The next form of \u1f01\u03b3\u03b9\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9 I want to consider is found in Jesus\u2019 prayer to his Father: Set them apart<\/em> (\u1f01\u03b3\u1f77\u03b1\u03c3\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f01\u03b3\u03b9\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>) in the truth; your word is truth<\/em>.[1]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But I\u2019m making a slow pilgrimage through his prayer because I believe I can know<\/a> his holiness <\/em>here.\u00a0 Jesus prayer continued (John 17:14, 15 NET):<\/p>\n

I have given them your word, and the world has hated them, because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. \u00a0I am not asking you to take them out of the world, but that you keep them safe from the evil one.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Greek words translated your word<\/em> were \u03c4\u1f78\u03bd<\/a> \u03bb\u1f79\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd<\/a> \u03c3\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>.\u00a0 Jesus had spoken to a Samaritan woman (John 4:39-42 NET):<\/p>\n

Now many Samaritans[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> from that town believed in him because of the report of the woman who testified, \u201cHe told me everything I ever[3]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> did.\u201d \u00a0So when the Samaritans[4]<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>came to him, they began asking him to stay with them. \u00a0He stayed there two days, and because of his word many more believed. \u00a0They said to the woman, \u201cNo longer do we believe because of your words, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this one really is the Savior of the world.\u201d[5]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Greek words translated the report of the woman<\/em> were \u03c4\u1f78\u03bd \u03bb\u1f79\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd \u03c4\u1fc6\u03c2<\/a> \u03b3\u03c5\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9\u03ba\u1f78\u03c2<\/a>.\u00a0 So I have the word <\/em>of the woman to contrast with the word <\/em>of Jesus\u2019 father: Come, see a man who told me everything<\/a> I ever did<\/em>, the woman told her friends. \u00a0Surely he can\u2019t be the Messiah <\/em>(\u1f41<\/a> \u03c7\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u1f79\u03c2<\/a>), can he?<\/em>[6]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Her friends believed her enough to obey her: So<\/em>[7]<\/sup><\/a> they left the town and began coming to him<\/em>.[8]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0I should back up to point out that the woman\u2019s word which her friends obeyed was a relatively tentative presentation of Jesus\u2019 word (John 4:25, 26 NET):<\/p>\n

The woman said to [Jesus]<\/em>, \u201cI know that Messiah[9]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> is coming\u201d (the one called Christ); \u201cwhenever he comes, he will tell us everything.\u201d[10]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> \u00a0Jesus said to her, \u201cI, the one speaking to you, am he.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The woman\u2019s friends also demonstrated their faith in her word, a relatively tentative presentation of Jesus\u2019 word, by asking Jesus to stay<\/em> with them.\u00a0 The Greek word translated to stay<\/em> was \u03bc\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9<\/a> (a form of \u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>). \u00a0Other forms of \u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03c9 occur in Jesus\u2019 teaching to his disciples (John 15:4 NET):<\/p>\n

Remain (\u03bc\u03b5\u1f77\u03bd\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, another form of \u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03c9)<\/em> in me, and I will remain in you. \u00a0Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it remains[11]<\/sup><\/a> (\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u1fc3<\/a>, another form of \u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03c9)<\/em> in the vine, so neither can you unless you remain[12]<\/sup><\/a> (\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, another form of \u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03c9)<\/em> in me.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Jesus stayed <\/em>(\u1f14\u03bc\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03c9) there two days, and because of his word<\/em> (\u03c4\u1f78\u03bd \u03bb\u1f79\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>) many more believed<\/em>.\u00a0 After two days these Samaritans had acquired two important concepts: 1) They had learned to value Jesus\u2019 word above that of the woman.\u00a0 This is my daily prayer: \u201cPlease let any who read these essays hear your voice instead of mine.\u201d\u00a0 And, 2) they knew Jesus as the Savior of the world<\/em> (\u03bf<\/a> \u03c3\u03c9\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1<\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5<\/a> \u03ba\u03bf\u03c3\u03bc\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>).<\/p>\n

These Samaritans didn\u2019t know Jesus as a conqueror who would overthrow the Romans and bring the whole world into submission to the descendants of Israel.\u00a0 They knew Him as the Savior of the world <\/em>at a time when his own hand-picked disciples were chomping at the bit for Him to get down to the serious messianic business of overthrowing the Romans and restoring the kingdom to Israel<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 And lest I suppose that these were just ignorant Samaritans<\/a>, their knowledge agreed with the the word of God through Jesus and a much more spiritually mature John, one of the original twelve disciples: For God did not send his<\/a> Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world should be saved through him<\/em> (\u03c3\u03c9\u03b8\u1fc7<\/a> \u1f41 \u03ba\u1f79\u03c3\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> \u03b4\u03b9\u1fbf<\/a> \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>).[13]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Here is the next occurrence of \u03bb\u1f79\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd in John\u2019s Gospel narrative (John 5:24-30 NET):<\/p>\n

\u201cI tell you the solemn truth, the one who hears my message and believes the one who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned (\u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em>, but has crossed over from death to life. \u00a0I tell you the solemn truth, a time is coming\u2014and is now here\u2014when the dead will hear[14]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. \u00a0For just as the Father has life in himself, thus he has granted the Son to have life in himself, and he has granted the Son authority to execute judgment (\u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd, a form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2)<\/em>, because he is the Son of Man.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo not be amazed at this, because a time is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear[15]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> his voice and will come out\u2014the ones who have done what is good (\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03b8\u1f70<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03b8\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> to the resurrection resulting in life, and the ones who have done what is evil (\u03c6\u03b1\u1fe6\u03bb\u03b1<\/a>, a form of \u03c6\u03b1\u1fe6\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> to the resurrection resulting in condemnation (\u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03c3\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2)<\/em>. \u00a0I can do nothing on my own initiative. \u00a0Just as I hear, I judge (\u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em>, and my judgment (\u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2)<\/em> is just, because I do not seek my own will, but the will of the one[16]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> who sent me.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Greek words translated my message<\/em> were \u03c4\u1f78\u03bd \u03bb\u1f79\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd \u03bc\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>.\u00a0 I assume that the dead<\/em>, in the dead<\/em> (\u03bd\u03b5\u03ba\u03c1\u03bf\u1f76<\/a>, a form of \u03bd\u03b5\u03ba\u03c1\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>) will hear the voice of the Son of God<\/em>, referred to something more like what Paul meant when he wrote to believers in Ephesus: you were dead<\/em> (\u03bd\u03b5\u03ba\u03c1\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u03bd\u03b5\u03ba\u03c1\u03cc\u03c2) in your<\/a> offenses and sins<\/em>[17]<\/sup><\/a> (Ephesians 2:1-10<\/a>). \u00a0And all who are in the tombs will hear his voice<\/em> seems fairly obvious in its reference to something more like Matthew\u2019s Gospel account (Matthew 27:50-53<\/a>). \u00a0The implication is consistent that to hear Jesus\u2019 word is a divinely facilitated activity: So then faith comes by hearing<\/em> (\u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u1fc6\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u03ae<\/a>), and hearing<\/em> (\u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u1f74) by the word<\/em> (\u03c1\u1f75\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u1fe5\u1fc6\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>) of God<\/a><\/em>.[18]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

The human part in hearing is to sit and listen, or read and study as the case may be, rather than to hold one\u2019s ears and flee in terror.\u00a0 And if one is as slow and stupid as I have been, hearing may take longer relative to another less prone to argument.\u00a0 One of my best teachers in college had been a mediocre student.\u00a0 It made him very aware as a teacher of the information that had confused him as a student.<\/p>\n

The dead will hear the voice of the Son of God<\/em> who has been granted authority to execute judgment<\/em>, because he is the Son of Man<\/em>.\u00a0 I can do nothing on my own initiative<\/em>, the Judge proclaimed.\u00a0 Just as I hear<\/em> (\u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u1f7b\u03c9<\/a>), I judge<\/em> (\u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>), and my judgment<\/em> (\u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2) is just, because I do not seek my own will, but the will of the one who sent me<\/em>\u2026not<\/em>\u2026to condemn <\/em>(\u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03bd\u1fc3<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9) the world, but that the world should be saved through <\/em>[me].\u00a0 The words are important.<\/p>\n

The Judge whom God sent that the world should be saved through him<\/em> continued (John 5:36-40 NET):<\/p>\n

I have a testimony greater than that from John (John 5:33-35<\/a>; 1:6-8<\/a>; 1:19-37<\/a>; 3:22-36<\/a>)<\/em>. \u00a0For the deeds that the Father has assigned me to complete\u2014the deeds I[19]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> am now doing\u2014testify about me that the Father has sent me. \u00a0And the Father who sent me has himself[20]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> testified about me. \u00a0You people have never heard (\u1f00\u03ba\u03b7\u03ba\u1f79\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c9)<\/em> his voice nor seen his form at any time, nor do you have his word residing in you, because you do not believe the one whom he sent. \u00a0You study[21]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> the scriptures thoroughly because you think in them you possess eternal life (\u03b6\u03c9\u1f74\u03bd<\/a> \u03b1\u1f30\u1f7d\u03bd\u03b9\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>)<\/em>, and it is these same scriptures that testify about me, but you are not willing to come to me so that you may have life.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Greek words translated his word<\/em> were \u03c4\u1f78\u03bd \u03bb\u1f79\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6, and residing <\/em>was \u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1<\/a> (another form of \u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03c9).\u00a0 When I studied the Bible searching for rules to obey I wasn\u2019t consciously seeking to know<\/em>\u2026the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom <\/em>[He] sent<\/em>,[22]<\/sup><\/a> \u1f21<\/a> \u03b1\u1f30\u1f7d\u03bd\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> \u03b6\u03c9\u1f74<\/a>, eternal life<\/em> according to Jesus in prayer to his Father. \u00a0\u00a0So despite my best efforts to curry favor with God by finding more and more rules to (dis-<\/em>)obey, I did begin to know Him.\u00a0 And it was a little frustrating<\/a> to me that He showed mercy far too often rather than meting out the punishment the law required.<\/p>\n

Why don\u2019t you understand what I am saying?<\/em> Jesus continued (John 8:43-47 NET):<\/p>\n

It is because you cannot accept (\u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u1f7b\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c9)<\/em> my teaching. \u00a0You people are from your father<\/a> the devil<\/a>, and you want to do what your father desires.\u00a0 He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not<\/a> uphold the truth, because there is no truth in him.\u00a0 Whenever he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of lies [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0But because I am telling you the truth, you do not believe me. \u00a0Who among you can prove me guilty of any sin?\u00a0 If[23]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> I am telling you the truth, why don\u2019t you believe me? \u00a0The one who belongs to God listens and responds to (\u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u1f7b\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c9)<\/em> God\u2019s words (\u03c1\u1f75\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1<\/a>, another form of \u1fe5\u1fc6\u03bc\u03b1)<\/em>.\u00a0 You don\u2019t listen and respond (\u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u1f7b\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c9)<\/em>, because you don\u2019t belong to God.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Greek words translated my teaching<\/em> were \u03c4\u1f78\u03bd \u03bb\u1f79\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd \u03c4\u1f78\u03bd \u1f10\u03bc\u1f79\u03bd<\/a>.\u00a0 Jesus spoke to those Judeans who had believed him<\/a><\/em>, but this truth <\/em>applies to all human beings not yet born from above<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 And I would encourage those born from above<\/em> to take it to heart as well.\u00a0 I\u2019ve heard some claim freedom from all residue of sin and the old nature, but it\u2019s not my experience.\u00a0 I agree with Paul that when I want to do good <\/em>(\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u1f79\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>), evil <\/em>(\u03ba\u03b1\u03ba\u1f78\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03ba\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>) is present with me<\/em>.[24]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Evil doesn\u2019t always win out, in the sense that it is what comes out of me, yet it is always an option but for the grace of God, the fruit of his Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:16-23<\/a>).<\/p>\n

I am not trying to get <\/em>(\u03b6\u03b7\u03c4\u1ff6<\/a>, a form of \u03b6\u03b7\u03c4\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) praise for myself<\/em>, Jesus continued (John 8:50-56 NET).<\/p>\n

There is one who demands (\u03b6\u03b7\u03c4\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03b6\u03b7\u03c4\u03ad\u03c9)<\/em> it, and he also judges (\u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03bd\u03c9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em>. \u00a0I tell you the solemn truth, if anyone obeys (\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u1f75\u03c3\u1fc3<\/a>, a form of \u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> my teaching,[25]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> he will never see death.\u201d[26]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

Then[27]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> the Judeans responded, \u201cNow we know you\u2019re possessed by a demon! \u00a0Both Abraham and the prophets died, and yet you say, \u2018If anyone obeys (\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u1f75\u03c3\u1fc3, a form of \u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9)<\/em> my teaching, he will never experience death.\u2019[28]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> \u00a0You aren\u2019t greater than our father Abraham who died, are you? \u00a0And the prophets died too! \u00a0Who do you<\/a> claim to be?\u201d [Table<\/a>]<\/em> \u00a0Jesus replied, \u201cIf I glorify myself, my glory is worthless. \u00a0The one who glorifies[29]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> me is my Father, about whom you people say, \u2018He is our[30]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> God.\u2019 \u00a0Yet you do not know him, but I know him. \u00a0If[31]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> I were to say that I do not know him, I would be a liar like you.[32]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> \u00a0But[33]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> I do know him, and I obey (\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u1ff6<\/a>, another form of \u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9)<\/em> his teaching. \u00a0Your father Abraham was overjoyed to see my day, and he saw it<\/a> and was glad.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Greek words translated my teaching<\/em> were \u03c4\u1f78\u03bd \u1f10\u03bc\u1f78\u03bd \u03bb\u1f79\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd and \u03c4\u1f78\u03bd \u03bb\u1f79\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd \u03bc\u03bf\u03c5 respectively, and his teaching <\/em>was \u03c4\u1f78\u03bd \u03bb\u1f79\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6.\u00a0 Jesus continued (John 14:23-26 NET):<\/p>\n

\u201cIf anyone loves me, he will obey (\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u1f75\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9)<\/em> my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and take up<\/a> residence with him [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0The person who does not love me does not obey (\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03b5\u1fd6<\/a>, another form of \u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9)<\/em> my words. \u00a0And the word you hear (\u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u1f7b\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> is not mine, but the Father\u2019s who sent me.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have spoken these things while staying (\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03c9\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03c9)<\/em> with you. \u00a0But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and will cause you to remember everything I<\/a> said to you [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Greek words translated my word<\/em> were \u03c4\u1f78\u03bd \u03bb\u1f79\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd \u03bc\u03bf\u03c5 and my words<\/em> were \u03c4\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2<\/a> \u03bb\u1f79\u03b3\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2<\/a> \u03bc\u03bf\u03c5.\u00a0 When Jesus speaks, however, the word <\/em>(\u1f41<\/a> \u03bb\u1f79\u03b3\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) you hear is not mine <\/em>(\u03bf\u1f50\u03ba<\/a> \u1f14\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03bd<\/a> \u1f10\u03bc\u1f78\u03c2<\/a>), but the Father\u2019s who sent me<\/em>.\u00a0 He continued (John 15:1-4 NET):<\/p>\n

I am the true vine and my Father is the gardener. \u00a0He takes away every branch that does not bear fruit in me. \u00a0He prunes every branch that bears fruit so that it will bear more fruit. \u00a0You are clean already because of the word that I have spoken to you. \u00a0Remain in me, and I will remain in you. \u00a0Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>I think it\u2019s prudent here to highlight all of the meanings of the Greek word translated takes away<\/em> (\u03b1\u1f34\u03c1\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03b1\u1f34\u03c1\u03c9<\/a>): \u201cto lift up, take up, pick up; to look up (in prayer); to move upward, raise vertically; to raise to a higher level; to take up and carry along; to lift up and carry away, remove; to take away, remove (no suggestion of lifting up); to bear with, endure; to carry, transport; to bear and uphold; to be dressed as an office-bearer; to cause to emerge.\u201d\u00a0 If one fears punishment for a failure to do good works then takes away<\/em> may be an appropriate understanding of \u03b1\u1f34\u03c1\u03b5\u03b9.\u00a0 And I have accepted this understanding uncritically until this very moment.<\/p>\n

I plan to do a thorough word study<\/a> of forms of \u03b1\u1f34\u03c1\u03c9 in another essay. \u00a0Here I\u2019ll propose that if one has begun to know the love of God through Jesus Christ, There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment <\/em>(\u03ba\u1f79\u03bb\u03b1\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03cc\u03bb\u03b1\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>).[34]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 In that light I\u2019m willing to consider some of the other meanings of \u03b1\u1f34\u03c1\u03b5\u03b9 that may describe the Father\u2019s activity in my life better: \u201cto lift up, take up, pick up; to move upward, raise vertically; to raise to a higher level; to take up and carry along; to bear with, endure; to carry, transport; to bear and uphold; to cause to emerge.\u201d<\/p>\n
