Yehovah <\/em>(\u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b8\u0596\u05d4) was explicit about the purpose of the sabbaths He made for people<\/a>: that you may know that I am the Lord<\/em> (Yehovah<\/em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4<\/a>) who sanctifies you<\/em>.[1]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Paul wrote to believers in Colossae<\/a> (Colossians 2:6-17 NET):<\/p>\n

The Greek word translated reality<\/em> above was \u03c3\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b1<\/a> (KJV: body<\/em>): Christ is the body<\/em> which cast the shadow<\/em>.<\/p>\n

I rely now on the Holy Spirit and his continuous infusion of God\u2019s own love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control to quash any impulse to rush out and indulge my favorite sin after reading: He has destroyed what was against us, a certificate of indebtedness expressed in decrees opposed to us.\u00a0 He has taken it away by nailing it to the cross<\/em>.[8]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

It is extremely interesting to me that where the NET described a believer\u2019s circumcision as the removal of the fleshly body<\/em> because the NA28<\/sup><\/a> proposed \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> \u03c3\u1f7d\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> \u03c4\u1fc6\u03c2<\/a> \u03c3\u03b1\u03c1\u03ba\u1f79\u03c2<\/a> as the more original text, the KJV described it as putting off the body of the sins of the flesh<\/em> because the Stephanus Textus Receptus<\/a> had \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5 \u03c3\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2 \u03c4\u03c9\u03bd<\/a> \u03b1\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03b9\u03c9\u03bd<\/a> \u03c4\u03b7\u03c2 \u03c3\u03b1\u03c1\u03ba\u03bf\u03c2.\u00a0 Even if \u03c4\u03c9\u03bd \u03b1\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03b9\u03c9\u03bd was added by a scribe, I doubt that Paul would take offense at this amplification.<\/p>\n

He wrote to believers in Rome (Romans 6:1-4 NET):<\/p>\n

What shall we say then?\u00a0 Are we to remain[9]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> in sin so that grace may increase? \u00a0Absolutely not!\u00a0 How can we who died to sin still live in it? \u00a0Or do you not know that as many as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? \u00a0Therefore we have been buried with him through baptism into death, in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too may live a new life.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The NET translators chose live <\/em>above for two different Greek words.\u00a0 In\u2014so we too may live a new life<\/em>[10]<\/sup><\/a>\u2014live <\/em>was \u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03c0\u03b1\u03c4\u1f75\u03c3\u03c9\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a> (a form of \u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03c0\u03b1\u03c4\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) in Greek.\u00a0 And in\u2014How can we who died to sin still live in it?<\/em>[11]<\/sup><\/a>\u2014it was \u03b6\u1f75\u03c3\u03bf\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a> (a form of \u03b6\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>).\u00a0 I don\u2019t have any particular quarrel with translating \u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03c0\u03b1\u03c4\u1f75\u03c3\u03c9\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd live<\/em>.\u00a0 But perhaps \u03b6\u1f75\u03c3\u03bf\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd in such close proximity could have been translated something like fester <\/em>to capture the tone better: How can we who died to sin still <\/em>fester in it?<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/a>What appears to be hung out there as a rhetorical question or lament in Paul\u2019s letter to the Romans was actually answered quite succinctly in his letter to the Galatians: One will continue to fester in sin if one does not live <\/em>(\u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03c0\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, another form of \u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03c0\u03b1\u03c4\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) by the Spirit<\/em>: But I say, live by the Spirit and you will not carry out the desires of the flesh<\/em>.[12]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

<\/a>The English translation\u2014you will not carry out<\/em>\u2014is weaker here than the Greek: \u03bf\u1f50 \u03bc\u1f74 \u03c4\u03b5\u03bb\u1f73\u03c3\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5.\u00a0 The second person plural verb \u03c4\u03b5\u03bb\u1f73\u03c3\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5<\/a> is an aorist<\/a> subjunctive<\/a> form of \u03c4\u03b5\u03bb\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>.\u00a0 So \u03bf\u1f50 \u03bc\u1f74 makes this clause a \u201cSubjunctive of Emphatic Negation<\/a>\u2026the absolute and unequivocal denial of the probability of an event EVER OCCURING at any moment or time in the future.\u201d[13]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 So if I ever bring the sinful desires of the flesh to maturity or carry <\/em>them out<\/em>, I am not at that moment living by the Spirit.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not a time to debate a point<\/a> but to recalibrate my senses to become more accustomed and attuned to the Spirit of God (Romans 7:18-20 NET).<\/p>\n

For I know that nothing good lives (\u03bf\u1f30\u03ba\u03b5\u1fd6<\/a>, a form of \u03bf\u1f30\u03ba\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> in me, that is, in my flesh.\u00a0 For I want to do the good, but I cannot[14]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> do it. \u00a0For I do not do the good I want, but[15]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> I do the very evil I do not want! \u00a0Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer me doing it but[16]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> sin that lives (\u03bf\u1f30\u03ba\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c3\u03b1<\/a>, another form of \u03bf\u1f30\u03ba\u03ad\u03c9)<\/em> in me.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Paul\u2019s command\u2014\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03bd\u1f73\u03c4\u03c9<\/a>, translated do<\/em>\u2026let<\/em>\u2026judge<\/em>, is an imperative<\/a> form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>\u2014do not let anyone judge you with respect to food or drink, or in the matter of a feast, new moon, or Sabbath days<\/em>[17]<\/sup><\/a> makes no sense to me on its surface.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how to stop religious people from making religious judgments about religious things.\u00a0 But if I understand \u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03bd\u1f73\u03c4\u03c9 here as rule<\/a><\/em>, things begin to fall into place.<\/p>\n

I have sinned.\u00a0 I have lived, walked, been led by the sin that lives in me<\/em> rather than the Holy Spirit.\u00a0 That very moment when I need most of all to get back to living, walking, being led by Christ\u2019s Spirit is the very moment religious people descend with their judgments.\u00a0 Should they refrain my own religious mind jabbers away at me with similar judgments. \u00a0If I turn then to live, walk or be led by the judgments of religious people or my own religious mind, I have still not returned to live, walk, be led by the Spirit of God.\u00a0 I have refused to enter his rest<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The regulations in the law regarding food or drink, or in the matter of a feast, new moon, or Sabbath days\u2026are only the shadow of the things to come, but the reality is Christ!<\/em>[18]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0A believer must be certain of this.\u00a0 The sabbath laws continued:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

A believer bullied by the fear of death into living by these sabbath regulations rather than the Holy Spirit not only exchanges the reality of Christ for a shadow but frustrates the purpose of the sabbath as revealed in the law: that ye may know that I am the Lord that sanctifies<\/em> (\u1f01\u03b3\u03b9\u1f71\u03b6\u03c9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f01\u03b3\u03b9\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>) you<\/em>.[19]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0For indeed he who makes holy<\/em> (\u1f01\u03b3\u03b9\u1f71\u03b6\u03c9\u03bd, a form of \u1f01\u03b3\u03b9\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9) and those being made holy<\/em> (\u1f01\u03b3\u03b9\u03b1\u03b6\u1f79\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u1f01\u03b3\u03b9\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9) all have the same origin<\/em> (\u1f10\u03be<\/a> \u1f11\u03bd\u1f78\u03c2<\/a> \u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2<\/a>; KJV: are\u00a0all of one<\/em>), and so he is not ashamed to call them brothers<\/em>…[20]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n
