href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/12\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-4\/#_test\">test<\/a>\u2014<em>The Sabbath was made for people, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/05\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-3\/#_ftn11\">not<\/a> people for the Sabbath<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/21\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-5\/#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a>\u2014in my opinion.\u00a0 Here <em>rest <\/em>was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lang\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?t=kjv&amp;strongs=h7673\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u05ea\u05bc\u05b4\u05e9\u05c1\u05b0\u05d1\u05bc\u0591\u05b9\u05ea<\/a> (<em>sh\u00e2bath<\/em>) in the clause <em>but on the seventh day thou shalt rest<\/em> in the Masoretic text, and <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/anap.html#anapausis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f00\u03bd\u1f71\u03c0\u03b1\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a> in the Greek root is the same in <em>Take my yoke on you and learn from me, because I am <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/02\/17\/father-forgive-them-part-6\/#_ftn28\">gentle<\/a> and humble in heart, and you will find rest<\/em> (<a ox and thine ass may have rest<\/em>\u2014was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lang\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?t=kjv&amp;strongs=h5117\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u05d9\u05b8\u05e0\u0597\u05d5\u05bc\u05d7\u05b7<\/a> (<em>n\u00fbach<\/em>) in the Masoretic text and <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/anap.html#anapaushtai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f00\u03bd\u03b1\u03c0\u03b1\u1f7b\u03c3\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a> (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/anap.html#anapauw\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/21\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-5\/#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0The Greek root is the same in <em>Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/anap.html#anapausw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f00\u03bd\u03b1\u03c0\u03b1\u1f7b\u03c3\u03c9<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03b1\u03c0\u03b1\u03cd\u03c9).<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/21\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-5\/#_ftn5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I looked up <em>may be refreshed<\/em> out of curiosity: It was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lang\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?t=kjv&amp;strongs=h5314\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u05d5\u05b0\u05d9\u05b4\u05e0\u05bc\u05b8\u05e4\u05b5\u05a5\u05e9\u05c1<\/a> (<em>n\u00e2phash<\/em>) in the Masoretic text and <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/anay.html#anayuxh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f00\u03bd\u03b1\u03c8\u1f7b\u03be\u1fc3<\/a> (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/anay.html#anayucw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f00\u03bd\u03b1\u03c8\u03cd\u03c7\u03c9<\/a>) in the Septuagint.\u00a0 There is only one occurrence of a form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03b1\u03c8\u03cd\u03c7\u03c9 in the New Testament (2 Timothy 1:16-18 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>May the Lord grant mercy to the family of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/aney.html#aneyuxe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f00\u03bd\u1f73\u03c8\u03c5\u03be\u03b5\u03bd<\/a> a form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03b1\u03c8\u03cd\u03c7\u03c9)<\/em> me and was not ashamed<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/21\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-5\/#_ftn6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> of my imprisonment. \u00a0But when he arrived in Rome, he eagerly<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/21\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-5\/#_ftn7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> searched for me and found me.\u00a0 May the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that day! \u00a0And you know very well all the ways he served me in Ephesus.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I was about to return to Exodus when a question came to mind: Did Paul consider Onesiphorus a fellow believer?\u00a0 <em>May the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that day!<\/em>\u00a0 Is that the way he would write about a fellow believer?\u00a0 I won\u2019t argue yea or nay here.\u00a0 But it sent me back to Jesus\u2019 teaching as it shed some light on something I had heard the night before.\u00a0 I\u2019ll try to put all this back into perspicuous form.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t listen to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Way_of_the_Master\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Todd Friel<\/a> often.\u00a0 He is a bit snarky for my taste.\u00a0 (Perhaps, I should say that his snarkiness appeals way too much to my flesh.) \u00a0Apparently, he did stand-up comedy<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/21\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-5\/#_ftn8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a> in another life.\u00a0 The night before I began this study a YouTube <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=toE9_S_3IYc&amp;t=142s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">video<\/a> titled, \u201cThe #1 reason there are so many FALSE Christian converts,\u201d was the clickbait I needed to deviate from my usual course.\u00a0 Mr. Friel explained:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The problem is they aren&#8217;t presenting the gospel&#8230;God will pull the rug out from under anybody to get their attention.\u00a0 But it&#8217;s not that He wants them to come to him so the rug can be replaced.\u00a0 He wants to get their attention so that they recognize: You&#8217;re at the end of your rope because I hold the rope, and one day I&#8217;m going to pull your rope in and I am going to judge you for every thought, word and deed.\u00a0 And if you are not hidden in the cleft of the rock, My Son the Lord Jesus Christ, I will grind you to powder.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The next morning Paul\u2019s prayer for Onesiphorus\u2014<em>May the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that day<\/em>\u2014sent me back to Jesus\u2019 description of <em>that day<\/em> (Matthew 25:31-40 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a id=\"_righteous\"><\/a>\u201cWhen the Son of Man comes in his glory and all the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/26\/romans-part-18\/#sdfootnote26sym\">angels<\/a> with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. \u00a0All the nations <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/26\/romans-part-18\/#sdfootnote27sym\">will be assembled<\/a> before him, and <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/26\/romans-part-18\/#sdfootnote28sym\">he will separate<\/a> people one from another like a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/26\/romans-part-18\/#_Table6\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. \u00a0Then the king will say to those on his right, \u2018Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. \u00a0For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/21\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-5\/#_ftn12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> me.\u2019 \u00a0Then the righteous will answer him, \u2018Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? \u00a0When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or naked and clothe you? \u00a0When did we see you sick<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/21\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-5\/#_ftn13\"><sup>[13]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> or in prison and visit you?\u2019 \u00a0And the king will answer them, \u2018I tell you the truth, just as you did it for one of the least of these brothers or sisters of mine, you did it for me.\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a id=\"_believers\"><\/a>The Greek word translated <em>brothers or sisters<\/em> was <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ade.html#adelfwn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f00\u03b4\u03b5\u03bb\u03c6\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a> (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ade.html#adelfos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f00\u03b4\u03b5\u03bb\u03c6\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>).\u00a0 Paul wrote believers in Rome (Romans 8:28-30 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>And we know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose, because those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ade.html#adelfois\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f00\u03b4\u03b5\u03bb\u03c6\u03bf\u1fd6\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03b4\u03b5\u03bb\u03c6\u03cc\u03c2)<\/em>. \u00a0And those he predestined, he also called; and those he called, he also justified; and those he justified, he also glorified.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Those who were <em>accursed <\/em>demonstrated no care or concern (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Matthew+25:42\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matthew 25:42-45<\/a>) for Jesus\u2019 brothers and sisters: <em>\u201cThen he will say to those on his left, \u2018Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire that has been prepared for the devil and his angels!\u2019<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/21\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-5\/#_ftn14\"><sup>[14]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0<em>And these will depart into eternal punishment, but the righteous <\/em>(e.g., those who demonstrated some level of care or concern for Jesus\u2019 brothers and sisters) <em>into eternal life.\u201d<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/21\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-5\/#_ftn15\"><sup>[15]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life<\/em>, Jesus taught his disciples, <em>so also the Son gives life to whomever he wishes<\/em> (John 5:21-24 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Furthermore, the Father does not judge anyone, but has assigned all judgment to the Son, so that all people will <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/08\/07\/hannahs-prayer-part-4\/#_ftn5\">honor<\/a> the Son just as they <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/08\/07\/hannahs-prayer-part-4\/#_ftn6\">honor<\/a> the Father. \u00a0The one who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/08\/07\/hannahs-prayer-part-4\/#_Table40\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tell you the solemn truth, the one who hears my message and believes the one who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned, but has crossed over from death to life.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Jesus defined <em>eternal life<\/em> for us in a prayer to his Father: <em>Now this is eternal life\u2014that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you sent<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/21\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-5\/#_ftn16\"><sup>[16]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And the Holy Spirit reminded me of more knowledge of the Judge the Father appointed, who He is, how He judges.\u00a0 Jesus taught his disciples (Matthew 10:40-42 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. \u00a0Whoever receives a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/21\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-5\/#_ftn17\"><sup>[17]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> a prophet\u2019s reward.\u00a0 Whoever receives a righteous person in the name of a righteous person will receive<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/21\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-5\/#_ftn18\"><sup>[18]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> a righteous person\u2019s reward. \u00a0And whoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little ones in the name of a disciple, I tell you the truth, he will never lose his reward.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I received a gospel similar to the one presented by Mr. Friel: Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ or burn in hell for all eternity.\u00a0 I was <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/09\/you-must-be-gentle-part-3\/#_heaven\">five<\/a>.\u00a0 I don\u2019t recall any of the emotional baggage that would be so offensive to adults.\u00a0 It was simply another fact, like cross at the crosswalk with the light, or a bus will run you down.\u00a0 But there was always an undercurrent, and since I wasn\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/09\/you-must-be-gentle-part-3\/#_outside\">availing<\/a> myself of the word of God as a precision diagnostic and surgical <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/12\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-4\/#_instrument\">instrument<\/a>, I didn\u2019t recognize that undercurrent as the <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Galatians+5:17\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">flesh<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Ephesians+4:22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">old man<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That <em>undercurrent <\/em>became progressively more vociferous throughout my young life:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>I wanted to save myself from an eternity in a lake of fire.\u00a0 And now, lo and behold, I find that I have become\u2014inadvertently\u2014a Christian!\u00a0 Not a day goes by that I don\u2019t discover yet another restriction in an endless list of prohibitions to which I must conform because I am a Christian!\u00a0 On top of that there is another endless list of things I must do because I am a Christian, chief among these is to rope my friends into a way of life I would not wish on my worst enemy.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If that <em>undercurrent <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Dh0210A-VZo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sounds<\/a> a little like <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joe_Pesci\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Pesci<\/a> in the movie <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/My_Cousin_Vinny\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">My Cousin Vinny<\/a>, well, that\u2019s a bit of literary license.\u00a0 As a hilariously triumphant example of all things working together for good, even that <em>undercurrent <\/em>has become a strong motivation to <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/12\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-4\/#_instrument\">rest<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/06\/24\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-1\/#_fruit\">fruit<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/John+16:7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Holy Spirit<\/a>\u2014once I began to recognize that the voice of that <em>undercurrent <\/em>wasn\u2019t mine.<\/p>\n<p>I was one of the most false converts to Christ.\u00a0 But God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit hasn\u2019t given up on me yet.\u00a0 Mr. Friel also mentioned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moodybible.org\/beliefs\/positional-statements\/substitutionary-atonement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">substitutionary atonement<\/a> as something important to the Gospel: <em>For I passed on to you as of first importance what I also received\u2014that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/21\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-5\/#_ftn19\"><sup>[19]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>For the wages of sin is death<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/21\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-5\/#_ftn20\"><sup>[20]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Clearly substitutionary atonement is <em>of first importance<\/em>.\u00a0 Given my <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/23\/who-am-i-part-3\/\">history<\/a>, however, I\u2019m wary whenever the doctrine of substitutionary atonement substitutes faith in punishment for faith in Jesus Christ.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tyndalearchive.com\/Brewer\/author.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Instone-Brewer<\/a> in his essay, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.premierchristianity.com\/Past-Issues\/2016\/May-2016\/Did-God-Punish-Jesus-on-the-Cross\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Did God Punish Jesus on the Cross?<\/a>,\u201d offers a better introduction to this concern than I <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/10\/18\/my-reasons-and-my-reason-part-5\/#_slow\">have done<\/a> or am doing here.<\/p>\n<p>None of this is to discourage anyone from answering the call of God in Jesus Christ, just a reminder that God is not the enemy here.\u00a0 Sin is the enemy.\u00a0 <em>For I passed on to you as of first importance what I also received\u2014<\/em><em>that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/15\/introduction\/#_ftn2\">day<\/a> according to the scriptures<\/em><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Grand Canyon<\/a> in Arizona is a visible memorial to a time when <em>The Lord regretted that he had made humankind on the earth, and he was highly refuse, not to consent.\u201d\u00a0 Likewise, I may have a different experience of God\u2019s patience than one who has never strayed far from Christian faith.<\/p>\n<p>To end this excursion where it began: the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/07\/31\/sexual-immorality-revisited-part-3\/#_grace\">man<\/a> who marveled at Jesus\u2019 definition of <em>eternal life<\/em> in my musical composition not only alerted me to how illiterate I had actually become, caring more for the sounds of words than their meaning, he also provided me with a handy tool\u2014<em>this is<\/em>\u2014to begin to understand the Bible better.\u00a0 This Jew who found philosophical comfort in Buddhism, who thought that salvation by faith was too non-human to be true the last time I had any contact with him, was a great help to me in my journey to know the only true God and Jesus Christ. \u00a0May the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that
