target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/cr.html#cristw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03a7\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u1ff7<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/names\/ih.html#ihsou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f38\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>),<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/14\/a-monotonous-cycle-part-2\/#_Table2\">Table<\/a>]\u2026What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit.<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"127\">\n<p align=\"right\">John 3:5, 6 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"511\">2) \u2026the flesh has desires that are opposed (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><em>For the law of the life-giving <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/category\/introduction\/holy-spirit\/\">Spirit<\/a> in Christ Jesus has set <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/20\/psalm-22-part-5\/#_ftn28\">you<\/a> free from the law of sin and death<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/19\/romans-part-29\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 All of this was achieved by God.\u00a0 <em>For God achieved what the law could not do because it was weakened through the flesh. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and concerning sin, he condemned <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/katek.html#katekrine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1f73\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03bd\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/katak.html#katakrinw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>) <em>sin in the flesh<\/em>\u2026<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/19\/romans-part-29\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Only God knows how much sin is <em>condemned<\/em> in my flesh.\u00a0 I have a general sense that while I\u2019m preoccupied (and frustrated) with the opposition of the flesh that keeps me from the perfection I want (and think I should demonstrate by <em>the righteousness of God through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ<\/em>)<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/19\/romans-part-29\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a> less and less of the sin (that is the desire of the flesh) sees the light of day.\u00a0 It is not expressed in the world.\u00a0 It is confined, trapped, <em>condemned<\/em> in dead and dying flesh.<\/p>\n<p><em>I am the resurrection and the life<\/em>, Jesus said.\u00a0 <em>The one who believes in me will live even if he dies, and the one who lives and believes in me will never die<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/19\/romans-part-29\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0This was a difficult saying for Martha to believe, many years before Paul wrote to the Romans.\u00a0 Jesus asked her, <em>Do you believe this?<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/19\/romans-part-29\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Martha\u2019s answer was a model of tactful diplomacy, <em>Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God who comes into the world<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/19\/romans-part-29\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jesus knew Martha\u2019s brother was sick, but deliberately waited two more days until he died.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/19\/romans-part-29\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>Our friend<\/em>, He told his disciples, <em>has fallen asleep.\u00a0 But I am going there to awaken him<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/19\/romans-part-29\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0His disciples were not eager to return to Judea.\u00a0 <em>Rabbi<\/em>, they said, <em>the Jewish leaders were just now trying to stone you to death!<\/em>\u00a0 [Jesus had claimed to be Yahweh, <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/John+8:58\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John 8:58, 59 NET<\/a>]\u00a0 <em>Are you going there again?<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/19\/romans-part-29\/#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/19\/romans-part-29\/#sdfootnote11sym\" name=\"sdfootnote11anc\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 So Jesus told them plainly that he was dead, and said,<em> I am glad for your sake that I was not there, so that you may believe<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/19\/romans-part-29\/#sdfootnote12sym\" name=\"sdfootnote12anc\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jesus had deliberately contrived this situation as an object lesson for his disciples, but then Mary, Martha\u2019s sister, came and <em>fell at<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/19\/romans-part-29\/#sdfootnote13sym\" name=\"sdfootnote13anc\"><sup>13<\/sup><\/a> <em>his feet and said to him, \u201cLord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died:\u201d<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/19\/romans-part-29\/#sdfootnote14sym\" name=\"sdfootnote14anc\"><sup>14<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When Jesus saw her weeping, and the people who had come with her weeping, he was intensely moved in spirit and greatly distressed. \u00a0He asked, \u201cWhere have you laid him?\u201d\u00a0 They replied, \u201cLord, come and see.\u201d \u00a0Jesus wept<em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/19\/romans-part-29\/#sdfootnote15sym\" name=\"sdfootnote15anc\"><sup>15<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It was a profound moment. \u00a0Only He knows how many people He killed as Yahweh, sinners, yes, but people.\u00a0 He planned the death of Martha\u2019s and Mary\u2019s brother.\u00a0 He knew what He intended to do in the next few moments.\u00a0 And yet He wept.\u00a0 To say that Yahweh was not empathetic with human death would be false.\u00a0 I\u2019m particularly affected by the implications of Genesis 18, that before the omniscient, omnipresent Yahweh decided to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah he took physical form and walked its streets. \u00a0But there is something even more affecting about Yahweh, born of the flesh of Adam as Jesus, standing before the tomb of a friend weeping human tears from human eyes.<\/p>\n<p><em>Take away the stone<\/em>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/19\/romans-part-29\/#sdfootnote16sym\" name=\"sdfootnote16anc\"><sup>16<\/sup><\/a> Jesus said.\u00a0 Martha, ever the proper hostess, protested, <em>Lord, by this time the body will have a bad smell, because he has been buried four days<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/19\/romans-part-29\/#sdfootnote17sym\" name=\"sdfootnote17anc\"><sup>17<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>Jesus responded<\/em> (John 11:40-44 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cDidn\u2019t I tell you that if you believe, you would see<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/19\/romans-part-29\/#sdfootnote18sym\" name=\"sdfootnote18anc\"><sup>18<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>the glory of God?\u201d \u00a0So they took away the stone.<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/19\/romans-part-29\/#sdfootnote19sym\" name=\"sdfootnote19anc\"><sup>19<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <\/em>Jesus looked upward and said, \u201cFather, I thank you that you have listened to me. \u00a0I knew that you always listen to me, but I said this for the sake of the crowd standing around here, that they may believe that you sent me.\u201d \u00a0When he had said this, he shouted in a loud voice, \u201cLazarus, come out!\u201d \u00a0The<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/19\/romans-part-29\/#sdfootnote20sym\" name=\"sdfootnote20anc\"><sup>20<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>one who had died came out, his feet and hands tied up with strips of cloth, and a cloth wrapped around his face. \u00a0Jesus said to them, \u201cUnwrap him and let him<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/19\/romans-part-29\/#sdfootnote21sym\" name=\"sdfootnote21anc\"><sup>21<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>go.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/03\/18\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-2\/#_ftn13\">Thanks be<\/a> to God through Jesus Christ our Lord<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/19\/romans-part-29\/#sdfootnote22sym\" name=\"sdfootnote22anc\"><sup>22<\/sup><\/a>\u2026<em>who will rescue me from this body of death<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/19\/romans-part-29\/#sdfootnote23sym\" name=\"sdfootnote23anc\"><sup>23<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The ultimate condemnation of sin in the flesh is the death of the body.\u00a0 <em>The one who believes in me will live even if he dies<\/em>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/19\/romans-part-29\/#sdfootnote24sym\" name=\"sdfootnote24anc\"><sup>24<\/sup><\/a> Jesus promised everyone born of the flesh and of the Spirit.\u00a0 To those who already consider themselves <em>dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/15\/romans-part-25\/#sdfootnote10sym\">Jesus<\/a><\/em>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/19\/romans-part-29\/#sdfootnote25sym\" name=\"sdfootnote25anc\"><sup>25<\/sup><\/a> who accept their new identities, <em>with the mind<\/em> [they themselves] <em>serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin<\/em>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/19\/romans-part-29\/#sdfootnote26sym\" name=\"sdfootnote26anc\"><sup>26<\/sup><\/a> Jesus promised, <em>the one who lives and believes in me will never die<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/19\/romans-part-29\/#sdfootnote27sym\" name=\"sdfootnote27anc\"><sup>27<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 To them the well-deserved demise of the <em>body of death<\/em> is a welcome relief, not a cause of apprehension.<\/p>\n<p><em>Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood,<\/em> [Jesus] <em>likewise shared in their humanity, so that through death he could destroy the one who holds the power of death (that is, the devil), and set free those who were held in slavery all their lives by their fear of death<\/em>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/19\/romans-part-29\/#sdfootnote28sym\" name=\"sdfootnote28anc\"><sup>28<\/sup><\/a> is the way the writer of Hebrews put it.\u00a0 Paul concluded, <em>so that the righteous requirement of the law may be fulfilled <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/plh.html#plhrwqh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03c9\u03b8\u1fc7<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/plh.html#plhrow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>) <em>in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/19\/romans-part-29\/#sdfootnote29sym\" name=\"sdfootnote29anc\"><sup>29<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The <em>righteous requirement of the law<\/em> is fulfilled by <em>the righteousness of God <\/em>[<em>apart from the law<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/19\/romans-part-29\/#sdfootnote30sym\" name=\"sdfootnote30anc\"><sup>30<\/sup><\/a>]<em> through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ for <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/11\/12\/atonement-part-11\/#_ftn43\">all<\/a> who believe<\/em>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/19\/romans-part-29\/#sdfootnote31sym\" name=\"sdfootnote31anc\"><sup>31<\/sup><\/a> the love that <em>is the fulfillment<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/plh.html#plhrwma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bb\u03ae\u03c1\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>) <em>of the law<\/em>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/19\/romans-part-29\/#sdfootnote32sym\" name=\"sdfootnote32anc\"><sup>32<\/sup><\/a> the fruit of the Spirit<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/19\/romans-part-29\/#sdfootnote33sym\" name=\"sdfootnote33anc\"><sup>33<\/sup><\/a> of God, in other words, to <em>walk according<\/em>\u2026<em>to the Spirit<\/em>.\u00a0 As Jesus said, <em>Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets.\u00a0 I have not come to abolish
