that, <em>The Sabbath was made for people, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/05\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-3\/#_ftn11\">not<\/a> people for the Sabbath<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/12\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-4\/#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a>?\u00a0 This isn\u2019t a question I\u2019ll explore necessarily in this essay.\u00a0 It is a safeguard, along with Jesus\u2019 more general key to the Old Testament\u2014<em>Do not be amazed that I said to you, \u2018You must all be born from above\u2019<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/12\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-4\/#_ftn3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a> that I might not be <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/04\/26\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-13\/#_waylaid\">waylaid<\/a> by shadows while studying the law.<\/p>\n<p>I will note a new Hebrew word <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lang\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?t=kjv&amp;strongs=h5117\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b8\u0596\u05e0\u05b7\u05d7<\/a> (<em>n\u00fbach<\/em>) here: In this reprise of Genesis 2:2\u2014<em>and rested on the seventh day<\/em>\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lang\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?t=kjv&amp;strongs=h7673\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b4\u05e9\u05c1\u05b0\u05d1\u05bc\u05b9\u05ea\u0599<\/a> (<em>sh\u00e2bath<\/em>) has been replaced by \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b8\u0596\u05e0\u05b7\u05d7 (<em>n\u00fbach<\/em>).\u00a0 <em>And the ark rested<\/em> (<em>n\u00fbach<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chabad.org\/library\/bible_cdo\/aid\/8172\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u05d5\u05b7\u05ea\u05bc\u05b8\u05a4\u05e0\u05b7\u05d7<\/a>) <em>in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/12\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-4\/#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The rabbis returned to <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/katep.html#katepause\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1f73\u03c0\u03b1\u03c5\u03c3\u03b5(\u03bd)<\/a> (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/katap.html#katapauw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03c0\u03b1\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) in the ten commandments: The Lord <em>rested <\/em>on the seventh day; He did not \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/05\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-3\/#_sabbatized\">sabbatize<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0 When Noah\u2019s ark <em>rested<\/em>, however, the rabbis chose <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/eka.html#ekaqise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f10\u03ba\u1f71\u03b8\u03b9\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a> (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kaq.html#kaqizw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03b8\u03af\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Another item of note: In the Masoretic text <em>HaShem blessed the sabbath<\/em> (<em>shabb\u00e2th<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lang\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?t=kjv&amp;strongs=h7676\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u05d4\u05b7\u05e9\u05bc\u05c1\u05b7\u05d1\u05bc\u05b8\u0596\u05ea<\/a>) <em>day<\/em>.\u00a0 In the Septuagint <em>the Lord blessed the seventh<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/eb.html#ebdomhn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f11\u03b2\u03b4\u1f79\u03bc\u03b7\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/eb.html#ebdomos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f15\u03b2\u03b4\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) <em>day<\/em>.\u00a0 Since the Hebrew construction in Genesis 2:3 was identical except that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lang\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?t=kjv&amp;strongs=h7637\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u05d4\u05b7\u05e9\u05bc\u05c1\u05b0\u05d1\u05b4\u05d9\u05e2\u05b4\u0594\u05d9<\/a> (<em>sh<sup>e<\/sup>b\u0131\u0302y\u02bd\u0131\u0302y<\/em>) was replaced by \u05d4\u05b7\u05e9\u05bc\u05c1\u05b7\u05d1\u05bc\u05b8\u0596\u05ea (<em>shabb\u00e2th<\/em>), it may seem that the Septuagint is the more original here. \u00a0The problem with that is Exodus 20:8 was also identical construction but the word was \u05d4\u05b7\u05e9\u05bc\u05c1\u05b7\u05d1\u05bc\u05b8\u059c\u05ea (<em>shabb\u00e2th<\/em>), translated <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sa.html#sabbatwn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c3\u03b1\u03b2\u03b2\u1f71\u03c4\u03c9\u03bd<\/a> (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sa.html#sabbaton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c3\u03ac\u03b2\u03b2\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>) in the Septuagint.\u00a0 I\u2019ll call it a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/toss-up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">toss-up<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_sabbathrest\"><\/a><em>Consequently a Sabbath rest<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sa.html#sabbatismos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c3\u03b1\u03b2\u03b2\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9\u03c3\u03bc\u1f78\u03c2<\/a>) <em>remains for the people of God.\u00a0 For the one who enters God\u2019s rest<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/katap.html#katapausin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1f71\u03c0\u03b1\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/katap.html#katapausis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac\u03c0\u03b1\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) <em>has also rested<\/em> (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1f73\u03c0\u03b1\u03c5\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03c0\u03b1\u03cd\u03c9) <em>from his works<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/er.html#ergwn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03c9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/er.html#ergon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>), <em>just as God did from his own works<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/12\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-4\/#_ftn5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is the advantage of studying the <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Colossians+2:16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sabbath<\/a>.\u00a0 The <em><a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Hebrews+10:1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">good things to come<\/a><\/em> of the Sabbath are stated as explicitly as its shadow in the law.\u00a0 I\u2019ll back up and take a run at this (Hebrews 4:1, 2 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Therefore we must be wary that, while the promise of entering his rest <em>(\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1f71\u03c0\u03b1\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac\u03c0\u03b1\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2)<\/em> remains open, none of you may seem to have come short of it. \u00a0For we had good news proclaimed <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/euh.html#euhggelismenoi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b5\u1f50\u03b7\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03b9\u03c3\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/eua.html#euaggelizw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b5\u1f50\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03af\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>; KJV: <\/em>gospel preached<em>)<\/em> to us just as they did. \u00a0But the message they heard did them no good, since they did not join in with<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/12\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-4\/#_ftn6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> those who heard it in faith.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a id=\"_mixed\"><\/a>The Greek word translated <em>we must be wary<\/em> was <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/fo.html#fobhqwmen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03b7\u03b8\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a> (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/fo.html#fobew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>), <em>fear <\/em>in all its connotations of <em>fearing <\/em>the Lord.\u00a0 The Greek word <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sugke.html#sugkekramenos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c3\u03c5\u03b3\u03ba\u03b5\u03ba\u03c1\u03b1\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sugke.html#sugkerannumi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c3\u03c5\u03b3\u03ba\u03b5\u03c1\u03ac\u03bd\u03bd\u03c5\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>) is singular and was translated <em>being mixed with <\/em>in the KJV: <em>but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it<\/em>.\u00a0 In other words, they didn\u2019t believe it.\u00a0 In the NET, however, <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sugke.html#sugkekerasmenous\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c3\u03c5\u03b3\u03ba\u03b5\u03ba\u03b5\u03c1\u03b1\u03c3\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2<\/a> (another form of \u03c3\u03c5\u03b3\u03ba\u03b5\u03c1\u03ac\u03bd\u03bd\u03c5\u03bc\u03b9) is plural and was translated as if it referred to the people rather than the message.\u00a0 So <em>the message they heard did them no good, since they <\/em>didn\u2019t go to church.\u00a0 I\u2019m not so sure that \u03c3\u03c5\u03b3\u03ba\u03b5\u03ba\u03b5\u03c1\u03b1\u03c3\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2 was original here.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll back up a bit further (Hebrews 3:14-19 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For we have become partners with Christ, if in fact we hold our initial confidence firm until the end. \u00a0As it says, \u201cOh, that today you would listen as he speaks! \u00a0Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.\u201d \u00a0For which ones heard and rebelled? \u00a0Was it not all who came out of Egypt under Moses\u2019<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/12\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-4\/#_ftn7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> leadership? \u00a0And against whom was God provoked for forty years? \u00a0Was it not those who sinned, whose dead bodies fell in the wilderness? \u00a0And to whom did he swear they would never enter into his rest <em>(\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1f71\u03c0\u03b1\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac\u03c0\u03b1\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2)<\/em>, except those who were disobedient <em>(<a know what documents or reasons the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Novum_Testamentum_Graece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nestle-Aland<\/a> editors employed, but on the of Moses, did not grant the rest He was concerned with in the time of Joshua and promised another day of rest through his prophet David.\u00a0 But would I have understood that this particular passage referred to Joshua\u2019s conquest of Canaan if the NET translators (like most modern <a href=\"https:\/\/biblehub.com\/hebrews\/4-8.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">translators<\/a>) hadn\u2019t translated \u1f38\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c2 <em>Joshua <\/em>and distinguished him from the one speaking in Psalm 95?\u00a0 I don\u2019t know, probably not until I began to study this deeply.<\/p>\n<p><em>Consequently a Sabbath rest remains for the people of God<\/em>, the writer of Hebrews continued. \u00a0<em>For the one who enters God\u2019s rest has also rested from his works, just as God did from his own works<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/12\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-4\/#_ftn12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>Come to me, all you who are weary and href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/05\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-3\/#_evil\">evil<\/a> at one extreme, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/01\/31\/hypocrisy\/\">hypocrisy<\/a> at the other (the works of an actor playing at righteousness) or some jumbled combination of the two everywhere in between.\u00a0 <em>Wretched man that I am!<\/em> Paul lamented.\u00a0 <em>Who will rescue me from this body of death?<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/12\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-4\/#_ftn15\"><sup>[15]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Paul understood entering God&#8217;s rest this way (Galatians 2:20, 21 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. \u00a0So the life I now live in the body, I live because of the faithfulness of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. \u00a0I do not set aside God\u2019s grace, because if righteousness could come through the law, then Christ died for nothing!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Though he <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/11\/02\/to-make-holy-part-3\/\">never<\/a> used the words, I think Paul wrote extensively about this Sabbath rest from the works of the flesh (Romans 3:30, 31; 13:9, 10; Galatians 5:16, 17; 5:22-25 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Since<em><a fulfillment of the law.<\/p>\n<p>But I say, live by the Spirit and you will not carry out the desires of the flesh. \u00a0For the flesh has desires that are opposed to the Spirit, and the Spirit has desires that are opposed to the flesh, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/09\/08\/atonement-part-5\/#_ftn38\">for<\/a> these are in opposition to each other, so
