I intend to become much more familiar with the Greek translation<\/a> of \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b8\u05a8\u05d4<\/a> (ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>) and \u05d9\u05b1\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b4\u05d4\u0599<\/a> (ye<\/sup>h\u00f4vih<\/em>) in the Septuagint.\u00a0 To do that I decided to start at the beginning, noting all divine references.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Thus far I have the plural \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u0591\u05d9\u05dd<\/a> (‘elohiym<\/em>, translated \u0398\u03b5\u1f78\u03c2<\/a>, God<\/em>) and \u05d5\u05b0\u05e8\u05a3\u05d5\u05bc\u05d7\u05b7<\/a> (ruwach<\/em>, translated \u03c0\u03bd\u03b5\u1fe6\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>, spirit<\/em>, wind<\/em>) \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u0594\u05d9\u05dd (‘elohiym<\/em>, translated \u0398\u03b5\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>, of God<\/em>, divine<\/em>). \u00a0<\/a>I was raised on an abbreviated version of Lord Acton\u2019s<\/a> maxim<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men, even when they exercise influence and not authority, still more when you superadd the tendency or the certainty of corruption by authority.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It\u2019s difficult to say now if I would\u2019ve learned more from this fuller treatment or rebelled more against it.\u00a0 Still, I find myself searching almost instinctively for a limit on the power and authority of \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u0594\u05d9\u05dd (‘elohiym<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The Hebrew word translated good <\/em>was \u05d8\u0591\u05d5\u05b9\u05d1<\/a> (towb<\/em>).\u00a0 It was translated \u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u1f79\u03bd<\/a> (a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>) in the Septuagint.\u00a0 This beautiful good<\/a> could be the limit I seek on the power and authority of \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u0594\u05d9\u05dd (‘elohiym<\/em>).\u00a0 Granted, its meaning is his own.\u00a0 But I\u2019ll take what I can get in the face of such fearful power and authority.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Years ago, studying this opening chapter, I realized it wasn\u2019t instructional in the sense that I could read it and then go out and create the heaven and the earth<\/em>.\u00a0 Encouraged by Paul\u2019s instruction to Timothy\u2014Every scripture is inspired by God and useful for teaching, for reproof<\/a>, for correction, and for training in righteousness<\/em> [Table<\/a>], that the person dedicated to God may be capable and equipped for every good<\/em> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03b8\u1f78\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03b8\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>) work<\/em>[1]<\/sup><\/a>\u2014I was casting about for some useful instruction here.\u00a0 It dawned on me finally that this chapter describes the word of God (before sin entered the world through one man and death through sin<\/em>[2]<\/sup><\/a>).<\/p>\n

<\/a>And G-d said: ‘Let there be light’ And there was light<\/em>.[3]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 God\u2019s word is powerful: He spoke and it happened as He said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

A woman<\/a>, her reason clearly tormented by personal loss and grief, wrote an obituary blaming the chief law enforcement officers of her state and nation for not enforcing current medical opinion as stringently as she deemed appropriate.\u00a0 She also judged, and hoped for the condemnation of, any who had not complied with that opinion. Did those who voted for these men truly expect them to use the power of their offices to enforce medical opinion as law?<\/p>\n

I didn’t stumble across the obituary this woman wrote for her husband on my own.\u00a0 It was presented to me as pamphleteering for the U.S. election in November.<\/p>\n
