href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/15\/to-make-holy-part-8\/#_prudent\">suggestion<\/a> that <em>takes away<\/em> may not be the best translation of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/air.html#airei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b1\u1f34\u03c1\u03b5\u03b9<\/a> (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/air.html#airw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b1\u1f34\u03c1\u03c9<\/a>) here.\u00a0 But a quarterback searching downfield for an open receiver knows when he has been tackled from behind.\u00a0 This was more like being blindsided by a gnat, annoying, but insufficient to shake the well established truth that poor job performance is fire.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Nothing clicked until I examined the meaning of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kaq.html#kaqairei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03b8\u03b1\u1f77\u03c1\u03b5\u03b9<\/a> (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kaq.html#kaqairw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03b8\u03b1\u03af\u03c1\u03c9<\/a>), translated <em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/15\/to-make-holy-part-8\/#_prunes\">he prunes<\/a><\/em> in: <em>He prunes every branch that bears fruit so that it will bear more fruit<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/20\/he-takes-away-part-1\/#_ftn3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I chuckled then, and quipped, \u201cThe translators seem to have been a little too enamored with a gardening metaphor and a little too careless with the meaning of the words.\u201d\u00a0 The gnat was buzzing around my face then.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t until later that day, walking and praying, that it dawned on me that I wasn\u2019t merely accusing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/Johnny-come-lately\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Johnny-come-lately<\/a> translators of the NET (my contemporaries) of carelessness, but the translators of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John+15%3A2&amp;version=KJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">KJV<\/a> as well, not to mention anyone else who ever translated <a href=\"https:\/\/biblehub.com\/john\/15-2.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John 15:2<\/a> into English.\u00a0 This gnat was not about to be easily brushed away.\u00a0 It deserved to be entertained or crushed.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the first two occurrences of \u03b1\u1f34\u03c1\u03b5\u03b9 in the New Testament.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"319\">\n<p style=\"text-align: worse.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>The KJV rendered it: <em>else the new piece that filled it up taketh away<\/em> (\u03b1\u1f34\u03c1\u03b5\u03b9) <em>from the old<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/20\/he-takes-away-part-1\/#_ftn8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a> virtually identical to <em>Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away<\/em> (\u03b1\u1f34\u03c1\u03b5\u03b9).<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/20\/he-takes-away-part-1\/#_ftn9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 So can away:<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>In the NET <em>the patch<\/em> was a very clever and concise translation of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/to.html#to\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c4\u1f78<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/plh.html#plhrwma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c0\u03bb\u1f75\u03c1\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1<\/a> relative to the accurate but somewhat awkward <em>the<\/em>..<em>piece that filled<\/em>..<em>up <\/em>in the KJV.\u00a0 The translators assumed here that \u03c4\u1f78 \u03c0\u03bb\u1f75\u03c1\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1 was in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/nouns1.htm#NOMINATIVE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nominative case<\/a> rather than the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/nouns1.htm#ACCUSATIVE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">accusative case<\/a>: <em>the patch pulls away from it<\/em> (NET), <em>the<\/em>..<em>piece that filled it up taketh away<\/em> (KJV) rather than \u201che pulls away the patch from it\u201d or \u201che taketh away the piece that filled it up.\u201d\u00a0 The translators assumed the Greek word <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/aut.html#autou2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>, translated <em>it<\/em>, was an adverb referring back to the <em>old garment <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/im.html#imatiw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f31\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u1f77\u1ff3<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pal.html#palaiw6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03bb\u03b1\u03b9\u1ff7<\/a> in the Setphanus Textus Receptus and Byzantine Majority Text; see <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/20\/he-takes-away-part-1\/#_Table2\">Table2<\/a> below).<\/p>\n<p><em>Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away <\/em>[from me], the KJV translators left me to assume.\u00a0 The NET translators simply made it explicit: <em>He takes away every branch that does not bear fruit in me<\/em>.\u00a0 But what does <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/aut.html#auto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u03bf<\/a> mean here?<\/p>\n<p>Surely, it\u2019s not to be understood in the nominative case.\u00a0 Jesus didn\u2019t refer to <em>the gardener<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/o.html#o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f41<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/gew.html#gewrgos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b3\u03b5\u03c9\u03c1\u03b3\u1f79\u03c2<\/a>) his Father with a neuter pronoun.\u00a0 Surely <em>He <\/em>(KJV: <em>he<\/em>) was derived from the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> person singular verb \u03b1\u1f34\u03c1\u03b5\u03b9, and \u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u03bf then was to be understood in the accusative case referring back to <em>every branch that does not bear fruit in me <\/em>or <em>Every branch in me that beareth not fruit<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>So in the NET it was redundant: <em>He takes <\/em>[it] <em>away every branch that does not bear fruit in me<\/em>.\u00a0 The NET translators didn\u2019t translate \u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u03bf in the second clause either: <em>He prunes<\/em> [\u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u03bf] <em>every branch that bears fruit so that it will bear more fruit<\/em>. \u00a0The KJV translators did, however, translate \u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u03bf in the second clause: <em>and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it <\/em>(\u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u03bf)<em>, that it<\/em> <em>may bring forth more fruit<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/20\/he-takes-away-part-1\/#_ftn10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 So what\u2019s up with the first clause?\u00a0 <em>Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh<\/em> [it] <em>away<\/em>, is not that bad.<\/p>\n<p>I compared this construction to the first occurrence of another form of \u03b1\u1f34\u03c1\u03c9.\u00a0 The devil said to Jesus (Matthew 4:6 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIf you are the Son of God, throw yourself down.\u00a0 For it is written, \u2018He will command his angels concerning you\u2019 and \u2018with their hands they will lift you up <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/aro.html#arousi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f00\u03c1\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03b1\u1f34\u03c1\u03c9)<\/em>, so that you will not strike your foot against a lift<\/em>&#8230;<em>up<\/em> (NET) and <em>they shall bear<\/em>&#8230;<em>up <\/em>(KJV).\u00a0 The 2<sup>nd<\/sup> person accusative pronoun <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/se.html#se\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c3\u03b5<\/a>, translated <em>you <\/em>(NET) or <em>thee <\/em>(KJV), is what they will lift up <em>with <\/em>or <em>in their hands<\/em>.\u00a0 The main reason \u1f00\u03c1\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd was translated <em>will lift <\/em>or <em>shall bear up<\/em> here instead of \u201cwill take away\u201d was because it is itself a translation in the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/30\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-3\/#_Table5\">Septuagint<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lang\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?t=kjv&amp;strongs=h5375\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u05d9\u05e9\u05c1\u05d0\u05d5\u05e0\u05da<\/a> (<em>n\u00e2\u015b\u00e2\u02bc<\/em>) from <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Psalms+91:12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Psalm 91:12<\/a>.\u00a0 But I also noticed that there is no place mentioned anywhere near the verb where <em>you <\/em>might be taken away from, only a reason given why <em>they will lift you up<\/em>, <em>so that<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/mh.html#mhpote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03bc\u1f75\u03c0\u03bf\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>) <em>you will not strike your foot against a stone<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>This caused me to wonder if <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/en.html#en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f10\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/emo.html#emoi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f10\u03bc\u03bf\u1f76<\/a>, translated <em>in me<\/em>, in John 15:2 was really a place to be taken away from, or a description of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pan.html#pan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c0\u1fb6\u03bd<\/a> <a
