The strong or fat bulls became like a roaring lion.\u00a0 I used the Greek of the Septuagint to cross reference with the New Testament.\u00a0 The Greek word translated They have opened<\/em> was \u1f24\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03be\u03b1\u03bd<\/a> (a form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03bf\u03af\u03b3\u03c9<\/a>).\u00a0 They opened their mouths \u201cto disclose, bring into the open, reveal\u201d their hatred for God, the same hatred that lives<\/a> in all sinful flesh<\/a> (Revelation 13:6 NET):<\/p>\n

So the beast opened (\u1f24\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03be\u03b5\u03bd, a form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03bf\u03af\u03b3\u03c9)<\/em> his mouth to blaspheme[1]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> against God\u2014to blaspheme both his name and his dwelling place (\u03c3\u03ba\u03b7\u03bd\u1f74\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c3\u03ba\u03b7\u03bd\u03ae<\/a>)<\/em>, that is,[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> those who dwell (\u03c3\u03ba\u03b7\u03bd\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u03c3\u03ba\u03b7\u03bd\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>in heaven.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Greek word translated roaring <\/em>was \u1f60\u03c1\u03c5\u1f79\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> (a form of \u1f60\u03c1\u03cd\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>).\u00a0 Peter wrote (1 Peter 5:8 NET):<\/p>\n

Be sober and alert.\u00a0 Your enemy the devil, like a roaring (\u1f60\u03c1\u03c5\u1f79\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2, a form of \u1f60\u03c1\u03cd\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9)<\/em> lion, is on the prowl looking for someone to devour.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The tongue is a small part of the body<\/em>, James wrote, yet it has great pretensions<\/em>.[3]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Think how small<\/em>[4]<\/sup><\/a> a flame sets a huge forest ablaze. \u00a0And the tongue is a fire!\u00a0 The tongue represents the world of wrongdoing<\/em>[5]<\/sup><\/a> among the parts of our bodies.\u00a0 It pollutes the entire body and sets fire to the course of human existence\u2014and is set on fire by hell<\/em>.[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

The things that come out of the mouth come from the heart<\/em>, Jesus told his disciples, and these things defile a person. \u00a0For out of the heart come evil ideas, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. \u00a0These are the things that defile a person<\/em>\u2026[7]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Paul listed \u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u03bf\u1f77<\/a> (a form of \u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>; NET: outbursts of anger<\/em>) among the works of the flesh (\u03c4\u1f70<\/a> \u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03b1<\/a> \u03c4\u1fc6\u03c2<\/a> \u03c3\u03b1\u03c1\u03ba\u1f79\u03c2<\/a>): Now the works of the flesh are obvious<\/a>: sexual immorality, impurity, depravity, idolatry<\/a>, sorcery, hostilities, strife<\/a>, jealousy<\/a>, outbursts of anger, selfish rivalries, dissensions, factions, envying, murder, drunkenness, carousing, and similar things. \u00a0I am warning you<\/a>, as I had warned you before: Those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God!<\/em>[8]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

The Greek word translated ravening <\/em>was \u1f01\u03c1\u03c0\u1f71\u03b6\u03c9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f01\u03c1\u03c0\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>.\u00a0 This particular form of \u1f01\u03c1\u03c0\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9 doesn\u2019t occur<\/a> in the New Testament.\u00a0 As I scanned the other forms, standing as a spectator among the strong\/fat bulls<\/em> blaspheming as a ravening and roaring lion<\/em>, looking up to Jesus as He endured the cross and this cacophony of sin while making music<\/em><\/a> in his heart with Psalm 22, I heard his word with the same faithfulness<\/a> that sustained Him (John 10:11-13 NET).<\/p>\n

I am the good shepherd.\u00a0 The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. \u00a0The[9]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> hired hand, who is not a shepherd and does[10]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> not own sheep, sees the wolf coming and abandons the sheep and runs away.\u00a0 So the wolf attacks (\u1f01\u03c1\u03c0\u1f71\u03b6\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u1f01\u03c1\u03c0\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9)<\/em> the sheep and scatters them.[11]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> \u00a0Because[12]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> he is a hired hand and is not concerned about the sheep, he runs away.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Greek word translated good <\/em>was \u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u1f79\u03c2<\/a>: \u201cbeautiful (in appearance), fair; good and pleasing in appearance, beautiful; good, useful; conducive to pleasure and enjoyment; advantageous, beneficial, desirable; free from defects, fine, precious; morally good, honest, noble, praiseworthy, contributing to salvation; blameless, excellent, unobjectionable; free from defects, fine, precious; pleasant, desirable, advantageous.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019ve considered this beautiful good elsewhere<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Greek words translated his life<\/em> were the very familiar<\/a> \u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u1f74\u03bd<\/a> \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>.\u00a0 After the earlier study<\/a> in Isaiah I am fully primed<\/a> to hear Jesus\u2019 soul\/life as functionally equivalent to \u03b6\u03c9\u1f74\u03bd \u03b1\u1f30\u1f7d\u03bd\u03b9\u03bf\u03bd (eternal life<\/em><\/a>).<\/p>\n

The Greek word translated lays down<\/em> (KJV: giveth<\/em>) was \u03c4\u1f77\u03b8\u03b7\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, an active voice<\/a>, indicative mood<\/a>, 3rd<\/sup> person singular form of \u03c4\u03af\u03b8\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>\u00a0in the present tense.\u00a0 Here I\u2019ll spend some time meditating on some of the ways Jesus\u2019 lays down his soul\/life for (\u1f51\u03c0\u1f72\u03c1<\/a>) the sheep<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The first definition of \u03c4\u03af\u03b8\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9 in the Koine Greek Lexicon<\/a> online is: \u201cto put, place, lay, lay aside.\u201d\u00a0 Paul wrote believers in Philippi<\/a> (Philippians 2:5-8 NET):<\/p>\n

You should have the same attitude<\/a> toward one another that Christ Jesus had [Table<\/a>]<\/em>, who, though he existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be grasped, but<\/a> emptied himself by taking on the form of a slave, by looking like other men, and by sharing in human nature [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0He humbled himself by becoming obedient (\u1f51\u03c0\u1f75\u03ba\u03bf\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> to the point of death\u2014even death on a cross!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Greek word translated emptied <\/em>was \u1f10\u03ba\u1f73\u03bd\u03c9\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a> (a form of \u03ba\u03b5\u03bd\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>).\u00a0 I began to understand his \u201claying aside\u201d of this soul\/life of God when I began to believe that \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4<\/a> (Yehovah<\/em>) became a human being (John 1:1-5<\/a>, 14<\/a>).<\/p>\n

The next definition is: \u201cto cause to be, render.\u201d\u00a0 Paul wrote believers in Ephesus<\/a> (Ephesians 2:1-7 NET):<\/p>\n

And although you were dead in your<\/a> offenses and sins [Table<\/a>]<\/em>, in which you formerly lived according to this world\u2019s present path, according to the ruler of the domain of the air, the ruler of the spirit that is now energizing the sons of disobedience, among whom all of us also formerly lived out our lives in the cravings of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and the mind, and were[13]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> by nature children of wrath even as the rest\u2026<\/p>\n

But God, being rich in mercy because of his great love with which he loved us, even though we were dead in offenses, made us alive together with Christ\u2014by grace you are saved!\u2014and he raised us up together with him and seated us together with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, to demonstrate in the coming ages the surpassing wealth[14]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The next definition of \u03c4\u03af\u03b8\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9<\/a> is: \u201cto set (something), place (something).\u201d\u00a0 Jesus promised his disciples (John 14:16, 17 NET Table<\/a>):<\/p>\n

I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be<\/a> with you forever\u2014the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept because it does not see him or know him<\/a>.\u00a0 But<\/a> you know him because he resides (\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> with you and will be in you.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The next definition is: \u201cto lay (something) (e.g., to lay stones for a building or road, thus to construct, make).\u201d\u00a0 Paul continued his letter to believers in Ephesus (Ephesians 2:17-22 NET):<\/p>\n

And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace[15]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> to those who were near, so that through him we both have access in one Spirit (Romans 8:26, 27<\/a>)<\/em> to the Father. \u00a0So then you are no longer foreigners and noncitizens, but you are[16]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> fellow citizens with the saints and members of God\u2019s household, because you have been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. \u00a0In him the whole building,[17]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling place (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03b9\u03ba\u03b7\u03c4\u1f75\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>)<\/em> of God in the Spirit.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The next definition of \u03c4\u03af\u03b8\u03b7\u03bc<\/a> is: \u201cto pitch (a tent).\u201d\u00a0 Paul wrote believers in Corinth<\/a> (2 Corinthians 5:1-5 NET):<\/p>\n

For we know that if our earthly house, the tent we live in, is dismantled, we have a building from God, a house not built by human hands, that is eternal in the heavens. \u00a0For in this earthly house we groan, because we desire to put on our heavenly dwelling, if indeed,[18]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> after we have put on our heavenly house, we will not be found naked. \u00a0For we groan while we are in this tent, since we are weighed down, because[19]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> we do not want to be unclothed, but clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life (\u03b6\u03c9\u1fc6\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u03b6\u03c9\u03ae<\/a>)<\/em>. \u00a0Now the one who prepared us for this very purpose is God, who gave[20]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> us the Spirit as a down payment.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The next definition is: \u201cto establish, institute, decree, ordain, appoint (e.g., to appoint a law for the land).\u201d\u00a0 Jesus told his disciples (John 15:16, 17 NET):<\/p>\n

You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that remains, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you. \u00a0This I command you\u2014to love one another.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The next definition of \u03c4\u03af\u03b8\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9<\/a> is: \u201cto give a name to (something or someone).\u201d\u00a0 In his vision on Patmos<\/a> John scribed Jesus\u2019 letter To the angel of the church in Philadelphia<\/a><\/em>[21]<\/sup><\/a> (Revelation 3:11, 12 NET):<\/p>\n

I[22]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> am coming soon. \u00a0Hold on to what you have so that no one can take away your crown. \u00a0The one who conquers I will make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he will never depart from it. \u00a0I will write on him the name of my God and the name of the city of my God (the new Jerusalem that comes down[23]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> out of heaven from my God), and my new name as well.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Greek word translated conquers <\/em>was \u03bd\u03b9\u03ba\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a> (a form of \u03bd\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>).\u00a0 A loud voice in heaven<\/em> exclaimed in John\u2019s vision, describing how one conquers (Revelation 12:10, 11 NET):<\/p>\n

Then I heard a loud voice in heaven saying, \u201cThe salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the ruling authority of his Christ, have now come, because the accuser[24]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> of our brothers and sisters, the one who accuses them[25]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> day and night before our God, has been thrown down[26]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> (Luke 10:17-20<\/a>)<\/em>. \u00a0But they overcame (\u1f10\u03bd\u1f77\u03ba\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03bd\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives so much that they were afraid to die (Romans 6:1-23<\/a>)<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The next definition of \u03c4\u03af\u03b8\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9<\/a> is: \u201cto designate as, categorize as.\u201d\u00a0 Paul wrote believers in Rome<\/a> (Romans 8:1-4 NET):<\/p>\n

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.[27]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> \u00a0For the law of the life-giving Spirit (\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> \u03c0\u03bd\u03b5\u1f7b\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> \u03c4\u1fc6\u03c2<\/a> \u03b6\u03c9\u1fc6\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> in Christ Jesus has set you[28]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> free from the law of sin and death. \u00a0For God achieved what the law could not do because it was weakened through the flesh. \u00a0By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and concerning sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, so that the righteous requirement of the law may be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Apparently (NET note 1<\/a>) on two separate occasions in the past, scribes added the final phrases of verse 4\u2014\u03bc\u1f74<\/a> \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1f70<\/a> \u03c3\u1f71\u03c1\u03ba\u03b1<\/a> \u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03c0\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a> (who do not walk according to the flesh<\/em>) and \u1f00\u03bb\u03bb\u1f70<\/a> \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1f70 \u03c0\u03bd\u03b5\u1fe6\u03bc\u03b1<\/a> (but according to the Spirit<\/em>)\u2014as appositive phrases to \u1f10\u03bd<\/a> \u03a7\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u1ff7<\/a> \u1f38\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> (in Christ Jesus<\/em>) in verse 1.\u00a0 I don\u2019t doubt this is what Paul and the Holy Spirit meant by the phrase in Christ Jesus<\/em>.\u00a0 It only becomes problematic if one ignores the hard-won experience by which Paul confirmed that There is therefore now no condemnation<\/em>, and is led in the name of Christ away from the Holy Spirit<\/a> back to one\u2019s own efforts to obey the law in the flesh<\/a>.<\/p>\n

So here is another important designation or category (Romans 7:14-20 NET):<\/p>\n

For we know that the law is spiritual\u2014but I am unspiritual,[29]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> sold into slavery to sin. \u00a0For I don\u2019t understand what I am doing.\u00a0 For I do not do what I want\u2014instead, I do what I hate. \u00a0But if I do what I don\u2019t want, I agree that the law is good (\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u1f79\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em>. \u00a0But now it is no longer me doing it, but[30]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> sin that lives (\u03bf\u1f30\u03ba\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c3\u03b1<\/a>, a form of \u03bf\u1f30\u03ba\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> in me. \u00a0For I know that nothing good lives (\u03bf\u1f30\u03ba\u03b5\u1fd6<\/a>, another form of \u03bf\u1f30\u03ba\u03ad\u03c9)<\/em> in me, that is, in my flesh.\u00a0 For I want to do the good, but I cannot<\/a> do it. \u00a0For I do not do the good I want, but<\/a> I do the very evil I do not want! \u00a0Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer me doing it but<\/a> sin that lives (\u03bf\u1f30\u03ba\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c3\u03b1, a form of \u03bf\u1f30\u03ba\u03ad\u03c9)<\/em> in me [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The next definition of \u03c4\u03af\u03b8\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9<\/a> is: \u201cto appoint (someone) (e.g., to make him a prophet, put a king on a throne).\u201d\u00a0 Paul wrote to believers in Thessalonica<\/a> (1 Thessalonians 5:9-11 NET):<\/p>\n

For God did not destine us for wrath (Romans 1:18-32<\/a>)<\/em> but[31]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> for gaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. \u00a0He died for us so that whether we are alert or asleep, we will come to life (\u03b6\u1f75\u03c3\u03c9\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03b6\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>; KJV: <\/em>live)<\/em> together with him. \u00a0Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, just as you are in fact doing.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The next definition is: \u201cto direct (someone) to do (something).\u201d\u00a0 Jesus commanded his disciples (John 15:4, 5 NET):<\/p>\n

Remain in me, and I will remain in you.\u00a0 Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it remains[32]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> in the vine, so neither can you unless you remain[33]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> in me [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am the vine; you are the branches.\u00a0 The one who remains (John 15:9-17<\/a>)<\/em> in me\u2014and I in him\u2014bears much fruit (Galatians 5:16-26<\/a>)<\/em> because apart from me you can accomplish nothing.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The next definition of \u03c4\u03af\u03b8\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9<\/a> is: \u201cto entrust (something) to (someone).\u201d\u00a0 Paul wrote to Timothy<\/a> (2 Timothy 1:11-14):<\/p>\n

For this gospel I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher.[34]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> \u00a0Because of this, in fact, I suffer as I do. \u00a0But I am not ashamed because I know the one in whom my faith is set and I am convinced that he is able to protect what has been entrusted to me until that day. \u00a0Hold to the standard of sound words that you heard from me and do so with the faith and love (Galatians 5:22, 23<\/a>)<\/em> that are in Christ Jesus. \u00a0Protect that good thing (\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u1f74\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> entrusted to you,[35]<\/sup><\/a><\/em> through the Holy Spirit who lives (\u1f10\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03ba\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> within us.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The next definition is: \u201cto allow (something to happen).\u201d\u00a0 Jesus said (Matthew 5:15, 16 NET):<\/p>\n

People do not light a lamp and put it under a basket but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. \u00a0In the same way, let your light shine before people, so that they can see your good (\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u1f70<\/a>, another form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> deeds and give honor to your Father in heaven.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The next definition of \u03c4\u03af\u03b8\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9<\/a> is: \u201cto make a name for (someone).\u201d\u00a0 Paul expounded to believers in Philippi the result of Jesus\u2019 obedience to the point of death\u2014even death on a cross! <\/em>(Philippians 2:9-11 NET):<\/p>\n

As a result God highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow\u2014in heaven and on earth and under the earth\u2014and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The final definition is: \u201cto put (someone) in (a place) (e.g., to put him in jail).\u201d \u00a0Paul wrote to believers in Colossae<\/a> (Colossians 1:13, 14 NET):<\/p>\n

He [<\/em>God<\/a>, the Father<\/a>]<\/em> delivered us from the power of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption<\/a>, the forgiveness of sins [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So who are the sheep <\/em>for whom the good shepherd lays down <\/em>(KJV: giveth<\/em>) his <\/em>soul\/life?\u00a0 My sheep listen<\/em>[36]<\/sup><\/a> to my voice<\/em>, Jesus said (John 10:27-30 NET):<\/p>\n
