply.<\/p>\n

<\/a>My entering into God’s rest differs from his rest in a significant way.\u00a0 He rested from works that were very good<\/em>: God saw all that he had made\u2014and it was very good!<\/em>[14]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I am eager<\/a> to rest from works of evil<\/a> at one extreme, hypocrisy<\/a> at the other (the works of an actor playing at righteousness) or some jumbled combination of the two everywhere in between.\u00a0 Wretched man that I am!<\/em> Paul lamented.\u00a0 Who will rescue me from this body of death?<\/em>[15]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Paul understood entering God’s rest this way (Galatians 2:20, 21 NET):<\/p>\n

I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. \u00a0So the life I now live in the body, I live because of the faithfulness of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. \u00a0I do not set aside God\u2019s grace, because if righteousness could come through the law, then Christ died for nothing!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Though he never<\/a> used the words, I think Paul wrote extensively about this Sabbath rest from the works of the flesh (Romans 3:30, 31; 13:9, 10; Galatians 5:16, 17; 5:22-25 NET):<\/p>\n

Since[16]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> God is one, he will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith. \u00a0Do we then nullify the law through faith? \u00a0Absolutely not! \u00a0Instead we uphold the law.[17]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

For the commandments, \u201cDo not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal<\/a>, do not covet,\u201d (and if there is any other commandment) are summed up in this, \u201cLove your neighbor as yourself<\/a>\u201d [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0Love does no wrong to a neighbor. \u00a0Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.<\/p>\n

But I say, live by the Spirit and you will not carry out the desires of the flesh. \u00a0For the flesh has desires that are opposed to the Spirit, and the Spirit has desires that are opposed to the flesh, for<\/a> these are in opposition to each other, so that you cannot do what<\/a> you want [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/p>\n

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness<\/a>, and self-control. \u00a0Against such things there is no law [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0Now those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. \u00a0If we live by the Spirit, let us also behave in accordance with the Spirit.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>And no creature is hidden from God, but everything is naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must render an account<\/em>.[18]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 He knows better than I do when I\u2019m relying on, resting in the fruit of his Spirit, or when I\u2019m trying to make myself righteous by obeying some rule<\/a>.\u00a0 And I am not so attuned to his Holy Spirit that I discern any of this apart from studying the Bible with Him (1 Corinthians 2:9-16<\/a>).\u00a0 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any double-edged sword, piercing even to the point of dividing soul<\/a> from spirit, and joints from marrow; it is able to judge <\/em>(\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03b9\u03ba\u1f78\u03c2<\/a>) the desires and thoughts of the heart<\/em>.[19]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n
