{"id":15624,"date":"2020-10-31T21:09:56","date_gmt":"2020-10-31T15:09:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/?p=15624"},"modified":"2025-12-29T10:08:37","modified_gmt":"2025-12-29T16:08:37","slug":"the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/religiousmind.net\/?p=15624","title":{"rendered":"The Lost Son of Perdition, Part 4"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>For the scripture says to Pharaoh<\/em>, Paul quoted (<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/31\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-4\/#_Tablea\">Table<\/a> below), <em>\u201cFor this very purpose I have raised you up, that I may demonstrate my power in you, and that my name may be proclaimed in all the earth.\u201d<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/31\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-4\/#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0It occurred to me in the previous <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/25\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-3\/\">essay<\/a> how much the larger section in which this quotation is found influences my thinking on the lost son of perdition.\u00a0 I want to begin to consider that here.<\/p>\n<p>This section of Paul\u2019s letter is ostensibly about Israel: <em>For not all those who are descended from Israel are truly Israel, nor are all the children Abraham\u2019s true descendants; rather \u201cthrough Isaac will your descendants be counted.\u201d<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/31\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-4\/#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 John the Baptist had warned, <em>don\u2019t think you can say to yourselves, \u2018We have Abraham as our father.\u2019\u00a0 For I tell you that God can raise up children for Abraham from these stones!<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/31\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-4\/#_ftn3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Gospel implications of this section are still evident, however, through this relatively transparent surface: <em>it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God; rather, the children of promise are counted as descendants<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/31\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-4\/#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>For all who are led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/31\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-4\/#_ftn5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a> Paul had written previously.\u00a0 <em>Now this is what I am saying, brothers and sisters<\/em>, he had written <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/1+Corinthians+15:50\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">elsewhere<\/a>, <em>Flesh and blood <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/09\/13\/atonement-part-6\/#_ftn34\">cannot<\/a> inherit the kingdom of God<\/em>\u2026<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/31\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-4\/#_ftn6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In this section Paul, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Romans+11:13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">apostle to the Gentiles<\/a><\/em>, worked through a deep emotional problem over what he saw with his own eyes:<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/31\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-4\/#_ftn7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a> <em>For I could <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/04\/saul-and-barnabas-part-3\/#_ftn12\">wish<\/a><\/em> <em>that I myself were accursed\u2014cut off from Christ\u2014for the sake of my people, my fellow countrymen<\/em> [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/04\/saul-and-barnabas-part-3\/#_Table13\">Table<\/a>], <em>who are Israelites. To them belong the adoption as sons, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the temple worship, and the promises. \u00a0To them belong the patriarchs, and from them, by human descent, came the Christ, who is God over all, blessed forever!\u00a0 Amen<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/31\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-4\/#_ftn8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And he worked through the more urgent theological issue his limited perspective had engendered: <em>It is not as though the word of God had failed<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/31\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-4\/#_ftn9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The Holy Spirit\u2019s solution to this issue was immediate and direct: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Romans+9:11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">God\u2019s purpose in election<\/a><\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kat.html#kat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1fbf<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ekl.html#ekloghn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f10\u03ba\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u1f74\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/proq.html#proqesis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c0\u03c1\u1f79\u03b8\u03b5\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/to.html#tou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/qe.html#qeou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b8\u03b5\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>).\u00a0 God has his own reasons why (and <em>when <\/em>from our limited perspectives) He does what He does.<\/p>\n<p><em>God\u2019s purpose in election <\/em>engendered its own issue which Paul addressed next.\u00a0 And here is where his quotation (<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/31\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-4\/#_Tablea\">Table<\/a> below) from Exodus is found (Romans 9:14-18 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>What shall we say then? \u00a0Is there injustice with God? \u00a0Absolutely not! \u00a0For he says to <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/22\/religious-and-righteous-prayer\/#sdfootnote12sym\">Moses<\/a>: \u201c<strong><em>I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.<\/em><\/strong>\u201d \u00a0So then, it does not depend on human desire or exertion, but on God who <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/22\/religious-and-righteous-prayer\/#sdfootnote13sym\">shows mercy<\/a> <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/22\/religious-and-righteous-prayer\/#_Table4\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0For the scripture says to Pharaoh: \u201c<strong><em>For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I may demonstrate my power in you, and that my name may be proclaimed in all the earth.<\/em><\/strong>\u201d \u00a0So then, God has mercy on whom he chooses to have mercy, and he hardens whom he chooses to harden.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Certainly, Paul addressed his concerns for Israel here.\u00a0 He made that explicit later: <em>A partial hardening has happened to Israel <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/10\/14\/atonement-part-9\/#_ftn16\">until<\/a> the full number of the Gentiles has come in<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/31\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-4\/#_ftn10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0But the very nature of his concern for Israel allows the Gospel implications to show through.\u00a0 Now, I am so grateful that receiving the Gospel of the grace of God in Jesus Christ doesn\u2019t depend on the uncertainty of human desire or exertion, but that wasn\u2019t always true for me.<\/p>\n<p>There was a <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/03\/is-sin-less-than-sin-part-4\/#_alone\">time<\/a> when I feared the idea that I should flee my \u201csure and certain\u201d desire and exertion to have a righteousness of my own derived from the law, all the commands of the New Testament and Church doctrine for something as whimsical as the mercy of God and <em>a righteousness from God that is in fact based on Christ\u2019s faithfulness<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/31\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-4\/#_ftn11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Obviously, I didn\u2019t understand it that clearly at the time.\u00a0 As I began to understand it I began to repent of my unbelief.\u00a0 Jeremiah wrote:<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\" width=\"319\">\n<p style=\"text-align: His compassions fail not.<\/td>\n<td width=\"160\">The Lord\u2019s loyal kindness (<em>checed<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lang\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?t=kjv&amp;strongs=h2617\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u05d7\u05e1\u05d3\u05d9<\/a>) never ceases; his compassions never end.<\/td>\n<td width=\"160\">The mercies of the Lord are that we have not expired, that his compassion has not come to an end.<\/td>\n<td width=\"160\">[It is] the mercies (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ele.html#eleh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f10\u03bb\u1f73\u03b7<\/a>) of the Lord, that he has not failed me, because his compassions are not exhausted. \u00a0Pity [us], O Lord, early [every] month: for we are not brought to an end, because his compassions are not exhausted.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"160\">They are new every morning; great is Thy faithfulness.<\/td>\n<td width=\"160\">They are fresh every morning; salvation of HaShem.<\/td>\n<td width=\"160\">It is good to wait patiently for deliverance from the Lord.<\/td>\n<td width=\"160\">A good thing it is\u2014and it will wait and be quiet for the salvation of the Lord.<\/td>\n<td width=\"160\">[is] good, and shall wait for, and quietly expect salvation of the Lord.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><a id=\"_mercy\"><\/a>And in answer to his deep emotional problem, Paul wrote: <em>For God has consigned all people to disobedience so that he may show mercy to them all<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/31\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-4\/#_ftn12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_all\"><\/a>It is reasonable to assume here that the Greek words <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/to.html#tous\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c4\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pan.html#pantas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> (a plural form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pas.html#pas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c0\u1fb6\u03c2<\/a>) translated <em>all people <\/em>are equivalent to the Greek words \u03c4\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2 \u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2 translated <em>them all<\/em>.\u00a0 It is not reasonable to assume that <em>he may show mercy to <\/em>means \u201che might show mercy to.\u201d\u00a0 Yes, <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ele.html#elehsh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f10\u03bb\u03b5\u1f75\u03c3\u1fc3<\/a> is a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ele.html#eleew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f10\u03bb\u03b5\u03ad\u03c9<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/verbs1.htm#MOOD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">subjunctive mood<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The subjunctive mood indicates probability or objective possibility. \u00a0The action of the verb will possibly happen, depending on certain objective factors or circumstances\u2026However if the subjunctive mood is used in a purpose or result clause, then the action should not be thought of as a possible result, but should be viewed as a definite outcome that will happen as a result of another stated action.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/31\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-4\/#_ftn13\"><sup>[13]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The clause <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/in.html#ina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f35\u03bd\u03b1<\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2 \u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2 \u1f10\u03bb\u03b5\u1f75\u03c3\u1fc3 (<em>so that he may show mercy to them all<\/em>) is clearly the result of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sunek.html#sunekleise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u1f73\u03ba\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ga.html#gar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b3\u1f70\u03c1<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/o.html#o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f41<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/qe.html#qeos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b8\u03b5\u1f78\u03c2<\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2 \u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2 <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/eis.html#eis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b5\u1f30\u03c2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apei.html#apeiqein\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03b5\u1f77\u03b8\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1\u03bd<\/a> (<em>For God has consigned all people to disobedience<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>It would have been misleading to have translated \u1f10\u03bb\u03b5\u1f75\u03c3\u1fc3 <em>he <\/em>will<em> show mercy to<\/em>.\u00a0 It is not in the future tense but the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/verbs1.htm#TENSE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">aorist<\/a>.\u00a0 What is telling to me is that <a href=\"https:\/\/biblehub.com\/romans\/11-32.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">no one<\/a> has translated it as \u201csimple past tense,\u201d <em>he <\/em>showed<em> mercy to<\/em>.\u00a0 Paul was not referencing Jesus\u2019 crucifixion directly here.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Gill_(theologian)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Gill<\/a> seemed to have a firm grasp on Paul\u2019s intent, coupled even with the earlier conclusion <em>it does not depend on human desire or exertion, but on God who shows mercy<\/em>, regarding those:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>for whom [God] has mercy in store, and will bestow it on them; and in order to bring them to a sense of their need of it, and that he may the more illustriously display the riches of it, he leaves them for a while in a state of unbelief, and then by his Spirit thoroughly convinces them of it, and gives them faith to look to, and believe in, the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ, unto eternal life.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/31\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-4\/#_ftn14\"><sup>[14]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>God\u2019s mercy, according to Mr. Gill however, was \u201cnot upon all the individuals of Jews and Gentiles,\u201d but only \u201cGod&#8217;s elect among the Jews\u201d and \u201cGod&#8217;s elect among the Gentiles\u201d \u201cfor all are not concluded in, or convinced of the sin of unbelief, but only such who are eventually believers.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/31\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-4\/#_ftn15\"><sup>[15]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 In other words, he understood \u03c4\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2 \u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2 as God\u2019s elect Jews and Gentiles: <em>For God has consigned<\/em> his elect <em>to disobedience so that he may show mercy to <\/em>his elect, e.g., so that his elect and only his elect will better recognize \u201cthe riches\u201d of his mercy, some Jews and some Gentiles.<\/p>\n<p><em>Some<\/em> Jews believed Jesus already?<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/31\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-4\/#_ftn16\"><sup>[16]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 How could the realization that <em>some<\/em> Jews would be shown mercy wean Paul from his <em>wish that<\/em> he <em>were accursed\u2014cut off from Christ\u2014for the sake of <\/em>his <em>people,<\/em> his <em>fellow countrymen who are Israelites<\/em>?\u00a0 Would Mr. Gill\u2019s knowledge inspire Paul to eulogize (Romans 11:33-36 NET)?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God!\u00a0 How unsearchable are his judgments and how unfathomable his ways! \u00a0For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor? \u00a0Or who has first given to God that God needs to repay him? \u00a0For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever!\u00a0 Amen.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I could be wrong.\u00a0 Perhaps Paul wasn\u2019t weaned from his desperate, aberrant to the point of sinful, concern for those God didn\u2019t care enough to consign to disobedience, much less to show them any mercy.\u00a0 But it seems much less tortured to take \u03c4\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2 \u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2 (literally: <em>the all<\/em>, plural, or in a common American Southern dialect: <em>all y\u2019all<\/em>) at face value.\u00a0 What other Greek words could Paul or the Holy Spirit have chosen to actually mean <em>all<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>I <a href=\"https:\/\/biblehub.com\/greek\/pantas_3956.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">found<\/a> no other usage of \u03c4\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2 \u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2 in the New Testament.\u00a0 Matthew, Mark, Luke, Paul, the writer of Hebrews and Jude used \u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2 \u03c4\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2 <em>x href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/31\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-4\/#_ftn17\"><sup>[17]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>so these are said to be &#8220;fitted for destruction&#8221;, that is, eternal damnation; not by God, for this does not respect God&#8217;s act of ordination to punishment; but by Satan, the god of this world, that blinds them, who works effectually in them, and leads them captive at his will; and by themselves, by their own wickedness, hardness of heart, and impenitence, do they treasure up to themselves wrath, against the day of wrath, so that their destruction is of themselves:<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Paul didn\u2019t write about \u201ceternal damnation\u201d here but the temporal effects of <em>God <\/em>having <em>mercy on whom he chooses to have mercy, and <\/em>(more directly to the point) hardening <em>whom he chooses to harden<\/em>, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Romans+11:5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">at the present time<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 His primary concern was God\u2019s hardening (<a Paul\u2019s contemporaries <em>lost <\/em>was the opportunity to begin to live the life they will lead for all eternity in their then present, to be freed from their sinfulness, their anger and hatred and live a new life through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ, who prayed (John 17:3 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Now this is eternal life\u2014that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you sent.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He became a human being so that they could have known Him and the only true God though Him.\u00a0 They could have experienced his love, his joy, his peace, his patience his kindness, his goodness, his faithfulness, his gentleness and his self-control<a salvation they had rejected would help them somehow establish their own. \u00a0All who remained in Jerusalem suffered horrifically under their <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/08\/19\/father-forgive-them-part-1\/#_zealots\">leadership<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Paul, however, found comfort in the Holy Spirit, not in
