experience the credited <em>righteousness of God apart from the law<\/em>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/16\/romans-part-26\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> <em>namely, the righteousness of God through the faithfulness<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) <em>of Jesus Christ for <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/11\/12\/atonement-part-11\/#_ftn43\">all<\/a> who believe<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pisteuontas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pisteuw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>).<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" one goes about not letting sin reign in one\u2019s mortal body, <em>and do not present your members to sin as instruments to be used for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/16\/romans-part-26\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a> <em>those who are alive from the dead and your members to God as instruments to be used for righteousness<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/16\/romans-part-26\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 So I am picturing something like are alive from the dead and your members to God as instruments to be used for righteousness<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p align=\"right\">Romans 6:13b (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>It sounds so simple, but there is no door marked \u201csin\u201d beside a door marked \u201cGod\u201d where I might present myself for service.\u00a0 This transaction, if you will, takes place in the deepest, darkest places of an individual <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/14\/a-monotonous-cycle-part-2\/\"><em>born from above<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/11\/01\/the-will-of-god-jesus-part-3\/\">born of flesh and born of the Spirit<\/a>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/16\/romans-part-26\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a> moment by moment.\u00a0 In fact, Paul described this individual as a house divided, <em>For the flesh has desires that are opposed to the Spirit, and the Spirit has desires that are opposed to the flesh, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/09\/08\/atonement-part-5\/#_ftn38\">for<\/a> these are in opposition to each other, so that you cannot do <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/09\/08\/atonement-part-5\/#_ftn39\">what<\/a> you want<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/16\/romans-part-26\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>So then,<\/em> Paul concluded in Romans 7,<em> with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/16\/romans-part-26\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_personification\"><\/a>There is a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shoulder_angel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cartoon image<\/a> of a human being with a little devil <em>i<\/em> on one shoulder whispering in one ear and a little angel <em>i<\/em> whispering in the other.\u00a0 In the center between them am <em>I<\/em>, writ large, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/poems\/51642\/invictus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Master of My Fate<\/a>, choosing sin or righteousness. \u00a0With this self-image I discounted the value of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/15\/romans-part-25\/\">Step #1<\/a>\u2014to <em>consider<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/lo.html#logizesqe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03af\u03b6\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/lo.html#logizomai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03af\u03b6\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/15\/romans-part-25\/#sdfootnote9sym\">myself<\/a>]<em> dead<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ne.html#nekrous\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03bd\u03b5\u03ba\u03c1\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ne.html#nekros\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03bd\u03b5\u03ba\u03c1\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>) <em>to sin, but alive to God in Christ <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/15\/romans-part-25\/#sdfootnote10sym\">Jesus<\/a><\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/16\/romans-part-26\/#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a>\u2014as I magnified the importance of Step #2, not to <em>let sin reign in <\/em>[my]<em> mortal body so that <\/em>[I]<em> obey<\/em>[ed] <em>its desires<\/em>. \u00a0So I set out not to break, or to keep, the laws that define sin, and unwittingly played directly into sin\u2019s strength: <em>the power<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/du.html#dunamis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b4\u03cd\u03bd\u03b1\u03bc\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) <em>of sin is the law<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/16\/romans-part-26\/#sdfootnote11sym\" name=\"sdfootnote11anc\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Had I paid more attention to faith I might have grasped Paul\u2019s next point sooner.\u00a0 <em>For sin will have no mastery over you, because you are not under law<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/upo.html#upo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f51\u03c0\u1f78<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/no.html#nomon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>) <em>but<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/16\/romans-part-26\/#sdfootnote12sym\" name=\"sdfootnote12anc\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a> <em>under grace <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/upo.html#upo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f51\u03c0\u1f78<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ca.html#carin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>).<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/16\/romans-part-26\/#sdfootnote13sym\" name=\"sdfootnote13anc\"><sup>13<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_magical\"><\/a>This personification of sin was not magical thinking on Paul\u2019s part.\u00a0 What he was writing about actually becomes clearer in <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/18\/romans-part-28\/\">Romans 7<\/a>.\u00a0 The sin that will not master the one who believes in Jesus is nothing other than the <em>old man<\/em> that <em>was crucified with him so that the body<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sw.html#swma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c3\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>) <em>of sin would no longer dominate us<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/16\/romans-part-26\/#sdfootnote14sym\" name=\"sdfootnote14anc\"><sup>14<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I am not refereeing a battle of wills between a little devil <em>i<\/em> and a little angel <em>i<\/em>.\u00a0 <em>I<\/em> am the old man of sin, or <em>I<\/em> am the new man of the Spirit.\u00a0 Both are in this body (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sw.html#swma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c3\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>).\u00a0 Both want control.\u00a0 The old man was crucified by faith in Jesus Christ.\u00a0 The new man was created out of nothing through faith in Jesus Christ.\u00a0 <em>Believing<\/em> in Jesus Christ is far more important than anything either <em>I<\/em>, the dead and dying old man or the initially alien new man, might <em>do<\/em>.\u00a0[<strong>Addendum April 15, 2024<\/strong>: While I don&#8217;t want to minimize the importance of faith in Christ, recognizing the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/04\/14\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-10\/#_union\">union<\/a> between Christ and this <em>new man<\/em> causes me to wonder if I have overstated this a bit.] And I am persuaded that the illusion that <em>I<\/em> am a third something choosing between them is nothing more than the pride of life (1 John 2:15-17 NKJV).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Do not love the world or the things in the world.\u00a0 If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.\u00a0 For all that <em>is<\/em> in the world\u2014the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life\u2014is not of the Father but<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/16\/romans-part-26\/#sdfootnote15sym\" name=\"sdfootnote15anc\"><sup>15<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>is of the world. \u00a0And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>What then?<\/em> Paul continued.\u00a0 <em>Shall we sin<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/16\/romans-part-26\/#sdfootnote16sym\" name=\"sdfootnote16anc\"><sup>16<\/sup><\/a> <em>because we are not under law<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/upo.html#upo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f51\u03c0\u1f78<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/no.html#nomon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>) <em>but<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/16\/romans-part-26\/#sdfootnote17sym\" name=\"sdfootnote17anc\"><sup>17<\/sup><\/a> <em>under grace<\/em> (<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>)?\u00a0 <em>Absolutely not!<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/16\/romans-part-26\/#sdfootnote18sym\" name=\"sdfootnote18anc\"><sup>18<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Paul\u2019s reasoning here was a truism, a simple matter of definition.\u00a0 <em>Do you not know<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/oi.html#oidate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03bf\u1f34\u03b4\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/eid.html#eidw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b5\u1f34\u03b4\u03c9<\/a>; <em>i.e.<\/em>, <em>know by seeing<\/em>) <em>that if you present yourselves as obedient<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/upa.html#upakohn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03ae\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/upa.html#upakoh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03ae<\/a>) <em>slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/upa.html#upakouete\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/upa.html#upakouw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>), <em>either of sin<\/em> [the desire of the old man] <em>resulting in death, or obedience<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/upa.html#upakohs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u1fc6\u03c2<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/upa.html#upakoh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03ae<\/a>) [the desire of the new man] <em>resulting in righteousness?<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/16\/romans-part-26\/#sdfootnote19sym\" name=\"sdfootnote19anc\"><sup>19<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_doing\"><\/a>I am convinced that words like <em>obey<\/em>, <em>obedient<\/em>, and <em>obedience<\/em> with their insistent emphasis on <em>doing<\/em> are part of the things of this world, the pride of life where <em>I<\/em> am the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/poems\/51642\/invictus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Master of My Fate<\/a>, choosing to <em>do<\/em> the good or to <em>do<\/em> the evil.\u00a0 In Greek the word translated <em>obey<\/em> is <a href=\"https:\/\/biblehub.com\/greek\/5219.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>, <em>to hear under<\/em>, in other words <em>to trust<\/em>.\u00a0 The word translated <em>obedient<\/em> or <em>obedience<\/em> is <a href=\"https:\/\/biblehub.com\/greek\/5218.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03ae<\/a>, <em>attentive hearkening<\/em>, in other words <em>to believe<\/em>.\u00a0 These are other words, perhaps even better words, for <em>faith<\/em> and <em>believe<\/em> than <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pisteuw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>, for no one could mistake them for <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/mo.html#monon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03bc\u03cc\u03bd\u03bf\u03bd<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/James+2:24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>faith alone<\/em><\/a>), or <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/18\/romans-part-17\/\"><em>dead faith<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 And again, this makes perfect sense if one is interested in than being the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/08\/romans-part-9\/\">acts of an actor<\/a>, will flow naturally from who I <em>hear under<\/em> (<em>trust<\/em>, <em>hearken attentively<\/em> to, <em>believe<\/em>) through who I am (the new man born of the Spirit in the image and likeness of God) and then out into the world.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_rest\"><\/a>The writer of Hebrews described it this way: <em>Consequently a Sabbath rest remains for the people of God. \u00a0For the one who enters God\u2019s rest has also rested from his works, just as God did from his own works<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/16\/romans-part-26\/#sdfootnote22sym\" name=\"sdfootnote22anc\"><sup>22<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Even the law comes into sharper focus: <em>Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy<\/em>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/16\/romans-part-26\/#sdfootnote23sym\" name=\"sdfootnote23anc\"><sup>23<\/sup><\/a> not for a day of the week but for the remainder of a lifetime.\u00a0 And Jesus\u2019 word is fulfilled: <em>But the one who practices the truth comes to the light, so that it may be plainly evident that his deeds have been done in God<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/16\/romans-part-26\/#sdfootnote24sym\" name=\"sdfootnote24anc\"><sup>24<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It also explains Jesus\u2019 rather <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/11\/romans-part-11\/\">obstinate insistence<\/a> on doing good on the Sabbath day, despite the bitterness and resentment it aroused: <em>So it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" with the following warning (Hebrews 4:11-13 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Thus we must make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by following the same pattern of disobedience
