{"id":15572,"date":"2020-10-25T21:08:51","date_gmt":"2020-10-25T15:08:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/?p=15572"},"modified":"2025-12-29T09:50:12","modified_gmt":"2025-12-29T15:50:12","slug":"the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/religiousmind.net\/?p=15572","title":{"rendered":"The Lost Son of Perdition, Part 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/01\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-2\/#_ftn52\">Then<\/a> <\/em>[Jesus] <em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/01\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-2\/#_ftn53\">dipped<\/a> the piece of bread in the dish <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/01\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-2\/#_ftn54\">and<\/a> gave it to Judas <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/01\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-2\/#_ftn55\">Iscariot<\/a>, Simon\u2019s son <\/em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/01\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-2\/#_Table15\">Table<\/a>]. \u00a0<em>And after Judas took the piece of bread, Satan entered into him.\u00a0 Jesus said to him, \u201cWhat you are about to do, do quickly.\u201d<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/25\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-3\/#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jesus\u2019 instruction sounds so strange.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alexander_Maclaren\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexander MacLaren<\/a> wrote of his words, \u201cI hear in them, first, the voice of despairing love abandoning the conflict.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/25\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-3\/#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>If I have rightly construed the meaning of the incident, this is the plain meaning of it. And you will observe that the Revised Version, more accurately and closely rendering the words of our text, begins with a \u2018Therefore.\u2019 \u2018Therefore said Jesus unto him,\u2019 because the die was cast; because the will of Judas had conclusively welcomed Satan, and conclusively rejected Christ; therefore, knowing that remonstrance was vain, knowing that the deed was, in effect, done, Jesus Christ, that Incarnate Charity which \u2018believeth all things, and hopeth all things,\u2019 abandoned the man to himself, and said, \u2018There, then, if thou wilt thou must. I have done all I can; my last arrow is shot, and it has missed the target. That then doest, do quickly.\u2019<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I, too, want more emotional conflict in this scene.\u00a0 But John\u2019s Gospel narrative continued (John 13:28, 29 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Now none of those present at the table understood why Jesus said this to Judas. \u00a0Some thought that because Judas had the money box, Jesus was telling him to buy whatever they needed for the feast, or to give something to the poor.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Nothing of the high drama Mr. MacLaren and I crave was evident to others present at the time.\u00a0 In fact, John, who was privy (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/John+13:23\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John 13:23-26<\/a>) to this exchange, didn\u2019t write any drama into the scene, certainly not that Jesus had lost a contest of wills to Judas Iscariot or Satan and was abandoning the field.\u00a0 On the contrary, the Greek word translated <em>do <\/em>in the phrase <em>do quickly<\/em> was <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/poi.html#poihson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c0\u03bf\u1f77\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/verbs1.htm#MOOD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">imperative<\/a> form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/poi.html#poiew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>.\u00a0 In John\u2019s Gospel narrative Jesus commanded Judas Iscariot, <em>What you are about to do, do quickly<\/em>, and Judas (and Satan apparently) obeyed Him (John 13:30a NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Judas took the piece of bread and went out immediately.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/25\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-3\/#_ftn3\"><em><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/em><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Did Jesus just absolve Judas Iscariot of his betrayal?\u00a0 Mr. MacLaren\u2019s description of Jesus as the \u201cIncarnate Charity\u201d caught my ear.\u00a0 Should he have paid more heed to the fact that <em>Charity never <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/07\/31\/a-door-of-hope-part-1\/#_ftn24\">faileth<\/a><\/em> (NET: <em>ends<\/em>)?<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/25\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-3\/#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>David\u2019s son Absalom hated his half brother Amnon ever since Amnon had raped Absalom\u2019s sister (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/2+Samuel+13:1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2 Samuel 13:1-22<\/a>).\u00a0 <em><a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/2+Samuel+13:23\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Two years later<\/a><\/em>\u2026<em>Absalom instructed his servants, \u201cLook! \u00a0When Amnon is drunk and I say to you, \u2018Strike Amnon down,\u2019 kill him then and there.\u00a0 Don\u2019t fear! \u00a0Is it not I who have given you these instructions?\u00a0 Be strong and courageous!\u201d \u00a0So Absalom\u2019s servants did to Amnon exactly what Absalom had instructed<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/25\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-3\/#_ftn5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It is taken for granted here that Absalom killed Amnon rather than the unnamed servants who carried out his command.<\/p>\n<p>When David got the clever idea to kill Uriah the Hittite by commanding Joab to station him <em>at the front in the thick of the battle and then withdraw from him so he will be cut down and killed<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/25\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-3\/#_ftn6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lang\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?t=kjv&amp;strongs=h3068\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4<\/a> (<em>Yehovah<\/em>) <em>sent Nathan <\/em>the Prophet <em>to David<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/2+Samuel+12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2 Samuel 12:1a<\/a>), not to Joab who had carried out the command.\u00a0 Nathan said to David (2 Samuel 12:9 NET [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/26\/jedidiah-part-1\/#_Table27\">Table<\/a>]):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Why have you shown contempt for the Lord\u2019s <em>(<\/em>Yehovah<em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4)<\/em> decrees by doing evil in my sight?\u00a0 You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and you have taken his wife to be your own wife!\u00a0 You have killed him with the sword of the Ammonites.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Jesus was intent on <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/01\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-2\/#_fulfill\">fulfilling<\/a> the Scriptures.\u00a0 It shouldn\u2019t surprise me that He would take ultimate responsibility for Judas\u2019 betrayal.\u00a0 I think the tendency to judge Judas <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/1+Corinthians+4:5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">before the time<\/a>, to condemn him prematurely to an eternity in the lake of fire, makes it more difficult to see or believe Jesus\u2019 intervention here.<\/p>\n<p>So I\u2019ll begin the longer task of studying the Greek words, starting with <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apw.html#apwleto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f00\u03c0\u1f7d\u03bb\u03b5\u03c4\u03bf<\/a> (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apoll.html#apollumi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03bb\u03bb\u03c5\u03bc\u03b9, \u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03bb\u03bb\u03c9, \u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03bb\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>), translated <em>lost <\/em>in Jesus\u2019 prayer:\u00a0 <em>Not one of them was lost except the one destined for destruction, so that the scripture could be fulfilled<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/25\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-3\/#_ftn7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The first two occurrences of \u1f00\u03c0\u1f7d\u03bb\u03b5\u03c4\u03bf in the Septuagint are found in the book of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Book_of_Job\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Job<\/a>.\u00a0 I had planned to skip them because this book is tricky.\u00a0 For the most part the advice Eliphaz, Bildad and Zophar gave Job seemed alright to my religious mind.\u00a0 others.\u00a0 To say them out loud to Job\u2019s face is less typical but not unheard of.\u00a0 Though the first half of Job 4:12 is missing from the Masoretic text, the Septuagint puts a fine point on the thrust of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eliphaz_(Job)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eliphaz\u2019s<\/a> discourse: <em>But if there had been any truth in thy words, none of these evils would have befallen thee<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/25\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-3\/#_ftn8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The reader of the book of Job knows, however, that all of these evils fell upon Job precisely because he <em>was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/25\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-3\/#_ftn9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Job was not dead.\u00a0 He was not burning in a lake of fire for all eternity.\u00a0 He had lost his family, his servants, his possessions, his health and his desire to live.\u00a0 The Hebrew word translated <em>perished <\/em>was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lang\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?t=kjv&amp;strongs=h6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u05d0\u05b8\u05d1\u05b8\u0591\u05d3<\/a> (<em>\u02bc\u00e2bad<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>The definition from Strong\u2019s Concordance reads: \u201cto wander away, i.e. lose oneself; by implication to perish (causative, destroy).\u201d\u00a0 The Gesenius&#8217; Hebrew-Chaldee Lexicon reads: \u201cto be lost, to lose oneself, to wander\u2026especially used of a lost and wandering sheep\u2026\u201d\u00a0 This helps considerably.<\/p>\n<p>This word describes the one who wanders away from God, not away from the flock necessarily.\u00a0 A herd mentality is portrayed as a negative example in Scripture.\u00a0 The Bible is a collection of stories about clans and entire nations that wandered away from God interspersed with stories of individuals who pursued Him and followed where He led.\u00a0 The first occurrence of
