Or do you not know, brothers and sisters<\/em>, Paul continued, (for I am speaking to those who know the law<\/em> [\u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>]), that the law<\/em> (\u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2) is lord over a person as long as he lives?<\/em>1<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Thus Paul introduced another value<\/a> of the death of those who were baptized into Christ Jesus\u2019 death<\/a>.2<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Then he used a metaphor to describe the life<\/em> of those who have been buried with him through baptism into death, in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so <\/em>[they] too may live a new life<\/em>3<\/sup><\/a> (Romans 7:2-4 NET).<\/p>\n

For a married woman is bound by law (\u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u1ff3<\/a>, another form of \u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> to her husband as long as he lives, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law (\u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>, another form of \u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> of the marriage. \u00a0So then, if she is joined to another man while her husband is alive, she will be called an adulteress.\u00a0 But if her husband dies, she is free from that law (\u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>, another form of\u00a0\u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em>, and if she is joined to another man, she is not an adulteress. \u00a0So, my brothers and sisters, you also died to the law (\u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u1ff3<\/a>, another form of\u00a0\u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> through the body of Christ, so that you could be joined to another, to the one who was raised from the dead, to bear fruit (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03c0\u03bf\u03c6\u03bf\u03c1\u03ae\u03c3\u03c9\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of\u00a0\u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03c0\u03bf\u03c6\u03bf\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a><\/em> to God.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I have unpacked this metaphor elsewhere<\/a> and won\u2019t do it again.\u00a0 In the context of this metaphor then the new man<\/em> born of the Spirit is a new woman<\/em> bringing forth righteousness<\/a>, the fruit of the Spirit<\/a>, as a wife bears her husband\u2019s children.\u00a0 There is a time lag between conception, coming to term and giving birth.\u00a0 But that time lag is no excuse, and certainly not a valid reason, for avoiding intimate relations with the Lord Jesus.\u00a0 On the contrary, the time one spends waiting and hoping for righteousness to come forth is best spent trusting Him, believing things like, For when we were in the flesh, the sinful <\/em>(\u03c0\u03b1\u03b8\u1f75\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03ac\u03b8\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>) desires <\/em>(\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03b9\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1<\/a>),<\/em> aroused by the law <\/em>(\u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>, another form of \u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>), were active in the members of our body to bear fruit <\/em>(\u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03c0\u03bf\u03c6\u03bf\u03c1\u1fc6\u03c3\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03c0\u03bf\u03c6\u03bf\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) for death. \u00a0But now we have been released from the law<\/em> (\u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>, another form of\u00a0\u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>), because we have died to what controlled us, so that we may serve in the new life of the Spirit<\/a> and not under the old written code<\/em>.4<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

What shall we say then?<\/em> Paul continued.\u00a0 Is the law <\/em>(\u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) sin?<\/em>5<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Paul had a bad reputation over his comments about the law.\u00a0 When he journeyed back to Jerusalem even the elders<\/em><\/a> of the church said to him (Acts 21:20b-24 NET):<\/p>\n

You see, brother, how many thousands of Jews<\/a> there are who have believed, and they are all ardent observers of the law (\u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>, another form of \u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>). \u00a0<\/em>They have been informed about you \u2013 that you teach all the Jews now living among the Gentiles to abandon Moses<\/a>, telling them not to circumcise their children or live according to our customs. \u00a0What then should we do<\/a>?\u00a0 They will no doubt hear that you have come [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0So do what we tell you: We have four men who have taken a vow; take them and purify yourself along with them and pay their expenses, so that they may have their heads shaved.6<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <\/em>Then everyone will know7<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>there is nothing in what they have been told about you, but that you yourself live in conformity with the law (\u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>).<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Paul, who wrote my heart\u2019s desire and prayer to God on behalf of my fellow Israelites is<\/a> for their salvation<\/em>,8<\/sup><\/a> complied with their request.\u00a0 But it didn\u2019t work.\u00a0 Jews from the province of Asia who had seen<\/em> [Paul] in the temple area stirred up the whole crowd and seized him, shouting, \u201cMen of Israel, help! \u00a0This is the man who teaches everyone everywhere<\/a> against our people, our law<\/em> (\u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>, another form of \u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>), and this sanctuary!\u201d<\/em>9<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0The mob<\/a> would have killed Paul if not for the intervention of the Roman commander of a cohort, his centurions and soldiers.\u00a0 Paul asked permission to speak to the crowd (Acts 22:1-21 NET):<\/p>\n

\u201cBrothers and fathers, listen to my defense that I now<\/a> make to you\u201d [Table<\/a>]. <\/em>(When they heard that he was addressing them in Aramaic [\u1f19\u03b2\u03c1\u03b1\u0390\u03b4\u03b9<\/a>, a form of\u00a0\u1f19\u03b2\u03c1\u03b1\u0390\u03c2<\/a>]<\/em>, they became even quieter.)\u00a0 Then Paul said, \u201cI am<\/a> a Jew, born in Tarsus in Cilicia, but brought up in this city, educated with strictness under Gamaliel according to the law (\u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>, another form of\u00a0\u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> of our ancestors, and was zealous for God just as all of you are today [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0I persecuted this Way even to the point of death, tying up both men and women and putting them in prison, as both the high priest and the whole council of elders can testify about me. \u00a0From them I also received letters to the brothers in Damascus, and I was on my way to make arrests there and bring the prisoners to Jerusalem to be punished. \u00a0As I was en route and near Damascus, about noon a very bright light from heaven suddenly flashed around me. \u00a0Then I fell<\/a> to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, \u2018Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?\u2019 [Table<\/a>] <\/em>I answered, \u2018Who are you, Lord?\u2019 He said to me, \u2018I am Jesus the Nazarene, whom you are persecuting.\u2019 \u00a0Those who were with me saw the light<\/a>, but did not understand the voice of the one who was speaking to me [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0So I asked, \u2018What should I do, Lord?\u2019 \u00a0The Lord said to me, \u2018Get up and go to Damascus; there you will be told about everything that you have been designated to do.\u2019 \u00a0Since I could not see because of the brilliance of that light, I came to Damascus led by the hand of those who were with me. \u00a0A man named Ananias, a devout<\/a> man according to the law (\u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em>, well spoken of by all the Jews who live there [Table<\/a>]<\/em>, came to me and stood beside me and said to me, \u2018Brother Saul, regain your sight!\u2019 \u00a0And at that very moment I looked up and saw him. \u00a0Then he said, \u2018The God of our ancestors has already chosen you to know his will (\u03b8\u03ad\u03bb\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>), <\/em>to see the Righteous One, and to hear a command from his mouth, because you will be his witness to all people of what you have seen and heard. \u00a0And now what are you waiting for? \u00a0Get up, be baptized, and have your sins washed away, calling on his10<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>name.\u2019 \u00a0When I returned to Jerusalem and was praying in the temple, I fell into a trance and saw the Lord saying to me, \u2018Hurry and get out of Jerusalem quickly, because they will not accept your testimony<\/a> about me\u2019 [Table<\/a>] \u00a0<\/em>I replied, \u2018Lord, they themselves know that I imprisoned and beat those in the various synagogues who believed in you. \u00a0And when the blood of your witness Stephen was shed,11<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>I myself was standing nearby, approving,12<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>and guarding the cloaks of those who were killing him.\u2019 \u00a0Then he said to me, \u2018Go, because I will send you far away to the Gentiles.\u2019\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The crowd was listening to him until he said this.\u00a0 Then they raised their voices and shouted, \u201cAway with this man from the earth!\u00a0 For he should not be allowed<\/em>13<\/sup><\/a> to live!\u201d<\/em>14<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Despite all this calumny, Paul found no fault with the law except that it was weakened through the flesh<\/em>.15<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 If we all were born only of the Spirit, and heard God say, You shall not commit adultery<\/em>,16<\/sup><\/a> we would all say, \u201cThank you, Lord, that\u2019s what I didn\u2019t want to do anyway!\u201d\u00a0 In answer to the question then, Is the law <\/em>(\u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) sin?<\/em> Paul said, Absolutely not!\u00a0 Certainly, I would not have known sin except through the law <\/em>(\u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>, another form of \u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>).17<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

I might feel in myself that it is wrong for you to commit adultery with my wife.\u00a0 But I may not feel that it is wrong for me to commit adultery with your wife apart from the law.\u00a0 After all, I have good reasons.\u00a0 Your wife wants me and loves me, and I her.\u00a0 And she is beautiful, far more beautiful than you can possibly deserve.\u00a0 Look at you.\u00a0 Look at the way you treat her.\u00a0 Would she have any interest in me at all if you deserved her and treated her right?\u00a0 I\u2019m doing you a favor, Pal.\u00a0 Face it!\u00a0 She\u2019s just more woman than you can handle.<\/p>\n

For indeed I would not have known what it means to desire something belonging to someone else<\/em>, Paul continued, if the law <\/em>(\u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)\u00a0had not said, \u201cDo not covet<\/strong>.\u201d<\/em>18<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0There is a darker side to the flesh born of Adam that hears of God\u2019s law, You shall not commit adultery<\/em>, and denies that there is a god to say such things, or if there is He doesn\u2019t know his place or He wouldn\u2019t dare say such things, or even more directly, \u201cOh, yeah! Watch this!\u201d\u00a0 But sin<\/em>, Paul wrote, seizing the opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of wrong desires<\/em>.19<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I have a fairly good idea of at least some of the things Paul coveted (1 Corinthians 9:4-7; 2 Corinthians 12:11, 15 NET).<\/p>\n

Do we not have the right to financial support? \u00a0Do we not have the right to the company of a believing wife, like the other apostles and the Lord\u2019s brothers and Cephas? \u00a0Or do only Barnabas and I lack the right not20<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>to work? \u00a0\u00a0Who ever serves in the army at his own expense?\u00a0 Who plants a vineyard and does not eat its fruit?21<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <\/em>Who tends a flock and does not consume its milk?<\/p>\n

I have become a fool<\/a>. \u00a0You yourselves forced me to do it, for I should have been commended by you.\u00a0 For I lack nothing in comparison to those \u201csuper<\/a>-apostles,\u201d even though I am nothing [Table]<\/a>..<\/em>.Now I will most gladly spend and be spent for your lives!\u00a0 If22<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>I love you more, am I to be loved less?23<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

For apart from the law <\/em>(\u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>, another form of \u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>), sin is dead<\/em>,24<\/sup><\/a> Paul continued.\u00a0 <\/a>Then he expounded on that theme from his own experience.\u00a0 And I was once alive apart from the law<\/em> (\u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>, another form of\u00a0\u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>), but with the coming of the commandment sin became alive and I died. \u00a0So I found that the very commandment that was intended to bring life brought death! \u00a0For sin, seizing the opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it I died<\/em>.25<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And again<\/a>, I think this personification of sin is a reference to the old man<\/em> that was crucified with Christ.26<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This all becomes clearer a bit later in Romans 7<\/a>.<\/p>\n

So then, the law<\/em> (\u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous, and good<\/em>,27<\/sup><\/a> Paul concluded.<\/p>\n
