Jesus gave his disciples the following rule (Matthew 10:32, 33 NET):<\/p>\n

Whoever, then, acknowledges (\u1f41\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u1f75\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of\u00a0\u1f41\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>me before people, I will acknowledge (\u1f41\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u1f75\u03c3\u03c9<\/a>, another form of\u00a0\u1f41\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9)<\/em> before my Father in heaven.1<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0<\/em>But whoever denies (\u1f00\u03c1\u03bd\u1f75\u03c3\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of\u00a0\u1f00\u03c1\u03bd\u03ad\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) <\/em>me before people, I will deny (\u1f00\u03c1\u03bd\u1f75\u03c3\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form \u1f00\u03c1\u03bd\u03ad\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9)<\/em> him also before my Father in heaven.2<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This rule of \u1f41\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9 and \u1f00\u03c1\u03bd\u03ad\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9 is simple and easy to understand; its justice and fairness is self-evident.\u00a0 But Jesus didn\u2019t follow this rule when Peter fell afoul of it (Matthew 26:31-35 NET):<\/p>\n

Then Jesus said to them, \u201cThis night you will all fall away because of me, for it is written: \u2018I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.<\/strong>\u20193<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0<\/em>But after I am raised, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.\u201d \u00a0Peter said to him, \u201cIf4<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0<\/em>they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away!\u201d \u00a0Jesus said to him, \u201cI tell you the truth, on this night, before the rooster crows, you will deny (\u1f00\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03bd\u1f75\u03c3\u1fc3<\/a>, a form of\u00a0\u1f00\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03bd\u03ad\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) <\/em>me three times.\u201d \u00a0Peter said to him, \u201cEven if I must die with you, I will never deny5<\/sup><\/a> (\u1f00\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03bd\u1f75\u03c3\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03bd\u03ad\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9)<\/em> you.\u201d\u00a0 And6<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>all the disciples said7<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>the same thing.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Jesus\u2019 faith was in the literal truth of the prophetic scriptures, Zechariah 13:7<\/a> in particular here.\u00a0 Peter trusted his feelings.\u00a0 I have no doubt he was sincere.\u00a0 Peter was ready to make good on his boast, if only he could go down swinging (Matthew 26:51-54 NET):<\/p>\n

But one of those with Jesus grabbed his sword, drew it out, and struck the high priest\u2019s slave, cutting off his ear. \u00a0Then Jesus said to him, \u201cPut your sword back in its place!\u00a0 For all who take hold of the sword will die by the sword.8<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>Or do you think that I cannot call on my Father, and that he would send me more than9<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>twelve10<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>legions11<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>of angels right now? \u00a0How then would the scriptures that say it must happen this way be fulfilled (\u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03c9\u03b8\u1ff6\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of\u00a0\u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em>?\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Jesus\u2019 concern was fulfilling scripture.\u00a0 Though Matthew, Mark and Luke would not name Peter, presumably while he was still alive, John did (John 18:10 NET):<\/p>\n

Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, pulled it out and struck the high priest\u2019s slave, cutting off his right ear.12<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>(Now the slave\u2019s name was Malchus.)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Peter\u2019s concern was fulfilling his own word.\u00a0 If Jesus rebuked me like this when I had decided to die fighting, it would take the starch out of my sails, to say the least.\u00a0 And that\u2019s apparently what it did to Peter (Matthew 26:69-75 NET):<\/p>\n

Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard.\u00a0 A slave girl came to him and said, \u201cYou also were with Jesus the Galilean.\u201d \u00a0But he denied (\u1f20\u03c1\u03bd\u1f75\u03c3\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf<\/a>, another form of\u00a0\u1f00\u03c1\u03bd\u03ad\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>)<\/em> it in front of them13<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>all: \u201cI don\u2019t know what you\u2019re talking about!\u201d \u00a0When he14<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>went out to the gateway, another slave girl saw him and said to the people there, \u201cThis man15<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>was with Jesus the Nazarene.\u201d \u00a0He denied (\u1f20\u03c1\u03bd\u1f75\u03c3\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf, another form of\u00a0\u1f00\u03c1\u03bd\u03ad\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9)<\/em> it again with16<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>an oath, \u201cI do not know the man!\u201d \u00a0After a little while, those standing there came up to Peter and said, \u201cYou really are one of them too \u2013 even your accent gives you away!\u201d \u00a0At that he began to curse,17<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>and he swore with an oath, \u201cI do not know the man!\u201d\u00a0 At that moment a rooster crowed. \u00a0Then Peter remembered what Jesus had said:18<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>\u201cBefore the rooster crows, you will deny (\u1f00\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03bd\u1f75\u03c3\u1fc3<\/a>, a form of\u00a0\u1f00\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03bd\u03ad\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>)<\/em> me three times.\u201d\u00a0 And he went outside and wept bitterly.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

According to the rule of \u1f41\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9 and \u1f00\u03c1\u03bd\u03ad\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9 Jesus should deny<\/a> Peter before his Father in heaven.\u00a0 Luke recorded what Jesus said to Peter in a bit more detail (Luke 22:31-34 NET):<\/p>\n

\u201cSimon,19<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>Simon, pay attention!\u00a0 Satan has demanded to have you all, to sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith (\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) <\/em>may not fail.20<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>When you have turned back (\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03c1\u1f73\u03c8\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, a form of\u00a0\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03c1\u03ad\u03c6\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em>, strengthen21<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>your brothers.\u201d \u00a0But Peter said to him, \u201cLord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death!\u201d \u00a0Jesus replied, \u201cI tell you, Peter, the rooster will not22<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>crow23<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>today until24<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>you have denied (\u1f00\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03bd\u1f75\u03c3\u1fc3<\/a>, a form\u00a0\u1f00\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03bd\u03ad\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>)<\/em> three times that you know25<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>me.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Jesus, believing that He had received<\/a> what He prayed, was confident that Peter\u2019s faith would not fail despite his denial.\u00a0 And with the same foreknowledge that He prophesied Peter\u2019s denial, Jesus prophesied Peter\u2019s \u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03c1\u03ad\u03c6\u03c9, his turning back.\u00a0 He assured Peter a place of service, to strengthen his brothers.\u00a0 I think it likely that the other disciples were Peter\u2019s younger brothers<\/em>.\u00a0 And though I have heard preaching that lamented that Peter didn\u2019t buck up and play the man, I can\u2019t imagine that the preachers actually wanted Peter to make Jesus’ prophetic word untrue.<\/p>\n

As I look at this I wonder, is it special pleading of a special case or a formula that is repeated every time the Lord forgives sin?\u00a0 I lean toward the latter, though I\u2019m hard-pressed to demonstrate why.\u00a0 In any case there is no denying what Peter became after he turned back and received the promised Holy Spirit<\/a>.<\/p>\n
