The rabbis\u2019 choice of the Greek word \u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u1f74<\/a> in the Septuagint supports the originality of some form of \u05e0\u05b7\u05e4\u05b0\u05e9\u05c1\u0594\u05d5\u05b9 (nephesh<\/em>) here. \u00a0But \u1f51\u03bc\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a> (a form of \u1f51\u03bc\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c2<\/a>) translates as your soul<\/em> rather than his soul<\/em> or his life<\/em>.\u00a0 And in English translation \u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u1f74 \u1f51\u03bc\u1ff6\u03bd (your soul<\/em>) is the subject of the next clause rather than the direct object of the previous one.\u00a0 If the rabbis had understood \u05e0\u05b7\u05e4\u05b0\u05e9\u05c1\u0594\u05d5\u05b9 (nephesh<\/em>) as a direct object one would have expected \u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u03ae\u03bd<\/a> in the accusative case<\/a> in Greek.<\/p>\n

I only brought up the English translation of the Septuagint because the very next word \u1f44\u03c8\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a> is a 3rd<\/sup> person singular form of \u1f41\u03c1\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>, and not the 2nd<\/sup> person plural form \u1f44\u03c8\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a> one would expect. \u00a0In other words \u1f44\u03c8\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9 is in complete agreement with the English translations\u2014he shall see<\/em> (Tanakh, KJV), he will see<\/em> (NET)\u2014of the very next word in the Masoretic text \u05d9\u05b4\u05e8\u05b0\u05d0\u05b6\u05a5\u05d4<\/a> (ra’ah<\/em>). \u00a0The English translations of the Septuagint do not reveal this disagreement between subject\u2014your soul<\/em>\u2014and predicate\u2014[he, she, it] shall see<\/em>.<\/p>\n

I made a table<\/a> below of those occurrences of \u05e0\u05b6\u05e4\u05b6\u05e9\u05c1 (nephesh<\/em>) in Genesis through Deuteronomy plus Isaiah which were translated from the Masoretic text with a personal pronoun into English.\u00a0 My method was haphazard enough at times that I hesitate to claim that this list is exhaustive even in the limited scope mentioned above.\u00a0 It is representative.\u00a0 <\/a>A subset of that table follows, including only those occurrences translated with the 3rd<\/sup> person singular pronoun in the Tanakh or NET (found often only in the notes of the NET).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Here it seems all too obvious that the rabbis who translated the Septuagint changed the pronoun to \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> (a masculine\/neuter form of \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>) because \u1f85\u03b4\u03b7\u03c2<\/a> (NETS: Hades<\/em>; English Elpenor: hell<\/em>) is masculine in Greek.\u00a0 I think the English translation its <\/em>(though a legitimate rendering of \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6) stems from a more modern sensibility which denies hell, death or Hades a masculine or feminine soul\/life.\u00a0 That English translation may or may not reflect what the rabbis had in mind, not to mention the Holy Spirit<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The main issue in Isaiah 53:10, however, is not the gender of the 3rd<\/sup> person pronoun employed to translate \u05e0\u05e4\u05e9\u05d5 (nephesh<\/em>).\u00a0 Rather, in the Septuagint \u05e0\u05e4\u05e9\u05d5 (nephesh<\/em>) was translated with a 2nd<\/sup> person plural pronoun.\u00a0 So I made another table<\/a> below that listed the 2nd<\/sup> person occurrences from my original limited set.\u00a0 Again, it is probably representative rather than exhaustive.\u00a0 To my eye \u05e0\u05e4\u05e9\u05da seemed most similar to \u05e0\u05e4\u05e9\u05d5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Frankly, I would be more convinced, perhaps completely persuaded, if \u1f44\u03c8\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a>, the 2nd<\/sup> person plural form of \u1f41\u03c1\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>, had followed<\/a> \u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u1f74 \u1f51\u03bc\u1ff6\u03bd in Isaiah 53:10 rather than \u1f44\u03c8\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, the 3rd<\/sup> person singular form.\u00a0 I don\u2019t read this as a mistake.\u00a0 The rabbis who translated the Septuagint knew Koine Greek better than I do.\u00a0 I read this as their scruple not to alter the original text any more than they felt was absolutely necessary, even at the expense of good Koine Greek.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll conclude this essay with Jesus\u2019 understanding (Matthew 20:25-28 NET):<\/p>\n
