The bulls of Bashan<\/em> have been decoded as religious leaders<\/a>, demons<\/a> or a combination of people and spirit entities<\/a>.\u00a0 What caught my attention was that strong bulls <\/em>(‘abbiyr<\/em>, \u05d0\u05b7\u05d1\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8\u05b5\u0596\u05d9<\/a>; NET: powerful bulls<\/em>) of Bashan<\/em> was fat bulls<\/em> in the Septuagint.\u00a0 It reminded me of the Song of Moses<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Though my assumption in these essays is that Jesus preferred the Hebrew version of Psalm 22, I still use the Greek version of the Septuagint to confirm or question the originality of the Masoretic text.\u00a0 In other words, what Hebrew did Jesus prefer?\u00a0 The table<\/a> below of all the other occurrences of \u05d1\u05b8\u05e9\u05c1\u05b8\u05a3\u05df<\/a> causes me to question the originality of Bashan <\/em>(\u05d1\u05b8\u05e9\u05c1\u05b8\u05a3\u05df) in Psalm 22:12.\u00a0 A subset of those occurrences with identical consonants follows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Only four occurrences were translated as place names in the Septuagint.\u00a0 The translation \u03c4\u03b1\u1f7b\u03c1\u03c9\u03bd<\/a> (a form of \u03c4\u03b1\u1fe6\u03c1\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) in Deuteronomy 32:14 makes me very suspicious of the originality of \u05d1\u05b8\u05e9\u05c1\u05b8\u05df\u0599 (Bashan<\/em>) there.\u00a0 But the translations \u03c0\u1fd6\u03bf\u03bd<\/a> (a form of \u03c0\u03af\u03c9\u03bd<\/a>) and \u1f10\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03b1\u03c4\u03c9\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9<\/a> (a form of \u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03b1\u03c4\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>) give me pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Did the rabbis translate \u05d1\u05b8\u05e9\u05c1\u05b8\u0596\u05df<\/a> (Bashan<\/em>) and \u05de\u05b0\u05e8\u05b4\u05d9\u05d0\u05b5\u05a5\u05d9<\/a> (meriy’<\/em>, Tanakh: fatlings<\/em>, NET: fattened animals<\/em>) \u1f10\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03b1\u03c4\u03c9\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9<\/a> (a form of \u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03b1\u03c4\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>)? \u00a0Or was \u05d1\u05b8\u05e9\u05c1\u05b8\u0596\u05df (Bashan<\/em>) not part of the original Hebrew they had at their disposal when they translated.\u00a0 In other words, \u05d1\u05b8\u05e9\u05c1\u05b8\u0596\u05df (Bashan<\/em>) may have been added by the Masoretes in both verses, Psalm 22:12 and Ezekiel 39:18.\u00a0 On the other hand if the rabbis translated both Hebrew words \u1f10\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03b1\u03c4\u03c9\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9 in Ezekiel 39:18 I could entertain the possibility that they translated \u05d1\u05b8\u05e9\u05c1\u05b8\u0596\u05df (Bashan<\/em>) \u03c0\u1f77\u03bf\u03bd\u03b5\u03c2<\/a> (a form of \u03c0\u03af\u03c9\u03bd<\/a>) in Psalm 22:12.<\/p>\n

While adding \u05d1\u05b8\u05e9\u05c1\u05b8\u0596\u05df (Bashan<\/em>) to Psalm 22:12 makes some sense to me\u2014to deflect comparison with the prophecy of Deuteronomy 32:12-15\u2014it seems to implicate \u05d0\u05b7\u05d1\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8\u05b5\u0596\u05d9<\/a> (‘abbiyr<\/em>; Tanakh: strong bulls<\/em>; NET: powerful bulls<\/em>) as well.\u00a0 I made a table<\/a> of all the other occurrences of \u05d0\u05b7\u05d1\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8\u05b5\u0596\u05d9 (‘abbiyr<\/em>).\u00a0 The first thing I noticed is that strong bulls <\/em>(Tanakh, KJV) and powerful bulls <\/em>(NET) was a choice made by the English translators of Psalm 22:12 and was not repeated elsewhere.\u00a0 An example follows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Clearly, \u05d0\u05b7\u05d1\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8\u05b5\u0596\u05d9 (‘abbiyr<\/em>) is fairly flexible and was translated according to context.\u00a0 So I went the other way and searched \u03c0\u1f77\u03bf\u03bd\u03b5\u03c2<\/a> (a form of \u03c0\u03af\u03c9\u03bd<\/a>) in the Septuagint.\u00a0 It occurred one other time in the same psalm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Here I assume that \u05d3\u05b8\u05e9\u05c1\u05b5\u0596\u05df (dashen<\/em>) was translated \u03bb\u03b9\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u1f79\u03c2<\/a>, even though that reverses the word order of the Masoretic text.\u00a0 The Greek word \u03c0\u1f77\u03bf\u03bd\u03b1<\/a> (another form of \u03c0\u03af\u03c9\u03bd<\/a>) doesn\u2019t appear to have any counterpart in the Hebrew of the Masoretic text.\u00a0 Its English translation fertile <\/em>is the meaning of \u05d1\u05e9\u05df (Bashan<\/em>).<\/p>\n

So if the Masoretes changed \u05d3\u05e9\u05df (dashen<\/em>) to \u05d1\u05e9\u05df (Bashan<\/em>) in Psalm 22:12 it was so clever and subtle a change as to be almost unnecessary, except to hide the connection between the fat bulls<\/em> that surrounded Jesus as He was crucified and the fat ones of the earth<\/em> who have eaten and worshipped<\/em> in that portion of the psalm which described the joy set out for him<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

The translators of the NET offered sufficient notes to reveal their understanding of Psalm 22:29.\u00a0 They recognized that all <\/em>meant all:[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Together the two form a merism encompassing all human beings\u2014the healthy, the dying, and everyone in between.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

They acknowledged that the text says that all <\/em>will worship the Lord:[3]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

The psalmist envisions all people, whether healthy or dying, joining in worship of the Lord.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But they did not join in with<\/a> those who heard it in faith<\/em>:[4]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Here the psalmist uses the forms rhetorically as he envisions a time when the Lord will receive universal worship. The mood is one of wishful thinking and anticipation; this is not prophecy in the strict sense.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I can accept no longer that Jesus, as He died on the cross meditating on this psalm, thought it was \u201cwishful thinking.\u201d\u00a0 I believe the One who frightened<\/a> his disciples, saying\u2014How then would the scriptures that say it must happen this way be fulfilled?<\/em>[5]<\/sup><\/a>\u2014received this psalm as the word of God, a promise made explicitly to Him (Hebrews 12:2b NET Table<\/a>).<\/p>\n
