<\/a>I was curious if I could determine whether remain <\/em>in the NET translation of \u05ea\u05bc\u05b4\u05e8\u05b0\u05d7\u05b7\u05a3\u05e7<\/a> (rachaq<\/em>) owed anything to the theory that God the Father had forsaken God the Son in some more secretive way<\/a> than to the cross.\u00a0 Where Be not far from me<\/em> sounds like a plea to stay close, Do not remain far away<\/em> sounds to me like a plea to return from a distance.\u00a0 But of the seven occurrences of the exact form \u05ea\u05e8\u05d7\u05e7 (rachaq<\/em>) five where translated do<\/em>…remain far away<\/em>.\u00a0 The only occurrence that was not negated was translated Keep your distance<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Until Jesus\u2019 crucifixion the typical expectation for the end (\u03c4\u03ad\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) of my one dear Son; in him I take great delight<\/em>[1]<\/sup><\/a> was not that He would be executed as a criminal.\u00a0 I\u2019m taking my concept of \u201ctypical expectation\u201d from Jesus\u2019 use of \u03b4\u03bf\u03ba\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c4\u03b5<\/a> (a form of \u03b4\u03bf\u03ba\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>; NET: you think<\/em>) in answer to those who informed Him about the manner of death of some Galileans (Luke 13:1-5 NET):<\/p>\n

After Jesus\u2019 death, more to the point after his resurrection, his death became the foundational assumption of new (Romans 7:1-6<\/a>) eternal life<\/a> in the Spirit (Galatians 2:20, 21 NET):<\/p>\n

I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. \u00a0So the life I now live in the body, I live because of the faithfulness<\/a> of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. \u00a0I do not set aside God\u2019s grace, because if righteousness could come through the law, then Christ died for nothing!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Job is the primary example of suffering for righteousness\u2019 sake (1 Peter 3:13-17<\/a>) in the Old Testament.\u00a0 If I accept Psalm 22 as Christ\u2019s meditation enduring the cross, it is interesting to contrast Job\u2019s attitude toward God with that of the Son of God toward his Father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

I plan to look at all the differences between the Masoretic text and the Septuagint here.\u00a0 What caught my attention first, however, was how this prophecy fared so well at the hands of the Masoretes, whose \u201cultimate goal was to uphold the traditions of the Jewish people. \u00a0The Masoretes had to decipher the authentic word of God and eliminate the dissimilarities.\u201d[12]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

So I clicked the \u201cShow\u201d button on Rashi\u2019s Commentary<\/a> on The Complete Jewish Bible<\/a> online at Chabad.org<\/a>.\u00a0 The answer became apparent:<\/p>\n

Rashi\u2019s Commentary to verse 3 – Despised and rejected by men:<\/strong> was he.\u00a0 So is the custom of this prophet: he mentions all Israel as one man, e.g., (44:2), \u201cFear not, My servant Jacob\u201d ; (44:1) \u201cAnd now, hearken, Jacob, My servant.\u201d Here too (52:13), \u201cBehold My servant shall prosper,\u201d he said concerning the house of Jacob.\u00a0 \u05d9\u05b7\u05e9\u05c2\u05b0\u05db\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05dc is an expression of prosperity.\u00a0 Comp. (I Sam. 18:14) \u201cAnd David was successful (\u05de\u05b7\u05e9\u05c2\u05b0\u05db\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05dc) in all his ways.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Rashi\u2019s Commentary to verse 4 – Indeed, he bore our illnesses:<\/strong> Heb. \u05d0\u05b8\u05db\u05b5\u05df, an expression of \u2018but\u2019 in all places.\u00a0 But now we see that this came to him not because of his low state, but that he was chastised with pains so that all the nations be atoned for with Israel\u2019s suffering.\u00a0 The illness that should rightfully have come upon us, he bore.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The massacre of Jews during the People\u2019s Crusade of 1096 deeply affected Rashi (RA<\/strong>bbi SH<\/strong>lomo Y<\/strong>itzhaki).\u00a0 He \u201cwrote several Selichot (penitential poems) mourning the slaughter and the destruction of the region’s great yeshivot.\u201d[13]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 \u201cThe Hebrew chronicles portray the Rhineland Jews [whether massacred by crusaders in 1096 directly or compelled to suicide] as martyrs who willingly sacrificed themselves in order to honour God and to preserve their own honour.\u201d[14]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

I cross-referenced the occurrences<\/a> of \u05d7\u05b8\u05dc\u05b8\u05d4<\/a> (ch\u00e2l\u00e2h<\/em>) in the Masoretic text with the occurrences<\/a> of \u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03b3\u1fc6\u03c2<\/a> (a form of \u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03b3\u03ae<\/a>)] in the Septuagint, searching for some correlation.\u00a0 In the account of Ahab\u2019s death (1 Kings 22:34-39<\/a>) after being struck by an arrow the king said, I\u2019m wounded <\/em>(\u05d4\u05d7\u05dc\u05d9\u05ea\u05d9, another form of ch\u00e2l\u00e2h<\/em>).[15]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0King Ahab of the northern kingdom of Israel bled to death from that wound <\/em>(makkah<\/em>, \u05d4\u05de\u05db\u05d4<\/a>), translated \u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03b3\u1fc6\u03c2 in the Septuagint.\u00a0 It was enough to persuade me that the rabbis interpreted \u05d4\u05d7\u05dc\u05d9 (another form of ch\u00e2l\u00e2h<\/em>) as a noun in Isaiah 53:10a.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m uncertain[16]<\/sup><\/a> if the translators of the Septuagint understood this as a reference to \u201call Israel\u201d or as a reference to the Messiah<\/a> whose appearance was prophesied.\u00a0 The Masoretes, understanding him <\/em>as \u201call Israel\u201d and believing \u201che was chastised with pains so that all the nations be atoned for with Israel\u2019s suffering,\u201d may have preserved the original Hebrew here better than the Rabbis who translated the Septuagint.<\/p>\n

None of this, however, justifies Christian crusaders[17]<\/sup><\/a> (or anyone else for that matter) extorting, robbing or killing Jews (From Rhineland massacres<\/a>, Background):<\/p>\n

A relevant perspective on the extent of the era’s antisemitism was recorded 40 years afterward by Jewish historian Solomon bar Simson<\/a>. He stated that Godfrey of Bouillon<\/a> swore<\/em><\/p>\n
