Therefore<\/em>, Paul continued, do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey<\/em>1<\/sup><\/a> (\u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) its desires<\/em> (\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u03af\u03b1\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u03af\u03b1<\/a>).2<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This is clearly Step #2 how to experience the credited righteousness of God apart from the law<\/em>,3<\/sup><\/a> namely, the righteousness of God through the faithfulness<\/em> (\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) of Jesus Christ for all<\/a> who believe<\/em> (\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>).4<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I think the next verse amplifies how one goes about not letting sin reign in one\u2019s mortal body, and do not present your members to sin as instruments to be used for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as<\/em>5<\/sup><\/a> those who are alive from the dead and your members to God as instruments to be used for righteousness<\/em>.6<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 So I am picturing something like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Step #2 to experience the righteousness of God through the faithfulness<\/em> of Jesus Christ for all who believe<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

It sounds so simple, but there is no door marked \u201csin\u201d beside a door marked \u201cGod\u201d where I might present myself for service.\u00a0 This transaction, if you will, takes place in the deepest, darkest places of an individual born from above<\/em><\/a>, born of flesh and born of the Spirit<\/a>,7<\/sup><\/a> moment by moment.\u00a0 In fact, Paul described this individual as a house divided, For the flesh has desires that are opposed to the Spirit, and the Spirit has desires that are opposed to the flesh, for<\/a> these are in opposition to each other, so that you cannot do what<\/a> you want<\/em>.8<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 So then,<\/em> Paul concluded in Romans 7, with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin<\/em>.9<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

<\/a>There is a cartoon image<\/a> of a human being with a little devil i<\/em> on one shoulder whispering in one ear and a little angel i<\/em> whispering in the other.\u00a0 In the center between them am I<\/em>, writ large, the Master of My Fate<\/a>, choosing sin or righteousness. \u00a0With this self-image I discounted the value of Step #1<\/a>\u2014to consider<\/em> (\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03af\u03b6\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03af\u03b6\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) [myself<\/a>] dead<\/em> (\u03bd\u03b5\u03ba\u03c1\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u03bd\u03b5\u03ba\u03c1\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>) to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus<\/a><\/em>10<\/sup><\/a>\u2014as I magnified the importance of Step #2, not to let sin reign in <\/em>[my] mortal body so that <\/em>[I] obey<\/em>[ed] its desires<\/em>. \u00a0So I set out not to break, or to keep, the laws that define sin, and unwittingly played directly into sin\u2019s strength: the power<\/em> (\u03b4\u03cd\u03bd\u03b1\u03bc\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) of sin is the law<\/em>.11<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Had I paid more attention to faith I might have grasped Paul\u2019s next point sooner.\u00a0 For sin will have no mastery over you, because you are not under law<\/em> (\u1f51\u03c0\u1f78<\/a> \u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>) but<\/em>12<\/sup><\/a> under grace <\/em>(\u1f51\u03c0\u1f78<\/a> \u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>).13<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

<\/a>This personification of sin was not magical thinking on Paul\u2019s part.\u00a0 What he was writing about actually becomes clearer in Romans 7<\/a>.\u00a0 The sin that will not master the one who believes in Jesus is nothing other than the old man<\/em> that was crucified with him so that the body<\/em> (\u03c3\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>) of sin would no longer dominate us<\/em>.14<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I am not refereeing a battle of wills between a little devil i<\/em> and a little angel i<\/em>.\u00a0 I<\/em> am the old man of sin, or I<\/em> am the new man of the Spirit.\u00a0 Both are in this body (\u03c3\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>).\u00a0 Both want control.\u00a0 The old man was crucified by faith in Jesus Christ.\u00a0 The new man was created out of nothing through faith in Jesus Christ.\u00a0 Believing<\/em> in Jesus Christ is far more important than anything either I<\/em>, the dead and dying old man or the initially alien new man, might do<\/em>.\u00a0[Addendum April 15, 2024<\/strong>: While I don’t want to minimize the importance of faith in Christ, recognizing the union<\/a> between Christ and this new man<\/em> causes me to wonder if I have overstated this a bit.] And I am persuaded that the illusion that I<\/em> am a third something choosing between them is nothing more than the pride of life (1 John 2:15-17 NKJV).<\/p>\n

Do not love the world or the things in the world.\u00a0 If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.\u00a0 For all that is<\/em> in the world\u2014the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life\u2014is not of the Father but15<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>is of the world. \u00a0And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What then?<\/em> Paul continued.\u00a0 Shall we sin<\/em>16<\/sup><\/a> because we are not under law<\/em> (\u1f51\u03c0\u1f78<\/a> \u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>) but<\/em>17<\/sup><\/a> under grace<\/em> (\u1f51\u03c0\u1f78<\/a> \u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>)?\u00a0 Absolutely not!<\/em>18<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Paul\u2019s reasoning here was a truism, a simple matter of definition.\u00a0 Do you not know<\/em> (\u03bf\u1f34\u03b4\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u03b5\u1f34\u03b4\u03c9<\/a>; i.e.<\/em>, know by seeing<\/em>) that if you present yourselves as obedient<\/em> (\u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03ae\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03ae<\/a>) slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey<\/em> (\u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, another form of \u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>), either of sin<\/em> [the desire of the old man] resulting in death, or obedience<\/em> (\u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u1fc6\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03ae<\/a>) [the desire of the new man] resulting in righteousness?<\/em>19<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

<\/a>I am convinced that words like obey<\/em>, obedient<\/em>, and obedience<\/em> with their insistent emphasis on doing<\/em> are part of the things of this world, the pride of life where I<\/em> am the Master of My Fate<\/a>, choosing to do<\/em> the good or to do<\/em> the evil.\u00a0 In Greek the word translated obey<\/em> is \u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>, to hear under<\/em>, in other words to trust<\/em>.\u00a0 The word translated obedient<\/em> or obedience<\/em> is \u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03ae<\/a>, attentive hearkening<\/em>, in other words to believe<\/em>.\u00a0 These are other words, perhaps even better words, for faith<\/em> and believe<\/em> than \u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2<\/a> and \u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>, for no one could mistake them for \u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a> \u03bc\u03cc\u03bd\u03bf\u03bd<\/a> (faith alone<\/em><\/a>), or dead faith<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 And again, this makes perfect sense if one is interested in experiencing the righteousness of God\u2026revealed in the gospel from faith<\/em> (\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) to faith<\/em> (\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>), just as it is written,<\/em> \u201cThe righteous by faith<\/a> <\/em><\/strong>(\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) will live<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d20<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

But thanks be to God that though you were slaves to sin, you obeyed<\/em> (\u1f51\u03c0\u03b7\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c3\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, another form of \u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) from the heart that pattern of teaching you were entrusted to, and having been freed from sin, you became enslaved to righteousness<\/em>.21<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 So I \u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c9, hear under<\/em>, trust<\/em>, the word of God rather than becoming \u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03ae to, hearkening attentively<\/em> to, believing<\/em>, the promptings and desires of the old man, the man of sin created in the image of Adam<\/a>.\u00a0 Of course I will do<\/em> things.\u00a0 But now those things, rather than being the acts of an actor<\/a>, will flow naturally from who I hear under<\/em> (trust<\/em>, hearken attentively<\/em> to, believe<\/em>) through who I am (the new man born of the Spirit in the image and likeness of God) and then out into the world.<\/p>\n

<\/a>The writer of Hebrews described it this way: Consequently a Sabbath rest remains for the people of God. \u00a0For the one who enters God\u2019s rest has also rested from his works, just as God did from his own works<\/em>.22<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Even the law comes into sharper focus: Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy<\/em>,23<\/sup><\/a> not for a day of the week but for the remainder of a lifetime.\u00a0 And Jesus\u2019 word is fulfilled: But the one who practices the truth comes to the light, so that it may be plainly evident that his deeds have been done in God<\/em>.24<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It also explains Jesus\u2019 rather obstinate insistence<\/a> on doing good on the Sabbath day, despite the bitterness and resentment it aroused: So it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath<\/em>.25<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

The writer of Hebrews continued with the following warning (Hebrews 4:11-13 NET):<\/p>\n

Thus we must make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by following the same pattern of disobedience [i.e., fearfully<\/a> refusing to enter the promised land]<\/em>. \u00a0For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any double-edged sword, piercing even to the point of dividing soul<\/a> from spirit, and joints from marrow; it is able to judge the desires and thoughts of the heart [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0And no creature is hidden from God, but everything is naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must render an account.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Paul realized he had not yet explained what would be explained in the next chapter.\u00a0 He recognized that his readers may misunderstand his words (Romans 6:19-23 NET).<\/p>\n

(I am speaking in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh.)\u00a0 For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification. \u00a0For when you were slaves of sin, you were free with regard to righteousness.\u00a0 So what benefit did you then reap from those things that you are now ashamed of?\u00a0 For the end of those things is death. \u00a0But now, freed from sin and enslaved to God, you have your benefit leading to sanctification, and the end is eternal life. \u00a0For the payoff of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
